Last updated:

XRP futures on CME Group has now crossed the $1b open interest milestone, becoming the fastest crypto contract to do so, just three months after launch.

The achievement shows growing institutional appetite for regulated exposure to digital assets.

CME said its wider crypto futures suite has now surpassed $30b in notional open interest for the first time. Both Solana and XRP futures crossed $1b, but XRP hit the mark at record speed, outpacing its peers and drawing fresh attention from funds and corporate desks.

The move is being viewed as a sign of market maturity and deepening liquidity in digital asset derivatives. Analysts say it reflects a new wave of institutional capital, as traditional finance increasingly embraces crypto markets through regulated venues.

High Volume Drop Tests Key Levels Before Quick Rebound

XRP itself has remained volatile. The token traded within a 5% range between $2.98 and $2.84 in the 24 hours ending Aug. 26. The steepest move came on Aug. 25, when the price fell from $2.96 to $2.84 on volume three times higher than its daily average.

Institutional buying quickly stepped in, lifting the token back to $2.92. Market participants described the $2.84 level as critical support, with volumes suggesting renewed corporate and fund activity. In the final hour of the session, XRP rose 0.7% from $2.90 to $2.92 on more than 5.7m traded tokens.

On the derivatives side, XRP futures recorded their heaviest daily activity since July 15 on Aug. 25. A total of 7,533 contracts changed hands, equivalent to more than $1b in volume. Since launch in May, CME’s XRP futures have seen over 251,000 contracts traded, representing $9.02b in cumulative notional volume.

Technical Indicators Point To Possible XRP Retest Of Lower Levels

The regulated nature of CME’s contracts, which settle to the CME CF XRP-Dollar Reference Rate and are supervised by the CFTC, has been a key factor in attracting demand. Analysts argue the milestone shows confidence in XRP’s long-term role in institutional portfolios.

Ryan Lee, chief analyst at Bitget, said XRP is sitting at a technical crossroads. Bollinger Bands are tightening, RSI remains neutral, and low buying volume suggests a possible retest of $2.60 to $2.00.

“A break above the $3.10 level with conviction and volume, and a run toward $3.40 could follow,” he added. “But derivative markets are skewed short, and upside stays guarded until momentum firms.”

XRP Futures Strength Sparks Renewed Talk Of Spot ETF Approval

The development also feeds into broader speculation about spot XRP ETFs. Several asset managers, including Grayscale, Bitwise and 21Shares, have filed applications with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Market participants believe strong futures liquidity could support those cases.

The surge in XRP futures comes against a backdrop of firm crypto markets. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled rate cuts at Jackson Hole, fueling risk appetite across equities and digital assets. While Bitcoin has dominated headlines, XRP’s rapid derivatives growth signals its expanding role among institutions.

Elsewhere in the market, other altcoins have also seen bursts of activity. Shiba Inu briefly spiked toward $0.0000135 following a short-term technical signal, while Cardano’s development efforts continue to draw interest. Yet analysts caution that sustained momentum across smaller tokens will still depend on Bitcoin’s trajectory and broader macro conditions.

Sol Price is currently consolidated above $200 and may be aiming to increase profits beyond the $212 zone.

  • Sol Price has launched a new upward move above the $192 and $202 levels against the US dollar.
  • The price is currently trading above $200, a simple moving average of 100 hours.
  • The hourly wage chart for the Sol/USD pair (Kraken data source) has an upward channel formed with $205 support.
  • Clearing the $212 resistance zone could result in the pair extending their profits.

Solana Price aims for more profits

Solana Price has started to increase considerably after finding support near the $188 zone, like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Sol has entered the short-term positive zone above the $195 level.

The price destroyed $202 resistance. The bull was able to push up prices beyond the $208 barrier. The highs form at $213, with the price consolidating profits above the 23.6% FIB retracement level of upward movements from $177 swing low to $213.

Solana is currently trading above $200 and has a simple moving average of 100 hours. It also forms an ascending channel with $205 support on the hourly chart of the Sol/USD pair.

Solana Price

The advantage is that the price faces resistance near the $212 level. The next major resistance is close to the $215 level. The main resistance could be $220. Successfully beyond the $220 resistance zone allows you to set another steady pace of growth. The next important resistance is $225. Any further profit could potentially send the price towards the $232 level.

SOL’s defect correction?

If the SoL does not rise above the $212 resistance, it may begin to decline. The initial support of the downside is near the $205 zone. The first major support is close to the $202 level.

A break below the $202 level could send prices to a $195 support zone and a 50% FIB retracement level rise level rise level from $177 to $213. If it falls below $195 support, the price could drop towards $188 support in the short term.

Technical indicators

HOURLY MACD – SOL/USD’s MACD is paced in the bullish zone.

Hourly Hours RSI (Relative Strength Index) – SOL/USD’s RSI is above 50 levels.

Key support levels – $205 and $195.

Major resistance levels – $212 and $215.

Bitcoin Next Crucial Test Lies At $127,000 — Breakout Eyes $144,000 Mark https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-next-crucial-test-lies-at-127000-breakout-eyes-144000-mark/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-next-crucial-test-lies-at-127000-breakout-eyes-144000-mark/#respond Sat, 16 Aug 2025 15:18:36 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bitcoin-next-crucial-test-lies-at-127000-breakout-eyes-144000-mark/ Bitcoin is trading in the $117,000 price region following a rather eventful week, which allowed investors to experience both sides of the market volatility. Notably, the premier cryptocurrency established a new all-time high at $124,457 before experiencing a sharp crash to below $118,000 driven by recent US PPI data. As enthusiasts await the asset’s next move, prominent analytics firm Glaasnode has unveiled the potential price targets based on short-term holders’ (STH) market activity.

Short-Term Holder Cost Basis Tips Bitcoin To Race Towards $144K

In an X post on August 16, Glassnode shares data from its Bitcoin STH cost basis model, which suggests the cryptocurrency is headed for an overheating region. For context, short-term holders refer to entities that acquired their BTC within the last 155 days. Their cost basis, i.e., average price of acquisition, often serves as a proxy for the sentiment and profitability of newer market entrants, thus dictating short-term price dynamics.

Glassnode’s on-chain data shows that Bitcoin’s STH cost basis has now climbed to  $107,000, with standard deviation bands indicating the next crucial resistance at $127,000. Notably, this price level aligns with the +1σ band, often viewed as a “heated” market threshold. This zone is expected to act as a major pivot point, either marking the onset of consolidation or serving as the launchpad for a euphoric final leg upward.

Bitcoin

However, if Bitcoin can decisively break above $127,000, the STH deviation bands suggest it may trigger accelerated market buying momentum, potentially pushing the price toward the +2σ band at $144,000 zone. Notably, the +2σ band is termed as the overheating region as it often coincides with local or cycle top and frequently introduces significant sell pressure from investors.

Meanwhile, the base STH cost basis at $107,000 now serves as a crucial short-term support; therefore, a breakdown below this could imply weakening confidence among recent buyers. In such a bearish scenario, market attention would turn to the lower deviation -1σ band at $93,000, at which investors may expect some price stability.

Bitcoin Price Overview

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $117,396, reflecting a price decline of 1.02% in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, daily trading volume has also crashed by 33.56% and is now valued at $70.56 billion.

Notably, popular analyst Ali Martinez tips the premier cryptocurrency to soon make a recovery after the flash crash of last week. The market expert explains that Bitcoin always produces a price rally following any PPI-induced decline.

Metaplanet Hits 10,000 BTC Mark Following $210M Bond-Backed Acquisition https://earlybirdsinvest.com/metaplanet-hits-10000-btc-mark-following-210m-bond-backed-acquisition/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/metaplanet-hits-10000-btc-mark-following-210m-bond-backed-acquisition/#respond Mon, 16 Jun 2025 11:06:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/metaplanet-hits-10000-btc-mark-following-210m-bond-backed-acquisition/

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has announced the acquisition of an additional 1,112 BTC, bringing its total holdings to 10,000 BTC as part of its aggressive Bitcoin Treasury Operations strategy.

The latest purchase was executed for approximately ¥16.883 billion or $117 million.

Metaplanet’s 10,000 BTC Milestone

This development closely follows the issuance of Metaplanet’s 18th Series of Ordinary Bonds, through which it raised $210 million from EVO FUND. The bonds, bearing zero interest and redeemable at face value by December 12, 2025, were explicitly designated for Bitcoin purchases.

According to the company’s press release, the 10,000 BTC milestone was achieved through a series of strategic acquisitions funded by both equity and debt instruments, including multiple tranches of stock acquisition rights and a steady stream of zero-coupon bond issuances.

This move also marks the completion of the firm’s “210 Million Plan,” under which EVO FUND was granted 210 million 0%-discount rights. Over the past year, Metaplanet’s BTC Yield, which happens to be an important performance indicator tracking BTC per fully diluted share, has soared. This reflected both increased Bitcoin holdings and shareholder accretion despite dilution.

As of June 16, the BTC Yield stood at 87.2% quarter-to-date. The company recorded 3,526 BTC in BTC Gain for Q2 2025, translating to a ¥53.412 billion increase in Bitcoin value denominated in yen.

With its BTC holdings now totaling 10,000, Metaplanet has overtaken Coinbase, which holds 9,267 BTC, based on figures reported by Bitbo. The scale and pace of its recent purchases position Metaplanet as one of Asia’s most prominent corporate holders of Bitcoin. The firm now aims to amass a total of 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027. Having already accumulated 10,000 BTC, it must secure the remaining 200,000 BTC within the upcoming 18 months.

Companies Betting Big on BTC

A growing number of public companies are integrating digital assets into their treasuries, with 117 firms now collectively holding over 800,000 BTC. The latest to join this trend is Mercurity Fintech Holding (MFH), which announced plans to raise $800 million to establish a dedicated BTC treasury reserve.

The New York-based fintech firm plans to revamp its treasury operations by leveraging tokenized finance, with Bitcoin at the core of its strategy. MFH said that it will store its BTC using institutional-grade blockchain custody infrastructure and incorporate staking services and tokenized treasury tools to enhance yield and capital efficiency.

In a similar move, Oslo-based crypto brokerage K33 has also begun holding Bitcoin on its balance sheet, after a $6.22 million raise through interest-free loans and new equity and warrant issuances.

DappRadar: DeFi and NFT Upticks in May Could Mark Start of Recovery https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dappradar-defi-and-nft-upticks-in-may-could-mark-start-of-recovery/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dappradar-defi-and-nft-upticks-in-may-could-mark-start-of-recovery/#respond Sun, 08 Jun 2025 02:37:02 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dappradar-defi-and-nft-upticks-in-may-could-mark-start-of-recovery/

As Bitcoin surged to a new all-time high in May, sparking momentum across cryptocurrencies, the decentralized app industry also saw a revival.

In fact, DappRadar’s latest findings identify May 2025 as a turning point for the dapp sector. During the same period, the NFT market also saw signs of life.

Turning Point for the Dapp Ecosystem

In May, the dapp industry exhibited renewed optimism as the daily Unique Active Wallets (dUAW) rose 8% to 25 million, amid broader positive market trends. Notable growth was seen in three key sectors: AI dapps surged 23% to 4.8 million dUAW, social dapps grew 21% to 4.3 million, and NFT dapps increased 9% to 3.9 million.

These sector-specific gains indicate stronger user engagement and contribute to a more balanced dapp ecosystem, according to DappRadar’s report. Meanwhile, AI, DeFi, and gaming dapps were found to have been converging in terms of user activity, and each captured a similar share, which evidenced a diversified and maturing market

The DeFi sector also maintained strong growth as the Total Value Locked (TVL) surged by 25% to around $200 billion. This growth aligns with the overall market rally, driven by Bitcoin’s new all-time high and Ethereum’s 40% price increase, which boosted DeFi asset values and liquidity.

Decentralized exchange Hyperliquid stood out by reaching $244 billion in trading volume, capturing about 10% of Binance’s market share despite massive criticism from prominent industry players after the controversial handling of a market manipulation incident. This achievement positioned Hyperliquid among the top 5 exchanges by trading volume, across both centralized and decentralized platforms, and within the top 10 by TVL across all blockchain networks.

NFT Market Rebounds

Meanwhile, the NFT market showed renewed activity in May, with trading volume rising 40% month-over-month to $280 million. Transaction counts also climbed 35%, totaling 2.7 million. Although these figures signal improving momentum, DappRadar said that it is premature to call it a full recovery. Continued growth over the coming months will be crucial, but the recent gains still offer a promising sign for the sector.

Ethereum regained its lead in the NFT market in May, with a 30% jump in trading volume and a 53% market share. It was followed by Immutable zkEVM at 13% and Abstract at 10%. Abstract’s 1200% surge was largely driven by speculation tied to farming incentives and potential airdrops.

The question of when a Fortune 500 technology giant will move Bitcoin onto its balance sheet took center stage at Bitcoin 2025 after Strive Asset Management chief executive Matt Cole, standing before thousands in Las Vegas, dialed Meta Platforms chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and—when the call went unanswered—left a voice message urging him to convert a slice of Meta’s $61 billion cash hoard into Bitcoin.

Strive CEO Calls Zuckerberg Over Bitcoin

Speaking to thousands of attendees in Las Vegas, Cole argued that the social-media and AI powerhouse is exposing shareholders to avoidable monetary debasement by keeping tens of billions of dollars parked in cash and short-term US Treasuries. “The case for putting Bitcoin on your corporate balance sheet has never been stronger,” he said, noting that Bitcoin’s market capitalization has surpassed two trillion dollars.

“Right now we have a global fiat debt crisis. M2 is rising almost every single day, and as M2 rises the purchasing power of dollars, or dollars that are put in short-term US Treasuries, continues to decrease.” Cole insisted that inflation gauges understate the erosion of real returns because “you also have to look at the rise of asset prices, like stocks and homes. The reality is that a corporate balance sheet in cash and short-term reserves is losing its ability to generate value for shareholders almost every single day.”

Cole linked the monetary argument to accelerating advances in artificial intelligence, warning that the technology threatens to reshuffle the S&P 500 as thoroughly as the internet did two decades ago. “Over a period of 30 years there was a 50 percent turnover in the S&P 500,” he reminded the audience.

“Our belief is that there will be a similar turnover because of AI disruption in the next 10 years. While I do not believe Meta will fall out of the S&P 500, my belief is that Meta has the opportunity to actually be the largest, or maybe the second-largest, corporation in America, if you get this right. Lean into AI innovation, but also look at the balance-sheet side of the equation.”

He closed the call by referencing Zuckerberg’s much-publicized pet goat: “You’ve already taken step one. You’ve named your goat Bitcoin. My ask is that you take step two and adopt a bold corporate Bitcoin treasury approach and vote yes on proposal number 13.”

Will Meta Break The Ice?

Cole’s public appeal drew instant commentary from market-structure analysts and entrepreneurs. Bloomberg ETF specialist Eric Balchunas observed on X that “it feels like it’s inevitable that a Big Boy US company adds btc to balance sheet. Could def see Meta being the one to break the ice.”

In a follow-up post he argued that a Meta or Microsoft allocation would carry far greater symbolic weight than earlier moves by smaller firms: “If a Meta or Microsoft adds btc to balance sheet it will arguably have bigger impact than all the smaller cos doing it, kinda like when Tom Hanks got COVID, everyone was like ‘oh sht Tom Hanks got it.’”

When a user replied that Tesla “already broke the ice, 4 years ago,” Balchunas conceded the point but added, “yes but kinda doesn’t count as of now, hard to explain but you know what I’m saying.”

Skeptics pushed back just as quickly. Larry Tabb, head of market-structure research at Bloomberg Intelligence, wrote: “What? Why? They don’t pay folks in BTC, they don’t buy stuff w/BTC, it doesn’t earn a return, they can’t use it to do anything. Only reason for a corporate to buy BTC would be for investment.” Tabb compared the idea to purchasing an S&P 500 ETF with no dividend capture, concluding that management should either pursue a formal investment mandate or return idle capital to shareholders.

Balchunas countered that the motive would indeed be “shareholder value,” leaving the market to judge whether the trade-off is worthwhile: “Time will tell.”

Zuckerberg ‘Appreciates’ Bitcoin

Outside the analyst community, founders in the Bitcoin ecosystem speculated about Zuckerberg’s personal inclinations. Lyle Pratt, chief executive of decentralized communications platform Vida Global, called Meta “the dark horse of the corporate Bitcoin acquisition game,” citing Zuckerberg’s dual-class voting control, his failed attempt to launch the Libra (later Diem) stablecoin, and his goat named “Bitcoin.”

Pratt jokingly added that Zuckerberg “doesn’t want Cameron and Tyler to have more Bitcoin,” a jab at Meta’s long-standing rivalry with the Winklevoss twins. Former Meta executive and current Lightspark chief executive David Marcus, who once led the Libra initiative, has previously said that Zuckerberg “appreciates Bitcoin,” lending anecdotal support to Balchunas’ and Pratt’s thesis.

Strive’s shareholder proposal will come to a vote at Meta’s upcoming annual meeting. Cole’s gambit was designed to raise the political cost of inaction for Meta’s board. Notably, Meta’s board has recommended against it and has not commented publicly on Cole’s Las Vegas broadside.

At press time, BTC traded at $107,948.

In the cyberdelic daze of the early 1990s, Mondo 2000 was the publication-of-record for the emerging digital counterculture. Founded by our dear pal RU Sirius, it was not just a magazine (with an expiration date), but a “strange attractor” for freaks interested in the new edge of computers, pranks, digital art, fringe culture, hacktivism, psychedelics, consciousness, weird science, and hacking. In fact, RU and the Mondo scene were the magnets that drew me to San Francisco in 1992.

In today’s surreality, RU’s madcap memetics and laugh-out-loud cybercriticism is needed more than ever. And so, he invites us to celebrate the insanity at the “Gulf of Delirium, A Gathering of the Cyberculture Tribes” in San Francisco, June 7, at the Gray Area theater. Below are the details. Turn on, tune in, and freak out.

The event celebrates the live debut of the band R.U. Sirius & Phriendz and the soft release of the band’s album The Smarter Kings of Deliria alongside talks and presentations by some of the community’s keenest minds. It celebrates the vitality of the alternative cultural universe in the wild new millennium and stirs opposition to today’s discombobulated state of the nation and the world.

Sirius is best known as the founding editor of the visionary Mondo 2000 magazine, which “was at the leading edge of a new culture emerging around digital technology,” in the 1990s, says Wired magazine, which followed in Mondo‘s wake. He is the author of 14 books, including one co-written with psychedelic pioneer Timothy Leary. Called “legendary” in the media, Sirius has been featured in a Time magazine cover story, The New York Times and numerous other publications. He has recorded three albums of potently original music: his latest with his futuristic rock project R.U. Sirius & Phriendz, one as Mondo Vanilli recorded for Trent Reznor’s Nothing Records (but as-yet-unreleased), and his late 1970s/early ’80s punk band the Party Dogs.

He and the band will be joined by kindred visionary speakers and presentations from the Bay Area’s left-field bohemian brain trust:

• Bart Nagel: Art director and photographic shaman for Mondo 2000.

• Mark Pauline: Co-founder of the machine-driven performance art collective Survival Research Laboratories.

• Bean (Tina Blaine): Former leader and co-founder of the internationally-acclaimed cybertribal electronic percussion ensemble D’Cuckoo.

• Lee Felsenstein: Seminal personal computer inventor and original hacker.

• Naut Humon: Composer, curator, performer and founder/artistic director of Recombinant Media Labs, which produces and presents artworks and performances based on spatial media synthesis and its enveloping virtual, alternative and mixed reality offspring.

Rudy Rucker: Mathematician, computer scientist, sci-fi author and a founder of the cyberpunk literary movement.

• Linda Jacobson: Extended reality pioneer and co-founder of Wired magazine.

• John Law: artist, culture-jammer, neon sign technician and primary member of the Cacophony Society and co-founder of Burning Man.

• V. Vale: Editor, writer/author, musician and founder of RE/Search Publications, whose “against-the-status-quo” works stimulate the imagination and optimistic skepticism.

• Cindy Cohn: Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

• John Sanborn: Pioneering media and video artist who has embedded his futuristic work into corporate and digital entertainment culture and the aesthetic cutting edge.

• Cintra Wilson: Writer, performer and cultural critic known as “the Dorothy Parker of the cyber age.”

The event follows through from Ken Kesey’s famed 1960s “Acid Tests” that fostered San Francisco’s freak counterculture with a 21st Century upgrade. The evening promises inspiration, provocation, brain food for thought, resistance and rebellion, and most of all reveling and fun galore for freely-freaking outsiders and futurists. Its goal is MADA, MARA and MATA approved: Make America Dance, Rock and Think Again.

The suggested donation at the door from $5 to $40; proceeds will benefit Gray Area, which recently lost critical funding due to MAGA and Musky DOGE depredations. Doors open at 7 PM. Special advance CD copies of The Kings of Deliria as well as books and other merchandise will be on sale at the event.

Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, is nearing the half-a-million Bitcoin milestone after its latest acquisition.

A Feb. 24 US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing revealed that Strategy acquired 20,356 BTC for $1.99 billion, paying an average of $97,514 per BTC.

This brings the firm’s total Bitcoin holdings to 499,096 BTC, which are now valued at over $47 billion. Since the Michael Saylor-led company began accumulating Bitcoin, it has spent $33.1 billion, including fees, at an average purchase price of $66,357 per BTC.

Severance’s Mark undergoes reintegration and comes alive https://earlybirdsinvest.com/severances-mark-undergoes-reintegration-and-comes-alive/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/severances-mark-undergoes-reintegration-and-comes-alive/#respond Fri, 21 Feb 2025 11:33:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/severances-mark-undergoes-reintegration-and-comes-alive/

What if workers were fully alienated from their labor? This is the question posed by severance, the titular procedure at the heart of the Apple TV+ hit, in which employees of the fictional corporate Lumon, divorced from their non-work selves, toil at meaningless labor in a basement-level prison. If the central metaphor of season one was that you cannot truly separate your self from your job, even with a bifurcated brain, season two tackles what happens after that knowledge becomes inescapable. Estrangement from the self must be addressed — and overcome.

The process of severance is posed as a solution to employees: Achieve work-life balance by not remembering your work day — literally leaving your job at the workplace doors (or elevators, as the case may be). But like every technological advancement flowing from corporations downward, this innovation doesn’t help workers so much as their bosses. Having no histories and context of the outer world to draw on, the severed employees of the Macrodata Refinement Division are easier to manipulate and abuse, and they don’t understand just how meaningless their work is. While the work may truly be important as well as mysterious, they’re just sorting scary numbers, utterly unaware of the point of their labor. This disaffection follows them home, exacerbated because of severance, not diminished.

As season two expands to spend more time with the outies, a fuller picture emerges of how their severance affects them during what should be leisure time. Dylan (Zach Cherry), in particular, is a sobering case study: Despite his loving wife and three nice children, he’s chronically unhappy with his lot. For Irving B. (John Turturro), his outie’s activities remain the most opaque, but he seems to spend most of his time painting the same ominous scene of the Exports Hall, trying to recapture what he supposedly left at the office. Helly R. (Britt Lower), meanwhile, appears to have a more fulfilling life than her outie; Helena Eagan temporarily takes that life over, stealing the pleasure of Helly R.’s relationship with Mark S. (Adam Scott). She may be an Eagan, the company’s heir apparent, but the obscenely wealthy corporate class still suffers the effects of alienation — estrangement from their human nature.

In a still from the show Severance, Mark and Helly stand in a sterile office, Mark holding a sign reading “missing” over a drawing of Ms. Casey/Gemma.

Mark S. and Helly R. look for Ms. Casey.
Apple TV+

Mark took the severed job in an attempt to forget about his dead wife, Gemma, for the duration of the workday, but that hasn’t appeared to translate into anything good for him. He drinks alone, he goes on bad dates, and every once in a while his well-meaning sister drags him to a dinner party he hates, where it’s just as likely that there’s nothing to eat.

But the reason Mark underwent severance — Gemma — is also the reason he’s trying to un-sever himself. Having previously refused to engage with his innie’s plight, outie Mark is now undergoing “reintegration,” whereby Mark S. and Mark meld, so he can remember his experiences inside Lumon and save Gemma, who is trapped as the wellness counselor Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman). Reintegration becomes a metaphor: The work self has finally gotten through to the rest of you that conditions are in fact intolerable. And the worse the conditions, the greater the liberation of overcoming them.

Reintegrating / The you you are

“Rebellion,” wrote Albert Camus, “is born of the spectacle of irrationality, confronted with an unjust and incomprehensible condition.” Mark S. has a kind of moxie lacking in his outie, born of his particularly unjust and incomprehensible condition. But Outie Mark’s slow dip into reintegration gives him some of his innie’s verve, as if the two selves reinforce each other’s chutzpah. By engaging with his work life, Outie Mark becomes more alive.

In a throughline that began in the pilot’s foodless dinner scene, Mark is suddenly hungry all the time. His refrigerator is mostly empty except for bottles of beer and small jars of what appear to be a chicken soup Soylent product, drinks that teach their consumers to understand food as mere calories to be hastily consumed in pursuit of a more optimized life. Mark seems to have internalized this — until he’s in the throes of reintegration, and the chicken soup Soylent produces a grimace and a trip to a local Chinese restaurant, where he scarfs plate after plate of real food. The process of becoming his whole self is exhausting and requires sustenance, but this hunger — this pleasure in food — represents something larger.

Mark is becoming less optimized — less willing to understand himself as a product of efficiency. The forces of late capitalism would have us all self-optimize into an endless hustle culture of nonstop work, but food is one human pleasure that forces us to treat ourselves like the fleshy bodies we are, and meals require spending time in a space where opportunities may arise — in Mark’s case, a suspicious run-in with Helena Eagan that propels Mark onto the faster but harsher version of reintegration.

Mark feeding his hunger, then, shows he’s less willing to contort himself, less willing to sacrifice the stuff of life to a productive scheme that teaches us to understand ourselves as workers at all times.

The opposite of alienation / The we we are

Mark’s not-so-late wife, Gemma, engaged in this kind of nourishing activity. When he misses her particularly badly, Mark opens her box of crafting supplies, tucked away in the basement; we see a clumsy candle in Christmas red and green. Crafting “gave her time to think,” Mark explains, an activity falling outside productivity culture.

This is the opposite of alienation. Karl Marx called it the life-being or the species-being, but today his wonky German translations are mostly distilled to “essence”: the idea of each human as part of humanity writ large, and the flourishing that comes when we individually and collectively organize our lives and selves outside of the products of capital.

Work takes something from you, something intrinsic and literal, making you less. You can replenish this loss with pleasurable pursuits: for Marx, this meant eating, drinking, buying books, going to the theater or the pub, thinking, loving, theorizing, singing, painting… and the less you do of those things, the greater your capital. The essence of life, in other words, comes from pleasures and socializing, while the estrangement from our human nature comes not just from work, but from understanding ourselves as workers.

Because work cannot be compartmentalized and cordoned off. If we’re divided from our work selves, we’re divided from ourselves. The path through this is one we must walk together. It’s no coincidence that the Macrodata Refinement Division’s big moment of dissent is a collective action born out of the individual paths of workplace radicalization (with the help of Mark’s brother-in-law’s self-help tome, The You You Are). Subjugation begins at work, but so does radicalization. As I’ve written previously, this is a lesson many workers who engage in collective action learn. We don’t go into work radicalized. We become radicalized at work, and even the smallest taste of collective action provides a potent sense of our power.

Like reintegration, that power carries into life outside of our jobs, making us less willing to take bad situations from others who similarly seek to exploit us. This helps explain why the wealthiest and most powerful people fight unionization efforts so hard: Compliance at work doesn’t just keep workers under the thumbs of their bosses; it keeps extractive labor capitalism as the status quo. The workplace is at the heart of alienation because it’s where we learn to be subjected — to understand ourselves as literal subjects. When we accept that our livelihoods exist by the unfathomable whims of a C-suite, we’re more likely to understand ourselves as similarly passive within other unequal dynamics, be it landlords raising rent just because they can or divestment in public education leading to life under insurmountable student loan debt. And when workers call bullshit on the conditions of work, it’s not too long before they challenge the very nature of the work itself — and the way its ethos spreads its tendrils into all aspects of life.

You don’t have to watch a science-fiction show like Severance to understand that the workplace is the central site of all that is soul-crushing and spiritually immiserating in life — you just have to go to work. The opposite is true, too. Engaging in the simple pursuits that give texture to life — eating real food, engaging in nonproductive hobbies like crafting, socializing with people you love — replenish the soul, acting as a counterbalance to the estrangement of the workplace. Fully realizing the self is nearly as hard in our real world as it is in the grimly fantastical world of Lumon Industries, even if going to town on a bowl of wonton soup isn’t quite as revolutionary an act. Here and there, reintegration into the whole self brings with it a potent sense of self-determination, joy, and power. A taste of that makes us hungry for more.

A Review of the Apple Vision Pro at the Three-Week Mark: What Apps and Experiences I Have Used the Most (and what Matthew Ball Thinks of the AVP After Six Months) https://earlybirdsinvest.com/updated-a-review-of-the-apple-vision-pro-at-the-three-week-mark-what-apps-and-experiences-i-have-used-the-most-and-what-matthew-ball-thinks-of-the-avp-after-six-months/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/updated-a-review-of-the-apple-vision-pro-at-the-three-week-mark-what-apps-and-experiences-i-have-used-the-most-and-what-matthew-ball-thinks-of-the-avp-after-six-months/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2025 10:40:40 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/updated-a-review-of-the-apple-vision-pro-at-the-three-week-mark-what-apps-and-experiences-i-have-used-the-most-and-what-matthew-ball-thinks-of-the-avp-after-six-months/

UPDATE 10:37 p.m.: I actually wriote this review in two parts, and reading it back, I can see now it reads a bit disjointedly for that reason, so I am including a separator between the two parts to make it clearer. Also, I had misnamed the Encounter Dinosaurs experience, an error which I have now corrected. Thanks!

I have also added a link to a blogpost by metaverse blogger Matthew Ball, with his opinions after using the Apple Vision Pro for six months.

Since I received my prescription lenses for my Apple Vision Pro on July 29th, I am nearing the end of my third week using the device almost every day, usually for an hour or two each day. The prescription lenses are magnetically attached to the AVP, so I can very easily remove them if and when I decide to start giving demonstrations of the Apple Vision Pro to other people!

I’m still getting used to the device myself, and I want to make sure that I am comfortable enough with it before I start giving demos to other people. Also, I will be reviewing documentation that other AVP users have already written up (like this example), so I can make sure that I give demos in such a way that I (and the person who receives a demo!) don’t accidentally damage my very expensive device!

For example, you have to remember to tell new users not to pick up the device by the facial shield, because it (like my prescription lenses) is only magnetically attached to the actual, glass-and-metal Apple Vision Pro itself, and it will detach when you pick it up by that! You have to remember to pick it up by holding onto the edges of the actual, curved-glass-and-metal device itself. I’m probably going to have to write up detailed, step-by-step instructions, so that any staff who work in the University of Manitoba’s future virtual reality lab will be able to help university faculty, staff, and students have their first AVP experience!

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention: I am so blown away by what I experienced these past three weeks (more details below), that I am 100% certain that, in addition to the Vive Pro 2 and Meta Quest 3, I will be asking the Libraries to purchase an Apple Vision Pro to make available to faculty, staff, and students at my university, to use for teaching, learning, and research purposes. In three short weeks, I have become an Apple Vision Pro evangelist! Come hell or high water, we are getting one. It’s just that good. I will repeat what I said in an earlier blogpost, written during my first week of using my Apple Vision Pro:

The Apple Vision Pro makes every single VR headset I have used to date feel like one of those red plastic View-Masters I used to play with as a kid in the 1960s. The “screen door” effect so evident in earlier VR headsets (where you can see individual pixels, making everything slightly blurry) is COMPLETELY, UTTERLY gone.

In fact, the Apple Vision Pro is such a leap forward in terms of technology, that it is going to be hard to go back to the once-formerly-state-of-the-art displays of the Meta Quest 3, and especially the Vive Pro 2, afterwards!

Anyway, let’s get back to the reason I wanted to write this blogpost: I wanted to talk about some of the apps and experiences I have had in my new Apple Vision Pro over the past three weeks, as well as give some more first impressions of the device itself.

Apple has lavished its usual slavish attention to style and construction on the Apple Vision Pro headset. It is beautiful to look at as well as to use! The front is one piece of custom curved glass, attached to a sleek, rounded metal frame, and it is the smallest VR headset that I have ever tried on (not as small as the Bigscreen Beyond, which I wrote about previously here, but then again, I have never tried that device).

Having worn other, bulkier, VR headsets, I found that the Apple Vision Pro sits higher on my cheeks, which feels strange at first, but you quickly get used to it. The AVP has many internal sensors and cameras, and it is smart enough to warn you when you are wearing the device too high or too low on your face, so you can adjust it accordingly for the best experience. Also, when you give somebody else a demonstration using the built-in guest mode, it automatically calculates the correct interpupillary distance (IPD; i.e. the distance between the pupils of your left and right eyes) so that you have an optimal view. (When giving demos on the Vive Pro 2 and Meta Quest 3 VR headsets, I now have a special app on my work iPad Pro 11 to measure someone’s IPD so I can dial in the correct value before they put on the headset.)

When you place your order for an AVP from the Apple website (or, if you were to purchase one in your local Apple Store), you will have to use a FaceID-enabled iPhone or iPad to do a scan of your face to determine the correct size of facial shield. The facial shield is highly customized to your face and your needs. For example, because I need prescription lenses, the facial shield has to be somewhat deeper to accommodate them (if I were to wear soft contact lenses instead to correct my vision, then I would need to purchase a separate, less deep facial shield, and my field of view would be a little bit wider than it would be with the prescription lenses).

Which brings me to something that I wish was better: the field of view. While I have found that the up-and-down field of view to be pretty good, I was less impressed with the side-to-side field of view. In particular, when recording spatial videos, it is disappointing when playing them back to see just how constrained they are. While they do offer you a wider-screen, “immersive” playback option for spatial videos, that, too, has its limitations, as the video tends to blur at the edges, instead of the crisp edges you would see when watching the video in a regular (small) window. But I have no doubt that this aspect of the technology will improve over time.

There are actually two different kinds of 3D videos that you can play in the Apple Vision Pro: spatial videos and immersive videos. The videos you can record and share using the Apple Vision Pro or a later-model iPhone (iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models with iOS 17.2 or later) are called spatial videos; that is, you can clearly see the 3D effect, but it is not immersive. Immersive videos are recorded using more expensive equipoment, and the results are truly spectacular—you watch the video, and you feel like you are actually present!

In fact, one of the apps I signed up for is a monthly subscription service called Explore POV (Point of View), where I can download and play high-quality immersive videos, recorded in 180-degree 3D 16K resolution. The creators visit various locations around the world, and record either one long video scene, or an edited series of scenes in one video. For example, one Explore POV video is simply the videographer walking along a beach in New Zealand, watching the surf pound onto the sand under a blue sky. When you watch it, it actually is so realistic that it feels as if you are actually there—and when you lift your hand and look at it, it is superimposed on the video! Here is the Explore POV website if you want to learn more, and here’s a recent video by the creator himself:

Separate from spatial and immersive videos are the Apple Vision Pro’s built-in 360-degree Environments, which you can turn on and adjust using a knob on the upper-right of the AVP. Turn the knob all the way clockwise, and it completely replaces your space with a selected virtual-reality Environment. Turn it all the way counter-clockwise, you are in full augmented-reality mode, where your icons and app windows hover in and over your physical environment. You can also adjust the knob to somewhere in the middle, where your central view has an Environment, which fades away at the edges to your real world. It’s one of those things which is hard to describe but easy to experience, but Apple Vision Pro Environments in themselves are so well-done and so realistic, that I consider them, alone, to be a “killer app” for the Apple Vision Pro! Quite often, I will simply close all my apps and just sit and meditate (or listen to tunes from my Apple Music library) while sitting peacefully in front of Mount Hood, or halfway up Haleakalā volcano in Hawaii, watching the sun set behind the clouds.

Given this ability to surround you in various realistic environments, it is perhaps not surprising that one of the many use cases for the Apple Vision Pro is as a device to assist in calming, centering, and meditation. There are already numerous spatial meditation apps in the Apple Vision Pro Store, but the one that I have found myself using the most is called Tripp. Tripp’s main menu has five sections (Focus, Calm, Breathe, Ascend, and Sleep) where you can select from many different kinds of guided meditations, or mix and match pieces to create a customized meditation. The Ascend section features a truly psychedelic mini-documentary on the life journey of Ram Dass, the American psychologist and popularizer of Eastern spirituality and yoga, which everybody should try out, at least once!

And, of course, there is already a lot of video content to enjoy in the Apple TV+ app and the Disney+ app, including a small but growing selection of 3D videos. There is a short but extremely well-done app called Encounter Dinosaurs which really should be something anyone who tries on an Apple Vision Pro should experience! It’s definitely a showcase for the cutting-edge capabilities of the technology, where you feel you can almost reach out and touch a real, living dinosaur! Always a good demo.

And, speaking of demos, I finally gave my first demonstration of the Apple Vision Pro to another person, my brother. And this is where I have to say, things did not go so well.

I had difficulties in getting mirroring to work (that is, being able to cast what the other person was seeing in the AVP to another device, such as a MacOS desktop, iPad, or iPhone). Once I got that working, then I was able to set it up so that I could help talk my brother through how to use the Apple Vision Pro—only to forget that I had to turn mirroring off before he could watch any content on Apple TV+ and Disney+ apps! (At least he got to try out Encounter Dinosaurs.)

All in all, trying to give a demo to another user via the AVP’s Guest Mode was highly frustrating. Perhaps I have been too quick to judge the usefulness of the Apple Vision Pro for a multi-user environment like the virtual reality lab that I am currently working on setting up for my university library system. We’ll see what happens as I give other people their first taste of the device.

P.S. I forgot to mention that I have also made five or six forays into InSpaze, the Apple Vision Pro’s premier social app, and had some wonderful conversations with people from around the world! I will save that report for a later blogpost on my blog. In the meantime, you can read what I wrote earlier about InSpaze here (before I got my hot little hands on my own Apple Vision Prto!).

UPDATE 10:30 p.m.: I just discovered that Matthew Ball (whom I have written about before on this blog) has written up a blogpost titled 9 Takeaways from the Vision Pro after 6 months, so I have linked to it from my blog. I very much appreciate Matthew’s take on things, and I wanted to share what he said with you as well, as a sort of counterpoint to my own, obviously more limited, thoughts and impressions. (By the way, I agree 100% with Matthew’s take on the EyeSight feature of the AVP. While it’s cool, I also feel it’s a bit gimmicky.)
