Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced the Digital Asset Innovation Hub, a project that will serve as a testing ground for financial technology and digital asset initiatives.

According to a report by The Business Times on June 17, the goal is to allow companies to test their tools and products while the country’s central bank monitors the process.

The announcement came during the Sasana Symposium 2025 in Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar explained that businesses will be able to test features such as programmable payments, ringgit-backed stablecoins, and supply chain financing solutions. These trials will take place in a safe and supervised environment.

Anwar said at the event:

Our ambition is clear—to align infrastructure, policy and talent across both the public and private sectors in pursuit of a digitally capable, future-ready Malaysia.

The head of the central bank, Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour, noted that Malaysia’s financial system must adapt to remain competitive.

Ghaffour listed several projects already in progress. These include updates to the country’s Rentas payment system, closer links with overseas payment networks, and work on asset tokenization.

Officials say the sandbox is not only for crypto-related projects. Other companies working on payment tech, automated compliance, or international transfers are also welcome.

mining opeartion in Hulu Terengganu and Marang.

According to a May 1 report from Malay Mail, the police seized 45 mining machines and other related equipment during the raids. The total value of the confiscated hardware was estimated at around RM225,000 (approximately $52,145).

Terengganu’s police chief, Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin, said the miners had been stealing electricity, causing Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the national power supplier, to lose about RM36,000 (roughly $8,342) each month.

Investigators believe the group behind the mining activity was running their operations out of homes and commercial properties, connecting their equipment directly to the electricity grid without permission. The operation was carried out with help from TNB’s Special Engagement Against Losses (SEAL) unit.

Although no arrests were made during the raid, the seized items were taken to the district police headquarters for further investigation.

Bitcoin mining itself is not against the law in Malaysia. However, illegally tapping into the power grid is a serious offence. Under Malaysian law, anyone caught tampering with electricity infrastructure could face up to five years in prison, a fine of up to RM100,000 (about $21,500), or both.

Meanwhile, Long Island resident Eugene William Austin Jr. was recently sentenced to 18 years in federal prison. What happened? Read the full story.

According to a local media report on February 11, smoke and flames erupted from a residence on Lorong Cekara Purnama, prompting a local to report the emergency at 11:41 AM. Firefighters managed to put out the blaze by 4:45 PM, but what they found inside raised further concerns.

Officials discovered nine Bitcoin mining rigs, several industrial fans, and a D-link router—all connected to an illegally tapped power source. This discovery adds to Malaysia’s ongoing struggle with electricity theft tied to crypto mining.

Authorities have launched an investigation to track down those responsible for the illegal operation.

Malaysia has dealt with repeated cases of miners bypassing electricity meters to power their machines. Between 2018 and 2023, such activities have reportedly cost the country around $750 million in lost electricity revenue.

One of the largest crackdowns occurred in 2021 in Miri, Sarawak. Officials seized more than 1,000 Bitcoin mining rigs after discovering that operators had illegally used about $2 million worth of electricity.

While mining Bitcoin itself is not against the law, illegally tampering with electricity lines is a criminal offense under Section 37 of the Electricity Supply Act. Violators can face fines of up to 100,000 Malaysian ringgit (about $23,700) and a prison sentence of up to five years.

Meanwhile, authorities in Thailand recently exposed electricity theft used to power Bitcoin mining rigs. How did the case end up? Read the full story.
