Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • You can now customize icon shapes on your Pixel Launcher’s home screen.
  • Android will give you five options. Including the default circle, there’s square, four-sided cookie, seven-sided cookie, and arch.
  • These options are currently only available in the August 2025 Android Canary release, but we expect it won’t be long before they make their way into the QPR2 track.

Hot off the heels of the Pixel 10 launch, Google unveiled a new Android Canary release. The August 2025 Android Canary update rolled out today to users enrolled in the Canary program, and it finally brings a long-awaited personalization option: the ability to customize icon shapes on the home screen. While the new version doesn’t let you create your own icon shape, it does let you choose from five delightful presets, one of which will definitely suit your fancy.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

After installing the latest Canary release and opening the Wallpaper & Style app, developer Kieron Quinn noticed that the “Icons” menu had changed. Instead of only having a toggle to enable icon theming, the “Icons” menu now has several icon shape options. These include the default circle shape as well as new square, four-sided cookie, seven-sided cookie, and arch options.

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority

Interestingly, the sixth “complex clover” shape that we spotted back in March is missing from this page. We’re not sure why that shape was removed, but perhaps it clashed too heavily with certain icons.

Another thing missing from this build is the new forced icon theming feature that Google added in Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1. It’s not clear why, but we suspect this is merely a quirk of the build date and release structure of the latest Canary versus the latest QPR beta. The next Canary release may add the forced theming feature, while the next QPR2 beta is likely to gain these new icon shape options, though nothing is guaranteed. We’ll keep an eye out on both release tracks to see what happens with this feature as well as Google’s other upcoming icon customization options.

Anthropic Lets Claude Models Shut Down Harmful Conversations https://earlybirdsinvest.com/anthropic-lets-claude-models-shut-down-harmful-conversations/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/anthropic-lets-claude-models-shut-down-harmful-conversations/#respond Tue, 19 Aug 2025 01:04:59 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/anthropic-lets-claude-models-shut-down-harmful-conversations/

The artificial intelligence company (AI) Anthropic has added a new option to certain Claude models that lets them close a chat in very limited cases.

The feature is only available on Claude Opus 4 and 4.1, and it is designed to be used as a last step when repeated attempts to redirect the conversation have failed, or when a user directly asks to stop.

In an August 15 statement, the company stated that the purpose is not about protecting the user, but about protecting the model itself.

Anthropic noted that it is still “highly uncertain about the potential moral status of Claude and other LLMs, now or in the future”. Even so, it has created a program that looks at “model welfare” and is testing low-cost measures in case they become relevant.

The company said only extreme scenarios can trigger the new function. These include requests involving attempts to gain information that could help plan mass harm or terrorism.

Anthropic pointed out that, during testing, Claude Opus 4 resisted replying to such prompts and showed what the company called a “pattern of apparent distress” when it did respond.

According to Anthropic, the process should always begin with redirection. If that fails, the model can then end the chat. The company also stressed that Claude should not close the conversation if a user seems to be at immediate risk of harming themselves or others.

On August 13, Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, received a new update. What does it include? Read the full story.

Still confused by dApps? Let’s fix that https://earlybirdsinvest.com/still-confused-by-dapps-lets-fix-that/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/still-confused-by-dapps-lets-fix-that/#respond Sat, 16 Aug 2025 12:02:46 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/still-confused-by-dapps-lets-fix-that/

You seemed to like the Crypto 101 series we did last week, so we’re back with another quick edition like that today 🥳

(Btw, if you’re new here, we’ve already covered different types of trading, CEXs vs. DEXs, hot vs. cold wallets, and how to notice a coin’s red flags. You can still catch up if you missed them.)

One thing we didn’t talk about, though – and some of you asked for – is dApps.

So, let’s do it right now 👇

The Office meme: Dwight stretching

First off, what are dApps?

dApps, or decentralized applications if we’re talkin’ full government names, are apps that run on a blockchain.

With regular apps, a single company owns the servers, the code, and your data. They can change the rules or shut it down anytime. Instagram, Spotify, Netflix – all work this way.

In dApps, on the other hand, the rules live in smart contracts – bits of code stored on the blockchain.

They run automatically when certain conditions are met, and they’re kept online by thousands of independent computers (nodes) instead of a single company.

There’s no Mark Zuckerberg controlling the whole thing. You connect with a crypto wallet like Zengo, and you keep control of your assets and data.

And… what can you do with them?

Anything you can do with a regular app + a lot more that only works in crypto:

  • Trading (like dYdX);

  • Borrowing/lending (like Aave);

  • Gaming (like Axie Infinity);

  • NFTs (like OpenSea);

  • Social (like Farcaster);

  • Etc, etc, etc.

Basically, if there’s a Web2 version of something, someone’s probably building a decentralized Web3 version of it.

And that’s important because it’s where crypto actually does stuff – you can use tools, swap tokens, earn yield, collect NFTs, and join communities.

Brent Rambo thumbs up meme

But before you get too hyped, let’s be honest – dApps obviously aren’t perfect:

👉 A lot of them still feel like using early internet – clunky interfaces and confusing terms, which makes them not so beginner-friendly;

👉 You also have to deal with blockchain quirks like gas fees and waiting for transactions to confirm;

👉 Since everything’s decentralized, there’s no customer support to rant to if you mess something up;

👉 Some slow down badly when too many people use them at once;

👉 Smart contract bugs can let hackers drain funds – and there’s no undo button;

👉 Fake or scam dApps can trick you into connecting your wallet and steal your assets;

👉 Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that the legal rules are still unclear: no central authority also means regulators aren’t sure what to do with them, and that uncertainty could become a problem down the line.

Still, if you can get past the bumps, dApps are where crypto starts to feel real.

Just go in with curiosity, caution, and maybe triple-check the URL before you click connect.

YouTube now lets TV viewers jump straight to the highlights https://earlybirdsinvest.com/youtube-now-lets-tv-viewers-jump-straight-to-the-highlights/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/youtube-now-lets-tv-viewers-jump-straight-to-the-highlights/#respond Wed, 30 Jul 2025 21:23:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/youtube-now-lets-tv-viewers-jump-straight-to-the-highlights/

What you need to know

  • YouTube Premium users can now skip right to the good stuff on the big screen.
  • The Jump Ahead feature is already live on devices like the Nvidia Shield TV and Google TV streamer.
  • The feature studies where most people skip (sponsors, fluff, awkward intros) using AI and yeets you past the nonsense.

YouTube Premium users on TV are starting to get access to the new Jump Ahead feature, which lets you skip straight to the key parts of a video.

Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority spotted the Jump Ahead feature working on his Nvidia Shield TV. It was previously limited to YouTube’s web and mobile apps, but it’s now popping up on TVs too.

The TV version of Jump Ahead works a bit differently than on mobile or web. Instead of showing a “Jump Ahead” button when you try to skip past a popular spot, it marks the ideal skip point with a dot on the progress bar. When you fast-forward using your remote, the dot gets highlighted, and hitting it again jumps you straight to that moment.

Way better than double-tap hell

Prior to this update, double-tapping on YouTube just skipped a few seconds ahead. While the app did add a waveform to show popular parts of a video, it wasn’t exactly the easiest or most useful way to find key moments.

So, if you hate waiting around, Jump Ahead might be your new favorite YouTube feature.

YouTube Jump Ahead feature seen on its TV app

(Image credit: Android Authority)

The tool is a smarter jump to the parts people actually care about. It uses AI to track viewing habits and takes you straight to the scenes most viewers tend to fast-forward to.

YouTube’s AI-based feature, which started testing last year, is quickly becoming a go-to for regular viewers. It helps skip past sponsors and fluff, jumping right to the parts that actually matter.

YouTube quietly lists Jump Ahead as available on TV devices, but there’s no clear rollout timeline. It’s not popping up on every screen yet, and YouTube is keeping mum with no official launch news so far. Over at Android Police, they’ve already spotted Jump Ahead in action on their Google TV streamer.

Navan’s New AI Platform Lets Businesses Deploy Full Teams https://earlybirdsinvest.com/navans-new-ai-platform-lets-businesses-deploy-full-teams/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/navans-new-ai-platform-lets-businesses-deploy-full-teams/#respond Mon, 30 Jun 2025 02:05:14 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/navans-new-ai-platform-lets-businesses-deploy-full-teams/

Navan, a travel and expense management company, has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) system called Navan Cognition, built to help companies create and manage full teams of AI workers.

In an announcement published on June 25, the platform connects several AI agents, each trained to perform a specific job.

This setup is supervised to catch serious mistakes before they cause problems. The goal is to keep the system reliable, especially during complex tasks.

Ilan Twig, co-founder and CTO of Navan, said:

Navan Cognition makes it easy to design, test, and launch sophisticated multi-agent AI applications with simple, plain-language prompts and one-click deployment.

Navan Cognition has been used internally at Navan since 2023. Ava, an AI assistant powered by Navan Cognition, runs on the platform and handles daily support requests from customers. It assists with tasks such as processing refunds, canceling trips, upgrading seats, and resolving travel issues.

Currently, Navan plans to open the platform to other businesses. Companies will be able to build their own AI teams using plain instructions.

These teams can be set up, tested, and deployed with simple tools, without the need for technical skills. Managers will also be able to track performance and update their AI agents as needed.

Dr. Itamar Kahn, a neuroscience professor at Columbia University, praised the system’s ability to avoid serious errors while handling large volumes of sensitive tasks.

On June 23, Goldman Sachs announced that its in-house AI assistant will be made available to all employees. What did the company say? Read the full story.

The Supreme Court lets Trump nullify the Convention Against Torture https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-supreme-court-lets-trump-nullify-the-convention-against-torture/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-supreme-court-lets-trump-nullify-the-convention-against-torture/#respond Tue, 24 Jun 2025 05:50:02 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-supreme-court-lets-trump-nullify-the-convention-against-torture/

In a short, one-paragraph order, the Republican justices ruled on Monday evening that President Donald Trump may effectively nullify a federal law and an international treaty that is supposed to protect immigrants from torture. The Court’s order in Department of Homeland Security v. D.V.D. does not explain the GOP’s justices’ reasoning, although Justice Sonia Sotomayor responds to their silent decision in a 19-page dissent joined by her two Democratic colleagues.

The Court’s order is only temporary, and will permit Trump to send immigrants to countries where they may be tortured while the D.V.D. case is fully litigated. It is possible that one or more of the Court’s Republicans could reverse course at a later date. But it is hard to know what arguments might persuade them to do so because the justices in the majority did not explain why they decided this case the way they did.

Federal law requires that the United States shall not “expel, extradite, or otherwise effect the involuntary return of any person to a country in which there are substantial grounds for believing the person would be in danger of being subjected to torture.” This statute implements a treaty, known as the Convention Against Torture, which the United States ratified over three decades ago.

Trump’s lawyers, however, claim that they uncovered a loophole that permits the Trump administration to bypass these laws, at least with respect to some immigrants.

Typically, before a noncitizen may be removed from the United States, they are entitled to a hearing before an immigration judge. The immigration judge will inform the person facing deportation which countries they might be sent to, allowing the noncitizen to object to any countries where they fear they may be tortured. If the immigration judge determines that these objections are sufficiently serious to trigger the Convention Against Torture’s protections, the judge may still issue an order permitting the immigrant to be deported — but not to the nation or nations the immigrant raised objections about.

The D.V.D. case involves noncitizens who have already been through this process. In their case, an immigration judge determined that they may be deported, but not to specific countries. After the hearing process was complete, however, the Trump administration unexpectedly announced that it would deport the D.V.D. plaintiffs to other nations that were not previously under consideration.

That means that no immigration judge has determined whether these immigrants may be sent to those particular nations, and the immigrants have not been given a meaningful opportunity to object to the new countries where they are about to be deported. Using this loophole, the Trump administration seeks to deport them without a new hearing.

The Trump administration, moreover, appears to have intentionally selected countries where the noncitizens are likely to be unsafe. It wishes to deport many of these immigrants to South Sudan, for example, a country that was recently in a civil war, and where an uneasy peace appears to be collapsing. Others are slated for removal to Libya despite the fact that, according to Sotomayor’s dissent, they “would have landed in Tripoli in the midst of violence caused by opposition to their arrival.”

The Trump administration, in other words, appears to have created a deadly trap for immigrants who fear torture in their home nations. These noncitizens may object to being sent home under the Convention Against Torture, and an immigration judge may even rule in their favor. But the Trump administration may still send them somewhere else even more dangerous.

If you are interested in the specific legal arguments Trump’s lawyers raised to justify this trap, I summarized them here. But, again, it is not possible to determine which of these arguments persuaded a majority of the justices because those justices did not even bother to explain their decision.

ChatGPT’s AI coder Codex now lets you choose the best solution https://earlybirdsinvest.com/chatgpts-ai-coder-codex-now-lets-you-choose-the-best-solution/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/chatgpts-ai-coder-codex-now-lets-you-choose-the-best-solution/#respond Sun, 15 Jun 2025 23:18:55 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/chatgpts-ai-coder-codex-now-lets-you-choose-the-best-solution/

Codex

ChatGPT’s Codex, which is an AI agent that lets you code and delegate programming tasks, is now testing a new feature that lets you choose the best solution.

OpenAI launched Codex in April, and it’s a great tool, but it’s nowhere close to replacing entry-level engineers.

OpenAI insists Codex could help developers achieve more by delegating their tasks to different agents, and a new update brings it closer to the expectations set by the company.

As per the release notes, ChatGPT Codex can now generate multiple responses simultaneously for a single task.

This means users can now explore multiple solutions, and pick the best approach instead of asking OpenAI to give another approach.

In addition, OpenAI has added some keyboard shortcuts and a page to explore them.

For example, you can now open Codex by pressing ⌘-/ on macOS and Ctrl+/ on other platforms. The update has added a “branch” query parameter in addition to the existing “environment”, “prompt” and “tab=archived” parameters.

Here’s the complete changelog:

  • Added a loading indicator when downloading a repo during container setup.
  • Added support for cancelling tasks.
  • Fixed issues causing tasks to fail during setup.
  • Fixed issues running followups in environments where the setup script changes files that are gitignored.
  • Improved how the agent understands and reacts to network access restrictions.
  • Increased the update rate of text describing what Codex is doing.
  • Increased the limit for setup script duration to 20 minutes for Pro, Team, and Business users.
  • Polished code diffs: You can now option-click a code diff header to expand/collapse all of them.

Codex is based on codex-1, which is a new version of ChatGPT based on the existing o3 model, but it has been optimized for coding, which results in increased accuracy.

Codex pulls codebase from GitHub, and it can write new code, propose pull requests, and run each task in its own sandbox.

Codex is available with $20 Plus subscription.

next software update is set to bring a major change to how data can be added to its blockchain.

Scheduled for release on October 30, Bitcoin Core 30 will lift the old 80-byte limit on the OP_RETURN function, and replace it with a cap of 4 megabytes per output.

This will enable users to include more content, such as full documents, text, and images, directly in Bitcoin transactions. Developer Gloria Zhao confirmed the change in a GitHub post on June 9.

Zhao explained that the role of developers is not to decide what kinds of transactions are acceptable. Instead, she said it is up to users to decide how they want to use the blockchain.

Additionally, the lead author of the proposal, Peter Todd, views this as a means to unlock new applications for Bitcoin beyond payments.

Developers had already hinted back in May that this update was coming. OP_RETURN gained recognition when it was utilized to embed items such as non-fungible token (NFT) style images.

However, the expanded data limit has caused disagreement within the community. Some longtime supporters argue that this kind of update contradicts what Bitcoin was intended to be: a simple, secure tool for sending money.

Dennis Porter, CEO of the Satoshi Action Fund, stated that he had helped raise over $200,000 to support the work of Bitcoin Core developers, but now feels let down and will not be donating again.

Meanwhile, on May 18, Saifedean Ammous, author of The Bitcoin Standard, shared his thoughts on how to address spam on the Bitcoin network. What did he say? Read the full story.

Saylor shoots his shot for Joe Rogan spot: ‘Let’s talk about Bitcoin’ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/saylor-shoots-his-shot-for-joe-rogan-spot-lets-talk-about-bitcoin/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/saylor-shoots-his-shot-for-joe-rogan-spot-lets-talk-about-bitcoin/#respond Sun, 01 Jun 2025 04:57:01 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/saylor-shoots-his-shot-for-joe-rogan-spot-lets-talk-about-bitcoin/

Strategy co-founder Michael Saylor has publicly expressed interest in discussing Bitcoin on the world’s most-listened-to podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.

“Hey @joerogan, let’s talk about Bitcoin,” Saylor said in a May 31 X post in response to a Joe Rogan fan account asking, “Who’s one guest you’d love to see Joe Rogan interview that he hasn’t had on yet?”

Saylor’s post triggered excitement among the Bitcoin community

Saylor’s post prompted speculation within the Bitcoin (BTC) community. Popular Bitcoiner, The Bitcoin Therapist, said, “This interview will shatter the internet.”

Crypto analyst Kook told their 164,200 X followers that “Saylor is going to Bitcoin pill Joe Rogan.” Meanwhile, crypto commentator Brandon MacDougal said, “For the first time ever, I’ll be watching a Joe Rogan podcast if Saylor is there.”

Rogan has frequently discussed crypto and Bitcoin on his podcast and has made several pro-Bitcoin comments over the years. In an October 2023 episode with OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, Rogan said that Bitcoin fascinates him the most of all cryptocurrencies.

“The real fascinating crypto is Bitcoin. That’s the one that I think has the most likely possibility of becoming a universal viable currency. It’s limited in the amount that it can be,” Rogan said.

“I love the fact that it’s been implemented,” he added.

Although Rogan has yet to respond to Saylor’s post, featuring a guest from the Bitcoin industry wouldn’t be unfamiliar territory. Even in Bitcoin’s early days, Rogan gave the topic airtime on his podcast.

Between 2014 and 2016, Bitcoin entrepreneur Andreas Antonopoulos made several appearances on Rogan’s podcast when Bitcoin was still trading below $1,000.

Saylor’s firm Strategy, holds 580,250 Bitcoin, worth $60.47 billion, according to Saylor Tracker.

Saylor recently speculated why Bitcoin’s price is not yet $150,000. He said holders without a long-term outlook have been selling off while a new cohort of investors are beginning to enter the market.

“I think we’re going through a rotation right now,” Saylor said on the Coin Stories podcast with Natalie Brunell on May 9.
