According to prosecutors, the pair exploited a system used by MEV bots. These bots scan upcoming blockchain transactions and look for ways to make a profit, usually by getting ahead of other trades.

The indictment describes how the brothers planned and carried out a four-part strategy they called “bait, block, search, and propagation”. They allegedly used this process to trick the bots, delay other transactions, and transfer money in their favor.

The brothers set up 16 Ethereum validator accounts using over 500 ETH. These validators gave them more control over the transaction order and helped them complete the entire operation in just 12 seconds.

Anton and James argued that what they did was allowed by Ethereum’s rules and claimed the bots were already using unfair trading tactics.

Their lawyers said the wire fraud law did not apply to this type of case. However, Judge Clarke stated that the law covered the kind of conduct described, regardless of the tools used to carry it out.

Two MIT-educated brothers accused of orchestrating the largest MEV bot exploitation in cryptocurrency history will face trial after a federal judge rejected their attempts to dismiss fraud and money laundering charges.

Anton Peraire-Bueno, 24, and James Peraire-Bueno, 28, allegedly stole $25 million in cryptocurrency within 12 seconds by manipulating Ethereum’s MEV-Boost protocol in April 2023.

Technical Error or Deliberate Exploit?

The brothers meticulously planned their operation over several months, studying trading patterns of Ethereum bots and establishing shell companies.

They created 16 Ethereum validators using approximately $880,000 in cryptocurrency, then executed what prosecutors called a “bait, block, search, and propagation” scheme targeting three victim traders operating MEV bots.

Their exploit involved proposing “lure transactions” to induce victim traders’ bots to purchase illiquid cryptocurrencies worth $25 million.

The brothers then sent a false signature to the relay system, gaining premature access to private transaction data.

They replaced the lure transactions with their own trades, selling the illiquid tokens and rendering the victims’ holdings worthless.

Following the theft, the brothers laundered the stolen funds through complex transactions across multiple addresses and foreign exchanges with limited KYC requirements.

They converted the cryptocurrency to DAI stablecoin, then to USDC, before transferring $20 million to U.S. dollar accounts. Foreign law enforcement froze $3 million of the stolen funds.

The case comes amid rising concerns about MEV exploitation across blockchain networks.

Recent incidents include a $2 million insider attack on Bedrock’s UniBTC protocol by a former Fuzzland employee and a notorious Solana MEV bot named “arsc” that accumulated $30 million in two months through sandwich attacks.

Brothers’ Legal Battle Reaches Critical Juncture

Federal prosecutors arrested the Peraire-Bueno brothers on May 15, 2024, with Anton taken into custody in Boston and James in New York.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams described the scheme as meticulously planned, noting how the brothers “used their specialized skills and education to tamper with and manipulate the protocols relied upon by millions of Ethereum users.

The brothers face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Each charge carries a potential 20-year prison sentence. A federal judge scheduled their trial for October 14, 2025, after denying their motions to dismiss the indictment.

The court found the wire fraud charges legally sufficient, determining that the brothers’ lure transactions and false signatures constituted material misrepresentations.

The judge ruled that the $25 million in stolen cryptocurrency represented a traditionally recognized property interest, not merely contingent profits.

IRS Criminal Investigation’s New York Cyber Unit traced the stolen funds back to the brothers despite their sophisticated laundering efforts.

Special Agent Thomas Fattorusso noted that investigators “simply followed the money” using cutting-edge technology and traditional investigative methods.

Growing MEV Threat Challenges Blockchain Scalability

MEV exploitation has emerged as a dominant threat to blockchain scalability, according to recent research from Flashbots.

According to a report covered by Cryptonews in June, MEV bots now consume 40% of all blockspace on Solana and over half of the gas usage on Ethereum rollups, such as Base and OP Mainnet.

The Peraire-Bueno case represents the first criminal prosecution of MEV manipulation; however, similar exploits continue to occur across various networks.

A Ronin Network breach in August 2024 initially appeared malicious but was later revealed to be a white-hat operation, with the hacker returning $9.8 million after discovering a vulnerability in the bridge.

Recent data from EigenPhi shows more than 81,000 users fell victim to sandwich attacks in the last 30 days alone.

These attacks now account for nearly $1 billion in weekly trading volume on Ethereum-based decentralized exchanges.

A new study from MIT has found that relying too much on artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT could hinder the ability to think clearly and remember information.

Researchers at the university’s Media Lab asked 54 people to complete writing tasks over four sessions. Each person used one of three methods, which were writing without help, using a search engine, or relying on ChatGPT.

In the final session, people who had used ChatGPT were asked to write without any tools, while those who had worked without help were told to try using the chatbot. The result showed that over 83% of the ChatGPT users could not remember parts of what they had just written.

In a June 18 post on X, Alex Vacca, co-founder of ColdIQ, said the AI tool might not be helping people work better, but instead weakening their thinking. He explained that when ChatGPT handles the task, people seem to forget what was written almost right away.

To better understand what was happening in the brain, researchers used EEG machines to track brain activity during each task. They found that brain activity dropped the more someone relied on an AI tool.

People who wrote without help showed the highest level of mental effort. Those who used search engines were in the middle. Meanwhile, participants using ChatGPT showed the lowest levels of brain engagement.

The study also discusses a concept known as “cognitive debt”. This means that it may save energy in the moment when people rely on AI tools, but there could be long-term downsides. These include weaker problem-solving, less original thinking, and being more easily influenced by others.

In a recent keynote address delivered on MIT Bitcoin Expo, Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) CEO Phong Le boldly put Bitcoin as a core component of modern corporate financial strategies. With over 528,000 BTC on the balance sheet, the strategy has become the most visible and perhaps the most successful public company.

“We outperformed the entire Nasdaq, the entire S&P 500, the entire Mag Seven, and we outperformed the Bitcoin.” Le told the audience.

Strategy Chair Michael Saylor laid the philosophical foundation for Bitcoin’s corporate use cases in 2020, while Le’s keynote drove execution and financial results. The talk was part of a challenge and part of a case study, which prompted corporate leaders to question everything from education to financial assumptions and rethink their balance sheets in the Bitcoin era.

Companies are not performing. Bitcoin offers exit

On the first day of the MIT Bitcoin Expo, Le opened with a breakdown of performance issues for American companies. Of the 35 million US companies, only the top tier of the S&P 500 companies, mainly meets market expectations. The rest is stagnant. “Almost every other company is not performing.” Le said.

He pointed his finger at the confirmed financial orthodox. MBA programs, elite consultants, and Wall Street companies continue to teach the same playbook. Optimize your profit and loss statement, reinvest in traditional assets, and stick to quarterly thinking. This results in systematic inperformance. “All they can do is the S&P 500.” He said private equity, venture capital and even hedge funds rarely beat their benchmarks.

Le’s paper: It’s not a lack of talent, it’s a lack of imagination.

Strategy Bitcoin Playbook: From Cash Drugs to Digital Capital

He argued that what set the strategy apart was the decision to treat the balance sheet as a strategic asset rather than a passive asset. Most companies park cash on products like low-yielding government bonds or gold, but the strategy has opted for Bitcoin.

“Why, if you’re a company, why wouldn’t you do the same? You’ll make money from your balance sheet. It makes sense.”

Le argued that Bitcoin not only returns potential, but also offers structural advantages. It trades 24/7 and provides businesses with immediate global liquidity, not subject to central bank policies. In contrast, it is run by traditional capital markets “252 days a year, 6.5 hours per day – 19% of the time.”

The strategy fully embraced this and updated the Bitcoin Reserve in real time. “We show results every day. In fact, we update them every 15 seconds on our website.” Le said.

Rethinking accounting in the native world of Bitcoin

One of the biggest challenges for companies adopting Bitcoin is the discrepancy between traditional accounting rules and assets 24/7. The current standard was built for quarterly revenue and slow moving financial products. It is not a digital asset that is traded worldwide, not in real time.

As Phong le said: “Accounting policy is updated every five years, but in Quinkens. Accounting policy does not work with Bitcoin.”

Under GAAP, Bitcoin is treated as an intangible asset that is marked when prices fall but not adjusted upwards when they rise.

To fill that gap, the strategy employs a more transparent approach. “We show results every day. In fact, we update them every 15 seconds on our website.” Le said. This real-time report reflects the ever-occurring nature of Bitcoin, reflecting the signal to the market that its strategies are being played by a faster set of rules.

Rather than waiting for the institution to catch up, the strategy sets the standard for how to measure the performance of Bitcoin finance companies.

Why were MSTR stocks most viewed on the US market?

Since adopting Bitcoin’s financial strategy, MSTR stocks have been “Most Performance, Most Volatile, Best Volume, and Most Interesting Stock in the US.” According to Le. Its performance consistently outperforms traditional benchmarks, not just because Bitcoin was valued, but because its strategy was rooted in its identity as a native Bitcoin public company.

And it’s not alone. Le highlighted the growth list of companies replicating the model, Metaplanet, Semler Scientific, and Kulr Technology Group. All of these were better than the S&P 500 and Bitcoin after adopting a similar financial strategy. “This is a replicable strategy.” Le said. “Everyone else should do this.”

Breaking the mold: Corporate appeal for courage

Le has been shut down by challenging executives and investors to question traditional wisdom. The success of the strategy wasn’t because of chasing the crowd. It came from rejecting it.

“It takes courage. It requires independent thinking. It requires independent thinking. It requires courage. It requires Bitcoin.”

Mit Mio möchte ich heute ein Projekt vorstellen, dessen Team es sich zum Ziel genommen hat, eine dezentrale Dating-App zu entwickeln. Diese soll sich, nach Aussage des Mio Teams, wesentlich gegenüber anderen Dating-Projekten in der Blockchain-Szene abheben. Besonders an diesem Projekt ist das zugrundeliegende Messaging-Protokoll, auf welches speziell im Videointerview eingegangen wird.

Die grundlegende Frage, die sich zunächst stellt, ist, warum überhaupt die Blockchain-Technologie im Dating-Bereich eingesetzt werden sollte, bzw. welchen konkreten Mehrwert sie bringt. Wer bereits einmal Tinder oder Lovoo ausprobiert hat, findet den Grund eigentlich bei jedem Log-in: Das Log-in über Social-Media Accounts. So kann man sich z.B. bei Tinder nur mit einem bereits bestehendem Facebook-Profil registrieren, was in der Konsequenz natürlich dazu führt, dass sämtliche Nutzerdaten weitergegeben und von den Konzernen verwendet werden. Dies möchte Mio nun durch das Zusammenspiel mehrerer Technologien als Grundlage ihrer App gänzlich vermeiden.

Intro-Visual-DuoDezentralität ist allerdings nur ein Teil der neuen Features, mit denen Mio aufwarten will. Die grundsätzliche Bedienung ist intuitiv und an Tinder orientiert (z.B. das „swipen“ nach links und rechts als Bewertungssystem), wartet aber mit einigen neuen Features auf: So soll ein Nutzer z.B. statt eines Profilbildes ein kurzes, 3-6 Sekunden langes, Video zur Vorstellung hochladen. Überhaupt soll der Nutzer durch die Einbettung des Mio Tokens (ERC20) viel mehr Interaktionsmöglichkeiten und Freiheiten erhalten. Vor allem ist die Nutzung der App nicht mehr von einem kostenpflichtigen Monatsabonnement abhängig, da der User nur bei der tatsächlichen Nutzung kostenpflichtiger Features bezahlt (bei einem Teil der Features soll ein Teil der bezahlten Tokens anschließend geburned werden). Bereits durch die Installation der App soll man einen kleinen Betrag an Token erhalten und kann sich fortan durch das melden von Spam- und Fake-Accounts weitere Token dazuverdienen. Die Tatsache, dass der Mio Token also nur für die Bezahlung bzw. Freischaltung bestimmter Features dient, bringt ihm einen spannenden Status bei der Finma ein – in einem Schreiben, das dem Altcoinspekulant vorliegt,  wird er als reines Zahlungsmittel bestätigt. Es ist noch kein anderer Token bekannt, der diesen Status zugesprochen bekommen hat.

Bei der Entwicklung der App setzt das Team auf zwei Phasen. Zunächst sollen einige der Features zentral ablaufen, um so potentielle Skalierbarkeits-Probleme der Blockchain zu umgehen. In der zweiten Entwicklungsstufe soll dann Raiden verwendet werden, um zu garantieren, dass sämtliche Prozesse schnell ablaufen. Dabei wird auch die Plattform IPFS integriert, um die Bilder und Daten der Nutzer ebenfalls dezentral speichern zu können. Die Nachrichten und Chats der Nutzer werden über ein Tor-ähnliches Prinzip namens HOPR (viele kennen vielleicht den Tor Browser) abgewickelt. Dieses Zusammenspiel ermöglicht in der Anwendung dann ein extrem hohes Maß an Privatsphäre – und das bei einer Dating-App.
