Tether has minted over $20 billion worth of USDT since the start of 2025, pushing the stablecoin’s total circulation beyond $157 billion, according to its quarterly attestation report released on July 31.

The company noted that over $13.4 billion in USDT was issued during the second quarter alone, reflecting strong demand for the dollar-pegged token across global markets.

Tether emphasized that its reserve assets fully back all tokens in circulation.

As of the end of Q2 2025, the company’s exposure to US Treasuries stood at more than $127 billion. This includes $105.5 billion in direct Treasury holdings and $21.3 billion held indirectly, an $8 billion increase from the previous quarter.

With this level of exposure, Tether remains among the largest non-sovereign holders of US government debt.

Speaking on these milestones, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said:

“Q2 2025 affirms what markets have been telling us all year: trust in Tether is accelerating. With over $127 billion in U.S. Treasury exposure, robust bitcoin and gold reserves, and over $20 billion in new USDT issued, we’re not just keeping pace with global demand, we’re shaping it.”

Tether’s profits and US investments

Tether reported a net profit of approximately $4.9 billion for Q2 2025, bringing its year-to-date total to $5.7 billion.

Of this, $3.1 billion came from recurring operational income, while $2.6 billion was generated from mark-to-market gains on its gold and Bitcoin holdings.

Meanwhile, Tether stated that its shareholder capital remains steady at $5.47 billion. This equity cushions against unexpected market shocks and highlights Tether’s commitment to financial resilience.

As a result, the stablecoin firm has begun directing a significant portion of its profits toward long-term initiatives.

Over the past six months, the company has invested heavily in infrastructure projects, with the US emerging as a key market.

According to the firm, roughly $4 billion has already been deployed domestically into ventures like XXI Capital and Rumble, including developing the Rumble Wallet.

Legal troubles

Despite its financial strength, the company faces two unresolved legal cases in New York.

The firm stated that one of the cases is a class-action suit related to the 2017–2018 Bitcoin market downturn. The other involves proceedings tied to the bankruptcy of crypto lender Celsius.

In both cases, Tether International is named as a defendant, but the firm’s management says potential outcomes cannot yet be reliably assessed.

As such, no provisions have been made in its financials for these litigations.

As more investors look to enter the cryptocurrency market, two primary methods have emerged: purchasing coins directly from exchanges like Coinbase or Binance, or investing in publicly-traded companies that hold significant amounts of crypto on their balance sheets.

According to a recent informative report by Fortune, the latter approach has garnered considerable attention and has become one of the hottest trades in the realm of digital assets.

160 Firms Hold Bitcoin On Their Balance Sheets

Currently, approximately 160 firms globally have added Bitcoin (BTC) to their balance sheets, with 90 of these companies based in the United States. Notable names such as Tesla, Block, and GameStop have joined the ranks, along with the Trump Media and Technology Group.

This trend is puzzling to some analysts, as the rise in share prices of these firms often seems disproportionate to the value of the cryptocurrencies they hold.

The report highlights Strategy, previously MicroStrategy, a cybersecurity firm that shifted its focus entirely to Bitcoin under the leadership of its founder, Michael Saylor.

The company’s decision to pivot away from its core business has proven lucrative, with Strategy now holding a Bitcoin stash valued at around $74 billion and a market capitalization of approximately $112 billion.

Finance professor Mitchell Petersen from Northwestern University likens this phenomenon to the dot-com bubble of the early 2000s, when companies rebranded themselves by adding “dotcom” to their names, resulting in inflated stock prices.

Petersen expresses skepticism towards the current trend, noting that while large corporations like Apple and Microsoft do invest their cash strategically, they typically do so by holding safe, liquid assets as part of a broader financial strategy.

He questions the rationale behind many firms’ investments in Bitcoin, especially when such actions appear disconnected from their core business operations.

The Risks Of Public Companies Embracing Crypto

Although such strategies have been successful, the volatility of the cryptocurrency market still poses significant risks for companies that engage in this trend.

Experts warn that many firms may find themselves in precarious positions during market downturns, raising concerns about the sustainability of this approach.

Darrell Duffie, a finance professor at Stanford University, argues that the current wave of public companies buying Bitcoin is more of a “meme effect” than a sound investment strategy. He contends that firms should focus on their core competencies rather than trying to replicate the speculative strategies of hedge funds.

While some firms, such as Strategy, demonstrate that it is possible to succeed with this approach, Duffie cautions that as more firms follow suit, the market will eventually correct itself. He predicts that this trend will fade, making way for the next investment fad.

Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin USDT, has disclosed a portion of its investment portfolio, revealing an involvement in cryptocurrencies that extend beyond Bitcoin (BTC). The announcement comes as Tether reports record profits in 2024, which have been used to fund these strategic investments in more than 120 companies across multiple sectors.

Tether Expands Investment Portfolio Beyond Bitcoin

Tether has unveiled a glimpse into its expansive investment portfolio, marking a significant pivot in its capital allocation strategy beyond just Bitcoin. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tether, Paolo Ardoino, confirmed in an X social media post that the stablecoin firm has invested in over 120 companies as part of its Tether Investment division. He added that this number is expected to grow in the coming months and years.

Notably, Ardoino disclosed that these investments are funded exclusively through the company’s record profits from 2024, which total $13.7 billion. He emphasized that none of the funds were obtained from reserves backing Tether’s stablecoin.

Interestingly, Tether’s profits, generated from yield on its holdings of over $130 billion in US Treasuries, are now being directed into transformative industries through some of the most prominent companies. Its venture arm has expanded its focus past Bitcoin, now investing in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), renewable energy, privacy infrastructure, tokenization, agriculture, and others.

When asked by Crypto Tale how this diverse portfolio supports USDT’s position amid an increasingly stringent global regulatory environment, Ardoino underscored its strategic importance. On the question of USDT’s future in Europe under the continent’s new MiCA regulations, the Tether CEO stated that the stablecoin company would only consider re-entry once the regulatory landscape offers stronger protections for both consumers and stablecoin issuers.

Companies In Tether’s Venture Portfolio

On its official website, Tether shared a partial list of some of the companies among the 120 it has invested in. These range from blockchain infrastructure platforms like Synonym and Holepunch, to AI-focused firms like Crystal Intelligence, and payment technology providers such as CityPay.io and Sorted Wallet. The presence of companies like Blackrock Neurotech and Adecoagro reflects a commitment to broader technological and environmental impact, reaching into neuroscience and agriculture, respectively.

Tether’s investment narrative is framed not solely in financial terms but as a deliberate push toward catalyzing decentralization and empowering individuals. The stablecoin firm declared its capital as a “catalyst for change,” invested in projects that reduce reliance on centralized systems and promote global equity. This mission-driven approach is visible across its portfolio, which also includes companies involved in data sovereignty like Northern Data, cross-border financial solutions such as Quantoz and OrionX, and privacy-first communication platforms.

Mansa, a DeFi fintech venture, and Oobit, a global crypto payment platform, have also joined Tether’s investment portfolio, marking another step toward the company’s push toward real-world crypto adoption. Both firms expressed appreciation for the support, aligning with Tether’s broader vision to integrate stablecoins into everyday payment systems.

Authorities in Shenzhen have issued a warning to residents about fraudulent financial schemes posing as stablecoin investments, as rising interest in stablecoins attracts unscrupulous actors.

Key Takeaways:

  • Shenzhen warned residents about scams disguising themselves as stablecoin investments.
  • Authorities said these schemes often involve illegal activities like fraud and money laundering.
  • Hong Kong and the US are advancing stablecoin regulations, signaling growing global oversight.

In a notice released Monday, Shenzhen’s Office of the Special Working Group for Preventing and Combating Illegal Financial Activities said some entities are leveraging buzzwords like “financial innovation” and “digital assets” to promote scams disguised as legitimate opportunities.

“These entities exploit new concepts such as stablecoins to hype up so-called investment projects involving ‘virtual currencies,’ ‘virtual assets,’ and ‘digital assets,’” the office said.

Stablecoin Scams Pose as Innovative Investments

Authorities cautioned that stablecoin schemes often involve illegal activities like fraudulent fundraising, gambling, pyramid schemes, and money laundering.

The advisory comes as stablecoins gain global attention. Pan Gongsheng, governor of China’s central bank, recently acknowledged that stablecoins and central bank digital currencies are transforming international payment systems.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong has taken steps to regulate the sector, with its Legislative Council passing a stablecoin bill in May to establish a licensing framework for issuers.

On the international stage, the U.S. Senate advanced the GENIUS Act last month, a landmark stablecoin bill now awaiting House deliberation.

Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Christopher Hui added Monday that the city could begin issuing stablecoin licenses later this year, but suggested approvals would be limited.

Last week, the Hong Kong government unveiled its latest policy statement, outlining plans to accelerate real-world asset tokenization and expand the city’s crypto licensing regime.

The new “LEAP” framework focuses on legal clarity, ecosystem growth, real-world adoption, and talent development, with a stablecoin licensing regime set to launch on August 1.

The government also plans to regulate tokenized government bonds and ETFs, paving the way for secondary market trading of these products on licensed digital asset platforms.

It aims to expand tokenization efforts into sectors like metals and renewable energy, highlighting use cases such as gold and solar panels.

Stablecoins Edge Closer to Mainstream Adoption

Stablecoins have emerged as one of crypto’s rare success stories, capturing the attention of corporations and regulators alike.

Recent reports that Amazon, Walmart, and other major companies are exploring stablecoin payments sent ripples through traditional finance, briefly pushing stablecoin transaction volumes ahead of Visa’s in 2024.

Frank Combay of Next Generation said regulatory clarity, especially Europe’s MiCA framework, has unlocked stablecoins’ growth potential by removing the biggest barrier: uncertainty.

He believes stablecoin ecosystems can reduce transaction costs by over 90% and are becoming increasingly attractive to both consumers and corporations.

In the US, the proposed GENIUS Act could mark a turning point. Passed by the Senate and awaiting House review, the bill would require stablecoins to be backed by U.S. Treasuries, mirroring existing models from Tether and Circle.

Supporters argue this could strengthen the dollar’s dominance in digital finance, while critics worry it could expand federal debt.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has officially signed into law a comprehensive “Bitcoin Reserve Ban” that prohibits the state from accepting, holding, or investing in digital asset.

The legislation, known as H.B. 7082, passed unanimously through both the state House of Representatives and Senate without a single opposing vote.

Connecticut Goes Anti-Crypto as Governor Lamont Signs Bill Banning State Digital Asset Investments

The new law explicitly bars Connecticut and its political subdivisions from accepting virtual currency as payment or establishing any form of digital asset reserve.

This positions Connecticut as one of the most restrictive states regarding cryptocurrency adoption, contrasting sharply with the growing trend of Bitcoin reserve legislation across the United States.

The timing appears particularly significant, as 26 states have introduced 47 Bitcoin reserve bills, with Texas, New Hampshire, and Arizona already having approved state-level Bitcoin reserve frameworks.

Connecticut’s decision effectively removes it from the national conversation around strategic crypto adoption for public treasuries.

The legislation extends beyond investment restrictions to comprehensive regulations governing the transmission of money.

Crypto businesses must now provide extensive disclosures about material risks, including warnings about fraud potential, market volatility, and the irreversible nature of transactions.

Additional protections require parental verification for users under 18 years old.

States Rally Around Bitcoin Adoption Despite Federal Uncertainty

Crypto adoption at the state level is aggressively growing and starkly contrasts with this new Connecticut move.

Texas leads the movement with Governor Greg Abbott signing Senate Bill 21, establishing America’s first state-funded Bitcoin reserve entirely separate from the state treasury.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar will oversee the fund, with companion legislation HB 4488 protecting reserves from routine fund reallocations.

Senator Charles Schwertner led the initiative, arguing, “the state of Texas should have the option of evaluating the best performing asset over the last 10 years.“

New Hampshire also achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first state to pass laws allowing public funds to be invested in Bitcoin reserves.

Governor Kelly Ayotte signed legislation permitting up to a 5% allocation in digital assets with a market capitalization exceeding $500 billion, effectively targeting Bitcoin exclusively.

California is also not left out with its progressive adoption through Assembly Bill 1180, which unanimously passed with 78 Assembly Members supporting pilot programs for digital asset fee payments.

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation will create frameworks for cryptocurrency-based government transactions by 2025.

Arizona, however, presents a complex picture, with Governor Katie Hobbs vetoing comprehensive Bitcoin reserve legislation while simultaneously signing HB 2749, which creates frameworks for managing unclaimed digital assets.

The state maintains multiple active bills, including revised HB2324, which recently passed Senate reconsideration.

Corporate adoption accelerates regardless of state-level policies, with 252 entities now holding Bitcoin, representing approximately 16.57% of the total supply.

Strategy maintains the largest position at 597,325 BTC worth $63.93 billion, with the most recent purchase being 4,980 Bitcoin for $531.1 million, at an average price of approximately $106,801 per bitcoin.

Regulatory Patchwork Creates Compliance Challenges

Notably, the new Connecticut law mandates extensive compliance measures, including customer identification protocols, transaction receipt requirements, and robust risk disclosure frameworks that exceed federal minimums.

Money transmission licensees must maintain virtual currency holdings equal to customer obligations while prohibiting unauthorized use of controlled assets.

The legislation establishes that virtual currency held by licensees becomes property interests of claimants, creating additional legal protections for consumers.

Several states have abandoned their efforts to reserve Bitcoin, creating an inconsistent national landscape.

Florida withdrew House Bill 487 and Senate Bill 550 during legislative sessions, joining Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Montana, and Oklahoma in failed adoption attempts.

Positively, some other states are still in the process. For instance, Michigan introduced House Bill 4087, which allows for a 10% treasury allocation to cryptocurrencies.

At the same time, Ohio advanced Senate Bill 57, which creates exclusive Bitcoin reserve funds with mandatory five-year holding periods.

Similarly, North Carolina also passed legislation permitting a 5% investment allocation pending validation by third-party oversight.

Additionally, West Virginia’s Inflation Protection Act proposes a 10% treasury allocation to digital assets with a market capitalization exceeding $750 billion, effectively limiting investments to Bitcoin and select stablecoins.

The legislation positions precious metals and cryptocurrencies as inflation hedges against government spending deficits.

Oklahoma has also approved the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Act through the House Committee with a 12-2 vote, allowing for a 10% public fund allocation to digital assets that meet market capitalization thresholds.

The state previously passed Bitcoin Rights legislation protecting self-custody rights and transaction freedoms.

More than a quarter of South Koreans in their 20s to 50s now own digital assets, with their crypto investments making up 14% of their total financial portfolios, according to a new report from the Hana Institute of Finance released Sunday.

The study, titled 2050 Generation’s Virtual Asset Investment Trends, shows that interest in crypto cuts across age groups. Those in their 40s led participation at 31%, followed by people in their 30s at 28% and 50s at 25%.

78% of respondents in their 50s said they use crypto as a way to amass funds, while 53% said they were preparing for retirement through crypto investments. More respondents now cite growth potential, diversification, and structured savings plans as key motivations for investing.

Meanwhile, 70% of respondents expressed interest in expanding crypto investments in the future. 42% said they would invest more if traditional financial institutions took a larger role in crypto markets, while 35% cited stronger legal protections as a key factor in boosting confidence.

Korean investors make regular crypto purchases

Investment patterns are also maturing. The proportion of investors making regular purchases rose from 10% to 34%, and mid-term trading increased from 26% to 47%, while short-term trading fell slightly.

The way investors get information is also changing. Per the report, reliance on word-of-mouth has declined, while the use of official exchanges and analytical platforms has risen.

Bitcoin (BTC) remains the primary choice, with six in ten investors including BTC in their holdings. As experience grows, however, many diversify into altcoins or stablecoins. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and security tokens (STOs) remain niche, with nine in ten investors sticking exclusively to coins.

“Virtual assets play a major role within investors’ portfolios,” said Yoon Sun-young, a researcher at Hana Financial Research Institute. “Investors expect legal institutionalization and expansion of the role of the existing financial sector.”

A major pain point highlighted was the restriction preventing linking multiple bank accounts with crypto exchanges. Seven in ten investors said they would favor their primary bank if this rule were relaxed.

Concerns about market volatility remain widespread (56%), while worries over exchange or fraud risks were more pronounced among those hesitant to invest further.

Korea’s crypto boom fueled by desperation

Last week, Eli Ilha Yune, chief product officer at Anzaetek, said the surge in crypto South Korea’s crypto adoption isn’t driven by optimism about blockchain technology.

Speaking at German Blockchain Week, Yune argued that many young Koreans are turning to crypto out of financial desperation, seeking quick profits rather than supporting Web3 ideals.

Youth unemployment in South Korea is a key factor, standing at 6.6%, more than double the national average. Yune explained that South Korea’s once high-growth economy has stalled, leaving many young people jobless and unable to afford real estate or see meaningful returns from traditional investments like stocks.

Amid this economic pressure, crypto has become the only viable investment option for Korea’s younger generation, according to Yune. He noted that while some young investors understand crypto’s technology, many are unaware of its infrastructure.

Norway is reportedly planning to introduce a temporary ban on the development of new data centres linked to crypto mining, Reuters reported on June 20.

According to the report, the government is expected to implement the restrictions before the end of the year, citing environmental and energy concerns.

The government says the aim is to preserve electricity for more productive uses.

Karianne Tung, Norway’s Minister for Digitalization and Public Administration, said authorities want to reduce crypto mining activity as much as possible. She added that these operations offer limited economic benefit, bringing in few jobs or tax revenue, despite consuming large volumes of energy.

Meanwhile, this stance puts Norway at odds with a growing number of countries turning to Bitcoin mining to utilize surplus energy and boost national income.

Notably, countries like El Salvador, Belarus, and Pakistan have embraced state-backed mining programs, which support local economies, help stabilize energy grids, and lower electricity costs for citizens.

Norwegian firm embraces Bitcoin

While the government is pushing back against mining, Norwegian companies are deepening their involvement in Bitcoin.

Data from Nordics Bitcoin reveals that Aker ASA, a major industrial holding company, currently holds 754 BTC, valued at over $80 million, making it the country’s largest corporate holder of the asset.

Crypto-focused firm K33 has also increased its accumulation, acquiring 25 BTC this year and signaling plans to increase its holdings to 1,000 BTC.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian Block Exchange recently purchased 6 BTC and expects to expand its reserve to 10 BTC by the end of June as part of an exploratory initiative.

These moves suggest that Bitcoin continues to gain traction as a treasury asset among Norwegian firms despite the political headwinds.

The corporate interest aligns with a global trend that has seen the top crypto become a prominent player in the international financial system.

Family offices are reportedly investing a lot more in a certain type of alternative investment amid global uncertainty, according to the biggest asset manager in the world.

Private credit is emerging as a top alternative asset for family offices, according to a new survey by BlackRock, reports Bloomberg.

Of the 175 family offices around the world that were surveyed, more than half have a bullish outlook on private credit and nearly one-third say they are planning to increase allocations to the asset class this year.

Says Armando Senra, head of the Americas institutional business at BlackRock,

“They are diversifying their exposure within private markets. While allocations used to be primarily into private equity growth, now what you see is high interest in private credit, the beginning of interest in infrastructure.”

The survey also finds that 30% of respondents plan to commit more of their money to the infrastructure market.

Lili Forouraghi, BlackRock’s head of family offices, health care, endowments, foundations and official institutions in the US, says the super-rich are increasingly interested in the potential of private credit to generate a higher yield than public bond markets.

She also says that infrastructure investments related to decarbonization and “the whole buzz of AI plus data centers, those are the areas that have intrigued a lot of our clients.”

The survey finds that, on average, alternative investment comprises 42% of assets in family office portfolios, up from 39% in a prior 2022-2023 survey, and that private credit holdings make up anywhere from 15% to 30% of some family offices’ portfolios.

Correlation economics shows that traders are leaning towards gold futures prices, with the GC00 curve steeper.

The gold dip during the US-China trade war earlier this year was not a flight from safety. It was a byproduct of the stronger dollar, a broad risk rally that reduced the S&P 500 by 15%.

“In reality, gold can be used for all kinds of things. People value gold for metals. No one value bitcoin.

– Peter Schiff, the man who trades his wife for money

So, what is the better hedge against inflation: Bitcoin or gold? The truth is said, neither protects you from inflation.

Everyone today is totally confused about what inflation is. The problem is that if you don’t understand this simple point, you won’t understand the long-term value of cryptocurrency, gold or stocks.

Here’s what you need to know:

Bitcoin and Ethereum are not insurance contracts for inflation. They are a gamble on illegal decline.

Inflation isn’t just about printing money. This happens when supply chain fractures, war breaks out, or demand for production of demand arises.

Federal Reserve Print Dollars do not automatically spike prices at grocery stores. What it does is pump financial assets like workplaces, crypto and housing, as it is where liquidity lands.

Certainly, you shouldn’t print too much money – as the Federal Reserve prints 1/4 of the total supply of money so far – but the main factor in inflation is not printing money, it is the supply and demand of goods.

They believe the ramp-prolonged inflation crisis will raise the price of gold. it’s not. When it comes to inflation that is out of control, we cannot protect you.

Bitcoin tends to move around with high-tech stocks. Therefore, for the sake of perspective, how a dollar investment in various asset classes was developed in 1802 is:

sauce

Gold is accepted as a complement to our inventory portfolio. that’s it. The only excuse to make it your primary asset is to be hard on and schizophrenia for Armageddon.

Perhaps because Peter Schiff’s top videos are “This can be very ugly,” “We’ve never seen anything like this,” and “We’re trying to do something much worse than I thought.”

In a world where inflation earns less wages and savings than your local vending machine, Crypto offers counterweights.

Not because it’s trendy, but because top cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Sol, and SUI don’t bending on the whims of policy. Rareness is incorporated. Supply concludes. And as more people find reasons to actually use these networks, the pressure just builds up. This time we’re in the right direction.

sauce

In a world of indifferent economic uncertainty, including the Federal Reserve, which controls the economy like dictatorships and banks that promise you to own nothing by 2030, it’s good to have a store of value that cannot be debased.

That’s Crypto. And that’s why it’s stronger than ever in the summer of 2025.

Russian banks have been given the green light to offer crypto-related financial products, but only to investors who meet certain qualifications.

The country’s central bank announced on May 28 that licensed financial institutions can provide services tied to cryptocurrency prices, such as derivatives and digital securities, as long as they do not involve transferring actual crypto assets.

Following the announcement, one of Russia’s biggest banks acted quickly. On May 29, T-Bank, formerly known as Tinkoff Bank, introduced a new investment product that tracks Bitcoin’s

The product, which the bank refers to as a “smart asset,” enables users to invest directly in rubles through the bank’s app.

T-Bank’s offering is available only to accredited investors and is issued through Atomyze, a state-supported platform that handles digital asset tokenization.

The central bank stated that while exposure to crypto prices is allowed, the products must not involve the direct exchange or delivery of cryptocurrencies.

The decision comes as more Russian residents turn to digital assets. According to the Bank of Russia, local crypto inflows increased by 51% in the first three months of 2025, reaching 7.3 trillion rubles, equivalent to around $81.5 billion.

Meanwhile, Lee Jae-myung, a leading presidential candidate in South Korea, recently proposed launching a stablecoin backed by the Korean won. What did he say about it? Read the full story.
