Another report from a Chinese social media website claims to have discovered an alleged look at Xiaomi’s next flagship phone.

A post on Weibo by Why Lab highlighted the sudden appearance of the Xiaomi 17 or 17 Pro, courtesy of the company’s official account. The company has seemingly changed its profile icon to the suspected upcoming series in preparation for teaser material and its official launch. The device features a rather large external display on its rear panel that fully encompasses its two cameras.

While it’s not completely edge-to-edge, the external display still appears to be a generous size, capable of showing a clock, and likely more from within Xiaomi’s mobile OS.

Leica camera branding is also spotted right under this external display and camera array. The leaked top-half rendering suggests the device’s physical buttons (power, volume rocker) will be placed on its right side. Moreover, the phone seems to have rounded corners, flat sides, and potentially a fully flat display. A report by Android Headlines chimed in, claiming that this rendering is of the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.

Furthering this suspicion is a post on Weibo from the other day by the company’s head, Lu Weibing. Lu Weibing teased that the upcoming series is reportedly the Xiaomi 17, and will consist of the base 17 model, the Xiaomi 17 Pro, and the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. The post states the phone will rock the recently confirmed Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the successor to the Elite from 2024, when it launches “this month.”

Xiaomi’s making moves

Xiaomi’s head also teases that the 17 Pro will be a “sophisticated compact imaging flagship,” while the 17 Pro Max is designed to be “the more powerful” flagship in the industry.

Earlier this month, an alleged live photo of Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship series was posted online, showing off this external display. It was previously assumed that this would end up launching on the Xiaomi 16 series, but it seems things have since changed, and we’re hoping up to 17, instead. Either way, an external display on a slab phone is something we haven’t seen from Xiaomi since the Mi 11 Ultra days.

The device is expected to rock a triple camera setup: two lenses within the camera visor-esque external display, and a final lens right under it in a pill-shaped container. Specifications are still up in the air, but if Xiaomi is planning on a launch later in September, we won’t have to wait that long.

• Galaxy Watch 8 series shows up in another major leak, as prominent tipster Evan Blass puts out life-like renders via his newsletter.
• The renders allege that the upcoming Galaxy 8 smartwatch will show up as a trio: Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, and Galaxy Watch Ultra(2025).
• Samsung is due to launch these watches along with its foldables at the Summer Unpacked, rumored to take place next month.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 leaks keep getting better as we get closer to the rumored launch in early July. This time, prominent tipster Evan Blass posted renders of the alleged smartwatch lineup, giving us a good look at what to expect from this year’s series.

Blass, in his newsletter, posted three images of the upcoming Galaxy Watch 8 series, showing off their design and potential colorways. Right off the bat, Blass says that the Korean OEM could launch this year’s series as a trio consisting of the standard Galaxy Watch 8, the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, as well as the new Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025).

Last week, similar images cropped up online showing off the trio’s design as well as some of its physical buttons. But this is the first time the new Ultra model is being referred to as the Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025). Blass’ renders imply that all three watches will sport a squircle design.

To start, the standard Galaxy Watch 8 could allegedly show up in a smoother, less noisy square-ish silver base topped by a circular dial. The Galaxy Watch 8’s design sports a moderate black border/bezel around the face’s circumference. The renders also show two physical buttons on one side.

The renders show the alleged Galaxy Watch 8 Classic in a rugged and thicker, silver and black colorway, sporting what looks like a rotating bezel. It gives us a clear look at two buttons on one side, flanking a smaller orange button, also rumored to be the “Quick” button, possibly giving users access to apps that they use often. Previous leaks suggest that the Classic variant will supposedly arrive in a single size (47mm), with a 1.5-inch display, and will have a 450mAh battery capacity.

As for the Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025), as the tipster calls it, it could show up in a deep blue colorway with a smoother silver bezel surrounding the dial. It remains unclear if this watch will have a rotating bezel, as it seems to have a much smoother outer bezel without the ridges. The renders show the watch will possess the same two physical buttons seen on the other two models and an additional smaller orange button on one side.

While these are still leaks and need to be taken with a grain of salt, the Galaxy Watch 8 series is expected to debut later this summer during Samsung’s Unpacked, which isn’t too far away.

Hackers say they just posted a massive new trove of T-Mobile customer data online – but the details of the data dump are in question.

Cyber thieves uploaded the data to a popular dark web forum, according to Cybernews.

The outlet’s researchers say a sample of the data appears to contain some emails linked to prior T-Mobile breaches, along with “some new data points not seen in previous T-Mobile attacks.”

But the mobile giant says the malicious actors are flat-out lying.

“Any reports of a T-Mobile data breach are inaccurate. We have reviewed the sample data provided and can confirm the data does not relate to T-Mobile or our customers.”

Researchers say the data contains full names, dates of birth, tax IDs, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, device IDs, cookie IDs and IP addresses.

“If this data is legitimate, exposing 64M lines of highly sensitive information poses a serious threat of identity theft/fraud, surveillance, and further, better-targeted attacks on customers.”

The alleged data dump comes as 76 million T-Mobile customers begin to receive their share of a $350 million payout following a 2021 data breach and class action settlement.

Cybercriminals are attempting to extort education workers after a hack left their sensitive personal data at risk.

Early this year, an investigation from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike determined that PowerSchool – which operates a widely-used Student Information System (SIS) – witnessed a data breach affecting millions of US school kids.

PowerSchool’s SIS software helps schools track students’ attendance, grades, addresses and oftentimes very specific personal information like Social Security numbers or health history.

PowerSchool disclosed that “current and former students and educators” had their names, contact details, dates of birth, limited medical alert information, Social Security numbers and “other related information” compromised.

Months later, state school leaders and employees from at least 20 North Carolina school systems have reported that hackers have attempted to extort them via threatening emails.

The NBC-affiliated WRAL News reports that the extortion attempt asks for a payment in cryptocurrency in exchange for keeping the victims’ data secret.

While PowerSchool says that the threat has been contained, cybersecurity expert Doug Levin said to “take that with a grain of salt.”

Says Levin,

“We also always encourage literally everyone, whether you’ve been caught up in this incident or not, to just freeze their credit records at the credit reporting agencies… It is a simple step that you can take to provide some measure of protection against financial fraud against yourself, should your information ever get exposed in a data breach like this one…

Incidents have been happening more frequently. They’ve been more sophisticated. They have also been more significant in terms of their impact, whether you’re talking about money or amounts, or the sensitivity of data that has been released.

And one of the things that school systems are doing now is also looking and asking questions of all of their vendors and third parties they do business with, like PowerSchool. There is certainly a trend right now that school systems are beginning to ask many more questions of their vendors and partners to ensure that they have strong cybersecurity in place, while school systems as well are shoring up their cybersecurity practices.”

O’Brien said Deel sent him $5,000 worth of Ethereum each month, with the promise that using crypto would not leave any record. He claimed he used a Blockchain.com wallet to receive the funds, converted them into cash, and moved the money to his bank account.

The information Deel asked for included internal messages, sales leads, and strategic plans. O’Brien said he was asked to search through Rippling’s internal systems, including Slack, Salesforce, and Google Drive. He said he was told to look up terms like “Tom brady”, “iran”, “tinybird”, and “sanctioned countries”.

Deel also appeared interested in Rippling’s potential customers, especially those who had booked product demos.

The case ended in March when a court order required O’Brien to hand over his devices. He said Deel’s lawyers contacted him that same night and discussed whether he should flee to Dubai with his family.

On March 28, O’Brien decided to confess by saying that he no longer wanted to protect Deel at the expense of his own family. While he admitted he was still afraid of the company’s influence, he said he wanted to take responsibility for his actions.

What you need to know

• The Garmin Vivoactive 6 is expected to arrive soon, based on information from Gadgets & Wearables and Fitness Tracker Test.
• Like the Vivoactive 5, it should have an aluminum bezel, two buttons, 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, all-systems GNSS, and music storage.
• It’ll allegedly sport the same Elevate v4 sensor as most last-gen Garmin watches, precluding any ECG support.
• It’s expected to ship in four colors — black, white, green, and pink — and cost about $300 like its predecessor.

Anyone eagerly awaiting the Garmin Vivoactive 6 shouldn’t have to wait much longer. After a four-year gap between the 2019 Vivoactive 4 and 2023 Vivoactive 5, Garmin will leap ahead next month with a 6th-gen model that’s pretty similar to the last version, based on leaked renders and specs from retailers.

Gadgets & Wearables first posted renders of the Garmin Vivoactive 6 on Saturday, before Fitness Tracker Test followed up with detailed specs and a list of new features coming to Garmin’s popular all-arounder — as well as a prediction that it’ll arrive before the end of April.

According to both sites’ information, the Garmin Vivoactive 6 is likely to ship in one 42mm case size with a 1.2-inch AMOLED touch display, like the Vivoactive 5. Also like its predecessor, it’ll have an aluminum bezel on top of Garmin’s typical fiber-reinforced polymer case materials.

Reportedly, it’ll ship in Black, Bone, Jasper Green, and Pink Dawn, as shown in the renders above. Compared to the Slate, Cream Gold, Metallic Navy, and Metallic Orchid of last generation, the Vivoactive 6 has its own personality. You can also see a more elevated top-right button in these renders, which could make it easier to press.

According to FTT’s Florian, the Vivoactive 6 will be slightly skinnier than the Vivoactive 5 (10.9mm vs. 11.1mm) but weigh the same 26g without the strap; it also has the “same battery life,” which would mean 11 days per charge or 5 with AOD active.

What’s more disappointing is that both sites suggest that the Vivoactive 6 won’t have ECG support, meaning it has the same Elevate v4 sensor as most Garmin watches from the past few years, besides the Venu 3, Fenix 8, and other expensive models like the Enduro 3.

Garmin didn’t give the Instinct 3 new health sensors, either, which we took as a warning sign at the time. The Vivoactive 6 will likely cost much less, and perhaps Garmin sees the Elevate v5 sensor as too “premium” for this lineup; but it’s a shame, as ECG and skin temp readings would absolutely fit this “mainstream” lineup and match better against other fitness watches.

Nor (allegedly) will the Vivoactive 6 have a barometric altimeter, one of our biggest complaints with the last model. Both sites suggest the Vivoactive 6 will add a greater running focus with running power, running dynamics, and PacePro, plus two new satellite systems — BeiDou and QZSS — for better all-systems GNSS tracking. But this just makes the lack of elevation tracking more noticeable.

In happier news, the Vivoactive 6 should get workout animations, something that fits well with the lineup’s target audience of indoor athletes. Of course, this would pair well with the new Garmin Connect+ subscription that’s generating controversy, thanks to its Live Workouts.

FTT says the Vivoactive 6 will get doubled music storage to 8GB for your Spotify or YouTube Music playlists, as well as a mysterious “smart alarm” that we haven’t seen on any Garmin watches yet. In theory, this would be similar to Fitbit’s smart alarm, checking for a light sleep stage before triggering an alarm within a certain window.

Overall, this feels like a fairly iterative update for the Vivoactive watch, assuming that these leaked specs are correct. At the same time, we do like the Vivoactive 5, and the Vivoactive 6 should take its role as the entry-level Garmin watch that we recommend to anyone new to the platform, if and when it arrives in April.

GPU mining might finally be back. Nvidia announced the release of the RTX 3000 series that feature a massive 50-80% performance over their RTX 2000 counterparts. Best part is, the price point is the same – the card is available on September 17, starting at $699 for the Founders Edition.

Nvidia leaked some hashrates for Ethereum (DaggerHashimoto) mining. The RTX series are based on the new Nvidia Ampere graphics architecture that features better raw performance and power efficiency.

Compared to the RTX 2080 Ti (54 MH/s top), the RTX 3080 outputs 75 MH/s with factory settings and up to 93 Mh/s when overclocked. My only concern is power consumption, with the 3080 having a 28% higher TDP than the 2080 on default settings, and up to 60% higher when overclocked.

From what we know so far, the RTX 3080 features higher hashrate, same price point, and roughly the same power efficiency as the 2080.

As usual, the Founder’s Edition is probably not the best model for mining. It features only two coolers. Personally, I will wait until MSI or Gigabyte release a version with three coolers.
