Mike Novogratz’s Galaxy Digital closed a $1.4 billion secured term loan facility to accelerate the development of its Helios artificial intelligence datacenter campus in Texas.

On Friday, the company announced that the loan will cover roughly 80% of the construction costs for the first phase of the project, with Galaxy Digital contributing $350 million in equity. According to a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the loan is secured by all assets of Galaxy Helios I, a subsidiary of Galaxy Digital, and it matures on Aug. 15, 2028.

The capital will fund the expansion of the Helios AI datacenter to deliver power for AI workloads under a long-term agreement with the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) cloud provider CoreWeave starting early 2026.

The move highlights how digital asset firms leverage their capital-raising capabilities and repurpose infrastructure to tap into the increasing AI compute demand. This suggests that the broader compute and digital assets infrastructures may be converging.

Galaxy Digital expects $1 billion in annual revenue from its CoreWeave deal

Galaxy also announced that the AI services provider CoreWeave brought its total commitment to a full 800 megawatts of approved capacity at the Helios campus. This means that CoreWeave is leasing power, cooling and physical infrastructure for its AI and high-performance computing (HPC) operations.

Galaxy Digital said that it expects an annual revenue of over $1 billion from its CoreWeave deal, which has a 15-year term. If it goes as planned, the company will earn an estimated $15 billion in total revenue from its contract with CoreWeave.

The company said it expects the Helios datacenter to have a power capacity of 3.5 gigawatts at full buildout. Minus its deal with CoreWeave, the data center will have an extra 2.7 gigawatts to provide to its clients, potentially earning more.

Crypto firms dive into AI

Galaxy Digital’s move into AI is part of a broader trend among crypto-native firms seeking new growth avenues as institutional capital goes to AI.

CoreWeave, originally a crypto mining company, announced on July 7 that it acquired the miner Core Scientific in a $9 billion all-stock transaction to expand its data center capacity to support its AI and HPC workloads.

Meanwhile, the Helios data center was also originally acquired for Bitcoin mining initiatives. In 2022, Mike Novogratz said that its Helios acquisition was done to increase its exposure to Bitcoin mining.

Coinbase facilitates DeFi funding via USDC amid $40.7B active loan record https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-facilitates-defi-funding-via-usdc-amid-40-7b-active-loan-record/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-facilitates-defi-funding-via-usdc-amid-40-7b-active-loan-record/#respond Tue, 12 Aug 2025 21:30:43 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-facilitates-defi-funding-via-usdc-amid-40-7b-active-loan-record/

Coinbase launched a second Stablecoin Bootstrap Fund to provide additional liquidity for the DeFi ecosystem via USDC.

According to an Aug. 12 announcement, the initiative will target protocols across multiple blockchains, starting with Aave, Morpho, Kamino, and Jupiter. Coinbase also invited protocols seeking liquidity to reach out to the exchange.

The fund represents Coinbase’s renewed commitment to accelerating stablecoin adoption across mature and emerging protocols after its original 2019 Bootstrap Fund.

Time for growth

Coinbase’s first Bootstrap Fund helped establish marketplaces for USDC across blue-chip DeFi protocols such as Uniswap, Compound, and dYdX during the early stages of DeFi development.

Notably, USDC has become the leading stablecoin in DeFi with an estimated $8.9 billion in total value locked (TVL) and $2.7 trillion in annual on-chain transaction volume.

A Coinbase spokesperson explained in a note that the timing reflects current market conditions and growth opportunities:

“We’re at an inflection in adoption of onchain financial services. We saw how successful the first fund was in helping drive the initial wave of onchain stablecoin liquidity, and saw an opportunity to leverage Coinbase’s resources to further accelerate the interest and adoption that we’re seeing today.”

The record-breaking $40.7 billion in active DeFi loans represents one factor motivating the fund’s launch.

However, the spokesperson noted crypto-backed loans constitute “a prime example of this adoption and ongoing growth, but not the only reason” for the initiative.

The fund seeks to ensure deeper liquidity for stablecoins across the on-chain ecosystem, enabling users to access reliable rates across both established and emerging protocols.

Scaling over time

Coinbase plans to scale the fund over time and distribute liquidity across additional protocols and stablecoins beyond the initial four recipients. The launch can have a direct and positive impact on USDC usage in DeFi.

Adding more liquidity to the largest decentralized money markets will decrease the borrow rate for USDC on those venues, potentially making the stablecoin more interesting for on-chain leverage. The fund could also bring more money on-chain.

Lastly, the company expressed particular interest in collaborating with pre-launch teams or projects seeking to drive stablecoin growth from inception.

The spokesperson concluded:

“We believe now is the time to build, and the Stablecoin Bootstrap Fund is here to inject liquidity in projects that can make an impact on the ecosystem no matter the size.”

Bank Insider Admits to Nearly Decade-Long Scheme of Falsifying Loan Applications To Steal Funds: DOJ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-insider-admits-to-nearly-decade-long-scheme-of-falsifying-loan-applications-to-steal-funds-doj/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-insider-admits-to-nearly-decade-long-scheme-of-falsifying-loan-applications-to-steal-funds-doj/#respond Mon, 07 Jul 2025 00:40:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-insider-admits-to-nearly-decade-long-scheme-of-falsifying-loan-applications-to-steal-funds-doj/

A bank insider and his co-conspirator admitted to running a nine-year fraud scheme that falsified loan applications to obtain funds.

In a press release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois says that former Tempo Bank senior loan officer Francis Eversman and construction company owner Gregg Crawford pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud in a scheme that spanned between 2011 and 2020.

Prosecutors say that Crawford recruited straw purchasers to serve as loan applicants in name only for properties that were often extremely overvalued. His brother-in-law, Eversman, would facilitate the approval process of the loans.

Crawford used the proceeds of the loans for purposes other than the purchase of the properties. He also provided fake lease agreements in an effort to show rental income from the properties in question.

When the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency became suspicious of the loans during an audit, Crawford told a straw purchaser to provide the regulator with fraudulent information.

FBI Springfield Assistant Special Agent in Charge Karen Marinos says the duo violated the people’s trust by carrying out self-serving schemes to increase their wealth.

“Every American citizen deserves to walk into their bank and trust the people behind the counter. In southern Illinois, these people are usually our neighbors and friends, people that we trust with our money and wellbeing. “

Eversman and Crawford will be sentenced on October 14th. They face up to 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release and fines of up to $1 million.

‘Nightmare’ – Bank of America Sues Customers After Prematurely Discharging Loan: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/nightmare-bank-of-america-sues-customers-after-prematurely-discharging-loan-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/nightmare-bank-of-america-sues-customers-after-prematurely-discharging-loan-report/#respond Thu, 26 Jun 2025 11:37:26 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/nightmare-bank-of-america-sues-customers-after-prematurely-discharging-loan-report/

The Bank of America reportedly made a mistake with a customer’s loan and ended up suing her because of it.

Diane Jaques, a 75-year-old homeowner in Concord, Massachusetts, was sued by the Bank of America after the financial institution accidentally discharged her loan prematurely, reports local Boston public news outlet WBUR.

“It’s ridiculous. It’s their mistake…

I’ve never missed a payment. I get the bill every month and I pay it.”

According to the lawsuit, she and her husband originally took out a $200,000 home equity line of credit from FleetBoston Financial, which later merged with Bank of America. Her husband has since died.

After the merger, Bank of America says it took steps to clean up FleetBoston’s paperwork on some 16,000 mortgages. However, in the process, Bank of America erroneously discharged Jaques’ mortgage, among others.

To correct the error, the bank asked Jaques to sign certain documents. Jaques says the process became such a hassle, including having to get papers notarized by a notary public, that she gave up on it, only to later learn Bank of America was now suing her over the matter.

Jacques, a semi-retired insurance agent, says,

“How can this even be allowed? It’s very shocking. It’s the last thing I need.”

In the end, Bank of America dropped the lawsuit this month after Jaques signed the necessary documents.

Says Jaques,

“I am done with Bank of America. This has been a nightmare.”

Bill Halldin, a Bank of America spokesperson, says that the bank contacted customers for permission to refile the mortgage paperwork to fix the loans mistakenly discharged. If homeowners didn’t respond or did not complete the process, the bank sued. Jaques is one of more than 100 homeowners in Massachusetts who were sued over the loan issue.

Says Halldin,

“Filing the lawsuits was the only way to ask the court to correct the record if homeowners didn’t voluntarily agree to the correction.”

According to Halldin, the bank will cover the cost of correcting the records with local registries as well as public notary services. However, the bank does not plan to reimburse attorney’s fees incurred by homeowners who hire a lawyer to handle the lawsuit.

H100 Group receives 144.8 BTC in convertible loan transactions https://earlybirdsinvest.com/h100-group-receives-144-8-btc-in-convertible-loan-transactions/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/h100-group-receives-144-8-btc-in-convertible-loan-transactions/#respond Tue, 17 Jun 2025 09:47:57 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/h100-group-receives-144-8-btc-in-convertible-loan-transactions/

Swedish health technology company H100 Group has received 144.8 BTC as part of a settlement related to the convertible loan agreement, according to a company’s press release issued Monday. With this latest deal, the Stockholm-based company holds a total of 169.2 BTC on its balance sheet.

144.8 BTC was transferred as part of the first four segments of the H100 loan agreement. This has been well received by investors up until now. In its release, H100 Group AB (“H100 Group” or “Company”) received 144.8 BTC as part of tranches 1-4 revenues under the previously announced convertible loan agreement.”

This follows a recent report that Blockstream CEO Adam Back has pledged to lead H100’s 750 million Kronor (~$79 million) funding initiative. Fixed with 150 million Krona injections in Tranche6.

The loan structure includes the flexibility of either cash or Bitcoin settlements. This will allow counterparties to choose BTC delivery, reduce Fiat friction and line up with the company’s long-term finance ministry’s outlook.

“Unexpectedly, given the strong reception, Tranche 1-4 quickly became money,” Buck told Koindsk. “(H100) expected them to convert over time when they reached their status in money.”

This financing approach allows the H100 to bypass traditional rights issues while carrying capital in a flexible way. Tranches 7 and 8 are on deck, with more room for size depending on the appetite of the market.

This also reflects the evolving financial strategy of the H100. While the company’s core business continues to focus on AI-driven health and longevity services, Bitcoin’s growth position is reshaping the way it raises, stores and deploys capital. As of now, the company’s BTC Holdings is 169.2 BTC from just 24.41 BTC prior to this latest tranche execution.

H100 shares rose 22% on Monday in response to developments.

The company is uniquely positioned at the intersection of health technology and decentralized finance as it continues to negotiate with future tranches and explores adoption of BTC as the backbone of finance.

Riot Platforms leverages $1.8 billion Bitcoin trove for $100 million Coinbase loan https://earlybirdsinvest.com/riot-platforms-leverages-1-8-billion-bitcoin-trove-for-100-million-coinbase-loan/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/riot-platforms-leverages-1-8-billion-bitcoin-trove-for-100-million-coinbase-loan/#respond Thu, 24 Apr 2025 05:42:46 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/riot-platforms-leverages-1-8-billion-bitcoin-trove-for-100-million-coinbase-loan/

Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms has entered into a $100 million credit agreement with Coinbase, using its BTC holdings as collateral.

According to the firm, the facility will be accessed through staged withdrawals over two months until the full $100 million is drawn. Riot confirmed that the capital will support expansion efforts and other corporate priorities.

The loan terms include an annual interest rate based on the higher federal funds rate upper limit or 3.25%, plus an additional 4.5%. The credit line matures in 364 days, but Riot can request an extension for another year, pending Coinbase’s approval.

The facility is unique in its structure because Riot leverages its sizable Bitcoin treasury, currently totaling 19,233 BTC, worth nearly $1.8 billion, as collateral. The holdings make the firm one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders in the world.

Riot Platforms CEO Jason Les said:

“Riot has entered into its first Bitcoin-backed facility, which provides us with non-dilutive funding at an attractive cost of financing. This credit facility is a key part of our efforts to diversify sources of financing to support our operations and strategic growth initiatives, with a view towards long-term stockholder value creation.”

Bitcoin miners face headwinds

While Riot explores new funding options, the broader mining industry faces serious challenges. A recent Bitwise report outlines two major issues confronting miners, especially those in the US.

According to the report, US tariffs on mining equipment imported from Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia have significantly increased hardware costs. These import duties range from 24% to 46%, making upgrades costly and cutting profit margins.

At the same time, mining difficulty, a measure of how hard it is to mine a block, has surged to record highs. As a result, hashprice, a key indicator of miner earnings, has dropped to around $48, down from over $60 earlier in the year.

Adding to the challenge, investor focus is gradually moving elsewhere. The rising popularity of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and corporate treasury holdings firms like Strategy and Metaplanet, which offer simpler exposure to the top crypto, has resulted in waning interest in BTC mining stocks.

Stablecoin loan repayments flag early signs of Ethereum volatility, report finds https://earlybirdsinvest.com/stablecoin-loan-repayments-flag-early-signs-of-ethereum-volatility-report-finds/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/stablecoin-loan-repayments-flag-early-signs-of-ethereum-volatility-report-finds/#respond Tue, 08 Apr 2025 02:19:47 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/stablecoin-loan-repayments-flag-early-signs-of-ethereum-volatility-report-finds/

Repayments of on-chain loans using stablecoins can often serve as an early warning indicator of liquidity shifts and volatility spikes in Ethereum’s (ETH) price, according to a recent Amberdata report.

The report highlighted how lending behaviors within DeFi ecosystems, particularly repayment frequency, can serve as early indicators of emerging market stress.

The study examined the connection between Ethereum price movements and stablecoin-based lending activity involving USDC, USDT, and DAI. The analysis revealed a consistent relationship between heightened repayment activity and increased ETH price fluctuations.

Volatility framework

The report used the Garman-Klass (GK) estimator. This statistical model accounts for the full intraday price range, including open, high, low, and close prices, rather than relying solely on closing prices.

According to the report, this method enables more accurate measurement of price swings, particularly during high-activity periods in the market.

Amberdata applied the GK estimator to ETH price data across trading pairs with USDC, USDT, and DAI. The resulting volatility values were then correlated with DeFi lending metrics to assess how transactional behaviors influence market trends.

Across all three stablecoin ecosystems, the number of loan repayments showed the strongest and most consistent positive correlation with Ethereum volatility. For USDC, the correlation was 0.437; for USDT, 0.491; and DAI, 0.492.

These results suggest that frequent repayment activity tends to coincide with market uncertainty or stress, during which traders and institutions adjust their positions to manage risk.

A rising number of repayments may reflect de-risking behaviors, such as closing leveraged positions or reallocating capital in response to price movements. Amberdata views this as evidence that repayment activity may be an early indicator of changes in liquidity conditions and upcoming Ethereum market volatility spikes.

In addition to repayment frequency, withdrawal-related metrics displayed moderate correlations with ETH volatility. For instance, the withdrawal amounts and frequency ratio in the USDC ecosystem exhibited correlations of 0.361 and 0.357, respectively.

These numbers suggest that fund outflows from lending platforms, regardless of size, may signal defensive positioning by market participants, reducing liquidity and amplifying price sensitivity.

Borrowing behavior and transaction volume effects

The report also examined other lending metrics, including borrowed amounts and repayment volumes. In the USDT ecosystem, the dollar-denominated amounts for repayments and borrows correlate with ETH volatility at 0.344 and 0.262, respectively.

While less pronounced than the count-based repayment signals, these metrics still contribute to the broader picture of how transactional intensity can reflect market sentiment.

DAI displayed a similar pattern on a smaller scale. The frequency of loan settlements remained a strong signal, while the ecosystem’s smaller average transaction sizes muted the correlation strength of volume-based metrics.

Notably, metrics such as dollar-denominated withdrawals in DAI showed a very low correlation (0.047), reinforcing the importance of transaction frequency over transaction size in identifying volatility signals in this context.

Multicollinearity in lending metrics

The report also highlighted the issue of multicollinearity, which is high intercorrelation between independent variables within each stablecoin lending dataset.

For example, in the USDC ecosystem, the number of repays and withdrawals showed a pairwise correlation of 0.837, indicating that these metrics may capture similar user behavior and could introduce redundancy in predictive models.

Nevertheless, the analysis concludes that repayment activity is a robust indicator of market stress, offering a data-driven lens through which DeFi metrics can interpret and anticipate price conditions in Ethereum markets.

Wells Fargo Sues JPMorgan Chase Over Soured $481,000,000 Loan, Says US Bank Aware Seller Had Inflated Income: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wells-fargo-sues-jpmorgan-chase-over-soured-481000000-loan-says-us-bank-aware-seller-had-inflated-income-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wells-fargo-sues-jpmorgan-chase-over-soured-481000000-loan-says-us-bank-aware-seller-had-inflated-income-report/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2025 08:40:55 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wells-fargo-sues-jpmorgan-chase-over-soured-481000000-loan-says-us-bank-aware-seller-had-inflated-income-report/

Two of the largest banks in the US are reportedly locked in a legal battle over a $481 million commercial property loan.

Wells Fargo is suing JPMorgan Chase, the largest back in the US, over accusations it greenlighted a real estate loan even though it allegedly knew that the financial statements were fraudulent, reports Reuters.

In 2019, JPMorgan issued a loan to real estate development and investment firm Chetrit Group to finance the purchase of 43 multi-family buildings with 8,671 apartments across 10 states.

Acting as the investors’ trustee, Wells Fargo alleges that JPMorgan and Chetrit knew that the sellers had fraudulently inflated the buildings’ historical net operating income by 25% even before closing the deal at $522 million.

A property’s historical net income is a financial metric that measures the income generated by a building over a specific time frame. A property’s past earnings are typically used to assess its potential value.

Wells Fargo claims that JPMorgan approved the overvalued property deal to reap millions of dollars in fees, thinking that the assets would eventually be dumped on investors who wouldn’t realize the buildings were not as profitable as declared on paper.

Chetrit’s loan turned sour in 2022 and, in the process, Wells Fargo says investors in the trust have lost tens of millions of dollars.

“[JPMorgan] had an obligation to engage in due inquiry to determine the scope of the fraudulent reporting. Instead, [JPMorgan] plowed ahead as if nothing unusual had happened without even bothering to correct known errors in the numbers.”

Wells Fargo is asking the court to order JPMorgan to either pay for damages or repurchase the loan and make the investors whole.

JPMorgan and Chetrit have not yet issued a statement regarding the case.

In a statement from February 26, the IMF’s executive director for El Salvador, Méndez Bertolo, explained that the loan program aims to improve governance, transparency, and economic resilience. He noted that Bitcoin-related risks are being managed and outlined recent changes to the country’s Bitcoin Law.

According to Bertolo, Bitcoin will no longer be considered legal tender. Its use will remain optional, and tax payments must be made in US dollars.

While the government must follow the IMF’s restrictions, President Nayib Bukele remains committed to Bitcoin as part of El Salvador’s financial strategy. On March 3, he announced another purchase, increasing the country’s total Bitcoin holdings to 6,100 BTC.
