A violent attack in central Paris has left a man without a hard drive containing €2 million worth of Bitcoin.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday evening, August 5, is the latest in a growing pattern of crypto-related crimes in France.

Details Of The Attack

According to local media reports, the incident began at around 7:15 p.m. at the Peninsula Hotel, a luxury establishment located on Avenue Kléber in Paris’s 16th arrondissement. Hotel staff alerted the police after witnessing five unknown men approach one of their guests and demand, “Give us 400,000 euros, and it’s over.” The victim was then forcibly taken from the hotel to an area near the Arc de Triomphe, where he was physically assaulted.

Officers from the anti-crime brigade quickly responded and arrested all five suspects in the 8th arrondissement. Initial investigations revealed that the group may be connected to a nearby nightclub, where the victim allegedly owed €40,000. Police believes the suspects were attempting to collect that debt by force.

The victim was briefly interviewed by authorities and said he had been beaten and threatened. He reported that the attackers took his iPhone 13 Pro Max and a hard drive containing Bitcoin worth around €2 million. He added that a previous incident had occurred the week before, during which the same individuals had displayed a weapon.

The suspects were taken into custody at the First District Police headquarters for extortion. During the night, investigators from the Anti-Banditism Brigade took over the case. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that five people were in custody and that investigations and hearings are ongoing.

This isn’t the first time Paris has made the headlines for crypto-related crime. The country has endured a series of violent kidnappings targeting individuals in the industry. The most recent case happened in May and involved a failed attempt by a masked gang to abduct relatives of the co-founder of French Bitcoin exchange Paynium. Twenty five suspects were later indicted for the failed abduction.

Another incident saw the father of a crypto millionaire being hijacked while walking their dog. David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, and his wife were also taken from their home in France in January, with French special forces rescuing the couple after a 58-hour ordeal. The operation led to multiple arrests, including individuals with prior crypto-related convictions. Both cases involved a ransom demand, with the victims being released with missing fingers.

Tim Heath, an Australian crypto investor, fought off a kidnapping attempt in Estonia after being attacked inside his apartment building, according to a July 2 report by Eesti Ekspress.

According to prosecutors, a group of seven had followed Heath for days and even placed a tracker on his car. Two men, dressed as painters, approached him in the stairwell and tried to drag him into a waiting van.

One of the attackers, identified as Allahverdi Allahverdiyev, covered Heath’s mouth to stop him from shouting. Heath bit through the man’s finger during the struggle and managed to run back into his apartment. He reportedly lost a tooth in the process.

Investigators said the attackers planned to take Heath to a rented sauna and force him to hand over his crypto holdings. The group is accused of entering Estonia using fake Georgian passports.

Before the attack, they bought painter uniforms and tools to disguise themselves as workers. The plan also involved a hacker to help transfer the digital assets.

Allahverdiyev claimed he pretended to go along with the plan but later told others to call it off, despite being promised €100,000. Another suspect, Georgian citizen Ilgar Mamedov, said he was only passing through Estonia. The alleged leader of the group, Najaf Najafli, and two others remain at large.

After the incident, Heath received a message on Telegram that included photos of his home and demanded 30 Bitcoin

A 23-year-old man was reportedly kidnapped in Maisons-Alfort, a suburb of Paris, in what marks the latest in a growing number of violent incidents linked to cryptocurrency.

According to a Thursday report by Le Parisien, the victim was abducted earlier this week and held for several hours as his captors demanded access to both cash and his Ledger wallet.

The attackers reportedly targeted the victim and his partner, forcing them into a situation that French police are now investigating as kidnapping and unlawful confinement by an organized gang.

Paris Suburb Sees Another Crypto-Linked Kidnapping as Attacks Escalate

The incident began on Tuesday morning when the young couple left their home by car. They had set out on errands. When the driver couldn’t find parking, his partner got out while he circled the neighborhood.

Minutes later, she received a message from her partner claiming he had an urgent work issue.

Unaware of the real situation, she returned home. That’s when the event quickly escalated.

Her phone rang. It was a video call. On the screen wasn’t her partner, but another man.

The person on the call demanded that she gather €5,000 in cash and a Ledger hardware wallet and place them in a bag.

“Violence was used to make him talk,” a source told Le Parisien, indicating the kidnappers had knowledge of the man’s crypto holdings.

The woman, following the instructions, waited outside her home with the bag. A third person arrived and collected it.

By 5 p.m., the victim called his partner. He had been released in the nearby town of Créteil and was on his way back. French authorities have not disclosed any details about the man’s identity or the exact amount of crypto involved.

Police from Val-de-Marne are now handling the case. A source confirmed that the woman has been handed over to the judicial police.

“This is a sensitive case,” a police official said. The Anti-Banditism Brigade has reportedly made several arrests in connection with a series of recent kidnappings targeting crypto holders.

Tuesday’s attack is the tenth such case to surface in France in recent months, raising alarm among local crypto users and law enforcement.

Investigators believe the victim was carefully selected and that the perpetrators had detailed information about his assets and routines.

Surge in Violent Crypto Kidnappings Sparks Security Concerns Across Europe and Beyond

The recent wrench attack in a Paris suburb is just the latest in a chilling trend of violent crimes targeting crypto holders in 2025.

According to data compiled by Bitcoin security advocate Jameson Lopp, at least 32 wrench attacks have occurred globally this year, nearly one-third in France alone, putting 2025 on track to surpass the previous record of 36 incidents in 2021.

The assaults are becoming more brutal and calculated. Early this month, a crypto influencer in Essonne was kidnapped and beaten after attackers demanded €50,000 in crypto. They released him after discovering his wallet was nearly empty.

In January, David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, and his wife were kidnapped in rural France. Balland also had a finger cut off as part of a ransom attempt. Twelve suspects were later arrested.

In one of the most harrowing cases this year, the father of a young poker player-turned-crypto trader was abducted by men posing as delivery workers. The kidnappers demanded up to €7 million and sent a video of the victim’s finger being severed. He was later rescued by police in a dramatic operation.

Other attacks have similarly targeted families of crypto executives. In May, Pierre Noizat, CEO of Paymium, narrowly avoided tragedy when a group attempted to kidnap his daughter and grandson.

That same month, authorities charged 25 suspects linked to a broader kidnapping ring across Paris.

The violence hasn’t been confined to France. In the U.S., victims in New York and Las Vegas were kidnapped at gunpoint, one of them was driven over 70 miles into the Arizona desert by assailants seeking access to his wallet.

Security experts say the increase in ransom demands, mutilation, and family targeting reflects a new phase in crypto-related crime.

Private firms like Amsterdam-based Infinite Risks International report a surge in demand from crypto executives seeking 24/7 protection.

William Duplessie and John Woeltz, charged in New York for allegedly kidnapping a man to steal his Bitcoin

, have pleaded not guilty.

According to a report by Associated Press on June 12, their lawyers told the court that the alleged victim was not being held against his will and was seen smiling, laughing, and using drugs during the time he claimed to be in danger.

Duplessie and Woeltz appeared in a New York courtroom on June 11. Their legal teams said video clips showed the victim walking around New York and looking relaxed. They argued that it did not match the claim that he was being held captive and tortured.

Prosecutors pushed back on the defense’s claims. Assistant District Attorney Sarah Khan stated that the videos were shared in an attempt to create a false version of what happened. She said the goal was to make it seem like the man was free to leave, even though the full situation was different.

Authorities said they found photos of the victim with a gun to his head and another showing him being set on fire. They also recovered weapons, including a chainsaw and a loaded pistol, from the scene. They also stated that there may be two more individuals who were held by the same suspects in other locations.

Both Duplessie and Woeltz are facing serious charges, including first-degree kidnapping and assault. If found guilty, they could face a life sentence in prison. The judge denied their requests for bail, which means they will stay in custody until their next court date on July 15.

Meanwhile, on June 9, the US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced guilty pleas from five men. What case were they involved in? Read the full story.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Bitcoin Family now hides their crypto seed phrases across four continents amid growing kidnapping threats.
  • Recent violent attacks on crypto holders have triggered new personal security measures in the industry.
  • Crypto executives are increasingly hiring private security.

A wave of violent kidnappings targeting cryptocurrency holders is pushing some of the industry’s most well-known figures to overhaul their security — including Didi Taihuttu, patriarch of the so-called “Bitcoin Family.”

Taihuttu, who famously sold everything in 2017 to go all-in on Bitcoin, revealed that his family has abandoned hardware wallets and now hides their crypto seed phrases across four continents.

The shift follows a string of threats and rising attacks on crypto holders worldwide.

Even at Gunpoint Attackers Would Get Little

“We have changed everything,” Taihuttu told CNBC from Thailand. “Even if someone held me at gunpoint, I can’t give them more than what’s on my phone wallet — and that’s not much.”

Over the past eight months, the family moved to a hybrid system: seed phrases are encrypted, split, and stored in both physical and digital formats.

Some parts are etched onto fireproof steel plates hidden across four continents. Others are stored via blockchain-based encryption services.

“You only need to remember which words you changed,” Taihuttu explained. The system ensures that even if attackers access part of the seed phrase, they cannot unlock the family’s full holdings.

The decision comes as physical attacks on crypto holders increase. Moroccan police this week arrested a suspect accused of kidnapping crypto executives.

In France, the father of a crypto millionaire was brutally attacked. And in New York, a tourist was tortured for over two weeks as kidnappers tried to extract his Bitcoin credentials.

The Taihuttus, who remain entirely unbanked and travel full-time with their three daughters, say they are rethinking even their public presence.

After strangers tracked their residence through YouTube videos, they stopped posting travel updates and moved homes.

“We got a little bit famous in a niche market — but that niche is becoming a big market now,” Taihuttu said, noting the family has decided to avoid traveling to France altogether.

About 65% of their crypto is now locked in cold storage across four continents. The rest remains in multi-signature wallets or decentralized exchanges for trading and daily spending.

Taihuttu said they avoid centralized vaults and services, preferring to retain full control.

“What happens if one of those companies goes bankrupt? You’re putting your capital back in someone else’s hands,” he said.

Crypto Executives Hire Bodyguards

As reported, crypto executives are turning to personal security services as targeted kidnappings and ransom attempts continue to escalate, particularly in France.

In May, private security firms such as Infinite Risks International, based in Amsterdam, reported a sharp increase in demand from crypto professionals seeking round-the-clock protection amid rising crypto kidnapping.

The rise in inquiries came a after spate of violent attacks, including multiple kidnappings attempts that have alarmed both investors and law enforcement.

Insurance Companies Looking To Capitalize on Crypto Investors Who Fear Kidnapping: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/insurance-companies-looking-to-capitalize-on-crypto-investors-who-fear-kidnapping-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/insurance-companies-looking-to-capitalize-on-crypto-investors-who-fear-kidnapping-report/#respond Mon, 02 Jun 2025 02:53:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/insurance-companies-looking-to-capitalize-on-crypto-investors-who-fear-kidnapping-report/

Insurance companies are reportedly looking to capitalize on the rising incidents of kidnapping and physical violence targeting crypto millionaires.

NBC News reports that at least three companies that provide insurance and security services for cryptocurrency investors and firms are preparing to offer kidnap and ransom (K&R) insurance policies for those with security concerns stemming from their crypto holdings.

According to Rebecca Rubenfeld, chief operating officer at the crypto insurance firm AnchorWatch, the fear of violence was a big topic at the annual Bitcoin Conference that was held in Las Vegas last week.

“They’re tense. I’m not saying that because I’m trying to sell insurance, but overall, the mood is a very good environment for me.”

AnchorWatch is considering offering kidnapping and ransom protection in the coming months.

The news comes after a string of reports emerged about the kidnapping of crypto investors. Last month, armed assailants reportedly tried to abduct the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noiza, the CEO of the French crypto exchange platform Paymium, in Paris.

In another incident, three teenagers allegedly stole $4 million worth of cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from a man who hosted a crypto-related event in Las Vegas and left him stranded at White Hills, Arizona.

And last week in New York City, a kidnapper allegedly tortured and threatened a crypto investor for three weeks to gain access to his Bitcoin (BTC) wallet.

Two men suspected in the kidnapping and torture of a 28-year-old Italian cryptocurrency investor have pleaded not guilty, while the investigation into their case appears to have expanded to the New York Police Department itself.

New York police had previously arrested William Duplessie, 33, and John Woeltz, 37, on the charges, as well as a third individual, Beatrice Folchi, 24, though her prosecution is being deferred. The victim has not been publicly named.

The men are accused of kidnapping the victim and holding him hostage in a luxury townhouse in Manhattan’s ritzy SoHo neighborhood for more than two weeks. During that time, New York City police say the trio tortured the man, forcing him to take drugs, dangling him from a ledge, urinating on him and electrocuting him in an effort to force him to hand over the private keys to his bitcoin. The alleged perpetrators are accused of making t-shirts of the victim with a crack pipe in his mouth and taking Polaroids of the victim with a gun to his head.

The victim escaped last Friday, grabbing his laptop and getting out of the townhouse and then seeking help from a traffic officer.

Duplessie entered a not-guilty plea to five different charges, including kidnapping with an intent to collect a ransom, kidnapping and causing a physical injury, criminal possession of a loaded firearm, assault with an intent to cause a physical injury with a weapon and unlawful imprisonment, according to the court docket.

Woeltz was charged with kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment and criminal possession of a firearm, and he also pleaded not guilty, according to his court docket.

Two NYPD officers, including a detective assigned to Mayor Eric Adams’ protection detail, worked for both Duplessie and Woeltz in their off-duty hours and have now been placed on modified duty, Bloomberg reported Thursday. A source familiar told CoinDesk that the two officers are not believed to be part of the kidnapping, but rather did security work for the defendants. They may have driven the victim from an airport to the townhouse, but have not been tied to his torture, the source said.

A spokesperson for the NYPD said the matter was “under internal review.”

A spokesperson for the mayor’s office said in a statement that, “Every city employee is expected to follow the law, including our officers, both on and off duty. We are disturbed by these allegations, and as soon as it came to our attention, the officers were placed on modified duty. The investigation is ongoing.”

UPDATE (May 29, 2025, 22:27 UTC): Adds additional detail.

A second man tied to a recent crypto-related kidnapping in New York is expected to turn himself in, according to ABC7 New York’s report on May 26.

He is believed to be a Swiss crypto investor who worked closely with John Woeltz, the main suspect in the case.

The suspect’s name has not been publicly shared, but he is reportedly a co-founder of a trading company based in Switzerland. While a report from NBC says he plans to report to police within the week, FOX5 New York suggests he might already be in custody.

The case centers around Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan, a 28-year-old from Italy, who said he was kidnapped in a SoHo apartment for over two weeks.

According to the police, Carturan was allegedly tortured and pressured to hand over the recovery phrase to his cryptocurrency wallet. His estimated net worth is around $30 million.

Carturan told officers that he arrived in New York on May 6 to meet business partners. He said his passport was taken, and he was beaten until he agreed to share his crypto access details.

He told his captors he needed to retrieve the recovery phrase from a laptop in another room. As he walked away to get it, he saw an opportunity to run. That escape led to the arrests and helped police connect Woeltz to his Swiss business partner.

Paris Family Fights Off Masked Gang in Crypto-Linked Kidnapping Attempt https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paris-family-fights-off-masked-gang-in-crypto-linked-kidnapping-attempt/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paris-family-fights-off-masked-gang-in-crypto-linked-kidnapping-attempt/#respond Sun, 18 May 2025 03:00:37 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paris-family-fights-off-masked-gang-in-crypto-linked-kidnapping-attempt/

A masked gang tried to abduct the daughter and young grandson of a crypto company executive in Paris, but the attackers fled empty-handed after a violent struggle.

This incident is part of a trend of violent cases targeting individuals connected to the crypto industry in France.

Crypto Exec’s Family Targeted in Attack

According to a BBC report, the attack happened around 8:20 a.m. in the city’s 11th district and was captured on video by an onlooker. Local media revealed that the woman and her husband were getting out of their car with their child when three men jumped out of a white van and tried to pull them away.

The couple fought back, which resulted in the husband being hit several times on the head while trying to protect his family. Meanwhile, the wife managed to grab a gun from one of the culprits and threw it into the street. Police later confirmed the weapon was a replica air gun.

Despite the busy street and children on their way to school nearby, passers-by hesitated to intervene at first. However, as more people began to react, the attackers abandoned the attempt and ran back to the van, where a fourth person was waiting inside.

As the culprits drove away, one witness threw a fire extinguisher at the vehicle. Following the incident, the family was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police sources confirmed that the woman is the daughter of a crypto company boss. AFP said the victims are relatives of the co-founder of French Bitcoin exchange Paymium. The Paris police unit that handles armed robbery is now investigating the incident.

A Series of Crypto-Related Kidnappings

This development follows a similar case just over a week earlier, where the father of a crypto millionaire was kidnapped in another part of Paris while walking his dog. In this instance, the abductee was held for ransom.  After being in captivity for three days, he was released with one of his fingers cut off. Several people have been arrested in connection with the case.

Another high-profile incident happened in January when David Balland, co-founder of crypto wallet firm Ledger, and his wife were taken at their home in central France, with the culprits demanding a 10 million euro ransom for their release.

While they were later rescued, Balland was also found missing a finger. Around the same time, rumors spread about another abduction involving Ledger’s other co-founder, Eric Larchevêque. However, these claims were later denied by French media.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the incidents are connected, but all victims involved had some link to crypto.
