Hedge funds have been aggressively shorting ether (ETH) during the recent uptick to $3,000 as they attempt to harvest a yield by carrying out a basis trade.

Hedge funds are shorting ether to the tune of $1.73 billion on the CME, a venue favored by institutional traders, according to data from the Block, which cites the CFTC. CME data also shows that ether leveraged net totals have skewed heavily to the short side, according to X account zerohedge.

A basis trade involves shorting an asset on one venue whilst simultaneously buying on another, remaining delta neutral in terms of price action. In this case, traders can secure around 9.5% per year by shorting ETH on the CME while buying spot ETFs, of which there is around $12 billion in assets under management.

Data from Coinglass shows that on Thursday alone there was a record $421 million worth of inflows to ether ETFs, a trend that has been ongoing since early May.

Those shorting ETH could secure an additional yield if they buy spot ETH and stake it for a further 3.5% per year. It’s worth noting that this option isn’t possible for spot ETF purchasers as custody is handled by the ETF provider.

Bitcoin

was a popular asset for traders carrying out the basis trade in 2024 but that yield collapsed in March, which temporarily stalled inflows and muted price action.

Best-Selling Author Ric Edelman Doubles Down on $500,000 Bitcoin (BTC) Price Target As ‘Smart’ Investors Pile In https://earlybirdsinvest.com/best-selling-author-ric-edelman-doubles-down-on-500000-bitcoin-btc-price-target-as-smart-investors-pile-in/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/best-selling-author-ric-edelman-doubles-down-on-500000-bitcoin-btc-price-target-as-smart-investors-pile-in/#respond Thu, 10 Jul 2025 07:13:30 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/best-selling-author-ric-edelman-doubles-down-on-500000-bitcoin-btc-price-target-as-smart-investors-pile-in/

Personal finance author and investor Ric Edelman is detailing a massively bullish Bitcoin (BTC) prediction.

In a new interview with Natalie Brunell, Edelman says he believes BTC will increase more than 350% from its current value in less than five years as Bitcoin adoption accelerates and savvy investors buy the dip.

“I don’t believe we’re ever going to see a 70% or 80% drawdown again. I wouldn’t say never to a 40% or even a 50% [dip], but there are now so many institutional investors and sovereign wealth funds and hedge funds and family offices … these are smart people, and when you see a significant drop of 20% or 30% they’re going to recognize the buying opportunity for what it is, and that will put a floor unlike we’ve ever seen before. So sure, we’re going to continue to see volatility, but as the asset class matures, that volatility gets less and less.”

Edelman predicts more and more investors will add at least a small percentage of BTC to their overall investment portfolio, sending send Bitcoin to $500,000 by 2030.

“I’m actually pretty conservative. A lot of other folks say $1 million by 2030. [Founder and executive chairman of software firm Strategy] Michael Saylor says $5 million. But not too many others share their math. I do pretty openly. I’ll tell you very quickly and easily how I get there. If you take a look at the world’s global assets, the total value of everything, the value of stocks, bonds, real estate, gold, oil, commodities, you name it, add up the total value of everything, it’s about $800 trillion.

Now if you take the owners of all that stuff, you own a little bit of it, I own a little bit of it, we all own a little bit, if all the owners of all that stuff allocate just 1% of their portfolio to Bitcoin that would be a flow of $8 trillion. That would put Bitcoin at $500,000, simple as that.”

Bitcoin is trading for $111,087 at time of writing, up 2% in the last 24 hours.

Bulls vs. Bears: Institutions Pile Up BTC But Price Doesn’t go up, Why? https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bulls-vs-bears-institutions-pile-up-btc-but-price-doesnt-go-up-why/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bulls-vs-bears-institutions-pile-up-btc-but-price-doesnt-go-up-why/#respond Mon, 07 Jul 2025 04:27:31 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bulls-vs-bears-institutions-pile-up-btc-but-price-doesnt-go-up-why/

Over the last thirty days, many institutions have been loading up their bitcoin (BTC) bags. However, these purchases have had no major impact on the price of the leading digital asset. This has sparked concerns among market participants.

Many are wondering why BTC has been stuck within a tight range since it hit an all-time high (ATH) in late May.

A recent report by the market intelligence firm CryptoQuant revealed the reason for the weak price momentum despite persistent institutional demand, which analysts say is currently not enough.

BTC Stalls Despite Institutional Demand

According to CryptoQuant, BTC purchases from U.S.-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and corporate treasuries belonging to firms like Strategy have declined this year compared to the period from November to December 2024.

ETF purchases have decreased from 86,000 BTC in early December to 71,000 BTC in mid-May, and are currently at 40,000 BTC. The trend represents a 53% decline over this period.

At the same time, Strategy’s acquisitions have also dropped from 171,000 BTC in December to 16,000 BTC currently. This shows a 90% plunge over the period.

Although institutional purchases and ETF flows have kept BTC above $100,000 for a while, further declines could slow price gains. This could be exacerbated by the fact that ETF and institutional buys represent a fraction of the overall BTC demand, which seems to be contracting.

At the market’s peak in December, ETF and institutional purchases represented 33% of total Bitcoin demand growth. These entities purchased no more than 257,000 BTC out of the total 771,000 BTC. This indicated that the Bitcoin market had a bigger and unobservable demand coming from other sources.

Overall Demand is Contracting

Currently, the overall demand for BTC is contracting, having declined by 895,000 BTC over the last 30 days. This metric needs to expand for a sustainable price rally to occur. However, the demand level from institutions right now is not enough to trigger that expansion.

CryptoQuant stated that Bitcoin’s annual growth chart reflects how ETF and institutional purchases account for only a portion of demand. Apparent demand has also contracted by 857,000 BTC, significantly offsetting the expansion of ETF and institutional demand (377,000 BTC and 371,000 BTC, respectively).

“The bottom line is that ETFs and MSTR’s Bitcoin purchase, while overall positive for Bitcoin price gains, are not sufficient to drive prices to fresh all-time highs,” the market intelligence firm added.
