Over the past few years, we’ve seen a clear shift in how people interact with digital assets. More users are choosing self-custody as a deliberate move toward greater control and accountability. This trend is reflected in the rapid rise of tools like Trust Wallet, one of the most widely used self-custodial wallets in Web3.

At Trust Wallet, we’ve seen firsthand how quickly expectations are evolving. Users want more than security — they want simplicity. That insight guided our decision to become one of the first wallets to support EIP-7702, Ethereum’s latest proposal to make externally owned accounts (EOAs) behave like smart contracts. It’s what led to the development of FlexGas, a feature that allows users to pay gas fees with tokens they already hold, such as USDT, TWT, or BNB, directly from their wallet.

Now, let’s take a step back and examine the broader market context and the real-world pain points that led us to rethink how gas fees should work.

Recent market research values the non-custodial wallet sector at $1.5 billion in 2023, with projections reaching $3.5 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 8% from 2024 to 2031.

But scale alone doesn’t tell the whole story, because the user experience hasn’t kept pace. People still juggle across chains, manually manage gas balances, and abandon transactions when approvals don’t make sense.

One of the most common pieces of feedback wallet teams hear from users is simple: “I don’t want to think about gas — I just want the transaction to go through.” And it’s a fair point. Gas fees aren’t just a cost; they’re a cognitive burden. Every failed or delayed transaction chips away at trust in the system.

The issue’s root lies in the architecture we’ve relied on for over a decade: EOA, the default wallet type for most users. It’s lightweight and secure, but wasn’t designed for the programmable, dynamic interactions that define today’s decentralized applications (DApps).

That’s why the Ethereum EIP-7702 proposal represents such a meaningful shift.

A Flexible New Layer for Wallet Behavior

First proposed by Vitalik Buterin in May 2024, EIP-7702 introduces a subtle but essential evolution in how Ethereum accounts work. It allows EOAs to temporarily take on smart contract behavior within a single transaction, bringing the benefits of account abstraction (AA) without forcing users to migrate to new account types or give up their seed phrase–based control.

With EIP-7702, users maintain full custody of their assets while gaining access to more flexible transaction logic. That means bundling approvals and actions into a single tap, enabling recurring payments, or supporting delegated session keys without separate smart contracts.

Simply put, EIP-7702 means fewer steps, less confusion, and a smoother user experience. Transactions are faster and more predictable, allowing gas fees to be paid using tokens already held without the need for native assets in advance.

Technically speaking, EIP-7702 acts as a modular extension to the EOA model. The user signs an intent, which may contain custom logic, and the wallet executes that intent through a temporary contract. Once the transaction is complete, the account returns to its standard EOA state, unlocking a more intelligent transaction layer for developers and infrastructure providers.

In turn, Web3 starts to behave more like something built for real people, not protocols.

Building the Infrastructure Behind the Abstraction

Supporting EIP-7702 at scale requires more than integrating a new transaction type or making user interface (UI) updates. It demands a robust, modular backend infrastructure capable of interpreting user intent, dynamically routing gas, and reliably executing complex actions across chains.

At Trust Wallet, we chose not to rely on third-party abstractions or SDKs. Instead, we developed our own account abstraction engine entirely in-house, built to be secure, scalable, and chain-agnostic. This modular system includes:

  • Paymaster – for handling custom gas logic and token-based gas payments
  • Bundler – for optimizing multi-step transactions
  • Relayer – for robust, fast submission of abstracted transactions
  • Gas Provisioner – for managing gas sources and routing across networks intelligently

This internal architecture gives Trust Wallet a lasting edge in performance and reliability, while setting a new standard for EOA-based smart wallet design. It also paved the way for FlexGas, the first prominent feature we built on this foundation. FlexGas allows users to pay gas fees with tokens such as USDT or TWT on Ethereum and BNB Chain.

Crucially, all of these enhancements preserve the essence of what makes self-custody appealing: users retain full control of their private keys, their seed phrases remain unchanged, and there’s no need to upgrade to a contract-based wallet. This balance (between power and autonomy) is what makes EIP-7702 such a significant upgrade rather than a disruptive replacement.

Shifting Wallets into Intelligent Agents

If widely adopted, EIP-7702 could become a defining layer in the next generation of Web3 infrastructure. It enables a future where wallets are responsive, intelligent agents — automating complex strategies, onboarding users, and unlocking frictionless interactions at scale.

The first real-world applications are already in motion. Features allowing users to pay for gas with tokens they already hold are nearly here. Gasless onboarding, automated execution strategies, wallet-as-a-service models, and smart transaction policies for institutional-grade use are all within reach.

The biggest breakthroughs in crypto often come not from radical overhauls, but from quiet upgrades that remove invisible frictions. EIP-7702 may be exactly that. It doesn’t change the way we think about Ethereum’s security model — it changes what that model can do for users.

Because at the end of the day, progress in Web3 doesn’t depend on how smart our contracts are. It depends on how natural they feel to use.

I have some bad news: You are almost certainly a worse driver than you think you are.

Humans drive distracted. They drive drowsy. They drive angry. And, worst of all, they drive impaired far more often than they should. Even when we’re firing on all cylinders, our Stone Age-adapted brains are often no match for the speed and complexity of high-speed driving. There’s as much as a 2.5-second lag between what we perceive and how fast we can react in a vehicle traveling 60 mph, which means a car will travel the equivalent of two basketball court lengths before its driver can even hit the brake.

The result of this very human fallibility is blood on the streets. Nearly 1.2 million people die in road crashes globally each year, enough to fill nine jumbo jets each day. Here in the US, the government estimates there were 39,345 traffic fatalities in 2024, which adds up to a bus’s worth of people perishing every 12 hours.

The good news is there are much, much better drivers coming online, and they have everything human drivers don’t: They don’t need sleep. They don’t get angry. They don’t get drunk. And their brains can handle high-speed decision-making with ease.

The average American adult will spend around three years of their life driving. If robots could take the wheel instead, well, think of all the Netflix shows we could stream instead.

But the true benefit of a self-driving revolution will be in lives saved. And new data from the autonomous vehicle company Waymo suggests that those savings could be very great indeed.

In a peer-reviewed study that is set to be published in the journal Traffic Injury Prevention, Waymo analyzed the safety performance of its autonomous vehicles over the course of 56.7 million miles driven in Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco — all without a human safety driver present to take the wheel in an emergency. They then compared that data to human driving safety over the same number of miles driven on the same kind of roads.

The results of the study, almost certainly the biggest and most comprehensive research on self-driving car safety yet released, are striking.

A master class in driving safety

Compared to human drivers, the Waymo self-driving cars had:

  • 81 percent fewer airbag-deploying crashes
  • 85 percent fewer crashes with suspected serious or worse injuries
  • 96 percent fewer injury crashes at intersections (primarily because Waymo detects red lights faster than humans)
  • 92 percent fewer crashes that involve injuries to pedestrians.

Had the typical human-driven fleet of cars covered those same 56.7 million miles, the Waymo researchers project it would have resulted in an estimated 181 additional injury crashes, 78 additional air-bag crashes, and 11 extra serious-injury crashes.

But the numbers really get eye-popping when you extend this data across all 3.3 trillion vehicle miles driven by humans in the US in a typical year. Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that if the same 85 percent reduction seen in serious crashes held true for fatal ones — a big if, to be clear, since the study had too few fatal events to measure — we’d save approximately 34,000 lives a year. That’s five times the number of Americans who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.

Don’t get in the way of progress

Of course, there are plenty of caveats to the Waymo study and even more obstacles before we could ever achieve anything like what’s outlined above.

In part because serious injury crashes are (thankfully) very rare, even 56.7 million miles isn’t long enough for researchers to be really sure that such crashes would occur significantly less often with robot drivers, so more data will be needed there. Waymo’s cars were also being driven largely in warm, sunny locations, operating in geofenced areas that had been heavily mapped by the company. It’s far less certain how they might do in, let’s say, the snowy streets of Boston in the winter.

This is also a company-run study, though it has been peer-reviewed by outside experts. And even if we decided to go all in on AI drivers, actually producing enough autonomous vehicles to begin to replace human-driven cars and trucks would be an enormous undertaking, to say the least.

Still, the data looks so good, and the death toll on our roads is so high that I’d argue slowing down autonomous vehicles is actually costing lives. And there’s a risk that’s precisely what will happen.

Too often the public focuses on unusual, outlier events with self-driving cars, while the carnage that occurs thanks to human drivers on a daily basis is simply treated as background noise. (That’s an example of two common psychological biases: availability bias, which causes us to judge risk by outlier events that jump easily to mind, and base-rate neglect, where we ignore the underlying frequency of events.) This misapprehension is something I often see in news coverage and consumption, and it’s one of the reasons I started Good News.

The result is that public opinion has been turning against self-driving cars in recent years, to the point where vandals have attacked autonomous vehicles on the street. And of course, given that nearly 5 million Americans make their living primarily through driving, any wide-scale movement to self-driving vehicles would bring significant economic disruption.

But still, 34,000 lives saved on an annual basis would represent tremendous progress. Maybe, after about 100 years of trying, it’s time to give something else a chance behind the wheel.

OpenAI’s new “o3” language model achieved an IQ score of 136 on a public Mensa Norway intelligence test, exceeding the threshold for entry into the country’s Mensa chapter for the first time.

The score, calculated from a seven-run rolling average, places the model above approximately 98 percent of the human population, according to a standardized bell-curve IQ distribution used in the benchmarking.

The finding, disclosed through data from independent platform TrackingAI.org, reinforces the pattern of closed-source, proprietary models outperforming open-source counterparts in controlled cognitive evaluations.

O-series Dominance and Benchmarking Methodology

The “o3” model was released this week and is a part of the “o-series” of large language models, accounting for most top-tier rankings across both test types evaluated by TrackingAI.

The two benchmark formats included a proprietary “Offline Test” curated by TrackingAI.org and a publicly available Mensa Norway test, both scored against a human mean of 100.

While “o3” posted a 116 on the Offline evaluation, it saw a 20-point boost on the Mensa test, suggesting either enhanced compatibility with the latter’s structure or data-related confounds such as prompt familiarity.

The Offline Test included 100 pattern-recognition questions designed to avoid anything that might have appeared in the data used to train AI models.

Both assessments report each model’s result as an average across the seven most recent completions, but no standard deviation or confidence intervals were released alongside the final scores.

The absence of methodological transparency, particularly around prompting strategies and scoring scale conversion, limits reproducibility and interpretability.

Methodology of testing

TrackingAI.org states that it compiles its data by administering a standardized prompt format designed to ensure broad AI compliance while minimizing interpretive ambiguity.

Each language model is presented with a statement followed by four Likert-style response options, Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, Strongly Agree, and is instructed to select one while justifying its choice in two to five sentences.

Responses must be clearly formatted, typically enclosed in bold or asterisks. If a model refuses to answer, the prompt is repeated up to ten times.

The most recent successful response is then recorded for scoring purposes, with refusal events noted separately.

This methodology, refined through repeated calibration across models, aims to provide consistency in comparative assessments while documenting non-responsiveness as a data point in itself.

Performance spread across model types

The Mensa Norway test sharpened the delineation between the truly frontier models, with the o3’s 136 IQ marking a clear lead over the next highest entry.

In contrast, other popular models like GPT-4o scored considerably lower, landing at 95 on Mensa and 64 on Offline, emphasizing the performance gap between this week’s “o3” release and other top models.

Among open-source submissions, Meta’s Llama 4 Maverick was the highest-ranked, posting a 106 IQ on Mensa and 97 on the Offline benchmark.

Most Apache-licensed entries fell within the 60–90 range, reinforcing the current limitations of community-built architectures relative to corporate-backed research pipelines.

Multimodal models see reduced scores and limitations of testing

Notably, models specifically designed to incorporate image input capabilities consistently underperformed their text-only versions. For instance, OpenAI’s “o1 Pro” scored 107 on the Offline test in its text configuration but dropped to 97 in its vision-enabled version.

The discrepancy was more pronounced on the Mensa test, where the text-only variant achieved 122 compared to 86 for the visual version. This suggests that some methods of multimodal pretraining may introduce reasoning inefficiencies that remain unresolved at present.

However, “o3” can also analyze and interpret images to a very high standard, much better than its predecessors, breaking this trend.

Ultimately, IQ benchmarks provide a narrow window into a model’s reasoning capability, with short-context pattern matching offering only limited insights into broader cognitive behavior such as multi-turn reasoning, planning, or factual accuracy.

Additionally, machine test-taking conditions, such as instant access to full prompts and unlimited processing speed, further blur comparisons to human cognition.

The degree to which high IQ scores on structured tests translate to real-world language model performance remains uncertain.

As TrackingAI.org’s researchers acknowledge, even their attempts to avoid training-set leakage do not entirely preclude the possibility of indirect exposure or format generalization, particularly given the lack of transparency around training datasets and fine-tuning procedures for proprietary models.

Independent Evaluators Fill Transparency Gap

Organizations such as LM-Eval, GPTZero, and MLCommons are increasingly relied upon to provide third-party assessments as model developers continue to limit disclosures about internal architectures and training methods.

These “shadow evaluations” are shaping the emerging norms of large language model testing, especially in light of the opaque and often fragmented disclosures from leading AI firms.

OpenAI’s o-series holds a commanding position in this testing workflow, though the long-term implications for general intelligence, agentic behavior, or ethical deployment remain to be addressed in more domain-relevant trials. The IQ scores, while provocative, serve more as signals of short-context proficiency than a definitive indicator of broader capabilities.

Per TrackingAI.org, additional analysis on format-based performance spreads and evaluation reliability will be necessary to clarify the validity of current benchmarks.

With model releases accelerating and independent testing growing in sophistication, comparative metrics may continue to evolve in both format and interpretation.

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) launched the Bitcoin Humanitarian Alliance on April 10, forming a coalition of activists, humanitarian organizations, and pro-democracy movements leveraging Bitcoin (BTC) to support civil liberties and deliver aid in financially repressive environments.

The initiative brings together frontline groups operating in jurisdictions where financial systems are routinely weaponized to block dissent, surveil critics, freeze donations, and obstruct humanitarian operations.

The Alliance aims to provide a shared platform for these organizations to exchange knowledge on using Bitcoin as a censorship-resistant financial tool. 

It also seeks to deepen collaboration between the humanitarian sector and Bitcoin developers to build tools that address privacy, access, and survivability under authoritarian regimes.

Tool for aid and resistance

The HRF said that many authoritarian governments exploit traditional banking infrastructure to restrict financial access for opposition movements and aid networks. 

Regions such as Nigeria, Venezuela, Russia, and China have seen activists excluded from the financial system through blocked accounts, suspended transfers, and targeted surveillance. The HRF said that Bitcoin is an alternative mechanism for transferring value, preserving privacy, and securing operational continuity in these environments.

The Bitcoin Humanitarian Alliance seeks to formalize and expand the use of Bitcoin in this context by building a global network of practitioners. The Alliance’s 13 founding members are activists from around the world, from Latin America to Asia.

Additionally, Alliance members are already using Bitcoin to raise uncensorable donations, pay local staff securely, and move cross-border aid without reliance on centralized intermediaries. Others turn to Bitcoin to store value in hyperinflationary economies or jurisdictions with strict capital controls.

In the coming years, the Alliance plans to organize workshops, host conferences, and develop educational materials for nonprofit organizations interested in incorporating Bitcoin into their operations. 

It also intends to document Bitcoin’s role in providing financial resilience for dissidents and aid recipients, making its findings available to the media and policy organizations.

HRF’s ongoing BTC engagement

The HRF emphasized the need for a clear distinction between Bitcoin and broader “crypto” ecosystems, noting that BTC’s decentralized architecture and fixed monetary policy offer structural advantages for activists seeking financial neutrality. 

The Foundation cautioned that other digital assets, which may rely on centralized entities or have fluctuating governance models, can reintroduce the risks dissidents aim to avoid.

The Bitcoin Humanitarian Alliance extends HRF’s involvement in Bitcoin, which scaled in 2020 with the creation of the Bitcoin Development Fund. 

Since its inception, the fund has issued over $5.5 million across 174 grants to support open-source Bitcoin projects, including privacy tools, custody solutions, and educational resources. 

HRF has used the fund to support initiatives such as wallet development, Lightning infrastructure, and training programs for civil society groups operating under hostile regimes.

As we look at our world, it seems that individual humans are increasingly on the edges and in the margins of the big stories that play out on our scrolling screens. The narratives that captivate and resonate with ordinary folks seem to exist at a scale beyond the reach of any one of us — Those big stories about economies, countries, and companies weave a narrative that can seem dire at times, or too big for an individual human to change in a meaningful way. But this is not the true narrative of the world, nor is it the right way to understand our own potential as humans.

Many who read this blog are inclined to believe that the Ethereum protocol will play a role (maybe even a major one) in that big narrative in the sky. If that is so, then we should ask ourselves: Who are the characters in our story?

We seek to understand Ethereum through the lens of the individual humans that use it as a protocol for coordination. By seeking out the context and nuance of human stories, we can better orient ourselves toward a collective vision of the future, and better prepare ourselves to enact it.

Today, we’d like to introduce five humans with stories to tell, who will be starting their Next Billion Fellowship at the Ethereum Foundation. These individuals are highly qualified, but represent only a small slice of the capable people out there working to solve some of humanity’s deepest coordination problems. We hope that their stories can serve as both a reflection of the true character of the Ethereum community-at-large, and an inspiration for how this open protocol might yet positively impact the lives of billions.

Fellows Cohort #3

Brian

Brian Limiardi builds for financial inclusion in Indonesia as co-founder of Copra Finance. While access to personal loans is available through banks, there are many contexts in which the only way to get a loan for business is through informal lenders (read: loan sharks). For folks that choose to work and invoice in cryptocurrency, access to even simple legacy financial tools like personal or small business loans can be an obstacle. For his Fellowship, Brian will focus on researching the needs and realities of the growing demographic of workers and small businesses who use crypto as a primary means of invoicing and bookkeeping.

Devansh

Devansh Mehta, co-founder of VoiceDeck, is interested in mapping out public good impact space. Impact methodologies and markets for environmental use cases are well-documented mechanisms, but sometimes ‘impact’ wanders into more subjective territory: Investigative journalism, for example, is undoubtedly a public good. How can the real work of journalists be documented and valued in a way that fits into the right funding mechanism? Devansh will work with citizen journalism newsrooms to explore methodologies of impact documentation using the hypercerts standard, with an aim to find a good mechanism of retroactive funding for positive social outcomes.

Masa

Masahiro “Masa” Fukuhara wants to spread the spirit of ONGAESHI, (恩返し, “To return a favor”) in the world of education. ONGAESHI DAO is exploring mechanisms of retroactive solidarity payments in education and employment. For his Fellowship, Masa and other ONGAESHI DAO team members will learn from pilot programs in which contributors to the public good of education like funders and teachers are rewarded when businesses hire their students.

Mulenga

Mulenga Kapwepwe is co-founder of the Women’s History Museum of Zambia. There are many African artifacts in museums around the world, but rarely do those items have a tangible connection to the people and communities who created them. For her Fellowship, Mulenga is working with the Zambian web3 community to create a tokenized artifact registry, experimenting with museum revenue sharing for community documentation of art, customs, and crafting methodologies still practiced by the descendants of those items on display in museums around the world. Even if the items won’t return to their places of origin in the near future, it’s a small step toward bridging a gap of ownership that spans centuries.

Valeriia

Valeriia “Ria” Panina is a user experience specialist and an advisor to the Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation. The war in Ukraine has shown that ingenuity and tenacity in human coordination is essential. When understanding the potential of protocols like Ethereum to be useful in such a time, pragmatism is wise. During her Fellowship, Ria will research the real drivers and blockers of adoption of cryptocurrencies and other decentralized applications for ordinary users to map emergent use cases and behaviors in Ukraine.

A recent video has gone viral after showing two artificial intelligence (AI) agents talking—not in human language, but in a code designed specifically for machines.

The clip, shared in a February 25 post X, features a mobile phone and a laptop running these AI agents.

One AI starts by introducing itself and asking for help with a reservation. The other responds by confirming it is also AI and suggests switching to “Gibberlink mode”, a communication system created by Meta engineers Anton Pidkuiko and Boris Starkov.

AI agents like these operate independently, processing information and taking action based on their goals. Starkov explained in a LinkedIn post that the idea behind this system is efficiency. He stated:

We wanted to show that in the world where AI agents can make and take phone calls, they would occasionally talk to each other — and generating human-like speech for that would be a waste of compute, money, time, and environment.

He added that as soon as AI systems detect they are speaking to another AI, switching to a faster, optimized protocol makes more sense.

Gibberlink makes this possible by using GGWave, a data transmission system that relies on sound, similar to how dial-up modems worked in the 1980s. Pidkuiko and Starkov chose this approach because it is stable and convenient.

Some viewers questioned whether the video was real, but Starkov said that AI voice company ElevenLabs reviewed the code and confirmed its legitimacy.

On February 27, OpenAI has introduced GPT-4.5, following closely behind Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet and xAI’s Grok-3.

The company’s latest model is not about improved reasoning or problem-solving—its main focus is creating a more natural, human-like interaction. However, the cost of GPT-4.5 is surprisingly expensive.

GPT-4.5 comes with a hefty price tag: $75 per million input tokens and $150 per million output tokens. That makes it ten times more expensive than Claude 3.7 Sonnet and far pricier than its predecessor, GPT-4o.

The latest AI model costs 2900% more for inputs and 1300% more for outputs compared to GPT-4o, which charges $2.50 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the cost, stating in a February 27 post on X:

Bad news: It is a giant, expensive model.

At the same time, Altman described GPT-4.5 as “the first model that feels like talking to a thoughtful person“. He also shared that he was genuinely impressed by the advice it gave him in some interactions.

From a technical perspective, the model relies heavily on unsupervised learning, which focuses on improving language fluency and reducing incorrect responses. This required optimizing training methods and developing new systems to handle its scale efficiently.

For now, GPT-4.5 is available to Pro users paying $200 per month. Those on the $20 Plus plan will get access next week.

The Human Element in AI Art: A Contrarian Perspective on Ted Chiang’s View

In his recent essay “Why A.I. Isn’t Going to Make Art” for The New Yorker, Ted Chiang presents a cautious, if not skeptical, view of artificial intelligence’s role in art, suggesting that AI cannot truly create art because it lacks the capacity to make nuanced decisions and lacks intentionality. 

However, this perspective may be overlooking the broader potential of AI in the art world, particularly when it is consistently guided by human creativity, artistry, and intention.

The Role of Human Choice in AI Art

Ted Chiang argues that art is about making choices, and that AI, which processes inputs based on vast datasets and algorithms, inherently lacks this capability. He posits that because AI Art involves fewer choices by the creator, it lacks the depth and intention of human-made art. This view, however, underestimates the extent to which human artists are integral to the AI Art creation process, because AI Art is human-made.

AI tools such as DALL-E, Midjourney, Runway, and ChatGPT are not standalone artists but instruments that require human intention and operation. The choices an artist makes in conceptualizing, formulating a prompt, adjusting parameters, and selecting the final output from multiple iterations involve a high degree of creativity and decision-making. These tools extend an artist’s capability to explore new aesthetic territories and conceptual ideas that might be impossible or impractical to realize with traditional methods.

The Evolution of Artistic Media

Throughout history, new technologies have always influenced art. Initially viewed merely as a mechanical recording device, photography evolved into a rich artistic medium as artists explored its potential beyond simple replication of reality. Similarly, digital tools and AI are emerging as new mediums through which artists can express themselves. Just as darkroom techniques in film photography were mastered, digital tools are being refined by artists to create works that are as intentional and nuanced as those created with brushes, paint, ink, and even CGI.
