The top US crypto exchange platform by trading volume is abruptly adding support for Wormhole (W), causing the native asset of the cross-chain messaging project to rally briefly.

In a new announcement, Coinbase Assets says it’s adding Wormhole, an interoperability project that allows communication between blockchains, to its suite of digital asset products.

“Wormhole (W) is now live on http://coinbase.com and in the Coinbase iOS and Android apps. Coinbase customers can log in to buy, sell, convert, send, receive or store these assets.”

News of the addition sent W flying, as the crypto asset went from a low of $0.61 on June 27th to a peak of $0.81 just a day later. Wormhole has since retraced and is trading for $0.071 time of writing, a fractional decrease during the last 24 hours.

According to its official website, Wormhole is currently compatible with numerous prominent blockchains, including Base and BNB Chain, the respective blockchains of Coinbase and Binance, the two largest crypto exchanges in the world.

“A fully integrated chain can use cross-chain decentralized applications (DApps) to send and receive tokens and NFTs. It can also publish and verify messages to and from the network – meaning developers can utilize the full suite and power of Wormhole.”

Other compatible chains include smart contract platforms Ethereum (ETH), Algorand (ALGO), and Avalanche (AVAX), as well as layer-2 scaling solutions Optimism (OP), Arbitrum (ARB), and Polygon (POL).

Mass decoy messaging between news agencies and readers can help protect the identity of whistleblowers, according to Dr. Manny Ahmed, the founder of CoverDrop, a whistleblower protection tool, and OpenOrigins, a blockchain firm that provides data provenance for images and videos to ensure authenticity. Both tools work in symbiosis to ensure trusted communications.

In an interview with Cointelegraph, Dr. Ahmed said that CoverDrop works by sending out large amounts of decoy encrypted messaging traffic between the readers of a news platform and the news platform itself.

This creates the illusion that every reader is a whistleblower, thus drowning out the identity of any true whistleblowers in a sea of digital noise. The executive outlined the problem whistleblowers currently face in the age of digital surveillance:

“Whistleblowers are in a tricky position because, by definition, they are part of a small set that has access to privileged information. So, even if they use end-to-end encryption, the fact that they have ever had communication with a journalist is enough to single them out.

It does not matter that they can’t see the contents of the message; just the one-on-one relationship is enough,” Dr. Ahmed continued.

The CoverDrop and OpenOrigins founder warned that advances in AI and data surveillance tools would only increase the threat to privacy and anonymity over time, creating a need for more robust defenses against the emerging panopticon of the security surveillance state.

Dr. Ahmed noted that mass data collection by governments and intelligence agencies has been ongoing for over a decade but largely ineffective because there was no efficient way to filter through the large quantities of data collected.

“They needed to hire thousands of analysts to sit down and actually target people; with AI you do not need to do that anymore,” the executive told Cointelegraph.

The rise of agentic AI allows intelligence agencies to assign an AI agent for each individual that would track all their data and provide a much more comprehensive profile of a person’s activity at a low computational cost, the executive warned.

“The threat has just escalated a lot. So, the defense has to escalate a lot as well,” Dr. Ahmed added.

The messaging app used by some members of the Trump administration and the US government has been hacked, according to a new report.

404 Media reports that a hacker stole customer data from TeleMessage, an Israeli software company that provides modified versions of messaging apps like Signal.

The US government reportedly uses modified apps to archive messages.

A Reuters photo last week revealed that Michael Waltz, the recently ousted national security adviser, was using TeleMessage to communicate with colleagues during a Trump administration cabinet meeting.

Trump said last week on Truth Social that he plans to nominate Waltz to serve as the US ambassador to the United Nations. The former national security adviser fell into hot water earlier this year for accidentally adding a journalist to a sensitive Signal chat about war plans between top Trump administration figures.

The identity of the hacker remains unknown, but 404 Media viewed the hacked material that was anonymously provided. The hacker also anonymously noted that the hack took 15-20 minutes and “wasn’t much effort at all.”

The hacker didn’t access Waltz’s messages specifically, but the thief did access data related to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the crypto exchange Coinbase, as well as other financial institutions. A screenshot shows that the hacker was able to access a TeleMessage panel that lists the names, phone numbers and email addresses of CPB employees.

The screenshot also shows an option to select 747 entries, suggesting that the attacker has access to the data of hundreds of US government employees.

The GSMA has announced that the latest specifications for RCS include support for end-to-end encryption using the MLS (message layer security) protocol.

This is great news for a sizeable chunk of users in North America, where carrier-based messaging like SMS or RCS is commonly used, and even in places where few people use it. Knowing that the messages are encrypted is important.

Note that nothing is in place just yet, but the capability is there for Google and Apple to implement. In separate statements to the Verge, both companies have stressed that they plan to implement the changes in the near future.

This is important, probably more important than we realize. After RCS was implemented for the iPhone without any sort of encryption layer, the governments of the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand issued a joint bulletin warning us not to use it and send messages using an encrypted service like WhatsApp instead. those sorts of statements don’t come lightly.

Once these changes are properly implemented by Apple and Google, we can return to one app without worry if that’s what we like. Or maybe the universal appeal of something like WhatsApp will have won us over. Either way, both companies will stay hard at work, telling you why their service is superior and why the other is sub-par.

That’s because this was never about encryption, or even RCS, for Apple and Google. It was about locking you in with their platform.

We don’t need email evidence discovered at a trial to know this, but we have it, and it pretty much says that Apple (in this case) will do whatever it takes to use iMessage to keep people from buying an Android. Google will do the same; its messaging service doesn’t offer anything you couldn’t find on an iPhone, but there are plenty of other software services Google offers to try and convince you to stay.

Staying is important for both companies. Apple is a business that makes money from selling you goods and services. What it offers is so well-regarded that it can charge too much, and people are still willing to buy it. You get what you pay for and all that.

Google doesn’t charge for Android, but Android is a pathway to your eyeballs. Google services on an Android phone are a big part of Google’s core business model, and the more people they can garner, the more money they stand to make.

For both companies, numbers are important to the bottom line.

The real question is, what will Apple and Google bake into their respective messaging apps to fan the flames now that encryption isn’t the issue? This could mean some awesome new features that integrate messaging with other apps and services, or it could mean something nobody seems to appreciate, like a new set of stickers.

Tight integration with a service like YouTube could make for an interesting messages app as long as it’s done well — and you’re able to opt out. Messages could be a reimagined Google Plus that people actually want to use.

Apple, too, can find new ways to integrate its new AI services with iMessage, and iOS users will flock to try it. If it works well, they’ll keep using it.

One thing is certain: neither company is going to give up on trying to tell you why you want and need to use its stuff or how the other is behind the times.
