Decentralized derivatives exchange Hyperliquid has consistently outperformed traditional finance giants in terms of volume and net income.

DefiLlama data estimates Hyperliquid’s annualized net income at $1.24 billion as of Sept. 12, exceeding Nasdaq’s $1.12 billion net income for the entirety of 2024 by 11%.

The comparison positions the DeFi platform ahead of one of the world’s largest stock exchanges in net income, despite operating with just 11 team members.

Additionally, data from ASXN shows Nasdaq employed 9,162 people in 2024, producing a net income per employee ratio of $123,335.52.

Hyperliquid’s 11-person team generates approximately $113 million per employee, establishing the highest net income-to-employee ratio in global financial markets.

Volumes surpass Robinhood

The trading protocol posted $420.3 billion in total trading volume during August, extending its winning streak against Robinhood to four consecutive months.

Robinhood published August trading figures on Sept. 11, revealing $227.5 billion in total volume across all products.

The breakdown included $199.2 billion from equity trading, $195.5 million from options contracts, $13.7 billion from crypto trading in the Robinhood App, and $14.4 billion from crypto trading on the Bitstamp exchange.

Hyperliquid processed $398 billion in perpetual contracts and $22.3 billion in spot trading during the same period, creating a $170.5 billion volume advantage over the retail trading platform. The August performance marks the platform’s strongest monthly showing since beginning its winning streak against Robinhood.

The volume comparison traces back to May, when Hyperliquid first overtook Robinhood with $256 billion versus $192 billion, according to data shared by Jon Ma from Artemis.

June volumes reached $231 billion for Hyperliquid compared to Robinhood’s $193 billion, followed by July’s $330.8 billion versus $237.8 billion performance. Its July advantage represented its largest monthly gap at 39.1% before August’s results widened the margin further to nearly 85%.

Amid these results, Hyperliquid’s HYPE token registered a new all-time high of $57.30 on Sept. 12, up roughly 760% from its launch price of $6.51 on Nov. 28, 2024.

The platform continues to demonstrate how decentralized exchanges can compete directly with established retail trading platforms while maintaining lean operational structures that generate outsized returns per employee.

Robinhood’s Low-Cost Crypto Claim Under Florida Investigation https://earlybirdsinvest.com/robinhoods-low-cost-crypto-claim-under-florida-investigation/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/robinhoods-low-cost-crypto-claim-under-florida-investigation/#respond Fri, 11 Jul 2025 12:44:55 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/robinhoods-low-cost-crypto-claim-under-florida-investigation/

The crypto exchange Robinhood is under investigation in Florida over the company’s claims about offering the lowest prices for buying digital currencies.

The state’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, stated in a July 9 press release, “Robinhood has long claimed to be the best bargain, but we believe those representations were deceptive”.

Robinhood has built its crypto business around a model where it earns money by routing trades to outside firms. Those firms pay Robinhood for the trades, a system called payment for order flow.

While this allows the platform to advertise no direct commission, state officials noted that it may lead to customers paying more through trade prices that are worse than on other platforms.

Florida officials said Robinhood’s promises to deliver “the most crypto for your money” and “lowest cost on average” may not reflect what users actually experience.

The Attorney General’s office issued a subpoena demanding that Robinhood turn over various records by July 31. That includes internal charts, advertisements, employee training materials, details of all crypto trades made by Florida customers in 2024, and documents explaining how rebates and costs are calculated.

Officials also asked for information on how employees explain costs to users and whether any outside parties had access to customer trading data.

On July 7, European regulators launched an investigation into Robinhood’s stock token products after OpenAI stated that the tokens do not provide real ownership in the company. What did they say? Read the full story.

EU regulators probing Robinhood’s tokenized equity plans after OpenAI raises concerns https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eu-regulators-probing-robinhoods-tokenized-equity-plans-after-openai-raises-concerns/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eu-regulators-probing-robinhoods-tokenized-equity-plans-after-openai-raises-concerns/#respond Tue, 08 Jul 2025 06:07:53 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/eu-regulators-probing-robinhoods-tokenized-equity-plans-after-openai-raises-concerns/

Robinhood’s private equity tokens, offering exposure to tech stocks like SpaceX and OpenAI, have triggered regulatory scrutiny in Europe after OpenAI raised concerns and said that the digital assets do not represent equity ownership in the company, CNBC reported on July 7.

The Bank of Lithuania, which serves as Robinhood’s primary regulator in the European Union, confirmed it is seeking detailed clarifications before assessing the products’ legality.

A spokesperson for the central bank told CNBC:

“Only after receiving and evaluating this information will we be able to assess the legality and compliance of these specific instruments.”

The controversy centers on Robinhood’s recent announcement of an expansion into tokenized securities, including plans to issue over 200 tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs for European investors.

The brokerage announced plans to launch its private equity tokens and a new layer-2 blockchain on June 30, positioning itself as a major player in the rapidly growing tokenization sector.

However, OpenAI has distanced itself from the tokens, warning investors that Robinhood’s so-called OpenAI tokens do not provide any equity stake or direct ownership rights in the company.

The scrutiny comes as financial institutions ramp up efforts to capture a slice of the tokenization market, which is valued at over $24 billion as of June 30.

Although tokenized private credit and U.S. Treasury debt currently dominate the sector, accounting for the majority of value, tokenized equities remain a small but potentially fast-growing segment, with just $188 million in current market share.

Major players such as BlackRock and Franklin Templeton have also entered the tokenization space, issuing tokenized money market funds and exploring blockchain-based settlements to improve efficiency and transparency.

However, despite the optimism, legal and regulatory uncertainties remain significant. Regulators and lawyers continue to debate whether tokenized equity instruments require full securities registration or if derivative-like structures are sufficient to meet compliance standards in Europe and the U.S.

For Robinhood, the regulatory probe in Lithuania could set an important precedent as the brokerage seeks to roll out its tokenization framework globally.

Its recent presentation at the EthCC conference in Brussels outlined plans to tokenize a wide range of financial instruments, but the backlash highlights the fine line between innovation and investor protection in the fast-evolving digital asset market.

Crypto makes up 43% of Robinhood’s transaction revenue as retail traders come back https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-makes-up-43-of-robinhoods-transaction-revenue-as-retail-traders-come-back/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-makes-up-43-of-robinhoods-transaction-revenue-as-retail-traders-come-back/#respond Thu, 01 May 2025 09:48:43 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/crypto-makes-up-43-of-robinhoods-transaction-revenue-as-retail-traders-come-back/

Robinhood’s first-quarter results marked a revival in retail crypto trading, with the platform’s crypto revenue doubling year-over-year to $252 million.

This surge contributed to a 77% increase in transaction-based revenue, underlining the growing role of individual traders in the market’s latest chapter. Retail-driven activity powered Robinhood to its strongest quarter as mainstream investors reengaged amid volatility.

However, global interest in Bitcoin may not mimic data seen in Robinhood’s data. Searches for Bitcoin on Google Trends are near five-year lows, with the top countries being El Salvador, Nigeria, and the Netherlands. The United States is way down the list at number 28, just behind the UK.

Still, internal data and third-party liquidity metrics reflected broadening trading appetites. Bitcoin retained its dominance, capturing around 41% of crypto trading volume.

However, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Solana, and XRP completed the top five, indicating that traders ventured beyond Bitcoin in search of returns. Notably, Dogecoin volumes spiked in March, signaling renewed speculative interest.

Monthly figures revealed the pace of activity. January crypto volumes hit $20.4 billion, representing a 57% increase year-over-year despite a month-on-month dip.

February volumes cooled to $14.4 billion, yet this still reflected a 122% jump from the previous year. Together, these levels demonstrated durable retail interest despite moderating price momentum following Bitcoin’s earlier all-time high.

Robinhood vs Coinbase

Robinhood’s success contrasted sharply with Coinbase’s muted performance. Per Oppenheimer, Coinbase’s projected Q1 volumes were revised downward to $380 billion, representing a 13% quarter-over-quarter decline.

This divergence framed Robinhood as a key beneficiary of retail-led volatility trading, while Coinbase’s heavier institutional and fee-sensitive user base faced softer conditions. Despite Coinbase maintaining a 69% share of U.S. spot flows, its retail pullback highlighted shifting market forces.

Beyond volumes, Robinhood’s broader metrics reflected platform growth. Net income rose to $336 million, or 37 cents per share, from $157 million a year earlier.

Gold subscriptions hit a record 3.2 million, while assets under custody climbed 70% to $221 billion. Still, crypto represented 43% of transaction revenue, illustrating its central role in Robinhood’s earnings profile.

Market makers appeared cautious elsewhere. Kaiko reported that liquidity for tokens like RNDR, SHIB, and PEPE fell more than 50% as participants de-risked. Memecoin indicators were mixed.

While Dogecoin trading increased on Robinhood, both DOGE and SHIB saw declines in on-chain active addresses and transfer counts. SHIB’s exchange supply also reached a six-month high, suggesting subdued broader demand.

CEO Vladimir Tenev acknowledged the cyclical nature of crypto markets, noting Robinhood’s aim to diversify through expanded wealth products. He told Reuters,

“Customers are not only trading more with us, but they’re entrusting us with more of their assets.”

The company’s upcoming wealth-management suite is positioned to integrate crypto into retirement and advisory offerings, potentially embedding digital assets more deeply in everyday financial portfolios.

Robinhood’s performance illuminated evolving retail engagement. Institutional flows through spot ETFs have dominated headlines, yet Q1 revealed that grassroots traders continue to impact market activity. Whether this momentum persists as tariff concerns and macro volatility shift remains uncertain. For now, Robinhood’s results capture a retail resurgence that sets it apart from peers.

Robinhood’s Crypto Unit Cleared as US SEC Wraps Up Investigation Without Action https://earlybirdsinvest.com/robinhoods-crypto-unit-cleared-as-us-sec-wraps-up-investigation-without-action/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/robinhoods-crypto-unit-cleared-as-us-sec-wraps-up-investigation-without-action/#respond Wed, 26 Feb 2025 03:19:47 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/robinhoods-crypto-unit-cleared-as-us-sec-wraps-up-investigation-without-action/

The cryptocurrency unit of the American financial services company Robinhood is now in the clear as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has closed its investigation into the business.

According to a blog post by Robinhood, the SEC revealed in a letter dated February 21 that it had wrapped up its investigation into the firm’s crypto operations and did not intend to bring any enforcement action against the company.

SEC Closes Investigation Against Robinhood

Recall that the SEC hit Robinhood with a Wells Notice in May 2024, indicating a threat of legal action over the firm’s alleged securities violations.

CryptoPotato reported that Robinhood had allegedly violated Sections 15(a) and 17A of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, which prohibited the company from inducing the sale of securities unless registered with the SEC and defrauding customers of their money through material omissions or misstatements.

Possible remedies for the charges, if filed, included disgorgement, civil money penalties, a cease-and-desist order, and limitations on activities. The Wells Notice came 15 months after the SEC sent an investigative subpoena to Robinhood regarding its crypto operations.

While responding to the agency’s actions last year, Robinhood said it was disappointed because it had made attempts to register its business and comply with the agency’s regulations. Regardless, the company insisted that the SEC’s case was weak because the assets on its platform were not securities.

In the recent blog post announcing the Commission’s latest decision, Robinhood maintained that it had made difficult choices to delist certain assets classified as securities under the former SEC chair Gary Gensler, even though it disagreed with the argument that most crypto transactions were subject to federal securities laws.

Robinhood Maintains Innocence

Nevertheless, the company acknowledged the transition from a period of regulation by enforcement to a time of “regulation by regulation.” Crypto market participants will be provided with a clear regulatory framework, as promised by President Donald Trump during his election campaign.

“We applaud the staff’s decision to close this investigation with no action. Let me be crystal clear—this investigation never should have been opened. Robinhood Crypto always has and will always respect federal securities laws and never allowed transactions in securities,” Robinhood’s chief legal officer Dan Gallagher said, adding “As we explained to the SEC, any case against Robinhood Crypto would have failed.”

Meanwhile, Robinhood is not the only crypto company getting pardoned by the SEC. The securities agency has paused its lawsuit against the crypto exchange Binance and intends to withdraw a similar case against the trading platform Coinbase.
