From Cryptography Lab to Privacy Stewardship Mission

PSE abandoned its previous approach of pursuing “cool tech” for concrete problem-solving focused on ecosystem outcomes rather than internal projects.

The rebrand includes website updates to pse.dev and restructured team goals with particular emphasis on subtraction by default and problem-driven resource allocation.

The strategy involves continuous problem mapping, execution decisions across lead-support-monitor engagement levels, and public communication through newsletters, community calls, and working groups.

PSE draws inspiration from Protocol and EcoDev announcement simplicity while addressing feedback from Vitalik Buterin, Silviculture Society, and EF management.

Key initiatives include PlasmaFold development for private transfers using PCD and folding, targeting proof-of-concept by Devconnect.

Industry Experts Warn Public Ledgers Threaten Mass Adoption

The privacy push addresses growing concerns from industry veterans about Ethereum’s transparency model.

In an interview with Cryptonews in August, British Gold Trust’s Petro Golovko argues public blockchains expose salaries, business deals, and balance sheets, making crypto “unusable for regular people and impossible for institutions.

Golovko compares current blockchain transparency to the pre-SSL internet, when users refused to enter credit card numbers due to a lack of encryption.

He maintains that crypto remains stuck in this vulnerable phase, preventing the scaling that transformed e-commerce into a $6 trillion industry.

Institutional adoption concerns center on the exposure of trade secrets and the competitive disadvantage resulting from visible treasury movements.

Golovko warns that no board will approve systems exposing supply chains or financial operations globally, limiting crypto to speculation rather than serious commerce.

Vitalik Buterin’s April privacy advocacy stemmed from similar concerns about AI-driven surveillance and data misuse eroding personal autonomy.

His roadmap outlined four areas for enhancing privacy: anonymous payments, application-level privacy, secure data access, and network obfuscation.

The Ethereum co-founder advocated for wallets to integrate tools like Railgun and Privacy Pools, creating “shielded balances” that enable private-by-default transactions.

The Ethereum Foundation has released a roadmap to bring end-to-end privacy features to the Ethereum network, a layer-1 (L1) smart contract blockchain, and rebranded its “Privacy & Scaling Explorations” initiative to “Privacy Stewards of Ethereum” (PSE).

PSE said it aims to bring privacy solutions to the protocol, infrastructure, networking, application, and wallet layers in Friday’s announcement, and laid out several key goals for the next 3-6 months.

These included enabling private transfers through the development of the PlasmaFold layer-2 network, confidential voting, and privacy in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.

The roadmap also proposed exploring a workaround for personal data being broadcast through remote procedure call (RPC) services, and private identity solutions through zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, a way of verifying information without revealing the specific contents of that information. PSE outlined its mission:

“Ethereum deserves to become core infrastructure for global digital commerce, identity, collaboration, and the internet of value. But this potential is impossible without private data, transactions, and identity. We take responsibility within the Ethereum Foundation for ensuring privacy goals at the application layer are reached.

“We’ll work with protocol teams to ensure that any L1 changes needed to enable strong, censorship-resistant intermediary-free privacy take place,” the announcement continued.

Privacy has always been at the core of the cypherpunk ethos that spawned cryptocurrencies, and as crypto gains widespread adoption and the attention of governments, the crypto community is increasingly concerned about evolving digital financial surveillance methods.

The US government proposes government identity checks for DeFi

US government officials are currently weighing regulations for the crypto industry and markets, which include potential surveillance measures to track the activity of participants.

The US Department of the Treasury, headed by secretary Scott Bessent, is exploring proposals to add government identity checks to smart contracts, which has drawn backlash from the crypto community.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has repeatedly said that privacy is an essential human right. In April, Buterin warned that transparency is more of a bug, rather than a feature, in the digital age. 

Buterin said that privacy was needed to protect individuals in a time of growing state power and large, centralized corporations.

To improve the trading experience, dYdX is also introducing new types of orders. These include scale orders, which allow users to set multiple price targets across a range, and TWAP (time-weighted average price) orders, which break large trades into smaller pieces to be executed over time.

To reward participants who help bring activity to the platform, dYdX plans to launch a partner fee share program. This will give liquidity providers and other contributors the chance to earn up to half of the protocol’s trading fees. The goal is to encourage more involvement from users who drive volume and liquidity.

The top US-based crypto exchange by volume is announcing upcoming support for a low-cap artificial intelligence (AI)-powered decentralized finance (DeFi) token.

In a new announcement, Coinbase says that it has added Mamo (MAMO) to its listing roadmap, indicating plans to list the coin for trading in the future.

Mamo is a personal finance bot project that aims to boost user return on interest through tools powered by AI.

According to the platform’s whitepaper, the protocol:

Last week, two decentralized science altcoins faltered after gaining support from the top US-based crypto exchange platform by volume, Coinbase.

The Algorand Foundation has released a sweeping new roadmap to revive its ecosystem and push blockchain adoption into everyday life.

Announced on July 31, the 2025+ roadmap is a strategic pivot meant to reassert Algorand’s relevance in a market increasingly dominated by competitors like Solana and Ethereum.

According to CEO Staci Warden, the Foundation is laying the groundwork for digital infrastructure that mirrors real-world economic needs.

She stated:

“We’re building infrastructure for the real economy of the future: Systems that make digital identity self-sovereign, agentic payments an everyday reality, and tokenization an important tool for wealth accumulation.”

Planned features

A key roadmap element is a redesigned protocol model called the “Project King Safety.”

This initiative, which is scheduled to roll out through 2026, aims to rework how fees and incentives operate within the network. The goal is to ensure the protocol becomes self-sustaining while maintaining robust security. A detailed position paper is expected later this year.

Meanwhile, Algorand is also reshaping its approach to governance. By the third quarter of 2025, the Foundation plans to transition its grants program to a fully community-led model.

According to the statement, the move will shift decision-making power into the hands of an on-chain governance council, empowering users to allocate resources transparently and democratically.

Further refinements to the broader governance structure will follow in the coming months, with a formal proposal and voting framework slated for release by year-end.

Additionally, the Foundation is working on a new toolkit called Algokit 4.0 that combines AI-assisted coding with faster, more modular smart contract development.

The updated suite, expected in 2026, will feature a modernized storage framework and expanded language support, streamlining the onboarding process for builders from Web3 and traditional tech backgrounds.

Push into tokenization

Another one of the most significant developments in the roadmap is the push toward asset tokenization.

Algorand is building smart contract-based representations of traditional financial instruments such as debt and equity. These tokenized products will follow ACTUS standards to meet compliance and interoperability benchmarks.

According to the network, a minimum viable product for tokenized debt assets is scheduled for Q4 2025.

This move signals Algorand’s intent to become a leader in the convergence of traditional finance (TradFi) and DeFi by offering a compliant, blockchain-native foundation for capital markets.

The tokenized asset market has already seen notable expansion, with Ethereum currently at the forefront. However, Ripple projects the sector could grow to $18.9 trillion by 2033, suggesting there’s substantial opportunity for other blockchain networks to gain ground.

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake unveiled the “Lean Ethereum” proposal on July 31 that reframes the base layer around the imperatives of survivability against nation-state and quantum threats and orders-of-magnitude performance gains without sacrificing decentralization.

The new guidelines were dubbed “fort mode” and “beast mode,” respectively.

Published on the Ethereum Foundation blog, the vision argued that the network can simultaneously harden security and radically scale by anchoring the mainnet in hash-based cryptography and restructuring all three protocol sublayers, which are consensus, data, and execution.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Drake recently addressed the concept during an ETH-focused event in Berlin.

Fort mode and beast mode

Drake’s security thesis highlights that Ethereum must run for decades, even centuries, under adversarial conditions. 

According to the roadmap, “if the internet is up, Ethereum is up” is the goal. On performance, Lean Ethereum targets roughly 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) on mainnet via aggressive vertical scaling and approximately 1 million TPS on layer-2 (L2) blockchains via expansive horizontal scaling. 

He added that enabling “moon-math” is no longer aspirational, suggesting real-time zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs) for execution and data availability sampling (DAS) for data throughput. 

A complementary usability aim is full-chain verification on consumer devices, such as browsers, phones, and wallets.

Three “lean” sublayers

Lean Ethereum proposes coordinated upgrades across three different layers. The first is “Lean consensus,” or Beacon Chain 2.0, focused on hardening the Beacon Chain for maximum security and decentralization, with near-instant finality measured in seconds.

Lean data (Blobs 2.0) is the second layer. The goal is to enable post-quantum “blobs” with granular sizing to preserve a calldata-like developer experience while boosting throughput.

Lastly, Lean execution (EVM 2.0) consists of a minimal, SNARK-friendly instruction set that preserves EVM compatibility and network effects but accelerates proving and verification.

Together, these changes aim to deliver “performance abundance” under non-negotiable continuity and simplicity constraints.

Hash-based crypto as the standard fabric

Lean Ethereum treats the hash function as the fundamental primitive across layers. Aggregate signatures in consensus supplanting Boneh-Lynn-Shacham (BLS), hash-based commitments replacing Kate, Zaverucha, and Goldberg (KZG) in the data layer, and hash-centric zkVMs streamlining execution verification. 

The approach is designed to simultaneously future-proof against quantum adversaries while harmonizing with the rapid rise of SNARKs across the stack.

Drake said that Lean Ethereum is as much an engineering aesthetic as a roadmap. The concept is based on minimal modules, encapsulated complexity, formal verification, and provable security and optimality. 

The emphasis on “lean craft” seeks to prune legacy complexity while standardizing on primitives that are easier to reason and verify.
