Lancashire police are set to receive around $665,000 after selling Bitcoin that was taken during a theft case from several years ago, according to an August 4 report.

The case began in December 2017, when officers looked into reports of stolen money.

The investigation showed that the stolen funds had been turned into Bitcoin

By the time the authorities froze the wallets holding the Bitcoin, its value had gone up sharply. This increase made it possible for the victim to be fully repaid. However, under UK law, compensation cannot be more than the original amount lost.

After the Bitcoin was sold and the victim reimbursed, about £1 million (roughly $1.3 million) remained. The police force will receive half of this surplus, £500,000, while the other half will go to the UK government.

This extra money will be added to a fund used for projects that aim to reduce crime. Past uses of the fund have included buying drones, paying for technology that blocks spam calls, and supporting local efforts to deal with antisocial behavior.

Detective Sergeant David Wainwright from Lancashire’s Economic Crime Unit said:

This is a great result for the people of Lancashire, and hopefully the first of many future uses of this new legislation.

Meanwhile, the US Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has issued a warning about the growing use of crypto kiosks in scams. What did it say? Read the full story.

Trump’s Meme Coin Nets Exchanges $172 Million—But Most Traders Took a Hit https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-meme-coin-nets-exchanges-172-million-but-most-traders-took-a-hit/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-meme-coin-nets-exchanges-172-million-but-most-traders-took-a-hit/#respond Mon, 14 Jul 2025 19:22:04 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/trumps-meme-coin-nets-exchanges-172-million-but-most-traders-took-a-hit/

The Official Trump (TRUMP), a meme coin linked to US President Donald Trump, has brought in large profits for several crypto platforms, according to a report from Reuters.

The TRUMP token has helped 10 major exchanges earn a total of $172 million in trading fees. These platforms include Binance

$15.14B

, Coinbase

$4.23B

, OKX

$4.5B

, Bitget

$6.01B

MEXC.

Even though 80% of the meme coin’s supply is controlled by the Trump family and their partners, many exchanges listed it quickly. In most cases, such concentrated ownership is seen as a warning sign, but it did not stop the listings this time.

On average, the TRUMP token appeared on platforms within four days, compared to 129 days for the others. Coinbase was the fastest, as it reportedly made the decision to list the coin in just one day.

Paul Grewal, the chief legal officer at Coinbase, said they believed people could use the token “positively and safely”. However, Coinbase labeled the meme coin as experimental and warned that it could be risky, with its price potentially fluctuating.

While a few made huge profits, most investors lost money. According to Reuters, just 45 wallets gained $1.2 billion from TRUMP trades. Meanwhile, more than 700,000 wallets have lost at least $4.3 billion collectively.

The US Department of Justice has recovered $40,300 in cryptocurrency that was stolen in a scam involving a fake Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee email.

On December 24, 2024, a donor received an email that appeared to come from Steve Witkoff, the committee’s co-chair, according to the Department of Justice’s press release on July 2.

The message used a nearly identical domain name to the real one, which swapped the letter “i” for a lowercase “l” in “t47lnaugural.com”.

The victim transferred $250,300 in USDT, and the scammers immediately moved the funds through multiple crypto wallets to make it harder to trace.

Investigators at the FBI’s Washington Field Office used blockchain analysis to follow the trail of transactions. They were able to locate and recover $40,300 of the stolen funds. Prosecutors have filed a civil forfeiture case to return the recovered amount to the victim.

Steven Jensen of the FBI stated, “Impersonation scams take many forms and cost Americans billions in losses each year”. He advised the public to carefully verify email addresses and never send money or crypto to individuals they do not know personally.

He added that scammers often rely on small details, including minor changes in email addresses or domains, to trick victims into believing fraudulent messages are legitimate.

On June 18, the Department of Justice seized $225 million in crypto linked to scams that misled over 400 people into fake investment schemes. How? Read the full story.

One of the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) given out at the TRUMP meme coin dinner has already been resold for about $16,000.

The NFTs were distributed after the event and included a mix of rarities based on the level of involvement each person had with the TRUMP token.

The most common, called “Power to the Holders”, was sent to 1,049 wallets. This included everyone who registered for the dinner, not just those who showed up.

The “Gold Gala Dinner” version was limited to 219 people who attended the event. The rarest of the group, “Diamond Hands,” went to 118 wallets belonging to people who kept their tokens throughout the entire event.

The official TRUMP meme coin account on X described these NFTs as items meant to mark the moment and recognize those involved.

Morten Christensen, founder of AirdropAlert, was one of the people who qualified for the dinner.

He bought a large amount of TRUMP tokens on the spot market but also shorted the same amount elsewhere to avoid price swings. He later sold his tokens before the dinner, which made him ineligible for the Diamond Hands NFT.

That decision might have cost him. A Diamond Hands NFT sold on June 2 for 99.9 SOL

BONK Bets Gain Favor as New Token Issuance Platform Nets $800K in 3 Days https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bonk-bets-gain-favor-as-new-token-issuance-platform-nets-800k-in-3-days/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bonk-bets-gain-favor-as-new-token-issuance-platform-nets-800k-in-3-days/#respond Tue, 29 Apr 2025 13:26:48 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bonk-bets-gain-favor-as-new-token-issuance-platform-nets-800k-in-3-days/

The dog-themed bonk inu (BONK) token on Solana could be one to watch for in the coming weeks as a new token issuance platform uses part of its fees to buy the token, with nearly $1 million generated in the first three days after launch.

Letsbonk.fun, built by members of the BONK community and Raydium, went live late Sunday as a Bonk-focused token issuance platform. A portion of fees will help secure and support the Solana network by using the BONKsol validator, per tweets, with over 10,000 tokens already issued.

As of Tuesday, the biggest tokens on Letsbonk.fun are HOSICO ($30 million market cap) and LETSBONK ($5.3 million market cap).

“I expect the platform’s success to surprise many,” well-followed X user theunipcs told CoinDesk in a Telegram message. The user is colloquially known as “bonk guy” for a viral trade that turned $16,000 into $20 million at peak on a BONK futures trade.

“LetsBONKfun takes a more innovative and simplified approach to memecoin launches, focusing on ensuring that users and the Solana blockchain/ecosystem can capture a good portion of the value it creates,” he added.

“Pump.fun, has made over $600 million in fees since it launched a little over one year ago. Imagine what even a fraction of this would mean for BONK just in terms of sheer buy pressure,” theunipcs said.

BONK tokens are up 54% in the past week, data shows, with a bulk of that move coming after Letsbonk’s launch on Sunday.

Various BONK-tracked futures show a spike in open interest — or the number of unsettled futures bets — with the largest jumping from Saturday’s $170 million to over $250 million as of Tuesday, showing a bump in expectations of further price volatility.

AAVE Whale Nets $1.8M Profit but Loses $10.9M to Market Timing Blunder https://earlybirdsinvest.com/aave-whale-nets-1-8m-profit-but-loses-10-9m-to-market-timing-blunder/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/aave-whale-nets-1-8m-profit-but-loses-10-9m-to-market-timing-blunder/#respond Thu, 20 Mar 2025 22:46:20 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/aave-whale-nets-1-8m-profit-but-loses-10-9m-to-market-timing-blunder/

In crypto trading, timing is everything and can be the difference between huge profits or disappointing losses. This was made quite clear recently when a crypto whale pocketed $1.8 million in profits from Aave (AAVE) trades but left a staggering $10.9 million on the table due to a poorly timed exit.

The whale, identified by the wallet address “0xfc0,” accumulated 43,885 AAVE tokens over three months before later selling them.

A Costly Mistake in Timing

Blockchain data shared by Spot on Chain shows that, between August 23 and November 27, the whale bought the tokens at an average price of $145.90 each. It means they spent about $6.4 million in the whole exercise, later staking the assets on Aave to earn rewards.

However, on March 20, the whale unstaked 44,765 AAVE and transferred them to Binance at $183.27 per token, earning $8.2 million and putting them $1.8 million in profit.

However, despite the 28% gain, the move cost the trader a much larger windfall. According to Spot on Chain, had they sold the stash at AAVE’s December highs, when one token changed hands for upwards of $380, they would have realized a $10.9 million windfall.

Meanwhile, another large investor recently moved 43,500 AAVE worth around $7.48 million to FalconX after being inactive for four months. On-chain data shows that this particular whale holds 67,426 coins valued at approximately $11.61 million, with total profits of $12.72 million, marking an 88.4% increase in the value of their investment.

AAVE Price Performance

Earlier in the month, AAVE’s value shot up 26% to $220 after the lending platform’s decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) announced a proposal to redistribute net excess revenue to the ecosystem’s key contributors.

However, the token has shed off much of the gains made at that time, with its current price standing at $177.91. While it is up 4.1% in the last 24 hours, it remains almost 30% lower than it was a month ago.

In addition, even though AAVE has climbed 4.2% in the last seven days, it has been underwhelming compared to the rest of the crypto market, which has gained 6% in that period.

Looking at exchange activity, Binance has led AAVE trading, handling more than 11% of its volume in the previous 24 hours, amounting to $44.27 million.

Compared to its all-time high of $661.69 achieved in May 2021, the asset is still 73.1% below its peak. In contrast, its price right now is a 583.4% improvement on its all-time low, set five years ago.
