Remy St Felix, the man who led a group responsible for violent break-ins targeting crypto owners, is facing an extra seven years in prison after attacking someone who testified against him.

St Felix had already been sentenced to 47 years for organizing multiple home robberies where victims were tied up and threatened for access to their digital assets.

According to a press release from federal authorities, the assault took place at a detention center in North Carolina on October 8, 2024.

Despite the witness being restrained with handcuffs and leg chains, St Felix repeatedly punched him in the head, face, and body. During the attack, he blamed the man for the long sentence he had received and called him a “rat”.

Officials also reported that St Felix later bragged about the incident in phone calls with his girlfriend and mother.

On May 6, 2025, St Felix admitted guilt to one charge of retaliating against a witness. Of the new seven-year sentence, three years will run at the same time as his earlier term. This means his time in prison has been extended by nearly four years.

St Felix had initially been found guilty of nine offenses, including kidnapping and using a gun while committing violent crimes. He and thirteen others were accused of targeting people they believed held valuable cryptocurrency. Together, the group stole roughly $3.5 million worth of crypto assets.

The court also ordered St Felix to repay $524,000 to account for the value of the stolen funds linked to his actions.

Tomas Jirikovsky, the creator of the darknet site Sheep Marketplace, was recently detained in the Czech Republic. What happened? Read the full story.

Do Kwon, co-founder of Terraform Labs, has admitted to committing two crimes in the United States.

In a court appearance on August 12 in New York, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud and wire fraud.

According to a report from Inner City Press, Kwon told the judge that between 2018 and 2022, he took part in a plan to mislead people who bought cryptocurrencies from Terraform Labs.

He admitted making false claims about how a stablecoin’s price peg was restored and about the involvement of another company. He also confirmed that he worked with others to carry out this plan and knew it was against the law.

As part of his deal with prosecutors, Kwon will pay $19 million in financial penalties. While the two charges could lead to a maximum prison term of 25 years if sentences run one after the other, prosecutors agreed not to ask for more than 12 years.

His sentencing is scheduled for December 11. Judge Paul A. Engelmayer made it clear that the final decision on the sentence is his alone.

On August 5, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reached a settlement with Huynh Tran Quang Duy, the founder of the now-closed lending platform MyConstant. What did the agency say? Read the full story.

Mastermind Behind $13,000,000 Crypto Ponzi Scheme Faces 15 Years in Prison After Defrauding Investors – DOJ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/mastermind-behind-13000000-crypto-ponzi-scheme-faces-15-years-in-prison-after-defrauding-investors-doj/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/mastermind-behind-13000000-crypto-ponzi-scheme-faces-15-years-in-prison-after-defrauding-investors-doj/#respond Wed, 30 Jul 2025 19:29:35 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/mastermind-behind-13000000-crypto-ponzi-scheme-faces-15-years-in-prison-after-defrauding-investors-doj/

An Arizona man who masterminded a $13 million crypto Ponzi scheme pleaded guilty this week to money laundering and conspiracy to obstruct justice charges.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) says Vincent Anthony Mazzotta Jr., 54, schemed with his co-defendant David Saffron and others to fraudulently promise investors high-yield profits from crypto investments that pretended to rely on automated trading robots powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

Mazzotta Jr. lured investors by convincing them to sink money into multiple crypto investment companies. When those companies disappeared with the investors’ capital, he went one step further and created a fake government entity called the Federal Crypto Reserve (FCR), which solicited thousands of additional dollars from victims by pretending to investigate those same firms.

The DOJ says Mazzotta Jr. also obstructed justice after Saffron’s initial arrest by destroying evidence at his co-defendant’s apartment, and he attempted to falsify the records of his business, Runway Beauty Inc., to hide his participation in the fraud from a federal grand jury.

Bill Essayli, US Attorney for the Central District of California, warns that criminals like to use the “relative novelty” of crypto assets to prey on victims.

Mazzotta Jr. faces a maximum of 10 years in prison on the money laundering charge and five years for conspiring to obstruct justice.

An accountant and adjunct business instructor from Scranton, Pennsylvania, is sentenced to federal prison for her involvement in a multi-state business email compromise scheme.

In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa says that 63-year-old Margo Ann Williams laundered $800,000 of proceeds from a scheme that was carried out between December 2022 and July 2023.

According to evidence presented at the trial, the email accounts of the five victims – a Cedar Rapids church, two businesses, a non-profit and an individual – were hacked while they were in the process of making large wire and automatic clearinghouse (ACH) transfers.

The victims received spoofed emails containing instructions to change the routing information for the wire and ACH transfers. Believing that the emails were from legitimate and trusted sources, the victims instructed their banks to wire the funds according to the supposed new payment instructions.

The funds were rerouted to bank accounts that Williams controlled.

She subsequently relocated the funds to other bank accounts under her control before transferring the money to two crypto exchanges and another person in Florida.

The banks discovered William’s fraudulent activities and closed her accounts, but she kept opening new ones at other banks in an effort to keep the scheme alive. She earned approximately $25,000 from the operation and spent the funds on many personal purchases, including an Apple watch and a luxury bag.

Williams, who claimed that she perpetrated the scheme at the direction of a famous British actor with whom she became romantically involved, was sentenced to four years in prison. She’s also ordered to pay $594,037 in restitution to her victims and must also serve a three-year term of supervised release following her imprisonment.

One physician in California has skipped town after manipulating the Medicare system to defraud the government of nearly $1.5 million.

According to a new Department of Justice (DOJ) press release, 61-year-old Medicare provider Lilit Gagikovna Baltaian of Porter Ranch, CA, has been sentenced, in absentia, to four-and-a-half years in prison for healthcare fraud.

The DOJ says the fugitive issued false certifications in Los Angeles from 2012 to 2018, costing the government $1.497 million.

“From approximately January 2012 to July 2018, she falsely certified patients to receive home health care from at least four Los Angeles area home health agencies. These certifications were used by the home health agencies to fraudulently bill Medicare.

In some instances, Baltaian pre-signed blank, undated physician certification forms knowing that the home health agencies would falsify the forms to make appear that she had seen the Medicare beneficiaries and made clinical findings to support the need for home health care, when she had done neither. Baltaian received cash payments related to these referrals and also separately billed Medicare for signing the fraudulent certifications.”

Though Baltaian pleaded guilty to a count of healthcare fraud in November of last year, the physician fraudster has since disappeared, presumably on the run from the law.

Goldman Sachs Banker Sentenced to Prison for Role in $4,500,000,000 Ransack of Malaysia’s State Investment Fund: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/goldman-sachs-banker-sentenced-to-prison-for-role-in-4500000000-ransack-of-malaysias-state-investment-fund-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/goldman-sachs-banker-sentenced-to-prison-for-role-in-4500000000-ransack-of-malaysias-state-investment-fund-report/#respond Mon, 02 Jun 2025 11:35:53 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/goldman-sachs-banker-sentenced-to-prison-for-role-in-4500000000-ransack-of-malaysias-state-investment-fund-report/

An ex-Goldman Sachs banker is reportedly being sentenced to prison for his role in the massive $4.5 billion theft of the Malaysian State Investment Fund (1MBD).

According to a new report by NBC News, former Goldman Sachs employee Tim Leissner has been sentenced to two years behind bars for paying a part in the multibillion-dollar heist.

Prosecutors say that Leissner and others who worked for the banking giant aided Malaysia in raising $6.5 billion for the nation’s investment fund through bond sales. However, $4.5 billion of those funds were stolen, laundered via bribes and kickbacks, and used to purchase luxury goods and fund extravagant lifestyles.

The report says the scandal was far-reaching and led to the downfall of then-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2018, who was later convicted of crimes connected to the scheme and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Leissner is due to report to prison on September 15th. He pleaded guilty in 2018 to bribing officials in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi.

Says Leissner,

“The funds raised more than a decade ago could have profoundly benefited the nation and its citizens. Instead, due to my greed – and the greed of those involved alongside me – they were misappropriated.

What we did was unequivocally wrong, and I take full responsibility for my role. I deeply regret my actions, and if I could turn back time, I would undo them without hesitation.”

Leissner’s sentence includes two years of supervised release after prison and a forfeiture of nearly $44 million.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his release, Ulbricht described the shift from prison life to modern society as overwhelming.

His release followed a presidential pardon signed by President Donald Trump in January 2025, which ended a sentence of two life terms plus forty years in prison.

Ulbricht spoke about how the crypto community supported him during his time in prison. He recalled receiving letters, donations, and words of encouragement. “You didn’t abandon me. You didn’t forget me”, he said.

He described his return to everyday life as confusing. The rise of new technologies, such as drones, artificial intelligence (AI), and virtual reality, surprised him. “I effectively went into a time capsule in 2013”, he said.

As the speech continued, Ulbricht focused on the importance of staying true to the values that originally defined Bitcoin. He named three principles that should remain fundamental to the crypto industry: freedom, decentralization, and unity.

Ulbricht ended by urging the community not to turn on itself. He said, “Have each other’s backs, as you had mine. Freedom, decentralization, unity—stay true to these, and the future is ours”.

Crypto czar David Sacks, who also spoke at the Bitcoin 2025 conference, shared his thoughts on the US government’s Bitcoin holdings on May 27. What did he say? Read the full story.

On May 13, two former leaders of Cred, a collapsed crypto lending firm, admitted to committing wire fraud, according to plea deals accepted by a federal judge in California.

Daniel Schatt, who was the company’s CEO, and Joseph Podulka, its chief financial officer, pleaded guilty as part of a deal with prosecutors.

The court set their sentencing for August 26. Wire fraud charges can lead to up to 20 years in prison and fines of $250,000 per person, or $500,000 if charged to a business. Prosecutors have suggested prison terms of up to six years for Schatt and just over five years for Podulka.

In the plea deal, Schatt and Podulka admitted they had only shared positive updates with customers while hiding information about serious problems at the company. When the firm eventually went bankrupt, customers lost a combined total estimated between $65 million and $150 million.

At the time of its bankruptcy, Cred said it owed customers about $150 million. However, by May 2024, the US Department of Justice noted that the remaining assets tied to the company had increased in value and were now worth more than $780 million.

Prosecutors also said that Cred gave investors the wrong idea about how their money was being handled. Much of its lending activity relied on MoKredit, a Chinese firm that gave small, unsecured loans to gamers.

On May 9, German authorities took down the cryptocurrency exchange eXch and seized approximately $38 million worth of digital assets. What happened? Read the full story.

Jan 2024 SEC’s X account hacker got 14 months in prison for cyber fraud https://earlybirdsinvest.com/jan-2024-secs-x-account-hacker-got-14-months-in-prison-for-cyber-fraud/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/jan-2024-secs-x-account-hacker-got-14-months-in-prison-for-cyber-fraud/#respond Sun, 18 May 2025 08:09:00 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/jan-2024-secs-x-account-hacker-got-14-months-in-prison-for-cyber-fraud/

Eric Council Jr. was sentenced to 14 months’ imprisonment for his role in the Jan. 9, 2024, hack of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC’s) X account. The convicted, along with co-conspirators, posted false news of the SEC approving the first Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund in the U.S.

In a press release on May 16, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) stated that Council Jr. will also be subjected to three years of supervised release, a form of parole.

The 26-year-old from Huntsville, Alabama, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated identity theft and access device fraud in February. He was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents in October last year.

What Council Jr. did

On Aug. 29, 2023, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in Washington ruled that the SEC was wrong to reject Grayscale’s spot BTC ETF application without proper cause. The court’s decision meant that the SEC would review Grayscale’s application, which it had rejected several times.

The court win raised optimism, and the crypto industry was highly anticipating the SEC to approve the first spot Bitcoin ETF any day. Council Jr. and his accomplices took advantage of the market sentiment and announced a fake approval from the SEC’s genuine X account.

Court documents indicate that Council Jr. conspired to hack the SEC’s X official account and post fake news of spot BTC ETF approval to manipulate the price of BTC. His role was to carry out a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) swap, where a bad actor convinces the mobile carrier to port a victim’s phone number to a SIM card controlled by them.

According to the DOJ, Council Jr. used an ID card printer to produce fake IDs of victims, whose personal data was supplied to him by co-conspirators. He then used the fake IDs to gain access to the victim’s number to access the SEC’s X account and post the fake news. Council Jr. received payment in BTC for his role in the SEC’s X account hack.

The damage Council Jr. contributed to

Immediately after the posting of the fake news, the price of each BTC increased by more than $1,000. But after the SEC chair, Gary Gensler, acknowledged the hack and dismissed the message of hackers as fake, the BTC price crashed by over $2,000 per BTC, CryptoSlate data shows.

BTC price rose to $48,000 after the fake news was posted, but crashed to $45,000 after Gensler’s refutation. Around $50 billion was wiped off Bitcoin’s market capitalization in the 24 hours following the posting of the fake news. The price fluctuation also caused a total of $220 million in liquidations.

FBI Criminal Investigative Division Acting Assistant Director Darren Cox called hack “a calculated criminal act meant to deceive the public and manipulate financial markets.” He added:

“By spreading false information to influence the markets, Council [Jr.] attempted to erode public trust and exploit the financial system.”

Ex-Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Fraud https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-celsius-ceo-alex-mashinsky-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-for-fraud/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-celsius-ceo-alex-mashinsky-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-for-fraud/#respond Sat, 10 May 2025 02:33:30 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ex-celsius-ceo-alex-mashinsky-sentenced-to-12-years-in-prison-for-fraud/

Former Celsius Network CEO Alex Mashinsky was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison on Thursday.

The decision follows his December guilty plea to organizing a fraudulent scheme that misled investors and manipulated the market value of Celsius’s native token, CEL.

Sentencing Details

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York, announced Mashinsky’s prison term on May 8.

“The founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Celsius Network LLC and their affiliated entities was sentenced to 12 years for committing commodities fraud and securities fraud at Celsius,” read the press release.

U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl delivered the verdict in courtroom 14A of Manhattan’s Southern District courthouse. It comes nearly five months after the former crypto executive’s guilty plea, in which he admitted to exaggerating Celsius’s financial stability and promising investors unsustainable returns.

“Alexander Mashinsky targeted retail investors with promises that he would keep their ‘digital assets’ safer than a bank,” stated U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “In fact, he used those assets to place risky bets and to line his own pockets.”

During the court session, Mashinsky acknowledged his role in artificially boosting the price of CEL tokens while quietly selling tens of millions of dollars’ worth of his holdings. The accused also agreed to forfeit the proceeds from his illegal activities.

Prosecutors had pushed for a 20-year sentence, arguing that the ex-CEO remained “unrepentant” and emphasizing the widespread damage to the crypto lender’s customers. Federal authorities also said that Mashinsky made a profit of $48 million from the scheme.

Ultimately, the 59-year-old accepted sentencing guidelines of up to 30 years and waived his right to appeal any prison term within that range as part of his plea deal.

Multi-Billion Dollar Fraud Case

Mashinsky’s legal troubles began in 2023 when he was apprehended on charges of securities, commodities, and wire fraud. His arrest coincided with Celsius’s agreement to a $4.7 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), one of the largest in the agency’s history. However, the deal is still contingent on the firm returning customer assets.

In September 2023, former Celsius chief revenue officer Roni Cohen-Pavon admitted guilt in the same case and agreed to cooperate with authorities. This provided key insights into the company’s inner operations.

His testimony contributed to the broader case brought against Celsius and Mashinsky by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for the multi-billion-dollar fraud scheme.

Although the former executive initially denied the accusations, his guilty plea and Thursday’s sentencing conclude a case that exposed serious misconduct at one of the most high-profile crypto lending firms.
