A violent attack in central Paris has left a man without a hard drive containing €2 million worth of Bitcoin.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday evening, August 5, is the latest in a growing pattern of crypto-related crimes in France.

Details Of The Attack

According to local media reports, the incident began at around 7:15 p.m. at the Peninsula Hotel, a luxury establishment located on Avenue Kléber in Paris’s 16th arrondissement. Hotel staff alerted the police after witnessing five unknown men approach one of their guests and demand, “Give us 400,000 euros, and it’s over.” The victim was then forcibly taken from the hotel to an area near the Arc de Triomphe, where he was physically assaulted.

Officers from the anti-crime brigade quickly responded and arrested all five suspects in the 8th arrondissement. Initial investigations revealed that the group may be connected to a nearby nightclub, where the victim allegedly owed €40,000. Police believes the suspects were attempting to collect that debt by force.

The victim was briefly interviewed by authorities and said he had been beaten and threatened. He reported that the attackers took his iPhone 13 Pro Max and a hard drive containing Bitcoin worth around €2 million. He added that a previous incident had occurred the week before, during which the same individuals had displayed a weapon.

The suspects were taken into custody at the First District Police headquarters for extortion. During the night, investigators from the Anti-Banditism Brigade took over the case. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that five people were in custody and that investigations and hearings are ongoing.

This isn’t the first time Paris has made the headlines for crypto-related crime. The country has endured a series of violent kidnappings targeting individuals in the industry. The most recent case happened in May and involved a failed attempt by a masked gang to abduct relatives of the co-founder of French Bitcoin exchange Paynium. Twenty five suspects were later indicted for the failed abduction.

Another incident saw the father of a crypto millionaire being hijacked while walking their dog. David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, and his wife were also taken from their home in France in January, with French special forces rescuing the couple after a 58-hour ordeal. The operation led to multiple arrests, including individuals with prior crypto-related convictions. Both cases involved a ransom demand, with the victims being released with missing fingers.

US Tourist Drugged and Robbed in London: $123K in XRP, BTC Vanishes https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-tourist-drugged-and-robbed-in-london-123k-in-xrp-btc-vanishes/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-tourist-drugged-and-robbed-in-london-123k-in-xrp-btc-vanishes/#respond Sun, 25 May 2025 01:05:04 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-tourist-drugged-and-robbed-in-london-123k-in-xrp-btc-vanishes/

A US software developer’s brief London layover turned into a nightmare after a suspected abduction and crypto theft left him physically injured and financially gutted.

Jacob Irwin-Cline, 30, says he was drugged by a fake Uber driver in the early hours of May 9, who allegedly used coercive tactics and a spiked cigarette to steal access to Irwin-Cline’s crypto holdings. In the process, the victim was drained of a staggering $123,000 from his digital wallets.

Drugged, Injured, and Robbed

According to a report by MyLondon, the Portland native had stepped out for drinks at The Roxy nightclub in Soho and planned to return to his Bayswater hostel shortly after 1:30 AM. But after calling a legitimate Uber through the app, a man resembling the driver’s profile pulled up in a different vehicle, a dark sedan rather than the listed Toyota Prius.

Lured by familiarity, Irwin-Cline accepted a cigarette from the driver, which he believes was laced with scopolamine, a drug known to render victims pliable and amnesic.

What followed was a blur: Irwin-Cline recalled that he intermittently lost consciousness, during which he said to had handed over passcodes, and vaguely navigated through his apps before being ejected from the vehicle. He also said that the driver struck him during the abrupt escape.

The attacker reportedly exploited Irwin-Cline’s Revolut app to access multiple crypto wallets and extracted roughly $72,000 in XRP, $50,000 in Bitcoin, and smaller altcoin amounts. The victim’s phone and laptop were both compromised – his laptop was remotely wiped, and his phone was stolen.

Despite a desperate scramble to recover his accounts, aided by a flatmate back in the US, the digital assets were gone within hours. He said he was left barely able to walk and emotionally devastated.

While he does not believe he was deliberately targeted, the attack mirrors rising cases across Europe involving so-called “wrench attacks,” where physical coercion is used to force crypto access. The Metropolitan Police and FBI cybercrime team are now investigating, but Irwin-Cline fears the odds of recovery are slim.

Physical Attacks Escalate

As the industry gains wider acceptance and popularity, there has been a worrying increase in physical assaults targeting individuals holding Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Earlier this month, a failed kidnapping attempt in Paris targeted the daughter and grandson of a prominent crypto executive. Masked attackers ambushed the family during a school drop-off but fled after the couple resisted, with one attacker’s gun later revealed to be a replica. The incident, caught on camera, adds to a string of violent crypto-related crimes in France. Victims were confirmed to be relatives of Paymium CEO Pierre Noizat.

Previous attacks include a kidnapped crypto millionaire’s father and a ransom assault on Ledger’s co-founder, both involving mutilation.

Investor Kidnapped, Driven to Remote Desert and Robbed of $4,000,000 in Cryptocurrency by Teenagers: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/investor-kidnapped-driven-to-remote-desert-and-robbed-of-4000000-in-cryptocurrency-by-teenagers-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/investor-kidnapped-driven-to-remote-desert-and-robbed-of-4000000-in-cryptocurrency-by-teenagers-report/#respond Tue, 13 May 2025 05:32:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/investor-kidnapped-driven-to-remote-desert-and-robbed-of-4000000-in-cryptocurrency-by-teenagers-report/

Three teenagers are being accused of kidnapping a wealthy investor and then stealing $4 million in digital assets after driving him to a desert outside of Las Vegas.

Court records show that Belal Ashraf and Austin Fletcher, both 16, are now facing charges of robbery, kidnapping and extortion, while a third yet-named accomplice remains at large, reports local CBS-affiliate 8 News Now.

A juvenile court judge previously ruled that Ashraf and Fletcher, both from Florida, will face charges as adults. Prosecutors say the third teenager is no longer in the US.

According to court documents, the incident occurred in November and was reported to police by the unnamed victim, who was hosting a cryptocurrency event in downtown Las Vegas.

When he returned to his apartment from the event, the three suspects allegedly approached him after he parked his car and forced him into the back seat of their vehicle, where they held him at gunpoint.

Says court documents,

“[The victim] was told if he complied, he would live to see another day, and if he did not comply, they had his dad and would kill him. [The victim] had a towel placed over his head and was told by the suspects not to look at them.”

The teenagers allegedly demanded that the victim give them his passwords to access his financial accounts, enabling them to allegedly make off with $4 million in cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The three teenagers are accused of driving the victim about an hour away from Vegas to White Hills, Arizona, where they allegedly left the victim after stealing his crypto.

The man walked five miles across the desert to reach a gas station where he called a friend to pick him up, according to court documents.

Police say they were able to track down the suspects by honing in on a possible suspect’s vehicle traveling from Florida to Nevada, which was also spotted around the victim’s apartment.

Court proceedings against the two teens are ongoing.

$4,400 Drained From Bank of America Account After Owner Is Violently Robbed of His Unlocked Phone – Now the Bank Is Refusing To Reimburse: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/4400-drained-from-bank-of-america-account-after-owner-is-violently-robbed-of-his-unlocked-phone-now-the-bank-is-refusing-to-reimburse-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/4400-drained-from-bank-of-america-account-after-owner-is-violently-robbed-of-his-unlocked-phone-now-the-bank-is-refusing-to-reimburse-report/#respond Sun, 06 Apr 2025 03:20:10 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/4400-drained-from-bank-of-america-account-after-owner-is-violently-robbed-of-his-unlocked-phone-now-the-bank-is-refusing-to-reimburse-report/

Bank of America is reportedly refusing to reimburse a customer whose account was drained of thousands of dollars after thieves stole his unlocked phone.

BofA customer Brandon Wilson was leaving a bar in Chicago on Labor Day in September of 2024 when he was accosted by thugs, reports ABC 7 Chicago.

“As I was waiting for my Uber outside, a group of people surrounded me. They threatened me. They asked me to empty my wallet, to give them my phone, to unlock my phone… I was beyond terrified. I followed what they said, because I thought I was going to have my life taken from me.”

After getting home and finding $4,446 had been transferred out of his Bank of America account via multiple Zelle transactions, Wilson called the trillion-dollar lender and reported the fraudulent activity. Bank of America temporarily credited his account and Wilson assumed that would be the end of it.

“At that point I thought I was good.”

The week after, however, Bank of America sent Wilson a letter claiming he had authorized or permitted the transactions.

“Brandon, we’re unable to approve your recent claim. The charge was authorized by you or made by someone who has permission to use the card or account.”

Wilson, who has been with Bank of America since he was 14, submitted another fraud claim but the trillion-dollar lender again rejected his claim.

After ABC 7 Chicago reached out to Bank of America, a spokesperson for second-largest bank in the US after JPMorgan Chase said the case would be reviewed. Wilson is now hoping Bank of America will reimburse him.

“It’s clear as day that I didn’t make these charges.”
