The iconic “disappearing” statue of pseudonymous Bitcoin (BTC) creator Satoshi Nakamoto, reported stolen on Saturday, has been recovered, according to Satoshigallery, the art collective responsible for installing the statue.

Municipal workers from the city of Lugano, Switzerland, recovered the statue, which was thrown into Lake Lugano after it was removed from its base in Parco Ciani, a lakefront park in the Swiss city, by unknown persons.

The municipal workers discovered the statue in several pieces, indicating vandalism, rather than theft for monetary gain. The statue was only welded to the base at two points at the statue’s feet, which remained fixed to the base.

Satoshigallery offered a 0.1 BTC reward, valued at over $11,000, for the recovery of the statue, and Cointelegraph reached out to the art collective for comment but was unable to obtain a response by the time of publication.

The iconic work of art by the Italian artist and Bitcoin advocate Valentina Picozzi was unveiled in October 2024 and has become a flagship symbol of the Bitcoin community. The statue took 21 months to fully plan and construct, according to the artist.

Bitcoin community reacts to vandalism against iconic symbol

The Bitcoin community voiced reactions of disgust and defiance at the theft and vandalism of the statue, which has since become a symbol of the Bitcoin movement and the digital currency’s mysterious creator.

“Such a tasteless and stupid thing to do. Hope they find who did it,” Gabor Gurbacs, founder and CEO of blockchain loyalty rewards and tokenization platform Pointsville, wrote in a X post.

Others like pseudonymous Bitcoin advocate Gritto theorized that “drunk” partygoers celebrating Swiss National Day, the holiday that commemorates the founding charter of the European country, were responsible for the vandalism.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino reacted to the recovery of the iconic statue with a simple heart emoji on social media.

“You can steal our symbol, but you will never be able to steal our souls,” Satoshigallery said, while reiterating the art collective’s commitment to placing similar statues in 21 locations around the globe.

Crypto and Web3 security incidents led to over $801.3 million in losses across 144 incidents in Q2 2025. CertiK reported that this reflects a 52.1% decrease in value lost from the previous quarter.

The quarter also saw 59 fewer incidents during this period.

Ethereum Hit Hardest Again

Phishing was the most damaging attack vector, as it saw $395 million being stolen across 52 incidents. Code vulnerabilities followed suit and recorded $235.8 million in losses across 47 incidents.

In its latest report, CertiK said that Ethereum saw the highest number of incidents. The network recorded 70 hacks, scams, and exploits, resulting in $65.4 million in losses for the quarter.

Additionally, funds worth $181 million were recovered, which brought the adjusted losses for the second quarter to $620.4 million. The average loss per incident was $4.3 million, while the median was around $104,000.

Zooming out, the blockchain security firm also reported total losses of $2.47 billion across 344 incidents for the first half of 2025. Wallet compromises were the costliest during this period, as these breaches accounted for $1.71 billion in losses across 34 incidents. Next up was phishing, with $410.7 million stolen across 132 incidents, which made it the most frequent attack type so far this year.

So far this year, Ethereum recorded 175 incidents in H1, resulting in $1.63 billion in losses. A total of $187.3 million was recovered in the first half of the year, pushing the adjusted total losses to $2.29 billion. Meanwhile, the average loss per incident for H1 was $7.13 million, with a median loss of $89,026.

Two Major Hacks Skew Trend

CertiK noted that while headline figures suggest worsening crypto security, two incidents alone accounted for around $1.78 billion of 2025’s losses – the Bybit hack and the Cetus Protocol breach.

Hackers exploited Bybit’s cold wallet infrastructure in February 2025 by altering transaction logic and masking interfaces, which enabled them to steal over $1.5 billion in Ether. North Korea’s notorious state-sponsored hacking entity, the Lazarus Group, was responsible for it.

Besides, Sui-based Cetus, on the other hand, suffered an exploit in an overflow check within the project’s liquidity calculation function, which resulted in $225 million in losses in May.

Without these two incidents, total losses would be $690 million, which essentially indicates that the broader security trend may not be as severe as the raw figures imply.

ATM after a family lost $25,000 in a scam.

A report by KFDM on June 17 explained that the family was contacted by someone posing as a government worker. The caller informed them that they owed a large amount in fines and needed to pay through Bitcoin.

Following the instructions, the family deposited the money at a nearby machine operated by Bitcoin Depot.

After hearing the report, Sheriff Chuck Havard got a warrant, opened the machine, and recovered around $32,000 in cash. This included the $25,000 the family had sent, as well as additional money from other deposits still in the ATM.

The incident has raised concerns about whether the action was appropriate and if the kiosk operator was treated fairly.

A Reddit user questioned whether officials had taken money from someone who had no connection to the scam. Another compared it to seizing a store’s cash register just because a scam victim used it to buy gift cards.

Sheriff Havard stated that his team would use all available tools to protect residents and their property. He also noted that crimes involving digital currency can be hard to investigate. So far, the person who tricked the family has not been found.

Meanwhile, Spokane, Washington’s second-largest city, recently decided to ban all crypto ATMs. Why? Read the full story.
