Good Morning, Asia. Here’s what’s making news in the markets:

Welcome to Asia Morning Briefing, a daily summary of top stories during U.S. hours and an overview of market moves and analysis. For a detailed overview of U.S. markets, see CoinDesk’s Crypto Daybook Americas.

Bitcoin’s price is holding near records, but the chain itself is quiet. Glassnode data shows transaction fees have collapsed back toward decade lows, even as BTC flirts with six figures.

In past cycles, fee spikes tracked bull markets as traders bid for blockspace. This year, the fee curve is flat while price rises, a clear sign that onchain demand is no longer driving the market.

(Glassnode)

(Glassnode)

A new report from Galaxy Research shows median daily fees have fallen more than 80% since April 2024, with as much as 15% of daily blocks now clearing at just 1 satoshi per vbyte. Nearly half of recent blocks are not full, signaling weak demand for blockspace and a dormant mempool.

This is a sharp contrast to prior bull cycles, where price rallies translated into congestion and fee spikes.

The data confirms a structural shift: spot ETFs and custodians now hold more than 1.3 million BTC, and coins parked in those wrappers rarely touch the chain again.

At the same time, retail activity that once clogged the Bitcoin blockchain has migrated to Solana, where memecoins and NFTs benefit from cheaper and faster execution. The result, Galaxy notes, is that the bitcoin price is being set by custodial inflows while the network’s onchain demand – once a proxy for price movement – has slowed down.

For miners, this dynamic is particularly punishing. With rewards halved to 3.125 BTC and fees contributing less than 1% of block revenue in July, profitability is under strain. That stress is pushing listed miners to diversify into AI and HPC hosting.

Read more: Bitcoin Mining Faces ‘Incredibly Difficult’ Market as Power Becomes the Real Currency

A report from earlier this year by Rittenhouse Research argues that Galaxy Digital’s move out of mining altogether could be the model for the sector.

This move has been applauded by the equity markets. While BTC is down more than 3% on-year, the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining ETF has gained nearly 22%. Investors are rewarding firms that have leaned into diversification rather than relying on block rewards alone.

Listed miners tell a similar story. Hive, Core Scientific, and TeraWulf all reported Q2 results padded by HPC and AI hosting revenues.

Those with no diversification, like Bitdeer and BitFuFu, remain deeply exposed to electricity costs, equipment depreciation, and a fee market that Galaxy warns in its report is “anything but robust.”

The juxtaposition is telling: Galaxy’s own research warns that the Bitcoin blockchain’s settlement role is stagnating, while Galaxy’s balance sheet is being repositioned for growth in AI data centers.

Onchain data makes the point: without organic demand for blockspace, fees can’t fund security. And if fees stay low, equity markets are painting a clear picture that mining sector’s best future returns may come from AI, not Bitcoin.

Market Movements

BTC: Bitcoin traded at $113,286.95, down 1.79%, after briefly plunging to a six-week low near $110,600, with the broader crypto market facing heavy liquidations and volatility.

ETH: Ether traded flat at $4,779 as Jerome Powell’s dovish Jackson Hole remarks boosted expectations of a September rate cut, with asset managers predicting new highs for bitcoin and an ETH breakout above $5,000 despite risks from treasury adoption and equity volatility.

Gold: Gold closed at $3,371 after Powell’s dovish Jackson Hole remarks boosted September rate-cut odds.

Nikkei 225: Asia-Pacific stocks climbed Monday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 up 1.08%, after Powell signaled potential Fed rate cuts in September during his Jackson Hole speech.

This single point of failure can kill web3’s dream of an open, decentralized internet https://earlybirdsinvest.com/this-single-point-of-failure-can-kill-web3s-dream-of-an-open-decentralized-internet/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/this-single-point-of-failure-can-kill-web3s-dream-of-an-open-decentralized-internet/#respond Sat, 26 Jul 2025 22:51:06 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/this-single-point-of-failure-can-kill-web3s-dream-of-an-open-decentralized-internet/

The following article is a guest post and opinion of Chris “Jinx” Jenkins, Head of Operations at Pocket Network.

Internet pioneer Tim Berners-Lee once dreamed of an open and accessible digital information system. His vision for the web — a virtual space where everyone had equitable opportunities to contribute, collaborate, share, and learn together — has shifted.

But the internet has moved in the opposite direction from this open garden. From single points of failure to censorship by sectors both public and private, it is now in the middle of a fight between messaging-obsessed political bodies and profit-hungry corporations, each seeking to control or monetize information flows.

Web3, powered by decentralized apps (DApps), promises to rekindle Berners-Lee’s dream of a permissionless space for free, open communication and innovation. Yet ironically, DApps today also rely heavily on centralized infrastructure or data sources. These single points of failure compromise the entire ecosystem’s security and integrity — as seen in many of the complaints around Solana.

Systems are only as secure as their weakest points. And to fulfill Web3’s ethos, DApps must adopt and implement genuinely open, decentralized, and verifiable infrastructure.

DApps Suffer from Concentrated Vulnerabilities

Most developers build the front end of DApps on a decentralized interface, but depend on centralized data infrastructure for backend support.

DApps largely run on centralized data hosting platforms and cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Although easily accessible, these platforms are susceptible to single-point failures and censorship, leading to global outages and downtime.

History is a witness to these failures. There are multiple examples where Infrastructure-as-a-Service platforms have faced disruptions, interrupting seamless DApp usage.

For instance, although MetaMask functions as a decentralized wallet, its endpoints run on centralized tech like Infura to access Ethereum. In 2022, when Infura blocked access after U.S. sanctions, MetaMask users temporarily couldn’t access their wallets from specific regions.

This is not an isolated incident. Infura clients have also faced interruptions in the past. Similarly, Solana and Polygon users faced outages due to the overloading of centralized RPCs during high network traffic.

DApps using centralized infrastructure to supply data are thus susceptible to downtime, information inaccuracies, usage gaps, and disconnected data flows. These incidents demonstrate the need to shift to decentralized infrastructure for data transferability and smooth accessibility without facing outages.

The Need for a Decentralized DApp Ecosystem

DApps without a decentralized stack are an oxymoron.

Instead of AWS, Google, or Azure, DApps must use open-source solutions like InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), Filecoin, or Arweave. These protocols provide a tamper-proof, distributed storage facility with high uptime and protection against random outages.

DApps running on decentralized infrastructure work with independent node operators. This helps distribute data queries across the network, eliminating single points of failure for unstoppable data availability.

Since individual nodes cannot block information flows, DApps run smoothly even when several nodes are offline. So the network always remains accessible without any downtime.

Decentralized infrastructure further removes the dependency on intermediaries who arbitrarily control data flows. Instead, DApps can connect with data, service providers, and users within an integrated, enmeshed open-source system.

Pocket Network unlocks open data accessibility so that any DApp can get the information it needs, without relying on centralized or singular entities. Pocket’s Shannon upgrade created the first truly permissionless Open API Network.

Decentralized social networks like BlueSky and the AT Protocol don’t depend on centralized RPCs. Rather, they work with decentralized RPCs to access open data. Similarly, DeFi protocols using Chainlink don’t need to depend on centralized APIs to source real-time on-chain price data.

A robust, genuinely decentralized tech stack is critical for DApps to build a digital ecosystem without single points of failure, paving the way to return to Berners-Lee’s vision of a globally accessible network.

Towards Berners-Lee’s Vision of an Open Internet

Tim didn’t envision a society where a few megacorporations build walled gardens with asymmetrical relationships between users and companies. He wanted open communication in the digital world without any powerful intermediaries controlling information exchange.

This vision is aligned with Satoshi Nakamoto’s idea of a decentralized, peer-to-peer exchange system. And although crypto now leans toward a casino-style gambling circus, that was not how Nakamoto and the cypherpunk community imagined it to be.

That said, Web3 innovators are actively building the infrastructure necessary to bring Tim and Satoshi’s vision to fruition. Because an open digital world with equitable accessibility is a must-have, not a nice-to-have.

Decentralized infrastructure protocols for open-source data are rapidly emerging as the new frontier for seamless data accessibility to train AI models and support cross-chain DApp usage. With a $350 billion open data market, it’s critical to wrest control away from centralized providers and distribute it among decentralized operators.

To thrive, crypto, AI, and other emerging tech must reject Web2’s business model and embrace the internet’s OG vision, now enshrined in the Web3 paradigm. Moving toward a decentralized infrastructure that doesn’t suffer from single points of failure is crucial to building a resilient and reliable internet.

Yuga moves to kill ApeCoin DAO, transfer $168M in assets to new entity https://earlybirdsinvest.com/yuga-moves-to-kill-apecoin-dao-transfer-168m-in-assets-to-new-entity/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/yuga-moves-to-kill-apecoin-dao-transfer-168m-in-assets-to-new-entity/#respond Fri, 06 Jun 2025 15:20:29 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/yuga-moves-to-kill-apecoin-dao-transfer-168m-in-assets-to-new-entity/

Yuga Labs has proposed dissolving the ApeCoin DAO and replacing it with a new governing body, ApeCo. This would mark a decisive shift in the management structure of one of Web3’s most recognizable token communities.

Filed as an AIP proposal on June 5, the plan would sunset the DAO and transfer all major assets, including treasury funds, IP rights, smart contracts, and administrative operations, to a newly formed corporate entity led by Yuga.

The proposal arrives amid growing dissatisfaction with the DAO’s performance. Greg Solano, co-founder of Yuga Labs, described the organization as having become “sluggish, noisy and often unserious,” declaring “it’s time for ApeCoin to sunset the DAO and get back to winning.”

In a post on X, Solano argued that “people want to kill the ApeCoin DAO” and called for a “leaner, faster org to take the reins.”

The envisioned transition would entail migrating the DAO’s assets, which include approximately 169 million APE tokens currently valued at over $168 million, into ApeCo’s control. If approved, ApeCo would assume full responsibility for managing the grant program, directing ApeChain development, and overseeing key brand initiatives associated with the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem.

ApeCoin Treasury (Source: ApeCoinDAO)
ApeCoin Treasury (Source: ApeCoinDAO)

ApeCoin DAO was launched in March 2022 to steward the community-driven evolution of the Ape ecosystem through decentralized governance. However, the DAO’s performance has drawn mounting criticism from core stakeholders, including Yuga, particularly around low voter engagement and operational stagnation.

The ApeCo proposal builds on an earlier governance revamp approved in January through AIP-582, which moved ApeCoin governance on-chain via ApeChain with 93% support.

That measure shifted the bulk of the treasury into the ApeChain ecosystem, but the new proposal effectively renders that effort moot by dissolving the DAO entirely and centralizing governance under a new legal entity.

Apes united?

Community response has mainly been supportive in the early stages, with most forum comments indicating approval. Some dissenting voices remain, including DAO contributor Lanzer, who rejected the claim that the DAO has failed and warned of reputational damage from dissolving the structure altogether.

If enacted, this would constitute one of the most sweeping rollbacks of a DAO to founder-led control in recent crypto history. The implications extend beyond the Ape ecosystem, raising renewed scrutiny on the long-term viability of token-holder governance in Web3.

The move also comes on the heels of the SEC’s decision in March to close its investigation into Yuga’s NFT offerings without pressing charges, removing one regulatory overhang as the company reasserts control over its ecosystem.

The AIP remains in the Idea stage and will require full approval before implementation through the DAO voting process. Large token holders, including major venture backers and ecosystem partners, retain the ability to amend or reject the proposal.

Should it pass, the operational logistics of transitioning smart contract ownership, treasury management, and grant disbursements will become immediate focal points.

Solano’s framing of the DAO’s shortcomings illustrates the broader sentiment that, while aspirational, decentralized governance may struggle to support fast-moving brand and protocol development.

ApeCo, as proposed, would operate with a smaller, professionalized structure focused on the execution and strategic growth of the Ape ecosystem’s assets, including Otherside and ApeChain.

The transition would mark a foundational shift in how one of crypto’s most prominent communities governs its capital and IP.

Bad tokenomics kill good projects (here’s how to improve them) https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bad-tokenomics-kill-good-projects-heres-how-to-improve-them/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bad-tokenomics-kill-good-projects-heres-how-to-improve-them/#respond Sat, 24 May 2025 17:04:03 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bad-tokenomics-kill-good-projects-heres-how-to-improve-them/

The following is a guest post and opinion of Arthur Iinuma, Principal consultant and Founder of Iinuma.io.

While good tokenomics cannot save unsound projects, even the most promising network launches can fail from poor token design.

Spectacular flameouts like Terra LUNA and Celsius expose the dangers of financial sleight-of-hand—algorithmic stablecoins and yield schemes masquerading as innovation. But there are many more otherwise high-potential projects committing economic suicide through easily avoidable mistakes.

Blue-chip projects with genuine technical merit and legitimate use cases, like Aptos, have watched billions in market cap evaporate overnight due to mismanaged token unlocks and poor communication. It’s critical for crypto founders to increase their emphasis on token design so great projects can build economic foundations as strong as their technical ones.

Fatal Flaws in Token Design

The biggest tokenomics mistakes I see in otherwise solid projects are:

Large Valuation Gaps

While it is customary for projects to offer early investors lower priced tokens compared to later rounds, founders should be careful in allowing wide pricing spreads between these early rounds and public buyers.  This may be easier said than done as shrewd investors demand lower prices against the threat of withholding investment.

However, an investor with a low entry price in comparison to a later round essentially guarantees their upside even at prices lower than the cost basis of a public buyer.  This means that a loss for buyers in later rounds may still result in gains for the earliest token holders – creating an unfair imbalance in the project’s token economy.

Poor Vesting Schedule

Far too many projects turn their public buyers into exit liquidity for early investors and insiders. Nothing destroys community faster than watching early insiders dump tokens while public buyers hold withering bags.

The timing of unlocks are important.  While a long vesting and lockup schedule seems good for value appreciation, they almost always guarantee predictable sell pressure as investors who’ve been forced to hold for too long scramble to unload. Fast unlocks may provide rapid price discovery and expand the token holder base, but they also allow whales to dump, creating “red candles” and evaporating public confidence.

Overselling by Founders

Sometimes the prospect of turning recently minted digital tokens into real value is too tempting for the founders that created them.  I’ve watched projects go from great ideas to publicly traded at over a billion USD in valuation, minting multi-millionaire founders in the process.  Even the most disciplined of them are tempted to sell their holdings and trade their project tokens for cash.

Take for instance Mantra, which suddenly lost 92% of its value in just 90 minutes.  Despite statements by the CEO to the contrary, blockchain analysts were quick to point out substantial insider movements of at least USD 227 million onto exchanges, suggesting an insider dump.

High Listing Valuation

Founders are often enticed to list at larger valuations as they make for bigger headlines, raised optics and build hype.  Founders are not entirely at fault, as even Binance has been known to push out unusually high listing valuations, with projects like Hamster Kombat (HMSTR) listing at over USD 700 million in market cap, and Notcoin listing at a staggering USD 1 billion at launch.

But overvalued project listings create a lot of “air” underneath them, and when everyone is in the money, it’s almost a guaranteed race to the bottom and token holders are quick to cash out to get more favorable pricing than the person next to them.  A high starting valuation also means the prospect of public buyers earning a multiple on their investment is slimmer, thinning out secondary market demand.  When you have a lot of holders selling and nobody to buy, the result is an eventual death spiral.

While projects like Hamster Kombat set industry engagement records, and listed on the top exchanges in the world, its overvalue at listing resulted in a 87% price decline to its recorded all-time-low.

What Actually Works in Tokenomics

BTC and ETH hold the top market cap positions for good reason. Beyond being early, they’ve demonstrated several core principles that separate sustainable token models from hollow speculation vehicles.

Genuine Scarcity

Bitcoin’s 21 million fixed supply cap isn’t powerful just because it’s scarce—it’s powerful because the market believes with absolute certainty that this limit won’t change.

Deep Product Integration

The fundamental question every project should answer honestly: Could your product function without a token? If yes, you’re likely forcing tokenization where it doesn’t belong.

Projects like Filecoin embody this principle well—their token is essential to the network’s storage marketplace function, making it nearly impossible to separate the product from its token. By contrast, projects that bolt on tokens as afterthoughts typically see their tokens wither in value over time.

Selling Restrictions

Projects should structure valuations across each sale round with reduced spread and design a lockup schedule that prevents lower-priced buyers from “dumping” their tokens on participants in later rounds.  Creating a layered vesting schedule that restricts early sales for buyers with a low entry point while allowing for later-round participants to de-risk first offers a reasonable balance of upside for early buyers and price protection for later buyers.

Use of Audited Claim Contracts

Well-structured token economics goes beyond what is written in a document.  Projects should take a step further and ensure their tokens are custodied by a third-party audited, irrevocable smart contract guaranteeing transparency and compliance by all parties.

Realistic Valuation & Supply Management

Lower initial valuations might feel like leaving money on the table, but they create room for meaningful appreciation. Projects launching at already-inflated valuations leave little upside for new participants, killing momentum and community growth.

A low total supply allows for better price control and market responsiveness. It imbues tokens with more significance, making manipulation more difficult and price movements more meaningful.

Active Token Management

Good tokenomics isn’t set-and-forget—it requires ongoing stewardship. Here are some best practices:

  1. Strategic supply management: Increase circulating supply only during rising markets. This prevents dumping additional tokens into already weak markets.
  2. Buyback programs: Implement token repurchases when sell pressure is high to stabilize the price and signal project commitment to a high token valuation.
  3. Controlled liquidation: Require large investors to use market makers when selling significant positions to prevent large price impacts from sudden dumps.

Building To Last

The most successful projects approach tokenomics as an extension of product design rather than exclusively an exercise of financial engineering.

Thoughtful tokenomics are a signal to the market of a thoughtful product and team. Your token is ultimately your best marketing tool—it rewards loyalty and financially aligns users.

Dust Settles Over Liberation Day: Will Trump Trade War Kill The Bull Run? https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dust-settles-over-liberation-day-will-trump-trade-war-kill-the-bull-run/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dust-settles-over-liberation-day-will-trump-trade-war-kill-the-bull-run/#respond Fri, 04 Apr 2025 16:33:20 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dust-settles-over-liberation-day-will-trump-trade-war-kill-the-bull-run/

The dust is settling after President Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement, during which he signed an executive order imposing mutual tariffs on global trade partners. The Trump tariffs news heated debates everywhere on the trade war and its power to disrupt the ongoing financial market bull run.

Yesterday, Trump declared “Liberation Day,” unveiling a 10% baseline tariff on all imports, with higher rates of 34% in China and 20% in the EU.

These tariffs aim to address trade imbalances, but markets are rattling as a consequence. The bull run, which was then in a euphoric phase before Trump’s inauguration, is now facing headwinds. Trump and his crypto regulation, once a market booster, are now under scrutiny as tariffs ripple outward.

And Trump Trade War Begins on Liberation Day

US trading partners, including the EU and China, have also promised retaliation, escalating tensions. Stock markets dipped, with the US dollar hitting a six-month low. As a result, crypto markets saw a $341 billion wipeout in 24 hours.

Economists warn that these tariffs will stir inflation, raising costs for US consumers and businesses reliant on imports. The US manufacturing industry may see a domestic boost, as Trump intends, but supply chain disruptions are at risk. Big Tech firms like Apple and Nvidia are vowing on US investments after Trump signed his executive order, yet the market sentiment remains cautious amid this trade war policy shift.

The bull run, a hallmark of recent economic growth, now teeters on uncertainty. The tariffs’ scale could echo the 1930s Smoot-Hawley fallout, which deepened a global downturn.

While Trump might open to negotiation, a prolonged trade war conflict is predicted, threatening market gains and investor confidence.

dropped from $88,000 to $83,000 post-announcement, with trading volume spiking to over 46%. Even though Trump tariffs don’t directly target crypto assets, the economic instability they trigger can dampen crypto growth, which usually goes side by side with the US stock market.

Businesses are now bracing for impact; US chipmakers and retailers face higher input costs, while oil and gas firms report immediate price hikes on materials. Exemptions for pharmaceuticals and copper offer some relief, but the 25% auto tariff adds pressure on an already strained sector. This automobile sector is expected to hit consumers the hardest.

Canada and Mexico dodged the reciprocal tariffs but not the 25% duties on goods. India is facing a 26% rate, while Australia’s PM called the 10% tariff illogical.

Did Trump just put a tariff on ETH or something?

— Lady of Crypto (@LadyofCrypto1) April 2, 2025

Eventually, the EU’s planned countermeasures signal a tit-for-tat escalation, complicating the Trump global trade war.

Some argue that the Trump trade war will force fairer trade terms and boost the US economy. Others see it as a gamble that might choke the bull run, with collateral damage to Trump’s crypto momentum. Data also showing 70% of traders expect a crypto bottom by June if trade fears persist.

As “Liberation Day” tariffs aim to reclaim economic destiny, per Trump’s vision, their cost is unfolding in real-time.

But remember, whatever goes down will go up, HODL.

Trump Liberation Day announcement on tariffs sparked a debate on a trade war and its power, which could disturb the crypto bull run.

The switch from Google Assistant to Gemini might kill Nest speakers and displays https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-switch-from-google-assistant-to-gemini-might-kill-nest-speakers-and-displays/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-switch-from-google-assistant-to-gemini-might-kill-nest-speakers-and-displays/#respond Fri, 21 Mar 2025 07:04:36 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-switch-from-google-assistant-to-gemini-might-kill-nest-speakers-and-displays/

Google Home and Nest speakers and displays as we know them may be doomed if the company’s recent Google Assistant deprecations are any indication. Google Assistant is rapidly losing features as Google puts more time and effort into Gemini, its AI-based chatbot and assistant. Just this week, Google announced plans to remove seven more features from Google Assistant in the future, following up the 18 features that were lost in early 2024.

As such, it’s not an understatement to call the Google Assistant a shell of its former self. That isn’t as much of an issue on smartphones and tablets, as Gemini serves as a better virtual assistant in many cases. When Gemini falls short, Android phones and tablets can take advantage of Assistant extensions to fill the gap. In fact, rumors point to Gemini replacing the Google Assistant on smartwatches via a future Wear OS update, too.

There’s just one problem — Gemini can’t replace the Google Assistant on the smart home devices that need it most. Google hasn’t refreshed its smart displays, including the second-generation Nest Hub and the Nest Hub Max, since 2021. It hasn’t updated the Google Nest Mini smart speaker since 2019. That reality means that the affordable and aging Nest smart speakers and displays could be left without critical Assistant features and unable to run Gemini effectively.

(Image credit: Andrew Myrick / Android Central)

Google quietly set a precedent for how it plans to get Gemini on smart home products last year, and it’s bad news for fans of Nest hardware. The company completely killed the affordable Chromecast lineup in favor of the $100 Google TV Streamer, which will soon get Gemini Live and other AI features.

With Google seemingly winding down Assistant and putting a greater focus on Gemini, I’m worried that the Nest lineup could share a similar fate. The company could shift toward more expensive (and powerful) smart home controllers, like the Pixel Tablet, which can better handle Gemini. That would be a mistake because Google Assistant is the perfect piece of software to run on affordable and lightweight smart home products.

Google Nest speakers and displays are borderline useless without Assistant features

Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) photo library

Due to the age of Google Nest speakers and displays, they’re starting to slow down, and features are beginning not to work as expected. In some instances, the platform has felt like an afterthought. Earlier this year, a bug caused Nest devices to fail to answer basic requests, and it took weeks for users to get a fix.

On top of that, Google is actively killing key Google Assistant features. Aside from the 18 features axed last year, the company recently updated its support document with seven new deprecations. For instance, you won’t be able to change photo frame settings or ambient screen settings with your voice anymore. While you can still do this manually on your Nest display, that kind of defeats the point of having a voice-equipped smart screen.

    Nest Mini

Some of the more egregious removals include the ability to get daily updates from your Google Assistant, such as requests like “Send me the weather every day.” You also won’t be able to favorite, share, or use your voice to ask about photos that were taken. Put simply, Nest hardware doesn’t just lack new features — it’s also consistently losing basic functionality and features.

It’s understandable that Google doesn’t want to spread itself too thin by working on Assistant and Gemini simultaneously, but it should consider all of the products in its portfolio. While Pixel phones and tablets are getting better by the day with new Gemini features, Nest speakers and displays are seemingly getting worse by the day.

Android Central reached out to Google regarding its plans for current and future Nest devices, as well as the state of Google Assistant, but the company did not get back to us in time for publication.

Gemini won’t solve the problem, it’ll make it worse

Nest Hub Max next to Pixel Tablet on countertop

(Image credit: Andrew Myrick / Android Central)

If the option to switch to Gemini was available today for Nest hardware, Google’s recent Assistant feature removals would be defensible. However, it isn’t, and I’m skeptical that Gemini is the solution to this problem. It’s unlikely that a Gemini-based assistant could run on older Nest speakers and displays, leaving them stuck with a Google Assistant bleeding basic features.

The transition to Gemini might kill Nest smart home products as we know them. Existing hardware would almost certainly become less useful, as the Google Assistant has lost 25 features since the start of 2024. New hardware, if released, would probably be priced higher than current Nest speakers and displays to accommodate AI processing demands.

Historically, the great thing about the Google Nest family of products was that you could outfit your entire home with speakers, cameras, and displays without breaking the bank. A Nest Mini speaker costs $50 at retail, and a Nest Hub display costs $100 at retail.

The shiny Google Nest Learning Thermostat (Gen 4)

(Image credit: Nicholas Sutrich / Android Central)

Google needs to upgrade Nest smart speakers and displays, like it upgraded the Nest Learning Thermostat and created the Google TV Streamer. Many of the devices in the Nest lineup are half a decade old, or older.

With that being said, it should be careful about creating new Nest speakers and displays that are more premium, more powerful, and more pricey. If the future of Nest hardware is Gemini-powered products sold at a premium price, the brand’s identity would be drastically changed.

WTF?! It’s tempting to consider getting revenge on a company for firing you. Creating a kill switch that crashes systems and locks thousands of employees out of their accounts, for example, might sound like sweet justice, but a developer who implemented this plan has been convicted of criminal sabotage and faces up to a decade in prison.

In November 2007, Houston resident Davis Lu started working for power management company Eaton Corporation. His work life went well until 2018, when a company-wide corporate realignment saw his role downsized. The change included his responsibilities being reduced and his access to the firm’s computer systems limited.

Based on the DoJ’s account, this spooked Lu into worrying that the company could eventually let him go. So, he decided to install malware onto the firm’s systems that would activate if he were ever fired.

The code he added created infinite loops (code designed to exhaust Java threads by repeatedly creating new threads without proper termination and resulting in server crashes or hangs), deleted coworker profile files, and implemented a “kill switch” that would lock out all users if his credentials in the company’s active directory were disabled.

The kill switch code he added was named “IsDLEnabledinAD,” an abbreviation for “Is Davis Lu enabled in Active Directory.” As the name suggests, it checked that Lu’s account was enabled in the company’s Active Directory. If it was, nothing happened.

On September 9, 2019, Lu’s employment was terminated, setting off the kill switch he had created for such an event. Cleveland.com reports that it caused the company hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses and impacted thousands of users globally – Eaton’s global headquarters are in Dublin, Ireland. Lu’s defense attorneys argued that the incident cost the company less than $5,000.

Lu also encrypted the data on his company-issued laptop the day he was instructed to turn off the device and return it. His internet search history revealed he had researched methods to escalate privileges, hide processes, and rapidly delete files. Prosecutors say that after he was fired, Lu also tried to find ways of stopping his co-workers from fixing the issues he caused.

Lu was charged by federal prosecutors in 2021. Following a six-day trial, he was found guilty of one count of causing intentional damage to protected computers, a charge that carries a maximum of 10 years in prison. A sentencing date has not been set.

“Sadly, Davis Lu used his education, experience, and skill to purposely harm and hinder not only his employer and their ability to safely conduct business, but also stifle thousands of users worldwide,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Greg Nelsen.

    Kill switch

A software developer has been found guilty of sabotaging his ex-employer’s systems by running custom malware and installing a “kill switch” after being demoted at the company.

Davis Lu, 55, of Houston, was a software developer for an Ohio company, reportedly Eaton Corp, from November 2007 to October 2019.

Eaton Corporation is a global power management company that provides electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical solutions for various industries.

Following a corporate restructuring in 2018, Lu lost responsibilities at his job and was found guilty of sabotaging his employer’s computer systems and network with custom malware and kill switches.

The malicious activities included code that ran in an “infinite loop,” exhausting a production server’s resources and eventually causing the system to crash and prevent user logins. These infinite loops were designed to exhaust Java threads by repeatedly generating new threads without proper termination.

According to Lu’s indictment, Lu also deleted coworker’s user profiles and implemented a “kill switch” that would lock out all users if his account in the company’s Windows active directory was disabled. The “kill switch” code, named “IsDLEnabledinAD,” was an abbreviation of “Is Davis Lu enabled in Active Directory.”

This kill switch was automatically triggered when Lu was terminated on September 9, 2019, causing thousands of employees to lose access to systems.

On the day he was directed to return his company laptop, Lu reportedly deleted encrypted data.

The DOJ says internet search queries also revealed that Lu had been researching ways to elevate privileges, hide processes, and quickly delete files.

The Department of Justice says that Lu’s activities and system disruption cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A jury convicted Lu of causing intentional damage to protected computers, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. A sentencing date has not been set.

US Senate passes resolution to kill ‘unworkable’ IRS DeFi broker rule https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-senate-passes-resolution-to-kill-unworkable-irs-defi-broker-rule/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-senate-passes-resolution-to-kill-unworkable-irs-defi-broker-rule/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2025 03:31:31 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-senate-passes-resolution-to-kill-unworkable-irs-defi-broker-rule/

The US Senate has passed a resolution to repeal a Biden-era rule that would require decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols to report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The Senate voted 70 to 27 on March 4 to approve a motion to repeal the rule that would expand existing IRS reporting requirements to include decentralized exchanges and require brokers to disclose gross proceeds from crypto sales, including information regarding taxpayers involved in the transactions.

The resolution now moves to the House, where it will need to be passed before being sent to President Donald Trump. The White House’s AI and crypto czar David Sacks has said Trump supports killing the rule.

It follows a similar effort by House lawmakers, who advanced a resolution to repeal the rule on Feb. 26, which has yet to be voted on.

Eli Cohen, general counsel of the RWA tokenizing platform Centrifuge, said in a statement to Cointelegraph that the rule never made “any sense and was unworkable in practice.”

Still, given that it never went into force, all the requirements haven’t changed, he added.

“It just means that the taxpayer needs to report directly to the IRS without an intermediary taking on this obligation,” Cohen said.

Kristin Smith, CEO of the crypto advocacy group The Blockchain Association, said in a March 4 post on X that it was a big day for “DeFi – and the US crypto industry.”

“The effort to repeal this rule should be seen as part of a broader move to keep crypto in the US,” she said.

“DeFi is an American strategic strength, and today’s action helps ensure it will continue to develop on home soil,” Smith added.

Smith said this is the most pro-crypto Congress to date, and the resolution passing through the Senate was the first time the sentiment had been converted into action.

“This bodes well for the efforts to design and pass stablecoin and market structure legislation,” Smith said.

Tether’s competitors are exerting increasingly more pressure to push the world’s largest stablecoin issuer out of the crypto market, including political pressure aimed at reducing the firm’s leading market share.

In the wider crypto markets, analysts are suggesting that most cryptocurrencies won’t see a widespread “altcoin season” rally in 2025, and only select tokens with sustainable investor interest and revenue-generating models will be able to outperform the rest of the tokens.

Paolo Ardoino: Competitors and politicians intend to “kill Tether”

Tether’s competitors are working to push the world’s largest stablecoin issuer out of the crypto market, according to the company’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino.

Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin, USDt (USDT), has a market capitalization of more than $142 billion — over twice as large as Circle’s USD Coin’s (USDC) $56 billion, according to Cointelegraph data.

However, the stablecoin issuer faces mounting pressure from competing firms and politicians, Ardoino said in a Feb. 25 X post.

“While our competitors’ business model should be to build a better product and even bigger distribution network, their real intent is ‘Kill Tether.’ Every single business or political meeting that they have culminates with this intent.”

“I’ll leave it to you to define a competitor trying to use lawfare to kill an opponent, instead of focusing on better products,” Ardoino added.

Tether will continue focusing on its mission to promote global financial inclusion, particularly in underdeveloped economies, Ardoino said, noting that USDT is used by more than 400 million people and gains 35 million new wallets each quarter.

Ardoino’s comments followed Tether’s exclusion from the list of 10 firms approved to issue stablecoins under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework.

Altseason 2025: “Most altcoins won’t make it,” CryptoQuant CEO says

Most cryptocurrencies beyond Bitcoin and Ether may not experience a widespread “altcoin season” rally in 2025, but projects with strong fundamentals and revenue-generating models could outperform the broader market, according to Ki Young Ju, the founder and CEO of CryptoQuant.

“Most altcoins won’t make it” during the 2025 market cycle, Ju wrote in a Feb. 25 X post.

Cryptocurrencies with potential exchange-traded fund (ETF) approvals, robust revenue-generating models and sustained investor attention may outperform the rest of the market, Ju said. Still, “The era of everything pumping is over,” he added.

Ju’s outlook comes as 24% of the 200 largest cryptocurrencies have fallen to their lowest levels in more than a year, sparking speculation about possible market capitulation.

The current downturn may signal an incoming market capitulation, according to Juan Pellicer, senior research analyst at crypto intelligence platform IntoTheBlock.

“The recent market correction, with significant liquidations (especially in assets like Solana) and a drop in total crypto market cap to $3.13 trillion, points toward possible capitulation as overleveraged positions are flushed out,” Pellicer told Cointelegraph.

Bybit hacker launders $335M as funds continue to move

The hacker behind the $1.4 billion Bybit exploit has laundered more than $335 million in digital assets, with investigators continuing to track the movement of stolen funds.

Crypto investor sentiment was hit by the largest hack in crypto history on Feb. 21, when Bybit lost over $1.4 billion in liquid-staked Ether (STETH), Mantle Staked ETH (mETH) and other digital assets.

Onchain data shows that the hacker has moved 45,900 Ether (ETH) — worth about $113 million — in the past 24 hours, bringing the total amount laundered to more than 135,000 ETH, valued at $335 million.

That left the hacker with about 363,900 ETH, worth around $900 million, according to pseudonymous blockchain analyst EmberCN.

US lawmakers advance resolution to repeal “unfair” crypto tax rule

US lawmakers in the House of Representatives have advanced a resolution to repeal the “DeFi broker rule,” which requires brokers to report digital asset transactions to the Internal Revenue Service.

Set to take effect in 2027, the IRS broker regulation was approved on Dec. 5 and would expand existing reporting requirements to include decentralized exchanges. It would require brokers to disclose gross proceeds from sales of cryptocurrencies, including information regarding the taxpayers involved in the transactions.

During its Feb. 26 committee markup, the House Ways and Means Committee, a key group within the House that deals with financial issues, voted 26 to 16 to advance the resolution.

MetaMask adds fiat off-ramp for 10 blockchains to improve crypto accessibility

Ethereum-based cryptocurrency wallet MetaMask is expanding its fiat off-ramp services to support 10 additional blockchain networks. The move, in partnership with payments provider Transak, is aimed at simplifying the process of converting digital assets into traditional currency.

MetaMask users were previously forced to swap assets into Ether (ETH) tokens before being able to convert them into fiat money, adding extra steps and transaction fees.

However, as part of MetaMask’s ongoing partnership with Transak, the wallet will add support to 10 new networks: the Arbitrum mainnet, Avalanche C-Chain mainnet, Base, BNB Chain, Celo, Fantom, Moonbeam, Moonriver, Optimism and Polygon.

The first four tokens to receive immediate off-ramping support include ETH on Ethereum, ETH on Optimisim, BNB (BNB) and the Polygon (POL) token. Support for the additional six networks will be gradually rolled out.

“By expanding off-ramping capabilities with Transak, MetaMask is removing barriers between crypto and traditional currency, allowing users to convert a broader range of tokens directly to cash,” said Lorenzo Santos, senior product manager at Consensys.
