Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko pressed his government to introduce tougher regulation for the crypto industry, local media reported on Sept. 5.

According to the report, Lukashenko warned that lax oversight was undermining investor security and the state’s economic interests.

The President delivered the rebuke during a high-level government conference after a state audit found that about half of all citizen investments sent to foreign crypto platforms fail to return.

The inspection, carried out by the State Control Committee, also uncovered violations in how domestic platforms register financial operations.

Push for regulatory overhaul

The President said he had ordered a comprehensive framework for digital tokens and crypto as far back as 2023, but no binding legislation has reached his desk until now. The country has also initiated plans to create a central bank digital currency tied to the Russian ruble.

He criticized the government for allowing “digital life” to outpace the law, urging officials to finalize regulations that guarantee financial stability while protecting investors.

Currently, digital asset activity in Belarus falls under the Hi-Tech Park, a special economic zone governed by Ordinance No. 8. The framework, introduced to foster the country’s IT sector, sets the legal foundation for token creation and trading.

Lukashenko acknowledged the framework but said it was insufficient and signalled that traditional state agencies would soon play a larger role in the sector’s oversight.

Balancing security and investment

The measures Lukashenko outlined focus on creating transparent rules for market participants, including safeguards that ensure funds remain within the country.

At the same time, he stressed the importance of allowing legitimate local businesses and foreign investors to continue operating in what he called Belarus’ “digital haven.”

The government has not yet released a timetable for when new regulations will be enacted, but Lukashenko’s ultimatum indicates that the crypto industry in Belarus is likely to face a sharp increase in state scrutiny in the months ahead.

TL;DR

  • Google has launched a new device protection program called Pixel Care Plus.
  • Pixel Care Plus offers new benefits like $0 screen and battery repairs, $0 post-warranty malfunction claims, and more.
  • Current monthly subscribers of Google Preferred Care and Fi Device Protection will be migrated over to this new program in the coming months.

If you were worried about having an accident with your Pixel phone, Google offered an insurance program called Preferred Care to help protect your device. This service would allow you to have repairs done or receive replacements in the case of a mishap. We’re using the past tense here because Google has now replaced this program with a new one.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

Today, the Mountain View-based firm launched a new device protection program called Pixel Care Plus. This program is in partnership with Asurion, which diverges from Google’s former collaboration with Assurant for Preferred Care. In the announcement, Google claims that the new program offers “a higher level of coverage, service, and peace of mind for Google hardware owners.”

Along with the new program, Google is offering a few new benefits that include:

  • Unlimited claims for accidental damage, extended warranty claims, and mechanical damage
  • $0 screen and battery repairs
  • $0 post-warranty malfunction claims
  • Genuine Google parts and replacements
  • Priority Support from Pixel Experts
  • Self-service claims through the Google Store website
  • Optional added loss and theft coverage

The tech giant adds that Pixel Care Plus customers get free upgraded shipping on replacements (including next-day shipping). Customers will be able to file claims from the Google Store and select a location and time for the repair. Alternatively, you can also to submit a claim through the My Pixel app, formerly known as Pixel Tips.

As for the prices, Google offers a breakdown in the screenshot below. You can check out the prices for other eligible devices on the Pixel Care Plus website.

Pixel Care prices

There are some stipulations you should be aware of. Pixel owners will have 60 days after purchase to sign their device up for Pixel Care Plus. The device must also be one of the products that Google considers eligible. At the moment, that includes the Pixel 8 and up, the Pixel Watch 2 and up, the Pixel Tablet, the Fitbit Ace LTE, the Fitbit Versa 4, the Fitbit Sense 2, the Fitbit Charge 6, and the Fitbit Inspire 3. Last but not least, you’ll need to be in the US, but where you purchased your device won’t matter.

Just like submitting claims, you’ll be able to add a device to the program from the Google Store or through the My Pixel app. For those of you who are current monthly subscribers of Google Preferred Care and Fi Device Protection, Google says you’ll be migrated over to this new program in the coming months.

‘The fear is real’: How to protect your devices and digital life from U.S. border agents https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-fear-is-real-how-to-protect-your-devices-and-digital-life-from-u-s-border-agents/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-fear-is-real-how-to-protect-your-devices-and-digital-life-from-u-s-border-agents/#respond Wed, 23 Jul 2025 12:20:48 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-fear-is-real-how-to-protect-your-devices-and-digital-life-from-u-s-border-agents/

This is Part Two of our three-part post on how U.S. citizens and green-card holders can protect themselves at the border, in which we interviewed deputy director of ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, Nathan Freed Wessler.

In Part One, we covered the rights of U.S. citizens reentering the country, including advice on what to do if U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents decide to interrogate. In this second part, we dive into what border agents are legally allowed — and not allowed — do with your phone and laptop. We also discuss how to protect your data, and why a burner Chromebook might not be such a crazy idea after all.

“The fear is real,” Wessler warned us. But he said the risk is higher for some citizens over others. Read on to determine how far you, as an American or green-card holder, might want to go in protecting yourself and your digital privacy before your next international trip.

Let’s talk about your devices. If CBP [Customs and Border Protection] wants to search your phone or computer, and you’re a U.S. citizen, do they have the right to do so?

Wessler: They claim the right to do that. Of course, if you’re inside the country, the basic rule is that when the government wants to search your private things or private space, they need to go to a judge first, demonstrate probable cause, and get a warrant.

At the border, the government can search your stuff — no warrant requirement, not even a requirement of individualized suspicion. The government takes the position that cell phones and laptops are just like suitcases, and they should have exactly the same latitude to search them. They can do it to everybody. They can do it because it’s a Tuesday. They can do it because they’re picking all gray-haired travelers today, whatever it is.

What do they actually do when they search your phone or laptop?

Wessler: The government distinguishes between two different kinds of searches: what they call basic searches and what they call advanced searches.

10 red flags a crypto platform is a scam—and how to protect your money https://earlybirdsinvest.com/10-red-flags-a-crypto-platform-is-a-scam-and-how-to-protect-your-money/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/10-red-flags-a-crypto-platform-is-a-scam-and-how-to-protect-your-money/#respond Sun, 15 Jun 2025 12:14:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/10-red-flags-a-crypto-platform-is-a-scam-and-how-to-protect-your-money/

Key takeaways

  • Fake crypto investment platforms give themselves away in a few obvious ways.

  • Many use fake reviews, incorrect contact information and unrealistic promises to lure you in.

  • The best approach is a healthy dose of skepticism. Watching for these red flags will keep you safe while investing.

The burgeoning cryptocurrency market, with its lack of centralized authority and a constant flow of inexperienced users, makes digital assets a prime target for scammers. Fake crypto investment platforms are a common scam method, masquerading as useful services for crypto traders.

Before signing up for any crypto investment platform, it’s essential to learn the telltale signs of a scam.

This article will detail what to watch out for and how to verify if a crypto investment platform is legitimate. These tips will teach you how to avoid crypto scams.

Did you know? The FTC hosts a crypto scam detection guide that allows you to view common crypto scams, sorted by company name, scam type and other keywords.

How to spot a crypto scam

Here are 10 crypto investment scam red flags to watch for when choosing a cryptocurrency investment platform.

1. Promising unrealistic returns

  • What to watch for: Fake crypto investment platforms will try to entice you with unrealistic promises, like “Make 1 Bitcoin in just a few days!” A legitimate crypto exchange won’t need to sell you with fake deals.

  • How to verify: The platform’s services should speak for themselves. None of them will give you a special advantage over the other, especially not one that can net you a Bitcoin just days after signing up. This is one of those prime crypto scam warning signs.

2. Fake team members

  • What to watch for: It’s easy to make an “our team” page on any website, let alone one offering a decentralized service. At a minimum, these pages should include photos, descriptions and links to LinkedIn or other verified social media platforms.

  • How to verify: Double-check team pages for legitimacy. Some scammers might also set up fake social media pages, so scan those for authentic interactions and delve deep into each team member’s project history.

3. Inconsistent white paper

  • What to watch for: Let’s be honest, most scammers won’t expect customers to read their project white paper. It’s probably something they threw together in ChatGPT or even plagiarized from a legitimate project.

  • How to verify: Read a project’s white paper in-depth and watch for legitimate use cases. Make sure the project solves a real problem, has a legitimate purpose and a realistic plan for the future. Don’t fall for buzzwords!

A caution about white paper

Did you know? Justin Sun, founder of Tron’s long-standing blockchain platform, has been accused of plagiarizing Ethereum’s white paper.

4. False endorsements

  • What to watch for: Just as it’s super easy to fabricate an “our team” page, scammers can place fake endorsements all over their home page. It’s as quick as copying and pasting a company logo like Forbes.

  • How to verify: Instead of trusting an exchange’s webpage, look up news releases and other proof of these supposed endorsements. Cointelegraph provides a directory of legit exchanges to help you identify fake crypto websites.

5. Lack of regulatory information

  • What to watch for: Now, regulatory requirements may vary depending on whether you’re looking at a centralized or decentralized platform, but if you’re looking at the former, know that centralized platforms cannot operate without regulatory approval from your government.

  • How to verify: Typically, you can check a government database to confirm if a platform is licensed. If it’s not, it may not be trustworthy. For example, the CEO of Tether (USDT) refuses to comply with the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. The company is known for its resistance to comply with regulatory policies, causing industry-wide suspicion.

6. Pushy sales tactics

  • What to watch for: Pushy sales tactics are a big red flag. If a platform reaches out to you through social media, such as through a direct message on X, Discord or Telegram, you can be sure it’s a scam. Scammers might claim to be an employee or crypto influencer ready to provide you with an “exclusive offer” or “limited time deal.”

  • How to verify: A real exchange would never reach out to potential customers like this, especially via social media. Social media DMs are widespread crypto scam tactics.

Did you know? Some top crypto scams in 2024 were phishing attacks, rug pulls and fake airdrops.

7. Fake location/contact info

  • What to watch for: Crypto investment platforms with a real product, even decentralized ones, will have contact information. Even Uniswap has a support email with which to get in touch. Centralized entities should also have addresses of their offices, ones that you can cross-reference with Google Maps for legitimacy purposes.

  • How to verify: If a crypto investment platform is missing any contact information, consider that a red flag. This is an easy sign to miss.

8. Fake reviews

  • What to watch for: Tech products, blockchain-based and otherwise, feature user reviews front and center on their websites. That said, you can tell if these are real or manufactured. Keep an eye out for reviews with repetitive language and a lack of a critical eye, which only praise the platform. Glowing reviews are often fake, possibly even written by AI.

  • How to verify: Search for platform reviews on Reddit and other social media sites. Other users will tell you if the platform is legit or not. If a platform has no social media accounts, there is more reason to avoid it.

9. Fake airdrops or giveaways

  • What to watch for: Some fraudulent platforms may offer airdrops or giveaways as promotions to attract positive attention. However, participating in the fake airdrop might require inputting a wallet seed phrase or private key.

  • How to verify: Legitimate airdrops will be announced on social media platforms like X, the platform’s blog on Medium or its official website. They’ll only ask for your wallet address, nothing more.

Fake token airdrops look like this

3. No fiat offramping

  • What to watch for: A crypto exchange with no fiat offramping means it’s not registered with local financial institutions. The platform might demand that you only work in crypto.

  • How to verify: If you sign up for an exchange and it immediately asks you to send crypto into your wallet on the platform instead of linking a payment method like a bank or card, this is a big red flag.

Cryptocurrency investment scams thrive on urging you to make rash decisions. It’s always best to be skeptical when choosing where to trade, invest or hold your crypto. Take your time, do your research, and double-check every piece of information a platform provides. These crypto fraud prevention tips will help keep you safe, protecting your assets and peace of mind. Use them to create a crypto scam checklist.

This article does not contain investment advice or recommendations. Every investment and trading move involves risk, and readers should conduct their own research when making a decision.

How do you protect Bitcoin from quantum computers? I’m not kidding https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-do-you-protect-bitcoin-from-quantum-computers-im-not-kidding/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-do-you-protect-bitcoin-from-quantum-computers-im-not-kidding/#respond Fri, 18 Apr 2025 11:11:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-do-you-protect-bitcoin-from-quantum-computers-im-not-kidding/
Shinobu

Recently, Project Eleven (Quantum Computing Research Group) announced 1 Bitcoin reward for the first team that can complete a challenge to destroy the ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptograph) key using Shor’s algorithm on quantum computers.

The deadline for this assignment is April 5, 2026. In other words, in order to qualify for the award, the team must demonstrate that they will break the important pairs that must be made before that deadline.

This is, frankly, a completely absurd and meaningless award for a number of reasons. The first reason is that the deadline is just under a year from today. Even very optimistic predictions about quantum computing progress have put a timeline that effectively achieves such goals, like five to ten years. Even if you consider Quantum Computing a material threat in the short term, expecting a viable proof of concept that actually breaks Keypair in one year is pretty hilarious at face value.

Next is the factors that contribute to economic incentives. Currently, a single Bitcoin is worth around $80,000. That’s frankly not much money in a grand plan of things. Especially when it comes to the application of cutting-edge technologies such as quantum computing, which allow the entire class of classes to be executed exponentially than classical computers. Imagine how valuable you can do with a work quantum computer.

Regardless of TLS, you can eavesdrop on your internet connection, destroy secure connections to your banks, break stock brokers, and private company networks that do not use post-Quantum encryption. It can break all private messenger applications on the planet and decrypt PGP encrypted messages sent via email knowing the public key. It can break the entire hierarchy of certificate authority in a DNS system, and impersonate the server in the world that users are trying to connect to.

All of these are immeasurable worth more than just $84,000. Will some people publicly reveal the fact that people using Quantum Computer claim a single bitcoin when they have access to all the other things they can do?

Now, let’s put all these possibilities aside and pretend that aside Bitcoin, the whole world magically moves to post-Quantum encryption. that still If you have a functional quantum computer, it doesn’t make sense to try and publicly request this award.

Let’s assume you have a quantum computer that is barely capable of performing well. I think it takes quite a while to crack a single key. How many bare public keys are there to protect 50 BTC outputs from the first mining epoch? Thousands of them. Why the hell do you break it, then tell everyone to publicly assert it Single Bitcoin? You will try to crack as many early Coinbase rewards as possible before people detect you.

Finally, in itself, the timetable is just ridiculous. Nowadays, quantum computers can’t even consider primes that people can mentally make in their own heads. In a year, will the technology then break the bitcoin key? That’s ridiculous.

So, except for a few publicity stunts, what is the point of this award? No matter how worried or indifferent you may be about the time frame of quantum computers as a threat, it makes no sense at all as a serious bounty to serve as a canary in our coal mine.

This bounty is a joke.

Bitcoin developers propose hard forks to protect BTC from quantum computing threats https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-developers-propose-hard-forks-to-protect-btc-from-quantum-computing-threats/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-developers-propose-hard-forks-to-protect-btc-from-quantum-computing-threats/#respond Sun, 06 Apr 2025 03:59:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-developers-propose-hard-forks-to-protect-btc-from-quantum-computing-threats/

Bitcoin could head towards the most drastic crypto overhaul if the new proposal gains traction.

Draft of the title Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) Quantum-resistant address migration protocol (QRAMP) was introduced by developer Agustin Cruz. This outlines the plan to implement a network-wide migration of BTC from legacy wallets to those protected by post-Quantum encryption.

Quantum computing involves leaving processes that depend on binary code, zero, and zero by using qubits that exist simultaneously in multiple states (QUBITs). Such a force jump is expected to threaten modern computing encryption built by classic machines.

This suggests that after a pre-determined block height, nodes running the updated software reject transactions that attempt to use coins from addresses using ECDSA ciphers. This makes it theoretically vulnerable to quantum attacks.

Hard fork discussion

Bitcoin currently relies on algorithms including SHA-256 for mining and Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) for signatures. According to Cruz, legacy addresses that have not yet been traded are protected by additional layers, but public keys that have not yet been traded (they do not have to carry out transactions) have become vulnerable “if sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge.”

This move requires a hard fork. This could be a tall question from the community. A hard fork refers to a blockchain change that makes an older version incompatible.

“I admire this effort, but this leaves everyone who will not migrate migrant coins, including Satoshi’s coins,” one Reddit user said of the new proposal.

“Bitcoin can implement post-quantum security on every coin, but it requires a hard fork. This requires a hard fork because of the history of Bitcoin and the mantra that is repeated by Maxis, which creates new coins and is no longer Bitcoin.”

Preventive measures

The proposed solution sets a migration deadline to lock these funds unless you move to a safer wallet. This proposal is not a response to an imminent breakthrough in quantum computing. Instead, this is a precautionary measure, but a quantum processing unit designed to scale to 1 million kits per chip, just over a month after Microsoft announced the Majorana 1.

During the migration window, users are still free to move funds. BIP builds tools and warnings to help users follow wallet developers, block explorers and “other infrastructures.”

Continuing to accept legacy transactions after deadlines can cause unupgraded nodes to branch out of the network.

This is not the first time someone has proposed a mechanism to protect Bitcoin from the threat of quantum computing. Recently, BTQ, a startup working to build blockchain technology that can withstand attacks from quantum computers, has proposed an alternative to Proof of Work (POW) algorithms that include quantum technology.

In its research paper, BTQ proposed a method called coarse-grain boson sampling (CGB). This process uses light particles (bosons) to generate unique patterns (samples) that reflect the current state of the blockchain, rather than a hash-based mathematical puzzle.

However, this proposal also requires a hard fork that includes miners and nodes that replace existing ASIC-based hardware with Quantum-enabled infrastructure.

A new study finds the shingles vaccine can protect against dementia https://earlybirdsinvest.com/a-new-study-finds-the-shingles-vaccine-can-protect-against-dementia/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/a-new-study-finds-the-shingles-vaccine-can-protect-against-dementia/#respond Sat, 05 Apr 2025 14:07:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/a-new-study-finds-the-shingles-vaccine-can-protect-against-dementia/

Anyone who has watched a loved one descend into the fog of dementia knows the tremendous toll that neurodegenerative diseases of aging can exact.

Dementia currently afflicts over 55 million people worldwide; in the US, more than 6 million people — about 1 out of 10 of those 65 years or older — live with dementia. The economic cost of treating and the often uncompensated cost of caring for those sufferers is now more than $600 billion a year. As our population ages, that number will only grow, with one estimate projecting that the number of people with dementia will double by 2060. It is a fate that many of us will one day suffer — according to one recent study, adults over 55 have a nearly one in two chance of eventually developing dementia.

But this week delivered one of the brightest spots in an otherwise dark field. According to a study that followed more than 280,000 people in Wales, older adults who received a vaccine against shingles were 20 percent less likely to develop dementia in the seven years that followed vaccination than those who did not receive the vaccine.

This could be a big deal. There are very few, if any, treatments that can prevent or slow down dementia, beyond good lifestyle habits like getting enough sleep and exercise. The possibility that a known, inexpensive vaccine could offer real protection is enormously meaningful. We have good reason to be confident in the findings: While this study is perhaps the most prominent to show the protective effects of the shingles vaccine, other studies of the vaccine have come to similar conclusions.

Beyond the promise of preventive treatment, the new study adds further evidence to a growing body of research raising the possibility that we have been thinking about neurodegenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s all wrong. It’s possible these horrible conditions are caused by a virus — and if that’s the case, eliminating the virus could be enough to prevent or treat the diseases.

To understand why the new shingles vaccine study is such a big deal, it helps to know a little bit about how medical studies are carried out.

The gold standard for research is a randomized control trial (RCT). That’s when scientists randomly assign patients to two different groups — one that receives an experimental treatment and another that doesn’t — in order to test the effectiveness of a treatment or intervention. Such RCT trials minimize bias or other complicating factors, allowing scientists to be reasonably confident that any differences between the two groups — like the likelihood of developing a disease — are due to the treatment being studied.

In the real world, RCTs are often difficult and expensive to carry out. For one thing, you need a large sample size to be confident of your results, and the control group can’t receive the treatment being studied, which creates ethical issues.

So a lot of big medical research involves observational studies, which is a fancy term for scientists observing things happening in the real world and drawing conclusions from their research. The upside is you don’t need to go through the time and trouble of gathering a big study group and randomly dividing them in two. The downside is you’re much less certain that any observed effect is due to the variables you’re studying because you don’t control the study; you just observe it,

The new study, though, took advantage of a quirk in Welsh health policy to do something better. Beginning on September 1, 2013, anyone in Wales who was 79 became eligible to receive a free shingles vaccine. (Those who were younger than 79 would become eligible once they turned that age.) But anyone who was 80 or older was not eligible on the grounds that the vaccine is less effective for the very old.

The result was what is known as a “natural experiment.” In effect, Wales had created two groups that were essentially the same — save for the fact that one group received the shingles vaccine and one group did not.

The researchers looked at the health records of the more than 280,000 adults who were 71 to 88 years old at the start of the vaccination program and did not have dementia. They focused on a group that was just on the dividing line: those who turned 80 just before September 1, 2013, and thus were eligible for the vaccine, and those born just after that date, who weren’t. Then, they simply looked at what happened to them.

By 2020, seven years after the vaccination program began, about one in eight older adults, who by that time were 86 and 87, had developed dementia. But the group that had received the shingles vaccine were 20 percent less likely to be diagnosed with the disease. Because the researchers could find no other confounding factors that might explain the difference — like years of education or other vaccines or health conditions like diabetes — they were confident the shingles vaccine was the difference maker.

A new paradigm in dementia research?

As Paul Harrison, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Oxford who was not involved in the study, told the New York Times, the research indicates that the shingles vaccine appears to have “some of the strongest potential protective effects against dementia that we know of that are potentially usable in practice.”

But this is a vaccine originally designed to prevent shingles. Why does it also appear to help with dementia?

Scientists theorize it could be related to inflammation. Shingles, or herpes zoster, is caused by the same virus responsible for chickenpox, which lies dormant in nerve cells after an initial infection and can reawaken decades later, causing painful rashes.

That reactivation creates intense inflammation around nerve cells, and chronic inflammation is increasingly recognized as a major factor in cognitive deterioration. By preventing shingles, the vaccine could indirectly protect against the neural inflammation associated with dementia.

What about the amyloid and tau protein plaques that tend to be found in the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer’s, which have long been thought of as the primary cause of the disease? It’s possible that these may actually be the body’s response to an underlying infection. That could help explain why treatments that directly target those plaques have been largely ineffective — because they weren’t targeting the real causes.

As promising as the new research is, we’re still a long way from finding a silver bullet against Alzheimer’s and dementia. One double-blinded RCT — the gold standard of the gold standard in medicine — that is underway now is examining whether valacyclovir, an antiviral used against the virus that causes shingles, could slow cognitive decline in people with early-stage Alzheimer’s. That would be a true game changer.

Google retires Nest Protect, launches new partner smart home devices https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-retires-nest-protect-launches-new-partner-smart-home-devices/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-retires-nest-protect-launches-new-partner-smart-home-devices/#respond Fri, 28 Mar 2025 16:03:06 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-retires-nest-protect-launches-new-partner-smart-home-devices/
Nest protect device on wall

TL;DR

  • Google is officially retiring the 2013 Nest Protect smart smoke and CO2 alarm.
  • A similar product from First Alert is launching in its place, with full support in the Google Home app and interoperability with the Nest Protect.
  • Google is also co-launching a new smart lock from Yale to replace the Nest x Yale Lock from 2018.

Way back in October 2013, a young company called Nest Labs launched the Nest Protect, one of the first smart smoke/CO2 alarms to enter the burgeoning smart home market. Only a few months later, Google had swept in and bought Nest for $3.2 billion. Unbelievably, since then, not much has changed: Google still makes the Nest Protect ($99 at Amazon) and has only moderately increased its price over the past 12 years.

Today, however, the company is finally sending the Nest Protect off to pasture. Starting now, production of the Nest Protect will cease, and Google will sell through all remaining stock.

Instead of producing its own replacement for the Nest Protect, Google is looking to a partner to fill the gap. First Alert — owned by a company called Resideo — is co-launching with Google the new First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm. Although a different firm makes it, the First Alert device is basically a Nest Protect 2 in that it integrates with existing Nest Protects and fully supports the Google Home app. In other words, if you have multiple Nest Protects throughout your house and one of them fails, you can just swap in one of these new First Alert alarms, and it will perform in pretty much the same fashion.

In fact, this new device even looks a lot like the Nest Protect, as you can see in the official image below:

First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm

The First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm will go on sale in the United States and Canada “in the coming months” for a projected price of $129, the same price as the original Nest Protect. You can pre-order it now at First Alert’s site.

If you’re worried that this news means any Nest Protects you own will become paperweights, don’t worry. Google is still committed to offering security updates to all Nest Protect devices through their individual expiration dates.

A similar story for the Nest x Yale Lock, which is also being discontinued

Yale Smart Lock with Matter 2025

It was never an official Made by Google product, but the 2018 Nest x Yale Lock was clearly developed in partnership with Google and Nest. The smart lock integrated smoothly with the Google Home platform and remains, to this day, the only smart lock with the Nest branding.

Unfortunately, this lock is also being retired today. As with the Nest Protect, Google and Yale will sell through the remaining stock of the device and cease to make any additional units.

Like the Nest Protect, Google and Yale will continue to support the Nest x Yale Lock with security updates. Additionally, Google will even integrate passcode management support and other new features with the Google Home app, making it still an excellent investment (or worth holding onto if you already have one).

To replace the Nest x Yale Lock, Yale is launching a smart lock called the Yale Smart Lock with Matter, which you can see in the image above. This will be the next-best thing to replace the Nest x Yale Lock.

Yale tells us this new smart lock will seamlessly integrate with the Google Home ecosystem — including Nest doorbells — along with general Matter-certified devices. It supports multiple entry methods, including passcode, app triggering, or even a conventional key. The lock will be available in three finishes (Ash, Matte Black, and Snow) and will cost $170. It will be available “later this summer.”
