More than 1,200 cybercriminals have been arrested in a large-scale Interpol operation that spanned 18 African countries and the United Kingdom.

The operation, called Operation Serengeti 2.0, disrupted networks accused of defrauding 88,000 victims and led to the recovery of about $97.4 million.

Authorities in Angola carried out some of the most notable seizures. They shut down 25 crypto mining facilities and accused 60 Chinese nationals of illegally validating blockchain transactions.

Along with the arrests, 45 unauthorized electricity plants and mining equipment worth more than $37 million were confiscated. Officials said this hardware will be redirected to help supply power to low-income areas.

Investigators also exposed an “online investment fraud scheme” that encouraged people to invest in digital assets through flashy advertisements. The scam trapped 65,000 victims and caused losses of nearly $300 million.

Fifteen people have been detained so far, with evidence, such as domains, phone numbers, and bank accounts, already secured.

The campaign also stretched beyond financial crime. In Angola, officers disrupted a suspected trafficking network and seized 372 fake passports tied to seven different nationalities.

Preparations for Serengeti 2.0 began well in advance. Law enforcement teams were trained in blockchain analysis and ransomware tracking. Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza explained:

Each Interpol-coordinated operation builds on the last, deepening cooperation, increasing information sharing and developing investigative skills across member countries.

US authorities raid ransomware operator, seize $2.8M in crypto https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-authorities-raid-ransomware-operator-seize-2-8m-in-crypto/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-authorities-raid-ransomware-operator-seize-2-8m-in-crypto/#respond Sat, 16 Aug 2025 02:31:20 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-authorities-raid-ransomware-operator-seize-2-8m-in-crypto/

The U.S. Justice Department authorized the seizure of more than $2.8 million in cryptocurrency, cash, and other assets from a suspected ransomware operator, according to an Aug. 14 announcement.

Federal prosecutors unsealed six warrants tied to Ianis Aleksandrovich Antropenko, charging him with conspiring to commit computer fraud and abuse, committing computer fraud and abuse, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

In addition to the crypto, authorities also seized $70,000 in cash and a luxury vehicle. The digital assets seized in the raid are expected to be added to the government’s growing crypto reserve.

According to the Justice Department, the assets were linked to ransomware proceeds and laundered through methods including the now-defunct mixing service ChipMixer, which was dismantled in an international operation in 2023.

Officials said Antropenko also converted crypto to cash and made structured deposits to avoid detection.

Part of expanding federal stockpile

The case marks the latest government action involving crypto that could be directed into the U.S. national crypto reserve, created by an executive order enacted by President Donald Trump in March.

Earlier this week, the Justice Department announced the seizure of roughly $1 million from the ransomware group BlackSuit and moved to claim $2.4 million in Bitcoin (BTC) seized by the FBI in Dallas in April.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently revealed that the government’s Bitcoin holdings, acquired through criminal asset forfeitures after victim restitution, totaled about $20 billion.

Bessent drew attention earlier in the week after saying the government would not be buying additional Bitcoin for the reserve. He later backtracked and clarified that the Treasury will continue to seek “budget-neutral” ways to expand its holdings.

Trump’s DOJ asks for a one-day sentence in Breonna Taylor raid conviction https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-doj-asks-for-a-one-day-sentence-in-breonna-taylor-raid-conviction/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-doj-asks-for-a-one-day-sentence-in-breonna-taylor-raid-conviction/#respond Fri, 18 Jul 2025 08:56:40 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-doj-asks-for-a-one-day-sentence-in-breonna-taylor-raid-conviction/

This story appeared in The Logoff, a daily newsletter that helps you stay informed about the Trump administration without letting political news take over your life. Subscribe here.

Welcome to The Logoff: In a major reversal from the Biden administration, the Justice Department is asking for a token one-day prison sentence for an ex-police officer who fired shots into Breonna Taylor’s home during a fatal raid in March 2020.

Why is this in the news now? Brett Hankison, a former Louisville, Kentucky, officer, is set to be sentenced next week after being convicted last year of violating Taylor’s civil rights. He could face a maximum sentence of up to life in prison — but under the DOJ request, would ultimately serve no time.

What did Hankison do? Hankison was one of multiple officers to execute a raid on Taylor’s apartment in March 2020. He blindly fired 10 shots into her apartment through a covered window and door, some of which entered an occupied adjoining apartment. None of the bullets Hankison fired ultimately struck a person, but Taylor was shot and killed by another Louisville police officer.

What does the DOJ request mean for Hankison? If the judge — a Trump appointee — adheres to the DOJ sentencing memo, Hankison will never return to jail for his conviction. The memo requests that he receive credit for time already served, rendering even the single-day sentence irrelevant. It also calls for three years of supervised release and a meager fine as part of the sentence.

Why does this matter? Breonna Taylor’s death was one of several high-profile police killings in early 2020 that led to widespread racial justice protests following the murder of George Floyd that May. Since then, strides — though often halting and imperfect — have been made toward police accountability and addressing racial discrimination in policing. The DOJ sentencing memo is the latest sign of the Trump administration’s complete lack of interest in those efforts and preference to roll the clock back to an earlier era.

And with that, it’s time to log off…

Hi readers! A second thank-you in as many days for your emails — I truly appreciated all of the animal photos.

Today, I wanted to highlight this podcast by my colleague Sean Illing, about the idea of “hopeful pessimism.” Sean talks with Mara van der Lugt about what the term means and how to sustain hope when you’re feeling pessimistic. As she puts it, hope can be “oriented not on certainty or expectation, but rather on the openness of the future” and a commitment to our values. It’s a fascinating, lovely discussion that’s really worth your time — I hope you take a moment to listen.

DEA is hitting the cartels where it hurts, with arrests, with seizures, and with relentless pressure. “We are dismantling these networks piece by piece, and we won’t stop until the last brick of their empire falls.

The Sinaloa cartel is one of six Mexican organizations the US has labeled as a global terrorist group. It is involved in trafficking cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, fentanyl, cannabis, and MDMA.

Recent raids highlight the scale and creativity of the cartel’s smuggling operations, according to the press release.

Five people tied to a cryptocurrency fraud scheme that stole close to $540 million from over 5,000 people were arrested in Spain.

Three of the arrests took place on the Canary Islands, while the other two were made in Madrid.

The investigation, which began in 2023, involved law enforcement teams from Spain, Estonia, France, and the United States. A crypto expert was also brought to Spain to help authorities examine digital evidence during the raids.

According to investigators, those behind the operation set up a wide network to transfer and hide the stolen funds. This included using people across different countries to withdraw money, transfer it between bank accounts, and move it through crypto wallets.

Much of the laundering was done through fake companies and bank accounts registered in other people’s names. Police stated that part of this setup was based in Hong Kong, where the group used business and banking channels to store and move funds.

Footage released by Europol showed officers from the Spanish Civil Guard entering homes and arresting suspects. The video also shows one person being led out in handcuffs.

Although the arrests have been made, the investigation is still ongoing. Authorities are currently trying to uncover the full scale of the group’s activity and track down more people who may have been involved.

Europol said this kind of online fraud is becoming more common across Europe and affects not just individuals, but also companies and public services.

Indian authorities have shut down the country’s biggest online drug operation, allegedly run by a 35-year-old mechanical engineer from Kerala.

The man, identified as Edison from Muvattupuzha, was arrested on July 1 after months of surveillance. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) carried out the arrest under a plan called “MELON”.

Officers found more than 1,100 LSD blotters, over 130 grams of ketamine, and cryptocurrency worth around ₹70 lakh (about $82,000).

Edison is accused of running the network for nearly two years under the name “Ketamelon”.

According to officials, he ordered drugs from overseas suppliers, including a UK-based seller called “Gunga Din, one of the largest lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) providers globally.

He then mailed packages to buyers in major cities such as Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, and areas in Himachal Pradesh. Records suggested that he sent more than 600 shipments while keeping his identity hidden.

Reports stated that Edison moved his earnings through Monero

, a cryptocurrency known for its privacy features that conceal transaction details.

The investigation took four months. Officers tracked shipments, monitored online forums, and followed cryptocurrency trails before linking the orders back to Edison’s home.

Officials stated that while Kerala usually sees under 1,000 LSD blotters seized in a whole year, Edison alone was allegedly selling close to 10,000 each month.

India’s top investigative agency has arrested a man in New Delhi and seized around ₹2.8 crore (about $327,000) in cryptocurrency.

According to a June 11 press release by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the arrest took place during searches at three locations on June 10, all of which were linked to an online fraud ring targeting individuals in the US and Canada.

The suspect, Rahul Arora, is accused of helping run a scam that tricked people by pretending to be government or tech support workers.

During the raids, officials found tools used to fake caller ID, devices meant for international calls, software for collecting personal information, and recordings of phone conversations. The team also recovered ₹22 lakh (about $26,400) in cash that had not been declared.

The CBI stated in a press note that these searches were based on solid leads and that they had discovered evidence of a group involved in cyber fraud across countries.

The raids were part of a campaign called Chakra-V, which brings together Indian state cyber units, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), and international groups like Interpol and the FBI. The campaign focuses on finding digital clues, blocking illegal use of cryptocurrencies, and monitoring criminal activity on the dark web.

Officials said they have also made arrangements to store and manage the seized crypto in line with Indian laws. The rules require the assets to be handled while the legal process continues.

Brazilian Police Seize $45,000 Worth of Crypto in ‘Protection Racket’ Raid https://earlybirdsinvest.com/brazilian-police-seize-45000-worth-of-crypto-in-protection-racket-raid/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/brazilian-police-seize-45000-worth-of-crypto-in-protection-racket-raid/#respond Mon, 21 Apr 2025 03:23:22 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/brazilian-police-seize-45000-worth-of-crypto-in-protection-racket-raid/ Brazilian police have confiscated cryptoassets worth $45,000 in a major raid on a protection racket ring that appears to have targeted businesspeople in the south of the country.

The Portuguese-language media outlet Livecoins reported that officers served multiple warrants in several cities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Police think that the gang’s ringleaders are all prisoners, and that the entire racket was orchestrated from Brazilian jails.

Protection Racket: Suspects ‘Used Crypto to Launder Funds’

The raids come as part of a wider crackdown named Operation Timeo. The state’s Polícia Civil (PCRS) officers have said they seized tokens from crypto wallets and blocked suspects’ bank accounts.

The state of Rio Grande do Sul highlighted in red on a map of Brazil.

The PCRS said that the suspects launched a fraud network to blackmail the owners of small automobile trading garages.

Officers added that the suspects also operated a “money laundering scheme.” This scheme reportedly used crypto to process the money they made from their fraud operations.

The PCRS added that one suspect has also been charged with carrying a firearm without a permit.

Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Suspects ‘Targeted Auto Traders in Several Cities’

A police spokesperson confirmed that officers had seized coins from multiple wallets in “several cities.”

The PCRS probe saw a total of 60 agents execute 11 search and seizure warrants against suspects in the cities of Porto Alegre, Novo Hamburgo, São Leopoldo, Portão, Cachoeirinha, and Imbé.

The São Leopoldo organized crime-fighting department orchestrated the operation. The PCRS said it also froze a total of 13.3 million reais ($2.3 million) in bank accounts belonging to 11 suspects.

The police did not disclose the methods they used to seize the crypto. Nor did they reveal the type of coins the suspects used.

Officers think that the gang targeted auto garage owners in Estância Velha, Novo Hamburgo, Ivoti, Sapiranga, and Portão.

The garages in question were owned by individuals who trade and repair second-hand vehicles.

The ringleaders allegedly sent individuals to order the business owners to hand over money “to avoid attacks on their businesses.”

Operation Timeo: Ongoing Investigation

Officers said they were investigating 10 suspects and one company. All of these parties, police said, “have links to inmates who had already been preventively arrested” during previous phases of Operation Timeo.

Investigations are ongoing, the PCRS said. A spokesperson said further investigations “may reveal a broader criminal network” involving extortion and money laundering.

Police think the group and other criminals are using crypto and shell companies to launder millions of USD worth of funds extorted from law-abiding citizens in protection racket schemes.

Earlier this month, the nation’s Superior Court granted judges the authority to seize crypto holdings from individuals in cases involving financial defaults.

South Korean authorities raid Bithumb in corporate fund misuse inquiry https://earlybirdsinvest.com/south-korean-authorities-raid-bithumb-in-corporate-fund-misuse-inquiry/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/south-korean-authorities-raid-bithumb-in-corporate-fund-misuse-inquiry/#respond Fri, 21 Mar 2025 02:36:11 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/south-korean-authorities-raid-bithumb-in-corporate-fund-misuse-inquiry/

South Korean prosecutors raided the headquarters of crypto exchange Bithumb on March 19 as part of an investigation into whether the company’s former CEO misused corporate funds to purchase an apartment, according to local media reports.

Authorities from the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office searched Bithumb’s Yeoksam-dong offices, looking into claims that the exchange provided a 3 billion won ($2.3 million) lease deposit to its former CEO and current advisor, Kim Dae-sik.

Investigators suspect that Kim used a portion of these funds to acquire a personal residence in Seoul’s Seongsu-dong district.

The timing of the investigation raises fresh concerns for Bithumb, which has been working toward a long-awaited initial public offering (IPO).

CEO Lee Jae-won recently reaffirmed the company’s intent to list on the stock market in 2025 and has made structural changes to minimize legal risks tied to key shareholders.

Funds repaid

The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), South Korea’s financial regulator, previously examined the case before transferring it to prosecutors.

Following the investigation, a Bithumb spokesperson acknowledged in an interview with The Chosun Daily that Kim had taken a loan from an external lender after the FSS investigation and later repaid the funds.

Despite the repayment, prosecutors are reviewing whether the original transaction violated financial regulations or corporate governance rules. The case has intensified scrutiny over Bithumb’s internal financial management as authorities continue to monitor the country’s crypto sector for potential misconduct.

It has also raised concerns about broader governance and financial practices within the exchange, which has faced repeated legal and regulatory scrutiny in recent years.

Listing allegations

The raid comes amid separate allegations that Bithumb and rival exchange Upbit facilitated token listings through intermediaries who allegedly charged projects hefty fees.

Researcher Wu Blockchain reported that some projects paid between $2 million and $10 million to secure listings on the exchanges. The allegations also suggest that certain intermediaries had ties to Upbit shareholders and market makers, with fees ranging from 3% to 5% of token supplies.

Upbit has denied the claims and demanded that Wu Blockchain provide a list of projects that allegedly paid brokerage fees, calling for evidence to support the accusations.
