Public companies that invest in cryptocurrencies are entering a more competitive phase, according to a report from Coinbase on September 10.

The period when firms could benefit just by holding digital assets appears to be over. Instead, companies need stronger strategies to stand out and attract investor interest.

In the report, Coinbase

$1.51B

researchers David Duong and Colin Basco explained that earlier adopters of crypto treasury strategies, like Strategy, once received high market valuations for holding large amounts of Bitcoin. However, those advantages have faded.

The researchers noted that success in this new phase will depend less on following past examples and more on how well a company can differentiate itself. Timing, operational choices, and differences from others will be key factors.

The report also touched on Bitcoin’s

performance in September. Between 2017 and 2022, Bitcoin experienced a decline during that month, which led some investors to believe it was a bad time to buy.

However, Duong and Basco noted that this pattern did not persist in 2023 or 2024.

Furthermore, the researchers expect the US Federal Reserve to lower interest rates soon, possibly at its next two meetings. Bitcoin, in particular, may benefit from current economic conditions, including ongoing inflation and liquidity.

Recently, Coinbase helped boost support for a UK petition that calls for stablecoin rules and blockchain pilot programs. How? Read the full story.

Google AI

Google plans to make it easier for users to access AI mode by allowing them to set it as the default, replacing the traditional blue links.

AI mode is an advanced version of Google Search that uses large language models to summarise information from the web, so you can spend more time on Google than visiting websites.

Google AI mode can answer complex answers, process images, summarize information on the web, create tables, graphs, charts, and even help you code.

Right now, AI mode is optional. It’s placed on the left of the “All” tab, so you can accidentally open Google AI search and slowly prefer it over the traditional search.

In a post on X, Logan Kilpatrick, who is the product lead at Google AI Studio, suggested that AI mode would soon become the default mode on Google.

Later, Google’s Robby Stein, VP, Product at Google Search, clarified that the company only plans to make it easier to access AI mode for those who wish to use it.

Right now, there are no plans to make AI mode the default for everyone, but if you prefer AI mode as your default search tab, there will be a toggle or a button to do that.

This would mean the traditional blue links will not appear by default, but you’ll be able to switch to old results by finding the “Web” tab, which is tucked at the very end of the bar.

AI Mode might become the default mode at some point in future, but when?

I wouldn’t be surprised if AI mode does become the default search page in 2026 for everyone.

Google is still trying to determine how a move like that would affect its ad business.

How Google plans to monetize AI results

Google is already testing ads in AI mode and AI Overviews and is pitching AI ad practices to ad partners.

The digital marketing industry is unsure how things will play out when blue links are replaced entirely with AI mode.

Google has about 90% of the search market share and continues to send billions of clicks to publishers across the world.

At the same time, Google does not pay publishers and independent blogs for summarising content.

Instead, the search engine giant claims that the AI summaries send more “quality” clicks to publishers, but it does not have data to back the claim.

Independent research by Pew suggests that fewer people are likely to click on a web result when the search engine shows an AI summary.

Some independent publishers are also discussing creating a “NATO for News” alliance to fight the existential crisis.

Notion’s offline mode might just make me ditch Obsidian https://earlybirdsinvest.com/notions-offline-mode-might-just-make-me-ditch-obsidian/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/notions-offline-mode-might-just-make-me-ditch-obsidian/#respond Mon, 25 Aug 2025 03:22:06 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/notions-offline-mode-might-just-make-me-ditch-obsidian/
Notion offline mode toggle

Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

Notion is one of my favorite tools. From databases to to-do lists, tracking restaurants I wanted to check out, and so much more, I’ve dabbled in it for years until I finally made the switch to Obsidian. That’s mostly because of Notion’s one fatal flaw. The moment you lose internet, the app effectively becomes useless.

The moment you lose internet, the app effectively becomes useless.

I’ve learned that the hard way on flights, cafes with rocky Wi-Fi, even when wanting to check a washing machine’s maintenance schedule in my basement laundry without a cellular signal. It’s what pushed me towards Obsidian, a local-first markdown-based app that has never failed me when I just needed access to my notes. For a very long time now, Obsidian has been my safety net. But now that Notion has finally fixed that fatal flaw by rolling out offline mode, it might be time for a rethink. Perhaps it’s time to ditch Obsidian and go back to Notion. Here’s why.

Are you team Notion or team something else?

Why offline mode makes such a big difference

Notion database

Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

For anyone who has used Notion long enough, the lack of offline access was not a minor inconvenience. It was effectively a dealbreaker. The whole app was designed around its well-defined structure and cloud-first experience. So when you lost access to the internet, you also lost the app’s utility. You could be staring at the prettiest dashboard in the world, but if you wanted to check your notes during a flight or in an area without a signal, it was effectively useless.

Obsidian’s local-first approach doesn’t care whether you have internet or not. It just works.

For me, that was the gap Obsidian stepped into so neatly. With its markdown-based files living on your local storage, it never mattered if the internet was on or off. I could take my laptop on a long-haul flight or my phone into a low-signal zone, and my notes were always there. Obviously, I couldn’t sync files across without the internet, but my work so far was right there and ready to be accessed. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been mid-thought on a flight and wanted to add something to my project tracker, only to stare at a blank Notion screen. Obsidian solved that, but at the cost of giving up Notion’s powerful databases, templates and collaboration tools. Now that Notion promises to work the same way anywhere, it feels like the balance is bridging the gap in the feature set. As someone who is frequently on the go, I needed that kind of reliability, and Obsidian has been the place where I keep anything important.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

Of course, Obsidian and Notion are very different in how they approach note-taking. Obsidian leans into extensibility with plugins for almost everything, and the fact that all notes are just simple markdown files means they’re as portable as it gets. But the app isn’t perfect. Even the simplest tasks can take just a bit too much time to accomplish.

The Obsidian app open on a black Android with a white paper planner underneath.

Nathan Drescher / Android Authority

Notion, on the other hand, is more polished and collaborative. Building a database takes only a couple of clicks. It quickly lets you link projects, create aesthetic and functional pages, share them to the internet with one click, and more. Features like Notion Forms are incredible for quick data entry on the go. Suffice it to say, Notion has always felt like the better tool for managing bigger projects, while Obsidian is more geared towards personal projects and research. For years I lived in both worlds, and though it was messy, it worked.

Notion’s offline mode update upends that. With the software’s latest release, I can now view, edit, and create notes without needing the internet. Everything syncs back once you reconnect, similar to Obsidian. On paper, that means I no longer need two separate tools. My use case is better served by Notion, and having access to offline mode means I should be able to ditch Obsidian. Well, as is always the case, the details matter, and Notion’s offline mode comes with plenty of quirks that you will want to watch out for.

Where Notion’s offline mode still falls short

capacities vs notion coffee tracking notion

Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

For starters, unlike Obsidian, Notion’s offline mode isn’t automatic. Any page that you want to access offline must be marked for offline use on each device you plan to use. If you forget to do that, you’re out of luck. Premium plans do ease things by automatically downloading recent and favorited pages, but it is still far from Obsidian’s always-available simplicity. And since most home and enthusiast users are on the free tier, they do not benefit from auto-downloading.

Notion’s offline mode feels more like a workaround than a seamless feature.

Then there are the limits. Databases are capped at 50 rows for offline access with no way to force a full download. If you have a complicated setup using multiple subpages, you’ll have to manually toggle each one for offline access. Subpages don’t automatically tag along when you mark a parent page offline. On top of that, embedded content, buttons, and forms stop working without a connection. None of these issues are dealbreakers individually, but together they make offline mode feel more like a workaround than a seamless feature. While I am glad the feature exists, it is clear that Notion was built from the ground up as a cloud-first tool.

Rethinking my workflow

notion on the phone

Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

Despite the many limitations of Notion’s offline mode, it is already making me rethink how I work. As I mentioned earlier, Notion comes across as the slicker tool due to its more defined schema of getting things done. Obsidian offers more freedom and has never let me down with offline access, but all too often you have to jump through hoops for simple tasks. Sometimes you even need to install third-party plugins for what should be basic functionality. That isn’t ideal for how I use apps.

With offline mode, Notion has finally earned back some of that trust. Offline mode is not perfect, but it no longer collapses the moment Wi-Fi drops. That is enough for me to consider shifting back.

Offline mode isn’t perfect, but it’s enough to make me consider Notion again.

At the same time, I don’t see myself deleting Obsidian any time soon. Markdown files stored locally are still unmatched for permanence. If something goes wrong, I know my notes are sitting on my hard drive, untouched by anyone else. That sense of ownership is hard to beat, especially for someone like me who is deeply entrenched in the self-hosted ecosystem. But the reality is that I don’t want to live in two worlds anymore. Splitting notes between apps adds friction I no longer need. If Notion can do enough for me day to day, then Obsidian starts to feel like a safety net I don’t need to check quite as often.

For now, I will probably integrate Notion more into my daily workflow while keeping critical access documents on Obsidian. I still need to see how well offline syncing holds up in real-world use. How well does Notion handle conflicts? Will Notion increase the database limit? These are questions that only long-term use can answer. But offline mode, even in its current form, is enough for me to seriously consider ditching Obsidian. And it might just be for you as well.

All Bitcoin Wallet Cohorts Now in Distribution Mode, Glassnode Data https://earlybirdsinvest.com/all-bitcoin-wallet-cohorts-now-in-distribution-mode-glassnode-data/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/all-bitcoin-wallet-cohorts-now-in-distribution-mode-glassnode-data/#respond Tue, 19 Aug 2025 10:56:58 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/all-bitcoin-wallet-cohorts-now-in-distribution-mode-glassnode-data/

Sentiment in the crypto industry can shift quickly.

According to Glassnode data, all bitcoin

wallet cohorts are currently in some form of distribution. The Accumulation Trend Score (ATS), broken down by wallet cohort, helps measure the relative strength of accumulation or distribution across entity sizes.

This metric evaluates accumulation strength by considering both the size of the entities and the amount of bitcoin acquired over the past 15 days.

  • A score closer to 1 indicates accumulation.
  • A score closer to 0 indicates distribution.
Exchanges, miners, and certain other entities are excluded from the calculation.

At present, from large holders with more than 10,000 BTC to small wallets holding less than 1 BTC, all cohorts appear to be in distribution. This marks a sharp reversal from just over a week ago, when all groups were in accumulation mode as bitcoin reached new all time highs above $124,000.

The current phase of distribution reflects profit taking. Historically, bitcoin tends to correct shortly after setting new record highs. The aggregate Accumulation Trend Score has printed 0.26, remaining below 0.5 for the past several days.

Bitcoin has posted four consecutive green months from April through July. However, August is often characterized by quieter trading activity and reduced volume. In fact, the last three Augusts each saw corrections in the double-digit percentage range.

Google’s AI Mode Changes the Search Game in the UK https://earlybirdsinvest.com/googles-ai-mode-changes-the-search-game-in-the-uk/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/googles-ai-mode-changes-the-search-game-in-the-uk/#respond Tue, 29 Jul 2025 20:55:46 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/googles-ai-mode-changes-the-search-game-in-the-uk/

Google has introduced a new feature in the United Kingdom that changes the way search results are shown, according to a July 28 press release.

Called “AI Mode”, the setting provides a single, written answer in a natural tone instead of the usual list of blue links. This response includes fewer direct links to websites and is meant to give a more complete summary based on the question asked.

This update does not replace the standard search format, which continues to handle billions of searches daily.

However, it has raised concerns among companies and publishers that rely on visitors coming through Google’s traditional search.

BBC reported that many businesses get traffic and income because their pages appear in the top results or because they have paid for ad space. With fewer visible links in artificial intelligence (AI) summaries, users may not click through to websites as often, which could hurt those who depend on that traffic.

Google has not decided yet how advertising will work in this new format. Hema Budaraju, who works on the search product team, said it is still too early to say whether businesses will be able to pay to appear in AI answers.

Additionally, Google said it created AI Mode in response to changing search habits. In the past, people might have searched for short phrases. Currently, users tend to type out full sentences.

On July 24, Elon Musk hinted on X that Vine, the short video app once owned by Twitter, might return with AI features. How did X users respond? Read the full story.

Bitcoin May Go Into Imminent Correction Mode for ‘Weeks and Weeks,’ According to Analyst Willy Woo – Here’s Why https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-may-go-into-imminent-correction-mode-for-weeks-and-weeks-according-to-analyst-willy-woo-heres-why/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-may-go-into-imminent-correction-mode-for-weeks-and-weeks-according-to-analyst-willy-woo-heres-why/#respond Sun, 01 Jun 2025 13:47:39 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-may-go-into-imminent-correction-mode-for-weeks-and-weeks-according-to-analyst-willy-woo-heres-why/

Veteran on-chain analyst Willy Woo says that Bitcoin (BTC) is on the edge of moving into a lengthy correction phase.

Woo tells his 1.2 million followers on the social media platform X that BTC has until Monday to avoid printing a bearish divergence on the weekly chart.

A bearish divergence happens when price makes higher highs, while an indicator like the relative strength index (RSI) makes lower highs, suggesting that an asset is losing bullish momentum.

Says Woo,

“Dear Mr Bitcoin, you have [until Monday] to rally or you’re gonna print a bearish divergence on weekly charts and then we will be bored for weeks and weeks.”

Image
Source: Willy Woo/X

Using proprietary data from his Bitcoin analysis firm, the Bitcoin Vector, Woo says that BTC appears to be strong, but may be “equalizing” itself after rallying faster than usual in previous months.

“Our Bitcoin Vector framework remains strong despite the pullback.

What’s happening is technical resistance in the form of a bearish divergence playing out against strong fundamentals. Basically, BTC ran up faster than normal and is equalizing.”

Image
Source: Willy Woo/X

While many traders are still betting on the traditional halving-based four-year cycles, Woo says BTC is becoming more linked to external macro forces, and that predictable, cyclical price patterns are now a thing of the past.

“BTC is global macro this cycle. Which means don’t necessarily bet on nicely manicured four-year cycles. BTC is transitioning.

Internal forces, the halvening, are getting weak, global liquidity powers BTC – hence BTC is becoming the canary in the coal mine for global macro moves.”

At time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $104,737

What you need to know

  • Assistant Driving Mode in Google Maps is officially gone for good, the company has confirmed.
  • Assistant Driving Mode is another feature casualty of the Gemini transition, which is currently underway.
  • The feature lost most of its functionality in February 2024, and only a media control bar and voice assistant button remained up until recently.

Google is officially removing Assistant Driving Mode from Android as part of the Gemini transition. The feature has undergone numerous changes since its introduction in 2019, most recently losing the app dashboard that was a crucial part of the Driving Mode experience. Now, it’s no longer available as part of the Google Maps app for Android, the company told 9to5Google.

As of February 2024, the app launcher that featured large, easy-to-touch icons while driving was removed. The most recent version of Assistant Driving Mode only offered a media playback bar and the a control button. It was mostly used by Android users that didn’t have a car with Android Auto functionality, since Driving Mode offered similar utility at one point.

In fact, Assistant Driving Mode was initially seen as a replacement and alternative to Android Auto for Phone Screens, was killed in 2021.

The Assistant Driving Mode app launcher was one of many Google Assistant feature removals announced in January 2024. “Using app launcher in Google Assistant driving mode on Google Maps to read and send messages, make calls, and control media,” the company explained in a support document at the time. “You can still use voice control on Google Maps the same way.”

Over a year later, not even the Assistant Driving Mode’s playback controls or voice control button are available as part of Google Maps. This is an intentional removal that is part of the Gemini transition, per the company. At this point, it means Assistant Driving Mode in Maps is gone for good.

The move is part of a larger transition from Google Assistant to Gemini that was announced officially in March 2025. It’s currently underway, and will see most mobile devices ditch Assistant in favor of Gemini in the near future.

Bitcoin is alive and kicking, spitting out an impressive hashrate count like never before.

Bitcoin’s network processing power reaches an unprecedented Zetahash (Zh/s) per second, marking a major milestone in the 16-year history of cryptocurrency.

Multiple blockchain tracking services confirmed achievement between April 4-5, 2023, but we disagree with the exact timing of when the thresholds cross.

Related readings

Various trackers report different dates for historic milestones

Zetahash (Zh/s) is a unit of computing power used to measure the hash rate of Bitcoin, reflecting the computing power used to protect the Bitcoin network through mining.

Bitcoin hashrate peaked at 1.025 ZH/s on April 5, according to data from Mempool.space. The BTC frame metric showed a slightly earlier breakthrough on April 4th at 1.02 ZH/s.

Meanwhile, Coinwarz reported an even higher peak of 1.1 Zh/s at Block Height 890,915 on April 4, but also suggested that on March 24, the network first hit the 1 Zh/s mark.

The difference comes from the way each service calculates the hashrate. Blockchain analyst Jameson Lopp previously pointed out that using one “trailing block” and five blocks for estimation could lead to a difference of more than 0.04 Zh/s.

Mitchell Askew, head analyst at Blockware Solutions, said seeing raw hashrate metrics can be deceived due to random variations in block time. He noted that Bitcoin’s 30-day moving average hashrate remains around 0.845 Zh/s.

Source: Mempoolspace

The network shows the greatest growth since 2016

This achievement represents the pronounced growth of the Bitcoin network. The current hashrate of 1 Zh/s equals 1,000 evash per second, indicating a 1,000-fold increase since late January 2016, when the network first reached 1 Eh/s.

To put this computational power into perspective, Bitcoin processes around 40,000 times more calculations per second than Litecoin, the second largest cryptocurrency network. Based on Coinwarz data, Litecoin currently runs at just 2.49 peta hash per second.

BTC is currently trading at $77,263. Chart: TradingView

Commercial mining operations promote hashrate growth

According to Askew, the surge in hashrates is consistent with increasing competition among commercial Bitcoin mining companies. Miners are doubling, expanding their sites and stuffing them with more efficient machines, he said. However, he warned that inefficient miners could struggle unless Bitcoin prices rise in the coming months.

Related readings

At least 24 publicly available companies operate Bitcoin mining equipment, according to Companiesmarketcap.com. Mara Holdings leads the pack with over 50 EH/s computing power. Other key contributors include Riot Platforms, Core Scientific, CleanSpark, Hut 8 Mining and Terawulf.

According to the hashrate index, the majority of the network’s hashrate flows through major mining pools, with Foundry USA and Antpools controlling the largest shares.

Record hashrates coincides with market slump

The network’s technical achievements occurred during a rapid market decline. Bitcoin price fell 8% in 24 hours to $77,210, but US stocks have experienced what analysts called their biggest two-day loss to date.
