Here’s what spooked them.

Shares of Circle Internet Group (CRCL -8.71%) took a 28.1% hit in August 2025, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The group behind the USDC (USDC -0.00%) stablecoin posted its first earnings report as a public company in the middle of the month, and it wasn’t strong enough to support Circle’s early price jump.

Circle’s earnings landed with a thud

From the initial public offering (IPO) on June 4 to the end of July, Circle’s stock had gained a hair-raising 492%. Investors were watching the first earnings report closely, looking for signs that Circle’s business could sustain a $42.0 billion market cap.

But that bullish outcome wasn’t in the cards. Sure, the results were impressive, given that Circle’s core business is based on an asset that will always be worth $1 per coin. Revenue rose 53% year over year to $658 million as the active circulation of USDC nearly doubled to $61.3 billion. But Circle still posted a net loss of $482 million in the second quarter, largely due to costs associated with the IPO. The price spike itself was the root cause of these charges, as the skyrocketing stock price changed the value of Circle’s convertible debt and stock-based compensation policies.

The boring banking secret behind Circle’s exciting revenue

It may sound strange that Circle generated a $658 million revenue stream in the second quarter, even though the USDC stablecoin neither gained nor lost any value. But the company operates much like a classic bank — it earns interest on the dollar-based funds that provide direct backing for the stablecoin. These interest payments accounted for 96.4% of Circle’s total revenue in the second quarter.

As for the stock’s price drop, it should be noted that the slide started well before Circle’s earnings report. As of Sept. 2, Circle’s share price is down 54.4% from the absolute peak on June 23. The big surge followed by a steep price drop is pretty common for big-name IPOs, and Circle was one of the most anticipated market launches in recent memory.

Only CoreWeave (CRWV -9.41%) and Figma (FIG -6.70%) have seen splashier IPOs in 2025, and they have indeed followed similar charting patterns. Figma’s stock is down 46.2% from a soaring peak just after its IPO in July, while CoreWeave took a couple of months to build a 359% gain and then lose nearly half of it.

I rarely jump on IPO launches, because early investors tend to get burned rather quickly. Circle provided yet another example of a well-worn charting drama. And I’m not entirely convinced that Circle’s cool-off period has ended yet. You should probably avoid this red-hot financial technology stock until it stabilizes at a more plausible valuation.

Internet pioneer Tim Berners-Lee once dreamed of an open and accessible digital information system. His vision for the web — a virtual space where everyone had equitable opportunities to contribute, collaborate, share, and learn together — has shifted.

But the internet has moved in the opposite direction from this open garden. From single points of failure to censorship by sectors both public and private, it is now in the middle of a fight between messaging-obsessed political bodies and profit-hungry corporations, each seeking to control or monetize information flows.

Web3, powered by decentralized apps (DApps), promises to rekindle Berners-Lee’s dream of a permissionless space for free, open communication and innovation. Yet ironically, DApps today also rely heavily on centralized infrastructure or data sources. These single points of failure compromise the entire ecosystem’s security and integrity — as seen in many of the complaints around Solana.

Systems are only as secure as their weakest points. And to fulfill Web3’s ethos, DApps must adopt and implement genuinely open, decentralized, and verifiable infrastructure.

DApps Suffer from Concentrated Vulnerabilities

Most developers build the front end of DApps on a decentralized interface, but depend on centralized data infrastructure for backend support.

DApps largely run on centralized data hosting platforms and cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Although easily accessible, these platforms are susceptible to single-point failures and censorship, leading to global outages and downtime.

History is a witness to these failures. There are multiple examples where Infrastructure-as-a-Service platforms have faced disruptions, interrupting seamless DApp usage.

For instance, although MetaMask functions as a decentralized wallet, its endpoints run on centralized tech like Infura to access Ethereum. In 2022, when Infura blocked access after U.S. sanctions, MetaMask users temporarily couldn’t access their wallets from specific regions.

This is not an isolated incident. Infura clients have also faced interruptions in the past. Similarly, Solana and Polygon users faced outages due to the overloading of centralized RPCs during high network traffic.

DApps using centralized infrastructure to supply data are thus susceptible to downtime, information inaccuracies, usage gaps, and disconnected data flows. These incidents demonstrate the need to shift to decentralized infrastructure for data transferability and smooth accessibility without facing outages.

The Need for a Decentralized DApp Ecosystem

DApps without a decentralized stack are an oxymoron.

Instead of AWS, Google, or Azure, DApps must use open-source solutions like InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), Filecoin, or Arweave. These protocols provide a tamper-proof, distributed storage facility with high uptime and protection against random outages.

DApps running on decentralized infrastructure work with independent node operators. This helps distribute data queries across the network, eliminating single points of failure for unstoppable data availability.

Since individual nodes cannot block information flows, DApps run smoothly even when several nodes are offline. So the network always remains accessible without any downtime.

Decentralized infrastructure further removes the dependency on intermediaries who arbitrarily control data flows. Instead, DApps can connect with data, service providers, and users within an integrated, enmeshed open-source system.

Pocket Network unlocks open data accessibility so that any DApp can get the information it needs, without relying on centralized or singular entities. Pocket’s Shannon upgrade created the first truly permissionless Open API Network.

Decentralized social networks like BlueSky and the AT Protocol don’t depend on centralized RPCs. Rather, they work with decentralized RPCs to access open data. Similarly, DeFi protocols using Chainlink don’t need to depend on centralized APIs to source real-time on-chain price data.

A robust, genuinely decentralized tech stack is critical for DApps to build a digital ecosystem without single points of failure, paving the way to return to Berners-Lee’s vision of a globally accessible network.

Towards Berners-Lee’s Vision of an Open Internet

Tim didn’t envision a society where a few megacorporations build walled gardens with asymmetrical relationships between users and companies. He wanted open communication in the digital world without any powerful intermediaries controlling information exchange.

This vision is aligned with Satoshi Nakamoto’s idea of a decentralized, peer-to-peer exchange system. And although crypto now leans toward a casino-style gambling circus, that was not how Nakamoto and the cypherpunk community imagined it to be.

That said, Web3 innovators are actively building the infrastructure necessary to bring Tim and Satoshi’s vision to fruition. Because an open digital world with equitable accessibility is a must-have, not a nice-to-have.

Decentralized infrastructure protocols for open-source data are rapidly emerging as the new frontier for seamless data accessibility to train AI models and support cross-chain DApp usage. With a $350 billion open data market, it’s critical to wrest control away from centralized providers and distribute it among decentralized operators.

To thrive, crypto, AI, and other emerging tech must reject Web2’s business model and embrace the internet’s OG vision, now enshrined in the Web3 paradigm. Moving toward a decentralized infrastructure that doesn’t suffer from single points of failure is crucial to building a resilient and reliable internet.

The convergence of AI (artificial intelligence) and crypto isn’t a trend it’s a structural shift. As both ecosystems mature, they’re beginning to solve each other’s most difficult limitations.

AI brings automation, content generation and adaptive intelligence. Crypto brings trustless systems, composability and programmable ownership.

Together, they are not just reshaping software they are laying the foundation for the next internet economy.

Over the past decade, crypto has quietly built the base infrastructure for a more open internet.

Blockchains, smart contracts, decentralized storage and public-key systems have created the rails for verifiable, user-owned applications.

But the applications themselves have often lacked a human interface.

Meanwhile, AI has become a transformative force in content, conversation and utility but it exists primarily behind APIs owned by private companies.

Without crypto, AI has no native way to express ownership, prove authenticity or distribute value.

The intersection of these two technologies is where things get interesting.

Crypto fixes the ownership problem in AI. When an AI model generates an image, a video, a song or an essay, who owns that output? Who gets credited or paid?

With crypto, we can establish provenance, register outputs as NFTs, encode revenue splits via smart contracts and give AI-generated content an on-chain identity.

It’s not just about digital art or collectibles it’s about building economic rails for intelligence itself.

What we’re talking about is the ability to assign financial agency to digital creators that aren’t human and to do it in a way that’s transparent, immutable and global.

At the same time, AI fixes the usability problem in crypto. Crypto protocols are powerful, but they’ve always required users to learn complex interfaces and workflows. AI simplifies that.

With AI-powered agents or virtual characters, crypto becomes easier to use, more intuitive and more personal.

Agents can explain your transaction history, recommend a DeFi strategy, auto-compound your staking rewards or even act on your behalf.

Imagine an AI wallet that knows your goals and can navigate crypto like a power user but with zero friction.

This drastically reduces the cognitive load required to participate in decentralized systems.

What emerges is a new kind of software, autonomous, self-improving and financially active.

Virtual influencers that post, respond and grow audiences. Trading bots that learn and adapt in real time. Digital concierges that offer services across platforms 24/7.

These aren’t just AI toys. They are monetizable digital labor. They generate value, interact with users and evolve.

And they require crypto infrastructure to function wallets, payments, identity, coordination and access to permissionless systems.

We’re already seeing this materialize in the creator economy. A musician can deploy a digital twin that composes, remixes and engages with fans on their behalf.

A fitness influencer can scale themselves into dozens of AI-powered coach bots that interact with users in real time.

Every one of these agents can be tokenized, monetized and operated autonomously.

And behind it all, crypto is the connective tissue that ensures payments, permissions and provenance work at scale. These systems are already emerging.

But the real opportunity is in making them composable, where developers can plug together AI models, data sources and crypto primitives to build entirely new categories of experiences.

Just as Shopify enabled a long tail of e-commerce entrepreneurs, this stack will unlock a long tail of intelligent, automated and monetizable software.

At a deeper level, what we’re witnessing is the birth of a new computing layer. AI turns software into services that adapt. Crypto turns services into networks that anyone can join or fork.

Together, they form ecosystems that are intelligent, decentralized and economically aligned. You don’t just use the app, you own a piece of it, improve it or extend it with your own logic.

There are also governance implications.

As AI systems begin to participate in markets, we’ll need ways to manage collective behavior, enforce accountability and define rights not just for human users but for the digital agents and influencers themselves.

Crypto-native governance, DAOs and reputation systems may offer a starting point for building these new frameworks.

The internet is evolving. We’re moving from platforms to protocols. From static pages to conversational agents. From corporate-owned to user-owned networks.

In that world, AI gives us the intelligence to act. Crypto gives us the structure to coordinate. And what we build on top will redefine how people interact, earn and create online.

If crypto gave us digital property rights, AI gives us digital labor. The combination isn’t just powerful, it’s inevitable – and we’re still early.

Solana Foundation introduced the Solana Attestation Service on May 23, positioning the protocol as a trust layer for what the network’s backers call “internet capital markets.”

The open-source service lets approved issuers bind off-chain credentials, such as know-your-customer results, geographic eligibility, or accreditation status, to a user’s wallet address without exposing personal data on-chain.

Attestations live inside the wallet, travel across applications, and are verified with a software development kit call.

According to the announcement, the design removes repetitive onboarding checks and eliminates the need for each project to store sensitive identity records.

Portable credentials aim to streamline compliance

The Foundation said developers can deploy Solana Attestation Service to meet regulatory obligations, gate region-specific offerings, or build reputation systems that deter Sybil attacks.

Investors can hold “KYC passports” once and reuse them for future token sales, gaming studios can issue badges linked to provable player histories, and real-world asset platforms can confirm that buyers meet accreditation thresholds before releasing digitally wrapped securities.

Identity providers in Solana’s ecosystem have already integrated the new service. Additionally, infrastructure firms plan to ingest attestation data for risk scoring and transaction monitoring.

The Solana Identity Group developed the protocol. Group members said they would publish additional identity standards and invite other teams to contribute through open-source repositories.

Rise of internet capital markets

Solana Attestation Service arrives as the Foundation and independent builders push the concept of internet capital markets.

The concept comprises a model where builders can seek funding decentralized through tokens. These tokens act as equities for the builder’s product, granting the right to receive returns.

The main venue for this new narrative is the Believe app, which lets builders present their ventures and seek funding through posts on X. Australian technology entrepreneur Benjamin Pasternak and TBH app founder Nikita Bier recently endorsed the application.

As a result, the launchpad’s native token, LAUNCHCOIN, soared 4,500% from May 11 to May 14. At the time of writing, LAUNCHCOIN has held an upside of 2,800% since May 11.

Solana’s new attestation service is central to this new crypto sector. It lets decentralized applications confirm legal eligibility without re-creating legacy databases.

The Cyberspace Administration of China, the national internet regulator and censor, has shut down more than a dozen social media accounts that were spreading false information on stock and crypto markets.

The agency said Saturday that some of the targeted accounts touted illegal stock recommendations and hyped crypto trading.

Social Media Accounts, Websites Lure Netizens With Fake Crypto Hypes

According to a report by Baidu, several accounts on Weibo with names such as “Huo Ge Chats About Cryptocurrency”, and “Arn – On Coins,” promoted any hyped crypto transactions.

“[They] induced netizens to participate in virtual currency transactions by posting group chat information and profit screenshots,” the report read. Further, some websites – PKEX, WEEX, and HTX – offered app download services for trading in international crypto platforms.

The accounts were found in popular Chinese social media platforms, including Weibo, Douyin, RedNote and WeChat. The fake accounts and websites involved in crypto promotions have been closed, the watchdog noted.

The Cyberspace Administration has collaborated with financial regulators to carry out the crackdown operation.

“The public should invest wisely, stay alert to risks, avoid spreading rumours, and steer clear of illegal financial activities,” the regulator said.

Surging Crypto Criminal Cases

With China’s ban on crypto trading and mining, many Chinese citizens have been on the lookout for offshore exchanges. Some of them have been routing transactions through VPNs or international platforms.

To meet the demand, fraudsters have been using false claims to lure victims into scams involving fake promotions, and phishing.

The People’s Bank of China Digital Currency Research Institute warned users in April over claims circulating online about the launch of a “Digital Yuan Bank.”

Various platforms have spread false information alleging new pilot programs in cities like Shanghai.

According to the Securities Times investigation, scammers have used these claims to solicit personal and financial data from the public. They promised cashback returns of up to 5%, creating chat rooms and hosting in-person events to convince individuals to convert digital yuan using unauthorised channels.

Further, blockchain security firm SAFEIS reported that money involved in crypto-related crimes in China surged 10-fold to 430.7 billion yuan ($59 billion) in 2023.

Solana Ghibli-inspired memecoins are surging in popularity as ChatGPT users have flooded social media with Studio Ghibli-inspired images over the past 24 hours.

On March 25, OpenAI launched image generation for its ChatGPT-4o mode, leading users to splash images across social media style in the art style of Studio Ghibli — known for its anime films Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk contributed to the trend, posting portraits of themselves generated by the model. Musk, with over 219 million followers on his platform X, has a history of influencing memecoins such as Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Dogecoin (DOGE) with his posts.

Neither Musk nor Altman mentioned any Ghibli-themed memecoin. Still, the largest Ghibli-themed token by market cap, Ghiblification (GHIBLI) has reached a market cap of $20.80 million since it went live 19 hours ago, according to DEX Screener.

At the time of publication, it is trading at $0.02083, up approximately 39,010% since it was created.

At least 20 other Ghibli-related memecoins have been created since. Some crypto traders see it as a potential sign of life for the memecoin market, which has dropped 57% in value since Dec. 8 — just days after Bitcoin first hit $100,000.

Crypto trader Sachs said in a March 26 X post that he is praying the memecoin “runs to $100M to bring some hopes into these markets.”

In context: Some of the implications of today’s AI models are startling enough without adding a hyperrealistic human voice to them. We have seen several impressive examples over the last 10 years, but they seem to fall silent until a new one emerges. Enter Miles and Maya from Sesame AI, a company co-founded by former CEO and co-founder of Oculus, Brendan Iribe.

Researchers at Sesame AI have launched a new conversational speech model (CSM). This advanced voice AI has phenomenal human-like qualities that we have seen before from companies like Google (Duplex) and OpenAI (Omni). The demo showcases two AI voices named “Miles” (male) and “Maya” (female), and its realism has captivated some users. However, good luck trying the tech yourself. We tried and could only get to a message saying Sesame is trying to scale to capacity. For now, we’ll have to settle for a nice 30-minute demo by the YouTube channel Creator Magic (below).

Sesame’s technology uses a multimodal approach that processes text and audio in a single model, enabling more natural speech synthesis. This method is similar to OpenAI’s voice models, and the similarities are apparent. Despite its near-human quality in isolated tests, the system still struggles with conversational context, pacing, and flow – areas Sesame acknowledges as limitations. Company co-founder Brendan Iribe admits the tech is “firmly in the valley,” but he remains optimistic that improvements will close the gap.

While groundbreaking, the technology has raised significant questions about its societal impact. Reactions to the tech have varied from amazed and excited to disturbed and concerned. The CSM creates dynamic, natural conversations by incorporating subtle imperfections, like breath sounds, chuckles, and occasional self-corrections. These subtleties add to the realism and could help the tech bridge the uncanny valley in future iterations.

Users have praised the system for its expressiveness, often feeling like they’re talking to a real person. Some even mentioned forming emotional connections. However, not everyone has reacted positively to the demo. PCWorld’s Mark Hachman noted that the female version reminded him of an ex-girlfriend. The chatbot asked him questions as if trying to establish “intimacy” which made him extremely uncomfortable.

“That’s not what I wanted, at all. Maya already had Kim’s mannerisms down scarily well: the hesitations, lowering “her” voice when she confided in me, that sort of thing,” Hachman related. “It wasn’t exactly like [my ex], but close enough. I was so freaked out by talking to this AI that I had to leave.”

Many people share Hachman’s mixed emotions. The natural-sounding voices cause discomfort, which we have seen in similar efforts. After unveiling Duplex, public reaction was strong enough that Google felt it had to build guardrails that forced the AI to admit it was not human at the beginning of a conversation. We will continue seeing such reactions as AI technology becomes more personal and realistic. While we may trust publicly traded companies creating these types of assistants to create safeguards similar to what we saw with Duplex, we cannot say the same for potential bad actors creating scambots. Adversarial researchers claim they have already jailbroken Sesame’s AI, programming it to lie, scheme, and even harm humans. The claims seem dubious, but you can judge for yourself (below).

As with any powerful technology, the benefits come with risks. The ability to generate hyper-realistic voices could supercharge voice phishing scams, where criminals impersonate loved ones or authority figures. Scammers could exploit Sesame’s technology to pull off elaborate social-engineering attacks, creating more effective scam campaigns. Even though Sesame’s current demo doesn’t clone voices, that technology is well advanced, too.

Voice cloning has become so good that some people have already adopted secret phrases shared with family members for identity verification. The widespread concern is that distinguishing between humans and AI could become increasingly difficult as voice synthesis and large-language models evolve.

Sesame’s future open-source releases could make it easy for cybercriminals to bundle both technologies into a highly accessible and convincing scambot. Of course, that does not even consider its more legitamate implications on the labor market, especially in sectors like customer service and tech support.
