While the fiat-backed stablecoin market surged over 76% from 2024 to 2025, adding more than $97 billion in value to reach a record $224.9 billion, not all entrants participated equally in the rally.

The overwhelming majority of growth came from USDT and USDC, which together account for 93.5% of the circulating supply. USDtb by Ethena and USD0 by Usual are also making strong debuts. The same cannot be said for traditional finance-backed stablecoins.

TradFi Misses the Mark

According to the latest report by CoinGecko, traditional finance-backed stablecoins like PayPal’s PYUSD and SocGen’s EURCV struggled to gain meaningful traction.

Despite brand recognition and regulatory alignment, both coins have seen limited adoption and utility in a market dominated by crypto-native incumbents.

Their underperformance pointed to the challenges TradFi institutions face in competing with established decentralized players. However, the door remains open for future entrants, particularly as the US edges closer to regulatory clarity.

Meanwhile, commodity-backed tokens experienced a 67.8% market cap increase during the same period, as this cohort added $773.9 million and reached a record $1.9 billion during a period of economic volatility. This growth closely mirrored the rally in gold prices, as investors turned to the metal as a hedge against mounting geopolitical and macroeconomic risks.

Despite this, the segment remains a minor player, and comprises just 0.8% of the total value of fiat-backed stablecoins. Even with strong tailwinds from gold, commodity-backed tokens expanded at a slower pace than their fiat counterparts.

Tether Gold (XAUT) and PAX Gold (PAXG) continue to lead, and collectively make up 84% of the category’s total market cap. Interestingly, this surge in market value did not coincide with an increase in token issuance, indicating that the demand for tokenized commodities stayed relatively flat and was largely influenced by asset appreciation rather than increased adoption or new users entering the space.

Tokenized Treasuries See Breakout Year

Beyond stablecoins and tokenized commodities, another corner of the real-world asset space saw even more explosive growth. In April 2025, the tokenized treasury market hit an all-time high, with a total market cap of $5.6 billion. This is a 544.8% increase from the previous year, which makes it the strongest-performing RWA class during the period.

A major catalyst for this growth occurred in March 2025, when the US introduced sweeping trade tariffs, which fueled investor flight to safer assets. Between March and April alone, tokenized treasuries added $2.3 billion in value, up 67.1%. BlackRock’s BUIDL token, launched in July 2024, quickly became the category leader and accounted for 44% of the total market by April.

The product saw explosive growth in 2025, as it rose by more than 372% to end April with $2.5 billion in tokenized treasuries. While these digital assets are now issued across several blockchain networks, Ethereum remains dominant, with Stellar in second place. Despite rapid expansion, overall user participation is still relatively narrow, as tokenized treasuries are distributed across just over 11,000 individual on-chain addresses.

PayPal's PYUSD Gets a Green Light as SEC Closes Investigation https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypals-pyusd-gets-a-green-light-as-sec-closes-investigation/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypals-pyusd-gets-a-green-light-as-sec-closes-investigation/#respond Tue, 06 May 2025 07:44:08 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypals-pyusd-gets-a-green-light-as-sec-closes-investigation/

PayPal has confirmed that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially ended its investigation into PayPal USD (PYUSD), the company’s dollar-backed stablecoin, without taking any enforcement action.

In a filing published on April 29, PayPal shared that the SEC told the company in February that the case was being closed.

This follows a subpoena PayPal received from the SEC’s Division of Enforcement back in November 2023, which requested documents related to the stablecoin. At the time, the company said it was cooperating with the agency.

PYUSD was introduced in August 2023 as a stablecoin that is fully backed by short-term US Treasury bills, cash, and similar assets. It is designed to be redeemable at a 1:1 ratio with the US dollar. However, the token has faced challenges growing its presence in a market already led by competitors like Tether

and Circle.

At the time of writing, PYUSD holds a market cap of around $880 million, which is a small share compared to Tether’s $148.5 billion. Even so, the stablecoin has seen some growth in 2025. Its circulating supply has risen by 75% since the beginning of the year.

To help attract more users, PayPal announced a new rewards feature on April 23. US-based customers can earn a 3.7% annual return for holding PYUSD in their PayPal accounts.

PayPal To Begin Offering Yield on PYUSD To Boost Stablecoin Use: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypal-to-begin-offering-yield-on-pyusd-to-boost-stablecoin-use-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypal-to-begin-offering-yield-on-pyusd-to-boost-stablecoin-use-report/#respond Thu, 24 Apr 2025 05:57:48 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paypal-to-begin-offering-yield-on-pyusd-to-boost-stablecoin-use-report/

Payments giant PayPal is reportedly going to start offering customers yield on its proprietary stablecoin product.

According to a new report by Bloomberg, PayPay is planning on offering rewards to users of their stablecoin PayPal USD (PYUSD) as a means of increasing its usage.

The report says that the program is expected to launch sometime during the summer, though no specific date was mentioned, and would allow users of both PayPal and Venmo to earn 3.7% annually on PYUSD holdings in their crypto wallets.

The rewards – which accrue on a daily basis and get paid out monthly – will be paid in PYUSD which customers can then either convert to fiat currency, use for payments, or send to other users.

Jose Fernandez da Ponte, PayPal’s senior vice president and general manager of blockchain, crypto and digital currencies, told Bloomberg in an interview that the goal of the company is to incentivize use of stablecoins as a form of payment on its platform.

“We see stablecoins as building the next generation of payment rails but we are aware that is something that takes time. We are halfway [through] a 10-year journey.”

PYUSD launched in 2023 in collaboration with stablecoins issuer Paxos, which says that the token’s reserves are 100% held in US dollar deposits that are available for 1:1 redemption.

US financial giants Bank of America look to enter stablecoin market as PayPal advances PYUSD https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-financial-giants-bank-of-america-look-to-enter-stablecoin-market-as-paypal-advances-pyusd/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-financial-giants-bank-of-america-look-to-enter-stablecoin-market-as-paypal-advances-pyusd/#respond Wed, 26 Feb 2025 16:35:55 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-financial-giants-bank-of-america-look-to-enter-stablecoin-market-as-paypal-advances-pyusd/

Traditional financial giants Bank of America and PayPal are making bold moves in the stablecoin sector, signaling the rising institutional interest in the sector, which is worth over $200 billion.

On Feb. 26, reports emerged that the Bank of America would introduce a stablecoin once the US regulatory landscape became apparent.

At the same time, PayPal revealed that it was working to expand the role of its PYUSD stablecoin within its payment ecosystem.

Bank of America’s stablecoin ambitions

Brian Moynihan, President of Bank of America, has hinted at the bank’s potential entry into the stablecoin market.

He acknowledged that stablecoins function similarly to money market funds or bank accounts with check access. According to Moynihan, regulatory approval remains the primary barrier to launching a USD-pegged stablecoin.

He reportedly said:

“If they make that legal, we will go into that business.”

His statement reflects the bank’s readiness to enter the sector once regulations permit. He also suggested that a future “BofA coin” could be tied to dollar deposit accounts, though he questioned its broader utility.

Moynihan’s statement is unsurprising, considering he had previously said that the US banking industry would embrace cryptocurrencies for payments if regulators allow it.

Bank of America is the second-largest bank in the United States, with total assets of $2.57 trillion.

PayPal’s PYUSD expansion

On the other hand, PayPal is actively working to integrate PYUSD into its payment ecosystem to boost its adoption.

Michelle Gill, a PayPal executive, detailed plans to embed the stablecoin deeper into its platform by enabling merchants to use PYUSD for vendor payments through PayPal’s network.

Beyond that, the company would also focus on incorporating PYUSD for international payments.

The executive explained that PayPal aims to eliminate currency conversion complexities and reduce transaction delays that plague the traditional system by integrating PYUSD into its cross-border payment system.

According to Gill:

“A lot of the payments we’re expecting are going to be cross-border because merchants in the US are seeking to pay vendors and suppliers abroad. The thesis was: Can we facilitate that on PYUSD rails so as not to have the currency conversion, the friction, as well as time?”
