Trish Turner has stepped down as head of the United States Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) digital assets division, leaving the role after just three months.

Key Takeaways:

  • IRS digital assets chief Trish Turner resigned after just three months and will join Crypto Tax Girl as tax director.
  • Her departure comes amid growing scrutiny of the IRS’s handling of crypto taxation and calls for clearer policy frameworks.
  • Turner’s move reflects a wider trend of senior regulators transitioning into crypto advisory roles as the industry faces major compliance shifts.

Turner announced her departure in a LinkedIn post on Friday, reflecting on her two-decade career at the agency.

“After more than 20 years with the IRS, I have closed an extraordinary chapter of my career with deep appreciation for those who shaped my journey and made the work so meaningful,” she wrote.

Turner Vows to Bridge Gap Between Industry and Regulators

Turner added that she looked forward to “building bridges between industry and regulators” from a new position outside the agency.

Bloomberg Tax later reported that Turner will join Crypto Tax Girl, a private tax advisory firm, as its new tax director.

Founder Laura Walter confirmed the appointment, saying Turner’s expertise will help clients navigate the growing list of compliance challenges.

“With all of the big crypto tax and compliance changes on the horizon, we are excited to have Trish on board,” Walter said.

Her resignation comes at a critical moment for U.S. crypto taxation. The IRS has been under increasing pressure to modernize its digital asset strategy, following repeated criticism from lawmakers and watchdog agencies over its handling of crypto-related investigations.

Turner herself was only appointed in May, following the departures of Sulolit “Raj” Mukherjee and Seth Wilks, who left the division after roughly a year.

The shake-up coincides with heightened congressional scrutiny. Last month, the House Committee on Ways and Means announced a hearing on how to establish a clear tax framework for digital assets.

Earlier in July, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration recommended reforms to the IRS’s criminal investigation unit, citing failures to follow protocols in crypto cases.

Meanwhile, the broader regulatory environment has shifted under the Trump administration.

In April, the president signed a resolution overturning a Biden-era rule that would have required decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols to report user transactions to the IRS.

Turner’s move to the private sector highlights the ongoing migration of senior government officials into crypto-focused firms, as the industry braces for sweeping changes in U.S. tax and compliance policy.

IRS Ramps Up Crypto Tax Crackdown With Surge in Warning Letters

As reported, the IRS has intensified its scrutiny of crypto investors in the United States, sending out a wave of warning letters over the past two months.

Tax experts say the letters point to growing enforcement efforts after the agency flagged discrepancies in filings linked to digital asset transactions.

CoinLedger, a crypto tax filing platform, said it received nearly 800 customer support queries about IRS letters between May and June, nine times more than the same period in 2024.

Tax attorneys have also seen a spike in outreach, with some firms now fielding multiple calls each week from concerned clients, compared to little or no activity last year.

The campaign recalls earlier IRS crackdowns in 2020 and 2021, when the agency issued widespread compliance letters after obtaining exchange data, including records from Coinbase.

Former front-runner for CFTC chair role resigns to lead Blockchain Association https://earlybirdsinvest.com/former-front-runner-for-cftc-chair-role-resigns-to-lead-blockchain-association/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/former-front-runner-for-cftc-chair-role-resigns-to-lead-blockchain-association/#respond Wed, 14 May 2025 21:04:21 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/former-front-runner-for-cftc-chair-role-resigns-to-lead-blockchain-association/

Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Commissioner Summer Mersinger will depart the agency on May 30 to become the Blockchain Association’s new CEO, effective June 2, according to a May 14 announcement.

The announcement states that Mersinger’s appointment comes at a critical legislative moment for digital assets in Washington, where the Blockchain Association is pushing for congressional action on market structure and stablecoin legislation.

The group described its selection process as exhaustive and noted that regulatory experience and Capitol Hill background motivated Mersinger’s choice.

Crypto advocacy

Notably, Mersinger had recently been floated as one of the top contenders to become chair of the CFTC in a potential Trump administration.

A January report citing sources familiar with internal transition discussions listed her alongside Brian Quintenz and Marco Santori as front-runners. Her reputation for articulating balanced digital asset policy made her a favored candidate among industry participants.

During her tenure at the CFTC, Mersinger gained recognition for advocating policy frameworks that accommodate digital asset innovation while maintaining consumer protections. She notably dissented from the CFTC’s enforcement action against Uniswap in September 2024, arguing for congressional clarity rather than enforcement-led regulation.

Her prior experience includes several roles in Senator John Thune’s office, which gives her deep familiarity with the legislative process.

Mersinger succeeds Kristin Smith, who served as the group’s founding CEO and is credited with transforming the association from a boutique operation into the sector’s leading trade voice.

Industry welcomes Mersinger’s appointment

Senator Pat Toomey congratulated Mersinger on social media, saying she “brings a great background at a very important moment for crypto,” while also commending Smith’s work establishing the association’s influence.

Crypto Council for Innovation president Ji Kim said he looks forward to continued collaboration, calling it “important work that lies ahead.”

Blockchain Association board member Jake Chervinsky, who also serves as chief legal officer at Variant Fund, wrote:

“Comm’r Mersinger has been an amazing champion for crypto during her time at the CFTC, and now the whole industry will benefit from her leadership.”

Bill Hughes, counsel at Consensys, described Mersinger’s “enthusiasm for the challenge ahead” and confidence in her ability to navigate the industry through the current policy environment.

Mersinger’s introduction to the association’s membership will follow her departure from the CFTC.

SBF’s Crisis Manager Resigns After Surprise Jailhouse Interview https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sbfs-crisis-manager-resigns-after-surprise-jailhouse-interview/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sbfs-crisis-manager-resigns-after-surprise-jailhouse-interview/#respond Fri, 07 Mar 2025 20:06:56 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sbfs-crisis-manager-resigns-after-surprise-jailhouse-interview/

Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the disgraced founder of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has conducted a second interview from prison, once again drawing controversy and causing repercussions for his crisis management team.

The interview, hosted by Tucker Carlson and posted on social media on Bankman-Fried’s 33rd birthday, took even his own public relations representative, Mark Botnick, by surprise. As a result, Botnick has resigned from his position, stating he had no prior knowledge of the interview and was not involved in its planning.

In a statement to Business Insider, Botnick said,

“As of today, I no longer represent SBF.”

It is important to note that Botnick is a seasoned public relations strategist who previously worked with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He has managed Bankman-Fried’s image since the collapse of FTX in November 2022 and played a crucial role in navigating the embattled entrepreneur through various legal challenges, including his bail violations and pre-trial imprisonment.

However, SBF’s increasing unpredictability appears to have strained their working relationship. Recently, he posted messages on X advising on former President Donald Trump’s plans to remove federal employees – actions Botnick claims were neither approved nor authorized by him.

Jailhouse Confessions: SBF Says He’s Not a Criminal

During the interview, Bankman-Fried reflected on his prison experience and commented on fellow inmate Sean “Diddy” Combs at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, saying,

“He’s been kind to people in the unit. He’s been kind to me. It’s also, it’s a position no one wants to be in, you know – obviously he doesn’t, I don’t. As you said, it’s, it’s kind of a soul crushing place for the world in general.”

Despite his conviction and ongoing appeals, Bankman-Fried maintained his innocence, telling Carlson, “I don’t think I was a criminal.” He also estimated that, at the very least, he would be in his late 40s when released, despite being sentenced until age 57.

His prior interviews with major outlets such as The Financial Times, Bloomberg News, and Vox have already been used against him in court and have served as evidence of how he allegedly misled investors.

SBF’s Political Shape-Shifting

SBF’s political allegiances appear to be as fluid as his business ethics, as seen in his interview with a right-wing political commentator. After previously positioning himself as a major donor to the Democratic Party, he now seems to be pivoting toward President Trump and the Republican Party.

He criticized Joe Biden as well as former SEC Chair Gary Gensler, whose aggressive stance on cryptocurrency regulation did little to help the FTX founder’s cause. Now serving a 25-year prison sentence, Bankman-Fried appears to be eyeing a different path to redemption – through the possibility of a Trump pardon.

Speculation about a potential pardon first gained traction in December which was primarily fueled by discussions of Bankman-Fried’s deep Democratic ties. Even Elon Musk weighed in, saying he would be “shocked” if a pardon weren’t on the table. However, as his legal avenues have dwindled, reports have surfaced that his parents have been lobbying for clemency from Trump, suggesting that SBF’s political calculus has shifted dramatically.
