In its latest report, BitMEX Research examined how BRC-20 Tokens and Ordinal images are affecting Bitcoin node verification.

The study looked at Ordinal-related data on Bitcoin, including the transaction count and data size, to determine their impact on node operators.

BRC-20 Tokens Strain Bitcoin Nodes More Than Images

The September 8 report revealed that BRC-20 tokens create more problems for some Bitcoin node runners than Ordinal images. Notably, the former make up 92.5 million transactions while the latter account for only 2.7 million, yet both use about 30GB of storage. However, BRC-20 transactions put greater strain on nodes, while larger image-based Ordinals have little to no effect on performance.

BitMEX explained that large Ordinal images are easier for nodes to handle than regular transactions since they are stored in a non-executed part of the Taproot witness, and do not require signature checks. This makes them less demanding to verify and sometimes even helpful for scaling because they take up blockspace without adding to the UTXO set.

On the other hand, BRC-20 transactions function more like regular Bitcoin activity. Despite being smaller in size, they have expanded the UTXO set, growing from 84 million to 169 million between December 2022 and September 2025. This increase is creating challenges for node runners, especially those operating pruned ones. Data shows that such transactions have paid higher fees for blockspace, contributing more than 5,000 BTC since the protocol was introduced.

Tests Show Larger Ordinals May Speed Verification

BitMEX ran several tests for nearly three years to measure how quickly nodes could download and verify blocks with different levels of Ordinal-related data. The results suggest that large amounts of “arbitrary data” can actually speed up blockchain verification, with around 11% of the differences in speeds being due to larger inscriptions.

However, the researchers warned that the results do not mean Ordinal images are good for Bitcoin. This is because data-heavy inscriptions use a lot of blockspace, which could push out financial transactions that are central to the network’s purpose.

Elsewhere, a separate study by Glassnode found that Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens are not displacing regular Bitcoin transactions. The firm’s lead analyst explained that they are instead bringing more value, fees, and data into each block.

Additionally, BitMex emphasized that the findings are not conclusive because factors like internet speed and hardware differences can influence performance. They also encouraged further testing, noting that any small efficiency gains for nodes must be weighed against the broader costs to the Bitcoin network.

Apple released iOS 18.6.2 and iPadOS 18.6.2 on Aug. 20, 2025, along with macOS Sequoia 15.6.1, Sonoma 14.7.8, and Ventura 13.7.8, to fix a zero-day in the ImageIO framework that was exploited in the wild.

Per Apple, processing a malicious image could corrupt memory, enabling code execution, and the company is aware of a report of use in an extremely sophisticated attack targeting specific individuals.

The flaw sits in ImageIO, the component that parses common image formats, which makes delivery via everyday channels, including messaging apps and web content, straightforward from an attacker’s perspective. As security outlets reported, the bug is tracked as CVE-2025-43300 and stems from an out-of-bounds write that Apple addressed with improved bounds checking.

The crypto angle is direct. Wallet owners often copy and paste recipient addresses, and many keep recovery phrases in screenshots or photo storage for convenience. Research this year documented families of mobile spyware and stealers that scan galleries using optical character recognition and exfiltrate images with seed phrases, as well as strains that monitor the clipboard to swap addresses during a transaction.

As Kaspersky reported, SparkCat and its successor SparkKitty used OCR to harvest seed phrases from photos on both iOS and Android, including samples observed on official app stores.

A compromise achieved through a booby-trapped image can, therefore, act as an initial foothold to enable gallery scraping for recovery phrases, surveillance of crypto app activity, and clipboard hijacking during on-chain transfers. Previous research on clipboard hijackers explains how address strings are silently replaced to redirect funds during copy-paste, a tactic long used by drainer operations.

The current incident also fits a pattern of high-value iOS exploit chains used against targeted users. In 2023, Citizen Lab documented a zero-click chain, dubbed Blastpass, used to deliver commercial spyware, demonstrating how image and message parsing bugs can be linked for device takeover without user interaction.

That historical baseline, coupled with Apple’s acknowledgment of real-world use in the present case, frames the risk for crypto users who rely on mobile devices as primary signing endpoints.

Impact spans recent iPhone models and iPads covered by iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, including iPhone XS and later, plus supported Macs on Sequoia, Sonoma, and Ventura. Users can verify protection by confirming iOS or iPadOS 18.6.2, macOS Sequoia 15.6.1, Sonoma 14.7.8, or Ventura 13.7.8 in Settings, then rebooting after installation.

Security outlets urged immediate updates following Apple’s release and disclosure.

For a crypto-savvy audience, the operational takeaway is to close exposure by updating and to reduce post-exploit blast radius by moving seed storage off photo libraries, reviewing app photo permissions, limiting clipboard access, and treating mobile wallets as hot environments with strict hygiene.

Apple’s notes state the root cause was an out-of-bounds write in ImageIO that is now mitigated with stricter bounds checks, and the company confirmed exploitation reports when shipping the patch.

Google Maps seems to be testing a new feature that lets users react to images in a listing, similar to how you can currently react to messages in Google Messages.

Currently in Google Maps, when you open a listing you see the listing’s name, options like call and directions at the top, followed by images. You can swipe through the carousel of images and video or look for more in the Reviews section, but there’s no way to react or leave feedback to an image. Google now seems to be testing that.

On my Pixel 9 Pro, opening a listing shows a new “Press and hold to react” overlay on images with reactions above them. Pressing and holding an image shows five reactions above it, which include heart, pray, fire, a side tongue emoji (probably to react to an image of a restaurant), and a mind-blown emoji.

Tapping an emoji triggers an animation. For example, hitting the heart icon shows a big-sized heart that swirls across the screen. Moreover, when you first leave a reaction to an image, a dialog box informs the user that these emojis will be shared with Google and shown publicly.

However, on my device, tapping an emoji does nothing to the image, and there’s no way to tell if you’ve reacted (unless you tap-and-hold it again), as nothing shows up in the UI.

In Google Messages, if you react to a message, the emoji shows up below it, but emojis don’t appear in Google Maps for now. It’s also worth noting that these are the only five emojis available, and there’s no way currently to add others.

There’s no official word on what the feature is meant to achieve, but Google likely sees reactions as a quick way to boost engagement on Maps listings. The feature would make it easier for users to quickly share feedback on photos without leaving full reviews.

The feature doesn’t appear to be rolling out widely just yet, as I could spot it working only on my Google Pixel 9 Pro and Oppo Find N5, and not on any other Android devices or iPhone. However, since the feature has been spotted, it looks like it could roll out anytime soon.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) is taking action against a former bank employee who allegedly sold check images that resulted in a six-figure loss for the lender.

The OCC says it’s issuing an order of prohibition against Cricel Santamaria, a former client service representative at Webster Bank in Stamford, Connecticut.

Says the OCC,

“From approximately April 2019 until May 23, 2022, the respondent was employed at the bank. Between approximately October 2021 and April 2022, the respondent obtained approximately 62 check images from the bank’s internal systems and made them available for sale over the internet.

Thirteen bank customers reported fraud on their accounts shortly after their checks were made available for sale on the internet. The total fraud reported was $237,374 and the total Bank loss was approximately $108,000.”

According to the OCC, Santamaria “engaged in unsafe or unsound practices, caused more than a minimal loss to the bank, demonstrated personal dishonesty and willful or continuing disregard for the safety and soundness of the bank.”

The OCC order prohibits the ex-banker from working in the banking and financial services industry.

Santamaria consents to the OCC order without admitting or denying any wrongdoing. Under the order, the Department of Justice (DOJ) retains its right to “bring other actions deemed appropriate” against Santamaria.

The Webster Bank, a commercial bank based in Stamford, Connecticut, has more than $70 billion in assets under management.

Last Thursday, I took my son to the Rose Center for Earth and Space at New York’s Museum of Natural History. In the Hayden Planetarium, we watched a simulation of the Milky Way bloom above us, while the actor Pedro Pascal — who truly is everywhere — narrated the galactic dance unfolding on the screen.

It was breathtaking. But it didn’t compare to what was blasted around the world just a few days later, as the new Vera C. Rubin Observatory began broadcasting its “first light” — its inaugural images of the cosmos. I found myself pinching-to-zoom through a picture that contains roughly 10 million galaxies in a single frame, a vista so vast it would take 400 4-K TVs to display at full resolution. I could hold the universe itself on my screen.

Perched 8,660 feet up Cerro Pachón in the Chilean Andes, where the crystal-clear nights provide an exceptionally clear window into space, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory began construction in 2015 with funding from the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the US Department of Energy. Named for the pioneering astronomer Vera Rubin, whose work on galaxy rotation helped prove the existence of dark matter, the observatory was built to run a single, audacious experiment: the 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time.

It will photograph the entire Southern Hemisphere sky every few nights to tackle four grand goals: unmask dark matter and dark energy, inventory the Solar System’s asteroids and comets, chart the Milky Way’s formation, and capture every transient cosmic event.

What makes Rubin so special is its eye, which is a marvel. At its core is a 27-foot-wide dual mirror cast from 51,900 pounds of molten glass that is still light enough to sweep across the sky in seconds. The mirror directs a flow of light from the cosmic depths to the 3.2-gigapixel LSST Camera, a 5-by-10-feet digital jumbotron that is the largest digital camera ever made. It’s like a massive magnifying glass paired with the world’s sharpest DSLR: Together they capture a swath of the night sky equivalent to 45 full moons every 30 seconds.

And those images, which will be continuously shared with the world, are jaw-dropping. The headlining shot from Rubin’s debut, nicknamed “Cosmic Treasure Chest,” stitches together 1,185 exposures of the Virgo Cluster, our nearest major collection of galaxies, some 55 million light-years away.

But the Rubin Observatory is about much more than producing pretty cosmic wallpaper. Its unprecedented scale gives it the ability to search for answers to grand questions about space science. The NSF notes that Rubin will gather more optical data in its first year than all previous ground telescopes combined, turning the messy, ever-changing sky into a searchable movie.

It’s not just pretty pictures

As I’ve written before, the world has made great strides in planetary defense: Our ability to detect and eventually deflect asteroids that could be on a collision course with Earth. Rubin has already begun paying dividends toward that goal.

In a mere 10 hours of engineering data, its detection software identified 2,104 brand-new asteroids — including seven near-Earth objects, heavenly bodies whose orbit will bring them near-ish our planet.

That haul came from just a thumbnail-sized patch of sky; once Rubin begins its nightly scan of the whole Southern Hemisphere, it’s projected to catalog over 5 million asteroids and roughly 100,000 NEOs over the next decade, tripling today’s inventory. That will help NASA finally reach its congressionally mandated target of identifying 90 percent of the 25,000 city-killer-class NEOs (those over 140 meters) estimated to be out there.

How powerful is Rubin’s eye? “It took 225 years of astronomical observations to detect the first 1.5 million asteroids,” Jake Kurlander, a grad student astronomer at the University of Washington, told Earth.com. “Rubin will double that number in less than a year.”

A vivid, high-resolution image of a star-forming region in deep space, prominently featuring the Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8) in glowing pink and the Trifid Nebula (Messier 20) in a blend of pink and blue hues. The nebulae are surrounded by dense star fields and golden interstellar dust clouds. Dark filaments of cosmic dust snake through the frame, especially near the pink emission areas. The overall color palette includes warm golds, reds, cool blues, and purples, highlighting active regions of stellar birth and ionized gas.

And the images that Rubin captures will go out to the entire world. Its Skyviewer app will allow anyone to zoom in and out of the corners of space that catch Rubin’s eye, including celestial objects so new that most of them don’t have names. Looking at the app gives you a sense of what it must have been like to be one of the first human beings, gazing up at a sky filled with wonder and mystery.

Finding perspective in a pixel

It might seem strange to highlight a telescope at a moment when the world feels as if it is literally on fire. But the Vera Rubin Observatory isn’t just a triumph of international scientific engineering, or an unparalleled window on the universe. It is the ultimate perspective provider.

If you open the Virgo image and zoom all the way out, Earth’s orbit would be smaller than a single pixel. Yet that same pixel is where thousands of engineers, coders, machinists, and scientists quietly spent a decade building an eye that can watch the rest of the universe breathe, and then share those images with all of their fellow humans.

Seeing Rubin’s images brought to mind the lines of Walt Whitman’s “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer.”

I wander’d off by myself,

In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,

Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

On days when life on our little world feels chaotic, Rubin’s first-light view offers a valuable reminder: We’re just one tiny part in a tapestry of 10 million galaxies, looking up from our planet at the endless stars.

Why it matters: Windows 11’s Snipping Tool already allows you to copy text from images, offering functionality similar to Apple’s Live Text – but Microsoft’s implementation involves a few more steps. A new Windows 11 Insider update aims to streamline the process of grabbing text from various sources for easier copying and pasting.

Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels can now test a feature that moves the Snipping Tool’s text extractor directly to the main toolbar. This change eliminates the need to take a screenshot before capturing text.

The current public version of Windows 11 includes a text extractor in both the Snipping Tool and Photos apps. After opening an image in either program, users can copy text from the picture by clicking the extractor icon – located at the top of the Snipping Tool window or the bottom of the Photos window.

For further context, Microsoft offered this kind of functionality before in Windows via PowerToys, but that compares unfavorably to Macs or iPhones which have allowed users to select and copy text from photos by simply tapping and dragging since at least 2021.

Windows 11 Insider 11.2503.27.0 adds the extractor icon to the Snipping Tool capture toolbar, which appears after launching the app from the Start Menu or by pressing Win + Shift + S.

After clicking the text extractor, users can drag the rectangular snip selector over the portion of the screen containing the desired text.

Once selected, users can highlight specific text or copy the entire selection to the clipboard. A dropdown menu offers additional options, such as removing line breaks or automatically copying all text within the selected area by clicking “Copy all text.” Although preview features don’t always make it into public builds, adding this kind of functionality to the Snipping Tool seems like a no-brainer at this point.

Users interested in testing Windows’ upcoming features can register their Microsoft accounts with the Insider Program. To provide feedback on the new update, open the Feedback Hub via the Start Menu or by pressing Win + F, then navigate to Apps > Snipping Tool.

Windows 11 preview versions have also recently introduced new Android phone integrations, launched a gaming optimization FAQ, and attempted to relaunch the controversial Recall feature.

Recall which relies on GenAI and NPUs was meant to be launched last year, but Microsoft was forced to delay it due to security and privacy concerns. Recall allows Copilot to access a timeline of user actions to perform natural language search and commands. However, it works by taking snapshots of nearly everything happening on your PC at any given time. Although Microsoft has taken extra time to added security measures, many users remain skeptical about those assurances.

In brief: Just when you think Amazon couldn’t possibly find another way to sell you stuff, the company comes up with something else: shopping links embeded in your photo library images. In essence, the feature lets you identify an item within a photograph in your Amazon Photos library and be directed to its store page.

Former Microsoft executive Panos Panay, now senior vice president of Amazon’s Devices and Services division, announced the update to Amazon Photos on Threads.

Panay’s post included a clip demonstrating the upgraded features. It starts with a generative AI search using a natural language query – “Max playing with robot dog,” in this case. This brings up several images in the user’s Amazon Photos library featuring the boy and the device.

The system works by selecting one of the images and then tapping the Lens icon underneath. This scans the photo and brings up Amazon store listings for visually similar items it identifies, such as the robot dog, allowing you to view its customer rating and price. From here, you can go directly to the store page for more information and to purchase an item – if desired.

Amazon says the feature is ideal for anyone who may have seen a product in an image and wanted one themselves, but didn’t know what it was called or where to find it.

Amazon’s help page doesn’t specifically say if turning off the Tag Photos feature will stop the shopping capabilities from working. Amazon’s Tag Photos and Tag Specific People tools use image recognition technology to analyze and apply tags to your photos and videos, allowing users to sort and search their photos by people, objects, actions, and scenes – as demonstrated by Panay.

There appear to be contradictory claims on how many people were asking for this new shopping feature, varying from everyone to virtually no one outside of Amazon. The replies to Panay’s post include some that are positive, with people noting its usefulness, along with negative ones arguing that this is basically product ads based on a user’s photos.

Solana Ghibli-inspired memecoins are surging in popularity as ChatGPT users have flooded social media with Studio Ghibli-inspired images over the past 24 hours.

On March 25, OpenAI launched image generation for its ChatGPT-4o mode, leading users to splash images across social media style in the art style of Studio Ghibli — known for its anime films Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk contributed to the trend, posting portraits of themselves generated by the model. Musk, with over 219 million followers on his platform X, has a history of influencing memecoins such as Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Dogecoin (DOGE) with his posts.

Neither Musk nor Altman mentioned any Ghibli-themed memecoin. Still, the largest Ghibli-themed token by market cap, Ghiblification (GHIBLI) has reached a market cap of $20.80 million since it went live 19 hours ago, according to DEX Screener.

At the time of publication, it is trading at $0.02083, up approximately 39,010% since it was created.

At least 20 other Ghibli-related memecoins have been created since. Some crypto traders see it as a potential sign of life for the memecoin market, which has dropped 57% in value since Dec. 8 — just days after Bitcoin first hit $100,000.

Crypto trader Sachs said in a March 26 X post that he is praying the memecoin “runs to $100M to bring some hopes into these markets.”

“Severely needed,” Sachs added.

It follows the recent trend of memecoins sparking out of cultural references and movements. The CHILLGUY token launched on Nov. 15 on the Solana blockchain, riding the wave of the viral “Just a chill guy” meme that gained popularity on social media.

CHILLGUY’s value surged, reaching a peak market capitalization of $643 million by Nov. 27. 

However, investing in memecoins tied to daily trends comes with significant risk. CHILLGUY is down 95% from its November high, according to CoinMarketCap data.
