Bitcoin’s supply–demand balance narrowed further last week as corporate treasuries captured a dominant share of new issuance.

Last week, two publicly traded firms, Strategy and Tokyo-listed Metaplanet, purchased more than $230 million worth of BTC.

According to their separate announcements, their combined acquisitions, totaling 2,091 BTC, represented about two-thirds, or 66%, of all coins produced by miners during the reporting period.

Strategy expands holdings despite S&P 500 snub

On Sept. 8, Strategy confirmed it had purchased 1,955 BTC for $217.4 million, translating into about 62% of all coins mined during the week.

Following this purchase, Strategy’s Bitcoin stash has climbed to 638,460 BTC, which is valued at $71.6 billion at current market prices. This equates to an unrealized profit of roughly 51.8% from the firm’s total investment of $47.17 billion.

The company disclosed in its Form 8-K filing that the latest purchase was funded through proceeds from its at-the-market equity program, which raised capital across Strife, Strike, and MSTR stock issuances. In 2025, Strategy has raised more than $19 billion for Bitcoin purchases.

Meanwhile, famed short seller Jim Chanos pointed out that the firm’s Bitcoin fundraising is increasingly relying on its MSTR stock issuance rather than the preferred stock options to fund recent Bitcoin purchases.

For context, he noted that the firm raised 92% of its latest capital through common equity while selling just $16.8 million in preferred stock. The same trend was observed last week when the firm raised 90% of its Bitcoin purchase fund through MSTR.

Notably, the latest Bitcoin purchase comes days after Strategy failed to secure a place in the S&P 500 index. Instead, the index committee added Robinhood, AppLovin, and Emcor Group stocks to its list.

Metaplanet strengthens presence in Asia

While smaller in scale, Metaplanet’s latest buy reinforced its reputation as Asia’s counterpart to Strategy.

The Tokyo-listed firm acquired 136 BTC for $15.2 million at an average price of $111,666. That raised its year-to-date yield to 487% in 2025, emphasizing its aggressive accumulation strategy.

The company now holds 20,136 BTC, purchased for $2.08 billion at an average of $103,196. As of Sept. 8, that stash was worth roughly $2.26 billion, giving Metaplanet a 9.3% unrealized profit.

Businesses Are Absorbing Bitcoin at 4x the Rate It Is Mined, According to River’s Research https://earlybirdsinvest.com/businesses-are-absorbing-bitcoin-at-4x-the-rate-it-is-mined-according-to-rivers-research/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/businesses-are-absorbing-bitcoin-at-4x-the-rate-it-is-mined-according-to-rivers-research/#respond Sat, 30 Aug 2025 17:07:56 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/businesses-are-absorbing-bitcoin-at-4x-the-rate-it-is-mined-according-to-rivers-research/

River says companies are taking in far more bitcoin each day than miners create.

The U.S.-based bitcoin financial services firm, which runs brokerage and mining operations and publishes research, released a Sankey-style flow infographic dated Aug. 25 in a post on X. In this layout, outflows are shown on the left, inflows on the right, and the thickness of each line represents the size of the net daily movement.

River infographic of net BTC flows as of Aug. 25, 2025: individuals out, firms/funds in

River’s Aug. 25 snapshot shows businesses absorbing about 1,755 BTC/day vs about 450 mined.

River defines “businesses” broadly. The category combines bitcoin treasury companies — firms such as Strategy that publicly hold BTC — with conventional companies that keep bitcoin on their balance sheets. Based on public filings, custodial address tagging and its own heuristics, River estimates that about 1,755 BTC per day flow into business-controlled wallets.

By comparison, River calculates new miner supply at about 450 BTC per day in 2025. That figure reflects the April 2024 halving, which cut the block subsidy to 3.125 BTC per block.

With bitcoin blocks averaging one every 10 minutes — about 144 per day — the result is roughly 450 BTC in new issuance daily, though the exact number fluctuates slightly as block times vary.

That math is the basis for River’s claim that companies are absorbing bitcoin at nearly four times the rate it is mined.

The infographic shows other large institutional inflows as well.

Funds and ETFs account for about 1,430 BTC/day in net inflows, which further boosts total absorption compared with new issuance. Smaller streams go to “other” entities (about 411 BTC/day) and governments (about 39 BTC/day).

River also records a small but steady flow into “lost bitcoin” (about 14 BTC/day), representing coins that the firm judges to be permanently inaccessible, such as through key loss.

On the other side of the ledger, individuals appear as the largest net outflow at about –3,196 BTC/day. River stresses that this does not necessarily mean retail investors are dumping coins. Rather, it reflects bitcoin moving from addresses the firm classifies as individual-held into those it tags as institutional.

River says the takeaway is simple: when inflows to businesses and funds exceed new issuance from miners, available supply tightens. Still, the firm cautions that the infographic should be read carefully.

First, the figures are estimates, not an exact census of the blockchain.

River relies on a mix of wallet tagging, public disclosures and external databases, which may miss some holdings or misclassify certain addresses. Second, net inflows do not always equal direct spot buying. A business wallet showing +1,755 BTC per day could reflect OTC transactions, custodial transfers or treasury reshuffling, not just exchange purchases.

For readers unfamiliar with flow diagrams, the point is this: the lines show where coins are ending up on balance, not every trade or transfer in the system. If more coins consistently end up in business, fund and government wallets than miners are producing, River argues that institutions are tightening supply at the margin.

River’s snapshot is not a price forecast, but it illustrates how ownership patterns may be shifting. If businesses and funds continue to absorb more than miners produce, the firm argues, institutions could play a larger role in shaping bitcoin’s supply dynamics.

Public companies have already acquired 96% of all Bitcoin to be mined in 2025 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/public-companies-have-already-acquired-96-of-all-bitcoin-to-be-mined-in-2025/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/public-companies-have-already-acquired-96-of-all-bitcoin-to-be-mined-in-2025/#respond Fri, 02 May 2025 03:16:31 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/public-companies-have-already-acquired-96-of-all-bitcoin-to-be-mined-in-2025/

Publicly listed companies have bought roughly 157,957 Bitcoin (BTC) as of May 1, accounting for 96% of the 164,250 BTC projected to be mined throughout the year.

Bitcoin Treasuries data shows that private companies added another 16,799 BTC to their holdings during the same period, while Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) issuers acquired 34,968 BTC.

Combined, these three groups purchased 192,925 BTC during the first four months of the year. This total surpasses the annual expected supply of newly mined Bitcoin by 17%, suggesting ongoing demand pressure from corporate and institutional entities.

Strategy continues to lead among public entities, acquiring 107,155 BTC so far this year. That alone represents nearly two-thirds of the public company supply and over 65% of the new supply.

The firm’s purchases continue to shape the corporate Bitcoin accumulation narrative, although the broader trend now includes a range of mining companies, financial firms, and treasury reserve managers.

Institutional demand surpasses issuance again

The current accumulation follows an even more aggressive purchasing cycle in 2024, when publicly listed companies acquired 331,141 BTC. Strategy was responsible for 257,250 BTC of the total.

Private companies reduced their exposure last year, selling 3,204 BTC, while ETF issuers accumulated 518,018 BTC. Collectively, these three categories acquired 845,955 BTC in 2024.

For context, roughly 217,518.75 BTC were mined throughout 2024, which means corporate and institutional demand was nearly 4x higher than the mined supply

The addition of balance-sheet-driven ownership is increasingly measurable. Publicly disclosed purchases alone now represent a meaningful share of the circulating supply, reducing the availability of liquid BTC in secondary markets.

Growing impact of absorption rates

While ETF activity has moderated compared to the previous year, the impact of sustained inflows remains material.

ETF issuers accounted for over 500,000 BTC acquired in 2024 but have added under 35,000 BTC so far in 2025. The slowdown may reflect stabilizing secondary market demand or the maturity of the initial post-approval inflow cycle.

Despite the slowdown, ETFs and corporate treasuries remain the dominant absorbers of newly mined coins. Additionally, the total amount of Bitcoin bought so far this year means institutional accumulation is absorbing the entire new supply and drawing from existing reserves.

The shift in BTC ownership structure is ongoing, with increasingly larger shares of supply being locked into long-term holdings by entities with multi-year horizons and lower liquidity turnover.
