The United States is sitting atop a fiscal precipice. With the total U.S. debt surpassing $37.43 trillion as of September 2025, the nation faces a historic reality. Nearly one-quarter of every tax dollar it collects is consumed by servicing the interest payments on its debt burden.

The relentless march of U.S. debt

According to monthly updates from both the U.S. Treasury and Joint Economic Committee, the national debt has soared to $37.43 trillion. This marks an increase of $2.09 trillion in just the past year.

The interest payments alone for FY2025 exceed $478 billion year-to-date, up 17% from last year, according to CNBC.

This expense is projected to account for about 23 cents of every dollar collected by the IRS in revenue. This is a staggering proportion that has risen sharply as global interest rates normalize following years of quantitative easing.

Tariffs: big numbers, small impact

Recent years have seen the U.S. government rack up record-breaking tariff revenues, especially after a suite of new import duties imposed under the Trump administration.

These tariffs are expected to bolster Treasury coffers and could reduce the national deficit by $4 trillion over a decade.

Yet even such windfalls barely dent the mountain of national U.S. debt, with rising interest costs outpacing tariff collection gains. The IMF cautions that “the scale of the increase in tariff revenue is highly uncertain,” while Eliant Capital posted:

“Despite tariff revenues, the deficit for July was $291B with the U.S. spending $630B and collecting $338B meaning 46¢ was borrowed for every $1 spent.”

US debt and tariffs

Nothing stops this train

Macro analyst Lyn Alden has popularized the “nothing stops this train” thesis, a phrase borrowed from pop culture but now synonymous with the U.S. debt dilemma.

Alden’s analysis argues that persistent deficits and relentless spending make for an era of fiscal dominance and that substantive fiscal reform is politically impossible. In her view, the relentless accrual of debt is structurally built into the system, and nothing but a paradigm shift (such as hard money) can break the cycle. Alden told Slate Sundays:

“Just structurally, it’s [U.S. debt] growing above target almost without any way to stop it.”

According to the Peterson Foundation, interest payments are now the third-largest spending category for the federal government. They surpass nearly every other program except Social Security and Medicare.

As a share of revenues, federal interest payments will rise to 18.4 percent by year’s end, a level not seen since the early 1990s.

As interest payments consume ever-larger shares of federal revenue and traditional remedies like tariffs and spending cuts prove insufficient, the conversation around “hard money” intensifies.

Bitcoin and other cryptos are increasingly viewed as store-of-value alternatives in an era of persistent monetary expansion.

As Alden’s thesis warns, nothing stops this train, and this realization is fueling renewed attention to hard money solutions like Bitcoin and gold.

Investors seek alternatives like Bitcoin and gold

Both gold and Bitcoin have seen strong demand as alternative stores of value amid fiscal concerns and inflationary pressure.

As of mid-September 2025, gold had reached an all-time high, trading at over $3,600 per ounce, up more than 41% year-over-year.

Some analysts expect gold’s rally to continue, projecting prices toward $3,800 by the end of the year as global liquidity concerns drive investors into safe havens.

Bitcoin, dubbed by many as “digital gold,” is trading around $115,000–$118,000 after rebounding from its September lows near $108,000.

While Bitcoin’s price action has been volatile, many analysts, including Lyn Alden, expect to see it to hit at least $150,000 by the end of this cycle.

As fiscal pressures mount, these alternatives are increasingly seen as key safeguards in diversified portfolios, in a time when U.S. debt is spinning out of control.

Reports say Webus International made a deal with Air China that could put its Wetour travel service in front of more than 60 million PhoenixMiles loyalty members. The plan may add XRP payments to Wetour’s overseas platform. But it’s not automatic. The change depends on future business steps and getting regulatory approval.

Access For 60 Million Members

Under the deal, Wetour will focus first on premium chauffeur and airport transfer services. PhoenixMiles members could get access to Wetour’s platform, which now shows XRP as a payment option and also accepts Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin.

Webus has also moved to use more altcoins. In June it filed with the SEC for a $300 million treasury reserve and said it plans to use the XRP Ledger for cross-border payments.

XRP: Real Use & Limits

Fans say the XRPL settles transactions in three to five seconds and fees are under one cent. Those features are why travel companies and loyalty programs might try the tech for vouchers, token rewards, and fast payments.

But XRP payment support doesn’t always mean people will use the token for daily purchases. Attorney Bill Morgan notes the cautious wording, but he thinks it shows real progress. He said, “For me, it shows adoption of XRP.”

XRPUSD now trading at $2.82. Chart: TradingView

Big Number Vs. Actual Use Case

Sixty million is a big headline. It gets attention. But access is not the same as active use. Many loyalty programs have members who rarely travel or never use partner services.

Wetour’s focus on higher-end transport and promo coupons means early use might only be by some members, not all 60 million. That can still matter. Pilot programs usually start small and grow if people use them.

Rules & Business Checks

The announcement says the integration depends on future business steps and regulatory sign-off. That matters now because payments and loyalty schemes touch local rules, cross-border compliance, and payment systems. A wide rollout will need those issues cleared, and it could take time.

This is a notable step for XRP in travel and loyalty programs, but it’s early and conditional. Webus’ earlier moves — the planned $300 million treasury and XRPL plans — make the idea more believable than a one-time press claim.

Strategic Impact on the Gaming and Web3 Sectors

GCL is strategically focused on the growing Asian gaming market, where Web3 adoption in esports and digital commerce is accelerating. Through KuCoin Pay, 2Game Digital hopes to offer an accessible on-ramp for gamers to explore blockchain-based commerce.

For KuCoin, the move aligns with its broader effort to normalize crypto transactions in mainstream industries. For 2Game Digital, it represents an attempt to explore how blockchain can enhance user interaction, loyalty, and commerce — without altering core gaming experiences.

Coinbase

$1.12B

developers Kevin Leffew and Lincoln Murr have introduced the x402 payments protocol, a tool designed to let artificial intelligence (AI) agents carry out transactions on Ethereum
ETH

$4,508.22

without any human assistance.

The protocol allows software to automatically receive a payment request, send a stablecoin transfer, and receive the result. It has already been published on Coinbase’s GitHub page.

Their work highlights a web feature called HTTP 402, a status code originally created to signal that a payment is required before content is delivered. Although rarely used in practice, Leffew and Murr noted that this standard can serve a new function on Ethereum.

By combining HTTP 402 with Ethereum Improvement Proposal 3009 (EIP-3009), which allows token transfers through signed messages, the x402 protocol enables agents to act on behalf of users without needing full access to private keys.

This makes it possible for bots to complete transactions with only permission to act, rather than full control of wallets.

This system could support a wide range of use cases. An autonomous vehicle, for example, could pay for tolls or fuel on its own. AI-based software could purchase access to online services or data. Even tasks like long-term file storage could be handled directly by machine agents using stablecoins.

Leffew and Murr also pointed out that Ethereum’s ability to support secure transactions, along with the availability of stablecoins, allows AI agents to follow rules, settle payments, and reduce the need for human oversight.

How tipping became an excuse to not pay workers https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-tipping-became-an-excuse-to-not-pay-workers/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-tipping-became-an-excuse-to-not-pay-workers/#respond Sun, 27 Jul 2025 18:23:19 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-tipping-became-an-excuse-to-not-pay-workers/

We’ve all been there. Maybe it’s when you grab a coffee in the morning or when you finish up a dinner out with friends. Maybe it’s when you least expect it, like at the merch table at a concert. You tap your card, only to be confronted with the dreaded tip screen. There’s a lot of talk about how much to tip and if you even should tip (more on that later), but why do we add gratuity in America in the first place?

Nina Mast has the answer. She’s an analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank in Washington, DC. The point of the tip is to make up the difference between the minimum wage and the tipped minimum wage. “The tipped minimum wage is the lower minimum wage that employers can pay tipped workers with the expectation that tips will bring their pay up to the regular minimum wage rate,” she says. “Under federal law, the tipped minimum wage is $2.13 an hour. So tipped workers need to earn an additional $5.12 in tips to bring them up to the federal minimum wage, which is $7.25 an hour.”

On this week’s episode of Explain It to Me, Vox’s weekly call-in podcast, we find out how this system began and why we still have it.

Below is an excerpt of our conversation with Mast, edited for length and clarity. You can listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get podcasts. If you’d like to submit a question, send an email to askvox@vox.com or call 1-800-618-8545.

Where does tipping in America come from in the first place?

Tipping goes back to the pre-Civil War times in the US. There were wealthy Americans who were vacationing in Europe, and they noticed this practice of tipping where if you had good service, you gave a small extra fee on top of what you paid.

Then, tipping started to fade as a practice in Europe but persisted in the US. We can tie that back to the abolition of slavery. Once slavery was abolished following the Civil War, workers who were formerly enslaved in agriculture and domestic service continued to do these same jobs, but employers didn’t want to pay them.

So instead of actually just paying them their wage, they suggested that the customer paid a small tip to Black workers for their services. That’s how tipping started proliferating across service sector jobs and became the predominant way that workers in these jobs were paid.

How did the restaurant industry start to do this?

It really goes back to the formation of the National Restaurant Association. From the very beginning, going back to the early 1920s, they united around a common goal of keeping labor costs low, essentially lobbying against any efforts to raise wages for tipped workers and to eliminate the tipped minimum wage.

It sounds like this whole policy is a direct legacy of trying to keep Black people from getting the same minimum wage as other workers. When were service sectors included in the national minimum wage?

It wasn’t until the mid-1960s that tipped workers got the same rights as other workers under changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act. In the mid-1960s — this is during the civil rights movement, a few years after the March on Washington, which called for stronger minimum wage protections — amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act established a wage floor for tipped workers. It also increased protections for workers in agriculture, schools, laundries, nursing homes — a lot of sectors in which Black people were disproportionately employed and in which workers of color are still overrepresented even today. This was a big deal. Something like a third of the Black population gained protections under the Fair Labor Standards Act through these amendments in 1966.

Even after these amendments, the FLSA continued to exclude farm workers from overtime protections, and domestic workers didn’t gain rights until the 1970s. It was a significant change, and a big deal, for tipped workers to be covered, but there was a huge catch in the amendment. It established a lower minimum wage that tipped workers could be paid through the creation of the tip credit system. And that’s still what is in use today. This tip credit essentially allowed employers to count the tips that were received by their staff against half of the minimum wage that they were required to pay.

In 1996, the FLSA was amended again to raise the minimum wage federally from $4.25 to $5.15. Essentially, that froze the tipped minimum wage at $2.13 an hour, while the non-tipped minimum wage continued to go up. The tipped minimum wage has been stuck at $2.13 an hour since 1991, even though the federal minimum wage has been increased multiple times. And that’s still the situation we’re in now.

Why hasn’t this changed? It seems like it would be easier to give everyone the same minimum wage, and you wouldn’t have to worry about tipping.

I think that’s in large part due to the lobbying and advocacy efforts of the National Restaurant Association, its affiliates — groups like the US Chamber of Commerce — and other employer groups that have fought tirelessly to prevent the minimum wage from being raised, both for tipped workers and for other workers.

There is a proposal in Congress to raise the minimum wage to $17 an hour by 2030, and it would completely phase out this tipped minimum wage so tipped workers would receive the same minimum wage as everyone else.

Some states have already eliminated the tipped minimum wage, but a lot more states haven’t been able to do so yet. In most states, the minimum wage for tipped workers is still less than $4 an hour.

How does the tip credit system work in practice?

Employers are legally required to make up the difference if workers aren’t receiving enough in tips to get them up to the regular minimum wage. But in practice, it’s extremely difficult to enforce that rule. It’s largely left up to the workers themselves to track their hours, their tips, and make some complicated calculations about what they’re actually earning per hour per week.

Then they have to confront their employer if it seems like they’re not actually receiving the minimum wage, which obviously introduces a whole host of issues related to power dynamics. Not only is it difficult to calculate and keep track of, but it’s also difficult for workers to demand what they’re owed.

As a result, it’s largely not enforced. Workers who are already earning much lower wages than workers in non-tipped occupations are highly at risk of wage theft.

I think as consumers, we’re initially taught that tips are a way to reward good service. How should we think about tipping?

I think this is a big misconception. People don’t realize that they’re actually paying the lion’s share of their server’s wages through their tips. Unfortunately, when you fail to tip your server, you’re actually denying them their wage. We don’t have the luxury in the US of having the system that you describe where you can pay a tip for particularly good service or pay a smaller tip to indicate that you didn’t get good service.

How much do you typically tip?

I tip 20 percent as a standard, and sometimes, for a really good service, I’ll tip more. I think that’s basically the standard at this point in the US. It does get tricky, because we’ve seen a proliferation of tipping across lots of different transactions where a service wasn’t necessarily rendered.

I think customers are increasingly frustrated by that, especially as the costs of things have gone up. But I hope customers target their frustration not at tipped workers but towards the employers and the lobbying groups that have fought for decades to preserve and expand the system. When you’re tipping, remember that you’re actually paying your server’s wage, and that’s a problem that we need to be solving by putting the onus on employers to pay their workers.

JPMorgan Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo say they’ve lost $5.361 billion from customers who can no longer pay their debt.

In their Q2 2025 earnings reports, the three major banks disclosed billions of dollars in losses from “net charge-offs” — loans written off as uncollectible after all efforts to recover payments proved unsuccessful.

Among the trio, JPMorgan Chase reported the highest level of charge-offs at $2.4 billion, predominantly driven by bad credit card debt.

Meanwhile, Citi wiped $2.234 billion in bad loans off its books, including $1.889 billion tied to its retail credit card portfolio.

And Wells Fargo recorded $977 million in net charge-offs, fueled by $818 million in sour loans from its consumer banking and lending segment.

The figures come as fresh data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shows that US credit card balances reached $1.18 trillion by the end of March 2025.

Despite the losses, Citi reported a $225 million decline in net credit losses quarter-over-quarter, and Wells Fargo saw a $12 million decrease in net charge-offs over the same period. However, JPMorgan witnessed an increase of at $179 million in net charge-offs over the three-month period.

Additionally, the three banks reported strong earnings in Q2, with JPMorgan, Citi and Wells Fargo generating $15 billion, $4 billion and $5.5 billion in net income, respectively.

Merrill Lynch will have to shell out nearly $3.7 million in damages and other costs after arbitrators sided against the wealth management firm following a private equity complaint.

Two customers, Qun He and Haihui Zhang, filed a complaint against Merrill, Bank of America’s wealth management division, in late 2023, alleging the firm violated securities laws, industry standards and its fiduciary duty.

The complainants also alleged the firm acted with negligence and negligent supervision and breached its contract related to various unspecified securities. Merrill Lynch denied the allegations.

The U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) made an independent arbitration forum available, and a public panel of arbitrators decided Merrill Lynch should pay the claimants $2.73 million in compensatory damages, $2,002 in costs and $954,634 in attorneys’ fees.

Michael Bixby, a Florida attorney who represented the two customers, tells AdvisorHub that a broker recommended investments in illiquid proprietary feeder funds sold by Merrill. Bixby says that the feeder funds pooled capital into private equity investments overseen by institutional investors such as Apollo Global Management, KKR and Blackstone.

The lawyer says the recommended funds were advertised as having potential annual returns of 15% to 20%, but ended up recording annual returns around 3% after subtracting private equity fees and administrative charges from Merrill.

“We’re pleased with the result, and we think it reflects the arbitrator’s decision that Merrill was responsible for misconduct and held them accountable.”

Shareholders push back against high pay for public Bitcoin miner execs after record equity grants https://earlybirdsinvest.com/shareholders-push-back-against-high-pay-for-public-bitcoin-miner-execs-after-record-equity-grants/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/shareholders-push-back-against-high-pay-for-public-bitcoin-miner-execs-after-record-equity-grants/#respond Fri, 11 Jul 2025 08:09:12 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/shareholders-push-back-against-high-pay-for-public-bitcoin-miner-execs-after-record-equity-grants/

Shareholders trimmed support for executive pay packages at leading US Bitcoin (BTC) miners to an average of 64% in this year’s proxy season, far below the over 90% approval norm across the S&P 500, according to a July 10 VanEck research note.

VanEck reviewed filings from eight listed miners and found average named-executive-officer (NEO) compensation climbed from $6.6 million in 2023 to $14.4 million in draft 2024 proxies.

Equity and other long-term instruments accounted for 79% of total pay in 2023 and 89% in 2024, well above the Russell 3000’s 63% and the energy sector’s 63% weighting.

Base salaries remained near industry norms at roughly $474,000, but equity grants increased significantly.

Riot Platforms’ CEO secured a $79.3 million 2024 stock award, nearly double Marathon’s $40.1 million grant and multiple times the peer averages. Meanwhile, Core Scientific (CORZ), which was emerging from bankruptcy, issued its CEO $39.5 million in stock as part of remuneration.

Say-on-pay votes show mounting resistance

CORZ, Riot, and Marathon (MARA) failed their 2025 advisory votes on compensation, garnering approval rates of only 38%, 32%, and 22%, respectively.

Industry-wide, six in eight companies missed the 70% support threshold that proxy adviser ISS flags as “low support,” a failure rate of 75% versus about 4% for the Russell 3000.

Investors also scrutinised dilution. Equity plan expansions equal to roughly 10% of the shares outstanding were approved at Terawulf and CORZ, while smaller increases were approved at Bit Digital, Hut 8, and MARA. Analysts warned that generous share reserves amplify insider dilution when awards vest on short timelines.

Gradual shift toward performance gating

Six of the eight miners now use performance stock units (PSUs) that vest on multi-year share price or total shareholder return targets, up from two in 2022. However, CleanSpark has yet to adopt PSUs, and Bit Digital has authorization but no issuance.

VanEck noted that most plans still rely on two to three-year vesting horizons and “as-achieved” equity, leaving alignment gaps with long-term value creation.

Comparing 2024 NEO pay with market cap gains shows stark dispersion: Riot’s $230 million aggregate NEO compensation equalled 73% of its market-cap increase, while Marathon’s 18% ratio and Core Scientific’s 2% ratio reflected better alignment.

VanEck concluded that boards can temper push-back by tying bonuses to cost-per-coin-mined to enforce operating discipline, linking long-term equity to return-on-capital metrics instead of absolute share-price targets, and extending vesting schedules and capping awards to curb dilution.
