Indie developers Cold River Games have announced a $2 million USD raise for Crystalfall – a web3 action-RPG set to launch in 2025.

The Cold River team boasts experience working on titles such as Path of Exile, Stellaris and Pillars of Eternity – and they’re set to bring that experience to the Diablo-esque Crystalfall title, with Parker Heath, Gaming Lead at funding participants Avalanche, stating that “it’s a bold bet on where the future of gaming is headed.”

Blockchain technology is set to play a major role within Crystalfall, with it likely that Avalanche will power these systems in-game. Cold River CEO Åke André has stated that with their focus on loot progression, “maintaining a secure game economy is an important part [of the experience]”, and that “while this technology isn’t suitable for all types of games, we find that it has a place in ARPGs where it can enhance the barter economy.”

What is Crystalfall?

Crystalfall is an upcoming free-to-play ARPG, expected to be built on Avalanche, and to be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Developed by Swedish studio Cold River Games, and inspired by the likes of Path of Exile and Diablo, players dive into a post-apocalyptic steampunk world as a mutated hybrid, wielding an array of unique weapons, facing an array of challenges, and encountering a truly old-school RPG experience.

In recent weeks, Cold River have revealed new details about Crystalfall, including the staff-wielding Technomancer character, an expanded talent tree, and lootable skills.

The game is expected to become available later in 2025 on both Steam and the Epic Games Store – though as of writing, no information has been shared regarding an exact date of release, or any accessible beta tests.

How will these funds assist Crystalfall?

According to André, these funds came at an important time – especially considering the VC landscape for web3 gaming.

“I’ve seen a lot of studios that have failed to raise money lately because the market is very tough,” André said. “It’s a positive in the sense that the money was very easy to come by. In the past, I think VCs were just throwing money to the left or right. And later they wanted more KPIs and were more conservative. It means a lot we were successful with a Swedish investor coming into a Swedish game studio. I’m very happy.”

Alongside Beam Investments, the funding round was joined by Partnerinvest Norr, CoinFund, the Avalanche Foundation, and A100X.

“We are incredibly grateful to have such strong partners backing our studio and believing in our vision for Crystalfall,” said André.

US Bitcoin edge could power next era of American prosperity – River https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-bitcoin-edge-could-power-next-era-of-american-prosperity-river/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-bitcoin-edge-could-power-next-era-of-american-prosperity-river/#respond Tue, 20 May 2025 21:09:05 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-bitcoin-edge-could-power-next-era-of-american-prosperity-river/

America’s efforts to become a global hub for Bitcoin (BTC) and the wider digital asset ecosystem could serve as a foundation for a new phase of domestic economic growth, according to a report published May 20 by River.

The “America Report 2025” asserted that the US is in a unique position to benefit from Bitcoin’s institutionalization across financial, energy, and technological sectors.

The report cited survey data showing that over 40% of American adults under 40 have used or invested in Bitcoin, highlighting the asset’s generational relevance.

Among small business owners surveyed, 29% indicated interest in accepting or holding Bitcoin for treasury diversification.

Institutional maturity

River outlined that US firms have developed the world’s most mature Bitcoin financial infrastructure by launching multiple spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by major asset managers, widespread adoption of institutional-grade custodial services, and the growing use of Bitcoin in corporate treasuries.

The report pointed to increased participation by pension funds, RIAs, and Fortune 500 companies as evidence of Bitcoin’s continued assimilation into the legacy financial system.

According to River’s estimates, US-based firms account for more than 75% of global spot Bitcoin ETF assets under management as of early 2025. Coinbase Custody, which holds assets for multiple ETFs, reportedly custodies over 900,000 BTC on behalf of institutions.

Beyond institutional flows, River highlighted a sociocultural dimension to the Bitcoin shift. The report referenced private wealth migration toward Bitcoin-friendly jurisdictions within the US, including Florida and Tennessee. These jurisdictions offer tax incentives and favorable policies which appeal to high-net-worth individuals.

Furthermore, several publicly listed Bitcoin mining firms in the US are also driving domestic capacity expansion. The report cites that over 38% of the Bitcoin network’s total hashrate originates from the US, a share nearly double that of the next leading country.

This concentration of computational power gives the US a structural advantage in Bitcoin’s governance and security model. It also creates new forms of demand-side grid flexibility, as miners act as responsive power consumers that stabilize regional electricity grids.

Strategic policy trends and social integration

The report emphasized that framing Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset, akin to gold, may become central to future US economic policy.

Additionally, the report noted that US states are passing legislation supporting Bitcoin custody, mining, and legal protections for users. These legislations create “Bitcoin corridors” that attract capital and technical talent.

Bitcoin is particularly attractive to younger generations and small business owners who are concerned about dollar debasement and inflation risk. It acts as a financial sovereignty vehicle.

River characterized this demographic movement as a “bottom-up complement” to top-down institutional adoption.

The report also noted that Bitcoin’s integration across institutional, industrial, and individual levels forms a strategic platform for domestic capital formation.

River CEO Has No Interest in Listing Altcoins out of Fear of ‘Forever Hamster Wheel of Memecoins’ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/river-ceo-has-no-interest-in-listing-altcoins-out-of-fear-of-forever-hamster-wheel-of-memecoins/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/river-ceo-has-no-interest-in-listing-altcoins-out-of-fear-of-forever-hamster-wheel-of-memecoins/#respond Mon, 31 Mar 2025 16:29:22 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/river-ceo-has-no-interest-in-listing-altcoins-out-of-fear-of-forever-hamster-wheel-of-memecoins/

The CEO of the Bitcoin (BTC)-focused exchange River says he has no interest in providing access to anything other than the flagship crypto asset.

In a post on the social media platform X, River CEO Alexander Leishman says crypto exchanges that list altcoins – which is almost all of them – have become more like casinos stuck on a “forever hamster wheel of memecoins.”

“There are two paths for a crypto exchange/brokerage:

1. Bitcoin-only path – focus on helping people build and preserve long-term wealth through hard money. This path leads to an exchange looking more like a ‘bank’ long term.

2. Multi-asset trading platform – add as many coins as possible and build the business model around speculative trading. This leads to the exchange becoming more like a casino.

Both can make money, but these are the only two options. The minute an exchange adds one non-Bitcoin token, they are signing up to be on the forever hamster wheel of memecoins. It makes no sense to list ETH if you don’t list the tokens issued on ETH, and the same goes for Solana.

There are many successful crypto casinos, but I have no interest in building such a business. The casino business model is built around maximal extraction from customers, and the Bitcoin only model is focused on helping people build long-term wealth.”

According to River, currency debasement is vastly larger than officially admitted, and is the reason the exchange is Bitcoin-focused.

“There is a 275% gap between the inflation you’re told and real inflation.

This is why we Bitcoin.”

Listing an altcoin traps exchanges on 'forever hamster wheel' — River CEO https://earlybirdsinvest.com/listing-an-altcoin-traps-exchanges-on-forever-hamster-wheel-river-ceo/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/listing-an-altcoin-traps-exchanges-on-forever-hamster-wheel-river-ceo/#respond Sun, 30 Mar 2025 03:40:26 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/listing-an-altcoin-traps-exchanges-on-forever-hamster-wheel-river-ceo/

When a cryptocurrency exchange lists its first altcoin, it sets itself up for an endless cycle of launching memecoins, warns a Bitcoin-only institution executive.

“The minute an exchange adds one non-Bitcoin token, they are signing up to be on the forever hamster wheel of memecoins,” River Financial CEO Alex Leishman said in a March 29 X post. “It makes no sense to list ETH if you don’t list the tokens issued on ETH, and the same goes for Solana,” Leishman said.

River has no interest in building a “successful crypto casino”

Leishman said while there are many “successful crypto casinos,” he has no interest in building one. River Financial is a Bitcoin-only financial institution focusing on buying and selling Bitcoin (BTC).  Several companies have opted for the Bitcoin-only approach, including Swan Bitcoin, Bull Bitcoin, and decentralized exchange Bisq.

Leishman claimed that multi-asset trading platforms prioritize short-term speculation over wealth accumulation:

“The casino business model is built around maximal extraction from customers, and the Bitcoin-only model is focused on helping people build long-term wealth.”

Critics have voiced this point before, even during the memecoin uptrend in early 2024. In April 2024, A16z chief technology officer Eddy Lazzarin said that memecoins hamper the long-term vision of crypto that has kept so many of the original builders in the space.

“At best, it looks like a risky casino,” Lazzarin said.

The overall memecoin market cap has taken a significant downturn since the beginning of 2025. Since Jan. 1, the memecoin market cap has slumped almost 49% to $48.49 billion at the time of publication, according to CoinMarketCap data.

However, while altcoins have historically been more volatile than Bitcoin, offering them alongside Bitcoin has been a lucrative move for crypto exchanges and brokers.

On Feb. 12, Robinhood, which offers several cryptocurrencies to its customers, reported a 700% year-over-year surge in Q4 2024 cryptocurrency revenue.

Some traders seem to interpret a memecoin listing on an exchange as validation of its credibility. Among the 15 memecoins listed by crypto exchange Binance in 2024, 12 saw significant increases in value after going live on the exchange, pseudonymous onchain analyst Ai_9684xtpa said in November.

CoinGecko founder Bobby Ong recently speculated that the memecoin market might be headed toward an “extreme case of power law,” where 99.99% fail and a few rise to the top and endure.
