The new proposal has been introduced in the French Parliament by RN lawmaker Aurélien Lopez-Liguori. His plan suggests installing Bitcoin mining equipment at locations run by Électricité de France (EDF), the state-owned energy company.

Lopez-Liguori noted that unused electricity should be put to use rather than wasted. He argued that turning extra energy into Bitcoin could bring practical benefits.

France produces a large amount of electricity through nuclear energy, and sometimes the supply exceeds demand. Rather than let this extra power go unused, RN sees Bitcoin mining as a possible solution.

However, Jean-Philippe Tanguy, who handles RN’s financial policies, stated that the party should continue to support a centralized financial system and warned that promoting independent digital currencies like Bitcoin may not align with RN’s goals.

We’ve got less than a day to go before Samsung executives take the stage at Unpacked to announce the company’s latest mobile tech. The past few months leading up to this launch have been jam-packed with leaks and rumors, giving us a very solid set of expectations when it comes to the new foldable phones and wearables we’re going to see introduced. But even at this incredibly late hour, new information is still emerging. Sometimes, though, it’s not the information you get, but the information that’s absent which ends up revealing the most.

Samsung’s long had a love affair with the stylus, and its S Pen found a home in Galaxy Note devices for years, before moving on to the Galaxy S Ultra family. And while the S Pen has also featured prominently on Galaxy Tab tablets, maybe its most surprising affiliation has been with the company’s foldables.

You might think that fragile foldable screens would be a non-starter when it comes to stylus support, but Samsung made it work. The biggest trade-off, really, was that we didn’t get a built-in spot to stow the stylus on Fold phones, and resorted to pairing the phone with stylus-friendly cases, instead, like you can see up top.

With this year’s Z Fold 7, however, we’ve been hearing for months rumors that Samsung could be planning something new for the S Pen. That’s included talk of new tracking technology that might result in a larger, powered stylus, as well as whispers of this new tech spilling over into the S26 Ultra. Really, though, it’s just been very confusing, and with S Pen rumors jumping all over the place, it’s been difficult to know what we should really expect.

Over on Blue Sky, prolific leaker Roland Quandt is dumping just an absurd amount of Samsung materials associated with this week’s launch, and that includes a healthy amount of Z Fold 7 content. From detailed spec sheets to high-level feature overviews, the resources paint an incredibly thorough picture of the Z Fold 7 and its hardware.

And there’s not a single mention of an S Pen.

With last year’s Z Fold 6, the S Pen received mention in Samsung’s launch announcement, with the company highlighting the phone’s “Sketch to image” AI functionality and showing off how the stylus complemented the foldable:

What does all this spell for the S Pen and the new Z Fold 7? We may not be able to say with any certainty ahead of Samsung’s announcement tomorrow, but we’ve got to say we’re certainly not feeling particularly optimistic about whatever the company is up to here.

The real question is, as they say, “Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency,” why do some people not consider “pen drives” (the physical device that stores public and private keys and manages coins on the blockchain) as “physical currency”?

For example, let’s say Bob gives Alice a pen drive containing one bitcoin. Alice trades her favorite programming book called “JavaScript” for one bitcoin included in her pen drive.

Update: February 12, 2025 (2:40 AM ET): There were several reports of magnetic accessories interfering with the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s S Pen. We tested this and can confirm interference on our own device.

Android Authority colleague Ryan Haines slapped a magnetic Peak Design wallet case on the back of his S25 Ultra. He found that the S Pen worked fine when it wasn’t overlapping with the wallet, but that drawing abruptly stopped when the S Pen overlapped the magnetic accessory.

Needless to say, you should definitely think twice about using magnetic accessories if you’re a frequent S Pen user.

In addition to these changes, it looks like magnetic accessories, such as cases and adapters, might be messing with the S Pen’s performance on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Reports about this issue also surfaced with the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and it looks like the problem has continued into the S25 Ultra. In fact, Samsung also acknowledged the interference between magnets and the S Pen, going as far back as the Galaxy Note 8! Obviously, the S Pen has evolved a lot since then but it looks like the latest one still doesn’t play well with magnets.

Android Central’s Andrew Myrick shared his personal experience with the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the interference issue while using a Fiberborne case. According to his report, the phone issued a pop-up warning stating: “Magnetic accessories can interfere with your S Pen: The magnets in accessories can interfere with the signals your S Pen sends to your phone. They may cause your S Pen to not write correctly or cause Air commands to occur unintentionally.”

The publication notes that the warning is a bit misleading because the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s S Pen does not support Air Commands. This isn’t true, though. The S Pen on the S25 Ultra does not support “Air Actions,” a feature that allows you to control your Galaxy device like a remote by simply waving your S Pen. However, it does support “Air Commands,” a menu with quick access to various S Pen features that appears when you remove the pen from its slot.

So, the pop-up is actually correct about Air Commands interference caused by magnetic accessories.

Nevertheless, Myrick also pointed out that when he used a MagSafe adapter with Samsung’s silicone case, the warning about S Pen interference didn’t appear. Perhaps the thickness of Samsung’s case and the distance between the magnets and the S Pen play a role in whether or not interference occurs.

What can you expect?

For now, if you’re planning to use magnetic accessories with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, you might want to monitor how they affect your S Pen experience. Last year, when people reported similar issues on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, case maker dbrand also acknowledged it and noted that its users “may observe a negligible reduction in S Pen accuracy when drawing directly over the magnetic array within a MagSafe-enabled case.”

“The amount of interference comes down to a number of factors that relate to both the magnets (strength, coating, thickness, diameter, etc.), as well as the case itself (how deeply the magnets are recessed, what materials are used in the case, etc.),” the company explained.

However, at the time, dbrand warned that magnetic interference with the S Pen can dramatically increase as soon as you add a MagSafe accessory into the mix. “For instance, when using the S Pen with a MagSafe charger attached, users can expect to encounter a large dead zone in the shape of the magnetic ring,” the company said. We’ll definitely have to test and see if this is still the case when you attach a MagSafe accessory to the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra stands out from the regular models thanks to its built-in S Pen. However, this version of the stylus takes a step backward. Samsung decided to drop Bluetooth connectivity and Air Command support, which means some of the cool features you might be used to are now missing. On top of that, we’ve learned that if you’re using magnetic accessories, they can mess with the S Pen’s performance.

Android Central’s Andrew Myrick shared an interesting tidbit about his experience with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. This isn’t exactly a new problem, though. In fact, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has been dealing with the same S Pen interference issue for over 10 months now. Since it first popped up, there have been plenty of reports from users noticing how magnetic accessories can throw off the stylus’ signal.

Interestingly, the S24 Ultra’s S Pen comes with Bluetooth and Air Command support—features that didn’t make the cut for the S25 Ultra.

Despite that difference, both phones show the exact same warning about magnetic accessories interfering with the S Pen. This makes you wonder: did Samsung just forget to tweak the warning message for the S25 Ultra, or was dropping Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) from the S Pen a last-minute change? Either way, it’s a bit of a head-scratcher.

Furthermore, Myrick noticed that when he slapped a MagSafe adapter onto Samsung’s silicone case, the warning message about S Pen interference never appeared. This hints that the thickness of the case—and how far the magnets are from the S Pen—plays a big role in whether interference happens.

We’ve reached out to Samsung to get their take on this and will keep you posted as soon as they get back to us.

So far, we haven’t been able to find any other S25 Ultra devices where this same issue has popped up. It seems like this might be a one-off situation, at least for now.
