The sudden shutdown of Huione Guarantee has sent shockwaves across the digital guarantee market, a shadowy network involving countless online fraudsters, money launderers, and brokers of stolen information in Southeast Asia and China.

Despite this disruption, many Telegram-based marketplaces with similar operations remain unaffected and are actively growing.

Vendors Shift to Tudou

According to blockchain intelligence firm Elliptic’s latest report, Huione Guarantee’s activity has come to a halt, but its exit has triggered a migration. Vendors are being steered toward Tudou Guarantee, which has absorbed a large share of Huione’s transactions.

Before its abrupt shutdown, Huione Guarantee was operated by the Cambodia-based Huione Group. It was originally launched in 2021 with the intention of facilitating legitimate transactions involving assets like cars and real estate. Over time, however, the platform’s listings shifted focus. Leading up to its closure, much of Huione Guarantee’s activity seems geared toward supporting cyber scam operations,

The authorities finally dismantled Huione Guarantee on May 13, 2025. This Telegram-based platform processed over $27 billion in transactions, mostly involving tools and services for large-scale online scams like pig butchering. Its downfall followed a detailed investigation by Elliptic, which led Telegram to delete thousands of related channels and ban associated user accounts.

Still, Huione Guarantee represented just one node within a sprawling network of Chinese-language guarantee marketplaces. These platforms, thriving on Telegram, allow the exchange of illicit goods such as stolen data, fraudulent tech tools, and money laundering services, which are all vital to scam operations.

Huione’s USDT Activity Nears Zero

Transactions are conducted entirely in Tether’s USDT stablecoin, which ensures the ease of movement and pseudo-anonymity. In fact, Tether froze a Huione-linked wallet in July 2024 due to suspected ties to the North Korean hacking entity, Lazarus Group. After Telegram removed Huione’s public channels and usernames, the platform formally shut down, advising vendors to migrate to Tudou Guarantee.

Initially, Huione claimed it would continue facilitating private escrow services, but by late May, it announced a full cessation of operations. Elliptic said that its blockchain data confirmed this exit, as incoming USDT flows to Huione’s wallets plummeted to “negligible levels.”

Dark market activity on Telegram persists despite $27B Huione ban – Elliptic https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dark-market-activity-on-telegram-persists-despite-27b-huione-ban-elliptic/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dark-market-activity-on-telegram-persists-despite-27b-huione-ban-elliptic/#respond Tue, 24 Jun 2025 02:09:33 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/dark-market-activity-on-telegram-persists-despite-27b-huione-ban-elliptic/

Telegram-based dark markets rapidly filled the gap left by Huione Guarantee after the $27 billion marketplace disappeared on May 13, according to a June 23 Elliptic report.

Elliptic noted that Telegram banned thousands of Huione Guarantee channels and usernames once researchers traced billions of USDT-denominated sales to pig-butchering scams. However, data shows that merchants immediately moved to Tudou Guarantee, a rival in which Huione owns a 30% stake.

On-chain data recorded incoming USDT at Huione falling to near zero after the ban, while Tudou’s user count more than doubled, with inflows matching Huione’s pre-shutdown volumes.

Guarantee markets operate in Chinese on Telegram and settle exclusively in USDT. Vendors supply stolen data, money laundering pathways, and other services essential to large-scale online fraud.

The escrow model lets buyers and sellers resolve disputes without exposing real identities, and Tether’s dollar peg eliminates local currency volatility.

Distinct payment rail from Huione Pay

Observers sometimes confuse Huione Guarantee with Huione Pay, a Cambodia-based payment firm still processing large USDT volumes.

Elliptic separated the two through wallet analysis and noted that Huione Pay’s traffic remained high even after FinCEN labeled the parent Huione Group “a financial institution of primary money laundering concern” and proposed cutting its US access.

Elliptic tracked more than 30 active Guarantee markets and warned about fake venues that target inexperienced criminals.

Tudou led the post-shutdown surge, but smaller competitors also gained users as merchants duplicated listings across platforms.

Ecosystem adapts to channel bans

The closure of the Huione Guarantee sent temporary shock waves through a network of hundreds of thousands of scammers, intermediaries, and brokers across Southeast Asia and China.

Elliptic’s data showed no enduring decline in overall Guarantee-market volume one month later, indicating that liquidity migrated swiftly to replacement channels.

The report concluded that coordinated, sustained, removals will be required to disrupt an ecosystem built on Telegram escrow and USDT settlements.

Huione Guarantee’s downfall disrupted one node, but the broader dark market structure continues to expand within the messaging app.

$200M Crypto Scam: OFAC Sanctions Funnull as Experts Find Ties to Huione Pay, Triad Nexus https://earlybirdsinvest.com/200m-crypto-scam-ofac-sanctions-funnull-as-experts-find-ties-to-huione-pay-triad-nexus/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/200m-crypto-scam-ofac-sanctions-funnull-as-experts-find-ties-to-huione-pay-triad-nexus/#respond Sun, 01 Jun 2025 00:31:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/200m-crypto-scam-ofac-sanctions-funnull-as-experts-find-ties-to-huione-pay-triad-nexus/

The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned Funnull Technology Inc., a technology firm headquartered in the Philippines, and its administrator, Liu Lizhi.

The company has been implicated in running a “pig butchering” scam.

$200M Scam Uncovered

According to the official press release, Funnull has stolen over $200 million from American investors. OFAC has also placed two of Funnull’s cryptocurrency addresses on its Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) List to restrict their access to financial systems.

In response, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) issued a public advisory, outlining key technical indicators, such as infrastructure components and IP addresses tied to Funnull’s scam operations.

Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender, in an official statement, said

“Today’s action underscores our focus on disrupting the criminal enterprises, like Funnull, that enable these cyber scams and deprive Americans of their hard-earned savings. The United States is strongly committed to ensuring the continued growth of a legitimate, safe, and secure digital asset ecosystem, including the use of virtual currencies and similar technologies.”

Connection to Triad Nexus and Huione Pay

According to the findings by blockchain intelligence Chainalysis, Funnull Technology Inc. enabled cybercriminals by purchasing IP addresses in bulk from major cloud service providers and selling them to operators of fraudulent investment platforms. This infrastructure allowed scammers to host malicious websites that mimicked legitimate investment platforms, thereby deceiving victims into investing in non-existent opportunities.

Funnull was a central player in a network dubbed by security researchers as “Triad Nexus,” which includes more than 200,000 unique hostnames, many of which are associated with investment scams, fake trading apps, and suspect gambling networks. OFAC identified two crypto addresses linked to Funnull Technology Inc., used for receiving cybercriminal payments.

These addresses are tied to scam-related infrastructure and show connections to Huione Pay, which was recently flagged by FinCEN as a major money laundering concern.

Further investigation by blockchain security firm Elliptic revealed that the two addresses in question received more than $4 million in total.

Huione Group Faces US Ban for Alleged Ties to North Korea's Lazarus Group https://earlybirdsinvest.com/huione-group-faces-us-ban-for-alleged-ties-to-north-koreas-lazarus-group/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/huione-group-faces-us-ban-for-alleged-ties-to-north-koreas-lazarus-group/#respond Sun, 04 May 2025 07:36:25 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/huione-group-faces-us-ban-for-alleged-ties-to-north-koreas-lazarus-group/

The US Treasury Department has announced plans to stop Cambodia’s Huione Group from accessing the US banking system.

Officials believe the company has played a role in helping North Korea’s Lazarus Group hide stolen cryptocurrency.

On May 1, the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) proposed a new rule. It would prevent US banks from opening or keeping accounts connected to Huione Group. The plan also includes stopping foreign banks from moving money through US accounts on Huione’s behalf.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the group has become a “marketplace of choice” for hackers like Lazarus, who have taken billions of dollars from US citizens. He added that cutting off Huione’s access to banking would make it harder for criminals to hide illegal funds.

Though Huione Group does not have direct accounts with American banks, it works with foreign banks that do. This indirect link still allows it to move funds connected to illegal activities.

According to FinCEN, between August 2021 and January 2025, Huione helped move at least $4 billion in illegal funds. Over $36 million of this came from so-called “pig butchering” scams, where victims are tricked into fake online investments. Another $37 million was linked to hacking groups connected to North Korea.

The Treasury said that Haowang Guarantee has turned Huione Group into a central place for criminals to exchange stolen cryptocurrency for cash.

The proposed rule will be open for public comment for 30 days before it can be put into effect.

Recently, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) issued a warning to inactive cryptocurrency exchanges. What did the warning say? Read the full story.
