JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and TD Bank are disclosing data breaches that are placing some customers’ accounts and personal information at risk.

In new filings with the Massachusetts state government, Chase says at least four customers in the state are affected by multiple breaches.

In two incidents, Chase says employees improperly accessed customers’ credit and debit card information and triggered fraudulent transactions, prompting the bank to close the affected cards, issue replacements, and reimburse the customers.

In the other two incidents, the bank says it mistakenly posted transaction details, including names, addresses, account numbers, and transaction amounts, to other customers’ accounts. At this point, no misuse due to those errors has been detected.

Meanwhile, Bank of America says documentation relating to at least one customer’s savings bonds was lost in transit on February 14th.

Attempts to recover the documentation, according to the North Carolina-based lender, have proved unsuccessful.

“According to our records, the information involved in this incident was related to your Savings Bonds and included your first and last name, address, Social Security number, and account number.”

The lender says it is monitoring the customer’s banking account for any suspicious activity and is committed to resolving any unauthorized transactions.

Lastly, TD Bank says a former employee improperly accessed a customer’s personal information between December of 2024 and January of 2025.

The information may have included the customer’s name, address, phone number, social security number, account number, and transactional data.

TD Bank says it’s monitoring the account for fraud and is offering the customer a complimentary two year membership to an identity theft protection and recovery service.

25,000,000 Customers’ Personal Information At Risk As Telecom Giant Discovers Malware for Mass SIM Swapping https://earlybirdsinvest.com/25000000-customers-personal-information-at-risk-as-telecom-giant-discovers-malware-for-mass-sim-swapping/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/25000000-customers-personal-information-at-risk-as-telecom-giant-discovers-malware-for-mass-sim-swapping/#respond Sun, 11 May 2025 01:11:02 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/25000000-customers-personal-information-at-risk-as-telecom-giant-discovers-malware-for-mass-sim-swapping/

A telecom giant is offering 25 million people free SIM cards after a massive hack left its customers’ sensitive personal information at risk.

SK Telecom, the largest mobile provider in South Korea, acknowledged in a security notice that its customers’ personal data was exposed during a malware attack on the company.

The company said in an announcement last month that “no cases of misuse of the information have been confirmed to date.” However, local publication Korea JoongAng Daily is reporting that some of SK Telecom’s customers have discovered money stolen from their bank accounts after the hacking incident.

Police reportedly said that three days after the hack, a man had learned that his mobile plan with SK Telecom had suddenly been cancelled, and he was told by company employees at a service center that someone had signed up for a budget plan with another provider using his name.

Soon thereafter, the man discovered that 50 million Korean won – about $34,000 – had been stolen from his bank account by unknown people in five separate transactions. He then called the police and asked his bank to freeze his account.

Victims of the hack have formed an organization seeking collective action against SK Telecom, and are demanding a full investigation into the attack.

The group, dubbed the “SKT USIM Hacking Joint Response,” told Korea JoongAng Daily that they believe the worse is still yet to come from the data breach, and that the telecom giant’s reaction to the mishap has been underwhelming.

“The leaked information could lead to serious secondary damage across financial, social networking and other services that rely on mobile phone number authentication… SK Telecom’s response has been extremely insufficient.

The scope and extent of the damage have not been clearly revealed, which has amplified user anxiety and confusion.”

SK Telecom subsequently offered free SIM cards for all 25 million customers.

However, the company now says it’s only able to get ahold of 6 million SIM cards for the entire month of May, meaning that it will take some time for it to follow through on its compensation plan.

Says the company in an update,

“[SK Telecom] currently has 1 million SIMs and plans to secure 5 million more SIMs by the end of May. However, since many customers are coming at once and waiting times are expected to be long, please check in advance through the online reservation application system.”

A US bank is blaming one of its own employees for the exposure of the sensitive data impacting dozens of customers.

According to a new filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, an insider at TD Bank wrongfully accessed the data of 43 customers.

The breach is reported to have occurred on June 13th, 2024, but it wasn’t discovered until this year, on March 6th.

Impacted customers are being delivered written notices.

A copy filed with the Office of the Maine Attorney General says the personal information that may have been accessed include names, dates of birth, phone numbers, addresses, account numbers, social security numbers and transactional data.

The bank says its corporate security team has launched an internal investigation in the matter and has also reached out to local law enforcement.

TD Bank is offering those impacted a free two-year enrollment to an identity protection service to affected customers.

With $372.8 billion in assets under management as of December 2024, TD Bank is the 10th largest bank in the United States.

Thousands of Americans’ Personal Information Exposed By Banking Giant Capital One, Alleges New Class Action Lawsuit https://earlybirdsinvest.com/thousands-of-americans-personal-information-exposed-by-banking-giant-capital-one-alleges-new-class-action-lawsuit/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/thousands-of-americans-personal-information-exposed-by-banking-giant-capital-one-alleges-new-class-action-lawsuit/#respond Sat, 05 Apr 2025 01:13:34 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/thousands-of-americans-personal-information-exposed-by-banking-giant-capital-one-alleges-new-class-action-lawsuit/

A massive data breach exposed thousands of Capital One customers’ sensitive data, putting them at lifelong risk of identity theft, a new class action lawsuit claims.

Filed by plaintiff Andrew Willoughby, the suit alleges Capital One Financial Corporation, Capital One N.A. and Capital One Bank (USA) N.A. entities exposed its customers’ personal identifiable information (PII) due to an employee’s negligence.

The suit alleges that because of inadequately protected computer systems, customers’ names, Social Security numbers, addresses, email addresses, dates of birth, telephone numbers, credit card numbers, transaction history, and other financial information exposed via a data breach.

The breach happened between August 11, 2022 and May 22, 2023, when an “unauthorized actor” accessed client PII due to the employee’s “failure to maintain an adequate security system,” according to the lawsuit.

The Capital One employee also allegedly delayed informing the plaintiffs of what happened in time to save them from potential identity theft crimes.

Says the complaint,

“Due to Defendants’ negligence, cybercriminals obtained everything they need to commit identity theft and wreak havoc on the financial and personal lives of thousands of individuals…

Defendants were negligent and failed to inform Plaintiff and the Class Members of the data breach in time for them to protect themselves from identity theft.”

Now, the suit alleges that “for the rest of their lives,” Capital One customers will have to face the threat of identity thieves possessing or misusing their personal information via the dark web.

“The unencrypted PII of Plaintiff and Class Members may end up for sale on the dark web or simply fall into the hands of companies that will use the detailed PII for targeted marketing without the approval of Plaintiff and Class Members. Unauthorized individuals can easily access the PII of Plaintiff and Class Members.”

Capital One was also recently accused of engaging in “cancel culture” by President Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump.

The bank has $490.1 billion in total assets as of the end of last year.

Coinbase Says FDIC Not Cooperating With Exchange’s Freedom of Information Request in New Court Filing https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-says-fdic-not-cooperating-with-exchanges-freedom-of-information-request-in-new-court-filing/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-says-fdic-not-cooperating-with-exchanges-freedom-of-information-request-in-new-court-filing/#respond Wed, 02 Apr 2025 20:49:19 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-says-fdic-not-cooperating-with-exchanges-freedom-of-information-request-in-new-court-filing/

Coinbase’s legal representatives say the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) hasn’t been cooperating with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

Coinbase has been attempting to leverage FOIA to uncover instances of the FDIC asking banks to freeze crypto services, known as “pause letters,” but the top US crypto exchange says the regulator hasn’t been complying with its information requests.

Paul Grewal, Coinbase’s chief legal officer, claims the pause letters were part of “Operation Choke Point 2.0,” an alleged attempt by Biden Administration government regulators to stifle the crypto industry.

The exchange hired the law firm History Associates, which filed a motion in January asking a federal court to intervene.

The following month, the court paused the FDIC’s deadline to respond to History Associates’ amended FOIA complaint “so that the parties could engage in a biweekly, informal information-sharing process,” according to the law firm.

Coinbase’s legal representation has requested information regarding the FDIC’s response to its FOIA requests, specifically concerning the regulator’s policy or practice of “failing to conduct complete searches of all relevant databases and failing to take adequate steps to preserve responsive documents.”

In a new motion filed this week, History Associates now says the FDIC is “unwilling to cooperate” with these FOIA requests.

“The only viable path forward is for the case to resume and proceed to litigation of the merits.”

Last month, the FDIC released redacted documents related to its supervision of crypto-related activities, which include pause letters sent to 24 banks as well as communications and records involving other regulated institutions.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) subsequently sent a letter to FDIC Acting Chairman Travis Hill requesting unredacted copies of the documents.

A billion-dollar bank is warning customers after a cybersecurity breach affecting thousands of customers.

In a filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, Western Alliance Bank says an unauthorized actor exploited a vulnerability in a third-party file transfer software system it uses.

The breach, which was discovered in late January and happened in October, impacts 21,899 customers, according to the filing.

“Western Alliance learned that an unauthorized actor had potentially accessed some of Western Alliance’s data on January 27, 2025. Our investigation determined that the unauthorized actor acquired certain files from the systems from October 12, 2024, to October 24, 2024…

On February 21, 2025, we determined that the files contained some of your personal information, including your name and Social Security number. The files may have also contained your date of birth, financial account number, driver’s license number, tax identification number, and/or passport, if you provided it to Western Alliance.”

The bank says it has informed law enforcement about the data breach and is offering customers a 12-month complimentary membership to an identity-theft protection service.

Western Alliance Bank currently has approximately $81 billion in total assets, according to the Federal Reserve.

Google makes it easier to remove your personal information from search results https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-makes-it-easier-to-remove-your-personal-information-from-search-results/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-makes-it-easier-to-remove-your-personal-information-from-search-results/#respond Mon, 03 Mar 2025 08:36:00 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/google-makes-it-easier-to-remove-your-personal-information-from-search-results/

In brief: As the dominant gateway to online information, Google’s search engine has shaped how people access and discover content. However, search results sometimes expose personal data, raising privacy concerns. A recent update introduces a tool that gives users more control over what appears in search results.

Google updated a search engine tool called “Results About You” that it initially rolled out in 2022. Developers have made it more user-friendly and directly integrated its most helpful features into search results, including the ability to remove your personal data from them.

Users must first take a somewhat counterintuitive step to use the tool: inputting their personal information into the system. While potentially alarming for those aiming to protect their privacy, this process is necessary for the tool to identify and manage specific data in search results. However, regardless of whether it appears in search results, Google likely already possesses this information anyway.

One of the most significant improvements in this update is the integration of its key features directly into search results. While not prominently displayed, users can access Results About You through the three-dot menu next to each search result. This menu includes options to remove results containing personal information.

When requesting the removal of personal information, Google prompts users for additional details, a process that typically takes only a few seconds. The interface also accommodates non-personal removal requests, such as reporting illegal content. All requests are logged in the “Results About You” tool for later review. It’s crucial to note that Google can only remove content from its search results, not the web pages containing it.

The redesigned hub allows users to monitor the status of their removal requests and offers additional features. For instance, users can request a data refresh if a search result contains inaccurate information. This option is useful when a website has removed personal data, but the search results haven’t updated.

It is not the first Google has overhauled the tool. In 2023, it introduced a suite of features that made it more proactive, actively scanning search results for users’ data. Developers added an expanded dashboard, giving users a more comprehensive view of their personal information in Search. It also added the ability to request the removal of nonconsensual explicit images from search results.

Google recommends regularly checking the Results About You hub. The tool automatically identifies new instances of previously highlighted personal data, allowing users to request removals quickly. Additionally, users can receive notifications via phone or email when new personal information emerges in search results.

Geo Genesis: A New Way to Share and Govern Information with Web3 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/geo-genesis-a-new-way-to-share-and-govern-information-with-web3/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/geo-genesis-a-new-way-to-share-and-govern-information-with-web3/#respond Wed, 19 Feb 2025 08:38:46 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/geo-genesis-a-new-way-to-share-and-govern-information-with-web3/

The Graph has just announced the early access launch of Geo Genesis, a new Web3 browser and knowledge graph application that puts information-sharing front and center. Instead of focusing solely on digital assets, Geo Genesis gives communities the tools to collaborate on knowledge.

The platform aims to show how users can work together to gather, verify, and shape fast-moving stories. By doing this, The Graph hopes to show that blockchain infrastructure can support fair community collaboration.

Inside Geo Genesis

At the core of Geo Genesis is a feature called “Spaces”. Each Space is like a shared workspace for a specific topic where users can submit ideas, fact check and refine information as needed. These Spaces use GRC-20 data standards so everyone can see when new content was added, who added it and how it might have changed over time.

Right now, Editors are using these Spaces to organize Crypto News stories so the wider community can watch how the content is governed. Over time, it’s likely that more Spaces will appear on different subjects, and each one can set up its own rules about what gets posted and how decisions are made.

Knowledge vs. Assets

Geo Genesis stands out because it treats knowledge as an essential resource rather than focusing on tokens, NFTs, or other digital assets. Many blockchain projects concentrate on speculation or trading, but The Graph envisions a decentralized approach to gathering facts and information.

Geo Genesis invites anyone to pool their expertise and verify what’s being posted. This could encourage a more active form of participation, where people feel responsible for making sure the information is trustworthy. As more users and groups join, Geo Genesis could grow into a larger network of knowledge Spaces, each shaped by the people who use it.

Governance with Aragon OSx

A big part of this is the governance framework provided by Aragon OSx. In early access, there are two main roles: Editors who vote on proposals and guide the overall direction of the content, and Members who submit new information.

In the future, these roles might be expanded or adapted depending on the community’s goals. For example, if a Space is about scientific research, it might use stricter rules to ensure accuracy. If a Space is about live events, the voting process might be faster to keep up with breaking news. This flexibility reduces misinformation by letting the community decide what works best for them and making every decision visible to everyone involved.

With the release of Geo Genesis, The Graph shows that Web3 technology can be about more than just financial exchanges. By giving people a way to build and oversee knowledge together, it points to a future where communities hold the reins.
