Investors may not realize it, but today (Aug. 14) is one of the most important days of the entire quarter. While earnings season is critical in helping investors learn about the operating health of America’s leading businesses, Form 13F filings, which are due today, are equally invaluable.

A 13F is a required filing due no later than 45 calendar days following the end to a quarter for institutional investors with at least $100 million in assets under management. It allows investors to track which stocks Wall Street’s smartest money managers purchased and sold in the latest quarter (in this instance, the June-ended quarter), as well as identify which trends have the attention of successful fund managers.

Although Warren Buffett is the stock market’s most followed billionaire investor, he’s far from the only billionaire known for their outsized investment returns. For instance, Coatue Management’s Philippe Laffont, who’s been a big investor of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, is known for spotting phenomenal deals hiding in plain sight.

Laffont’s approach to the evolution of AI has been particularly interesting. Specifically, he’s pared down his fund’s stake in the face of the AI movement, Nvidia (NVDA -0.83%), for eight straight quarters, and has been buying shares of another historically cheap AI stock hand over fist.

Coatue Management’s billionaire chief has sold 83% of his fund’s Nvidia stake

While some billionaire money managers bid adieu to AI-graphics processing unit (GPU) colossus Nvidia many quarters ago, Coatue Management billionaire boss has been paring down his fund’s stake with some degree of consistency for two full years. Accounting for Nvidia’s historic 10-for-1 stock split in June 2024, Laffont has overseen an 83% reduction in his fund’s position in this AI powerhouse:

  • Q1 2023: 49,802,020 shares of Nvidia
  • Q2 2023: 46,449,700 shares
  • Q3 2023: 45,410,400 shares
  • Q4 2023: 43,222,010 shares
  • Q1 2024: 13,851,410 shares
  • Q2 2024: 13,754,447 shares
  • Q3 2024: 10,138,161 shares
  • Q4 2024: 10,006,488 shares
  • Q1 2025: 8,545,835 shares

With Coatue’s average top-20 position held for roughly 21 months, as of the end of March, it demonstrates that Laffont and his top advisors aren’t shy about locking in gains when presented with the opportunity. Nvidia shares catapulting more than twelvefold since the start of 2023 has given Coatue’s brightest investor plenty of reason to cash in his chips.

The concern with Philippe Laffont’s persistent selling spanning eight quarters is there may be more than profit-taking on his mind.

For instance, while the addressable opportunity for AI is sky-high, historical precedent shows that every next-big-thing trend for three decades has endured a bubble-bursting event early in its expansion. Investors have a tendency to overhype the utility and early stage adoption rates of new technologies, which eventually leads to these lofty expectations not being met. No company has been a more direct beneficiary of the evolution of AI than Nvidia, which suggests it would potentially be the hardest hit if the AI bubble were to burst.

Another possible consideration for Philippe Laffont is growing competition in the AI-GPU space. Make no mistake about it, Nvidia’s Hopper (H100) and Blackwell GPUs are at the top of the pedestal, in terms of compute ability. But this doesn’t mean Hopper and Blackwell won’t endure headwinds in the coming quarters and years.

Specifically, internal competition could prove to be a thorn in Nvidia’s side. Many of its leading customers by net sales are developing AI-GPUs and solutions for their data centers. Even though these chips are slower than Nvidia’s and they pose no external competitive threat, they’re considerably cheaper, more readily accessible, and capable of taking up valuable data-center real estate. In short, these chips could crush Nvidia’s pristine pricing power and gross margin.

Nvidia’s valuation is worrisome, as well. Historically, megacap companies have peaked with price-to-sales (P/S) ratios of roughly 30 to 40. Nvidia is tipping the scales at a P/S ratio of more than 30, as of the closing bell on Aug. 11.

Billionaire Philippe Laffont can’t stop buying this cash-rich AI stock

On the other end of the spectrum is a historically cheap and cash-rich artificial intelligence stock that Coatue Management’s billionaire chief can’t stop buying. I’m talking about China-based Alibaba Group (BABA 3.73%).

When 2024 came to a close, Alibaba was a relatively forgettable holding in Coatue’s portfolio, with just 192,728 shares held. But during the first quarter, Laffont came close to 20Xing this stake to 3,801,703 shares, based on the filed 13F.

While Alibaba’s growth ambitions very much rely on AI, this isn’t the company’s foundational operating segment responsible for most of its cash flow. Alibaba laid its roots through its e-commerce operations in China.

Whereas online retail sales have matured in the U.S., a burgeoning middle class in the world’s No. 2 economy by gross domestic product can generate high-octane e-commerce sales growth for the foreseeable future. Based on an analysis from DBS Treasures, Taobao and Tmall combine to account for a 41% share of China’s e-commerce space. These platforms should have little issue continuing to generate bountiful cash flow that Alibaba can redirect to faster-growing and/or higher-margin initiatives.

However, e-commerce isn’t the only arena that Alibaba Group is leading. According to estimates from tech analysis firm Canalys, Alibaba Cloud reined in 33% of Mainland China’s cloud infrastructure service spending during the first quarter, which was nearly double the 18% share Huawei Cloud earned as the No. 2 cloud infrastructure services provider.

Alibaba is aggressively incorporating generative AI solutions into its cloud platform and giving its clients access to the tools needed to build and train large language models. The expectation is that these AI solutions will enhance demand (and margins) for Alibaba Cloud.

Something else that’s likely attracted Laffont to Alibaba is the company’s capital-return program. It closed out fiscal 2025 (ended March 31) with $51.6 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, along with $7.4 billion in equity securities and $6 billion in restricted cash. When combined with the cash flow being generated from Alibaba’s numerous operating segments, there’s more than enough capital available for share repurchases and dividends.

The proverbial cherry on the sundae is that Alibaba Group stock is historically inexpensive at an estimated 11 times forward-year earnings. This is modestly lower than its average forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio over the past half-decade, and it stands out amid a historically pricey stock market.

Thinking About Whether to Invest in Real Estate or the Stock Market? Here's What Has Historically Been the Better Investment. https://earlybirdsinvest.com/thinking-about-whether-to-invest-in-real-estate-or-the-stock-market-heres-what-has-historically-been-the-better-investment/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/thinking-about-whether-to-invest-in-real-estate-or-the-stock-market-heres-what-has-historically-been-the-better-investment/#respond Fri, 27 Jun 2025 13:20:12 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/thinking-about-whether-to-invest-in-real-estate-or-the-stock-market-heres-what-has-historically-been-the-better-investment/

Putting money into real estate and stocks are two popular ways to grow your wealth. Home values have risen significantly, especially with demand being hot in the past few years. A red-hot housing market has inflated values across the globe. And while things have cooled of late, prices are still much higher than they were just a few years ago.

Investing in stocks, however, is also a traditionally safe investment option. The S&P 500, for instance, has averaged an annual long-run return of 10%. Through the power of compounding, those gains can add up significantly over time. After 10 years, a 10% compound annual return would mean your investment is up to more than 2.5 times its original value. After 20 years, it would swell to 6.7 times its original value.

But which of these investment options is better for the long haul: real estate or stocks? Here’s what the data says.

A person with their family holding keys to a house.

The stock market has been the winner, and it’s not even close

According to data going back to the start of 1995, the Case-Shiller Home Price Index, which tracks housing prices, has risen by more than 310%. By comparison, the S&P 500 index has increased by more than 1,200%. And when you include reinvested dividends, the total returns are more than 2,200%.

^SPX Chart

S&P 500 vs the housing market data by YCharts

Different housing markets, will, of course, experience different returns. But when taking a broad look at the two investments, it’s evident that the stock market as a whole is generally the better long-term investment than real estate.

Profits on real estate can look incredible, and that’s because to buy a home you’re investing hundreds of thousands of dollars into it. In some markets, you might not be able to even buy a home for less than $1 million. With so much invested into an asset, the profits can be significant, whereas with stocks, investments are typically smaller.

But if, for example, you invested $500,000 into the S&P 500 and it simply rose at its long-run average of 10% for five years, then you’d be sitting on a profit of more than $300,000. If you invested $1 million, then the profit would be more than $600,000. Now these kinds of profits start to become more eye-catching, and that’s because the original investment is so significant.

Why investing in stocks can make more sense than investing in real estate

The large numbers from real estate profits can make it seem as though investing in housing can yield better returns. But when you adjust for the size of the investment and you strictly look at the percentage return, the story looks much different, and it makes it more evident that investing in stocks may be the better option.

But there are also other factors that tip the scale in favor of stocks, including liquidity. With stocks, it can be easy to get in and get out of an investment while incurring minimal costs. Investing in real estate, however, can be both time-consuming and costly. Plus, you are tying up money into a single asset whereas with stocks you can diversify across multiple companies or through 500 of the leading stocks as with the S&P 500 index.

Investing in the stock market has yielded better returns over the years and it’s a safer long-term strategy. Even if you’re not sure what to invest in, tracking the S&P 500 through an exchange-traded fund can be an easy way to invest in the stock market while taking on minimal risk.

Catalyst That Historically Fuels Explosive Rallies Could Send Bitcoin Surging to $186,000, Says Jamie Coutts https://earlybirdsinvest.com/catalyst-that-historically-fuels-explosive-rallies-could-send-bitcoin-surging-to-186000-says-jamie-coutts/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/catalyst-that-historically-fuels-explosive-rallies-could-send-bitcoin-surging-to-186000-says-jamie-coutts/#respond Thu, 24 Apr 2025 10:20:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/catalyst-that-historically-fuels-explosive-rallies-could-send-bitcoin-surging-to-186000-says-jamie-coutts/

Real Vision’s chief crypto analyst Jamie Coutts believes one catalyst could catapult Bitcoin (BTC) to nearly double its price in months.

Coutts says the total global liquidity has reached a new all-time high level of just under $140 trillion after a decades-long period of contraction.

According to Coutts, global liquidity is what has “historically fueled explosive asset price rallies.”

Real Vision’s chief crypto analyst says the total global liquidity is set to continue climbing and this could trigger an increase of around 98% in the price of Bitcoin.

“With central banks clearly behind the curve, we could see global liquidity rise by approximately 10% or $13 trillion over the next 12 months. This would equate to $186,000 BTC using a blended regression model.

Those who held steady and accumulated during recent market turbulence should be better for it in what comes next.”

Bitcoin is trading at $93,772 at time of writing.

The crypto analyst further says that Bitcoin’s volatility levels are moving in an inversely correlated manner relative to traditional assets.

“It has been patently clear to me since 2022 that while Bitcoin’s volatility is decreasing, what is more striking is that traditional assets are becoming more volatile. Volatility isn’t the enemy, by the way, provided you’re being compensated by higher returns.

That is not the case for Bonds and Equities relative to Bitcoin. And this has massive implications for asset allocation and portfolio construction going forward.”

According to Coutts’ chart, based on data from the last four months, Bitcoin has recorded a volatility-normalized return of -7.12 compared to the S&P 500 index’s -45.08. The volatility-normalized return is a performance metric that compares the return on investment of an asset to its volatility – the higher the figure, the better the risk-adjusted return.

Since 2022, Bitcoin has recorded a volatility-normalized return of 131.89 compared to the S&P 500 index’s -37.37.

Bloomberg Analyst Predicts Massive but Historically ‘Normal’ Market Crashes for Bitcoin, Oil and Stock Market https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bloomberg-analyst-predicts-massive-but-historically-normal-market-crashes-for-bitcoin-oil-and-stock-market/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bloomberg-analyst-predicts-massive-but-historically-normal-market-crashes-for-bitcoin-oil-and-stock-market/#respond Tue, 22 Apr 2025 01:34:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bloomberg-analyst-predicts-massive-but-historically-normal-market-crashes-for-bitcoin-oil-and-stock-market/

Bloomberg commodity strategist Mike McGlone says that there’s a chance of a massive correction in US markets that could pummel the price of Bitcoin (BTC), oil and stocks.

In a post on the social media platform X, McGlone says the US has a “self-correcting mechanism” that may push back against President Trump’s tariff war, which could create market chaos.

The analyst shares a chart suggesting that the S&P 500 vs. GDP ratio and the S&P 500 vs. gold ratio are both at elevated levels – a setup that has historically marked stock market crashes, such as in the 1930s, the late 1990s, and 2008.

Such an event, or “reversion,” could result in significant drops in stocks, Bitcoin oil, copper and bonds, according to McGlone.

“America’s self-correcting mechanism is unstoppable. If unprecedented tariffs and austerity don’t work, pushback will come in the next elections. If the great rebalance attempt works, it could reset world order underpinnings for the coming century.

The problem is that the discombobulation is coming with US stock market cap vs. GDP and the rest of the world, the highest in about 100 years.

My normal reversion base case:

– 50% drawdown in the US stock market

– $40 a barrel crude oil

– $3 per pound copper

– 3% US 10-year yield

– $10,000 Bitcoin, 90% drawdowns in most of the millions of cryptocurrencies

– $4,000 gold, the outlier due to not being simple reversion”

Image
Source: Mike McGlone/X

While McGlone’s predicted drawdowns appear severe, the analyst says that the magnitude of the potential downside moves is “normal” based on historical terms.

At time of writing, Bitcoin is trading for $87,529.

‘The Bearish Structure Is Crumbling’: Analytics Firm Says a Historically Bullish Signal for Bitcoin Is Flashing https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-bearish-structure-is-crumbling-analytics-firm-says-a-historically-bullish-signal-for-bitcoin-is-flashing/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-bearish-structure-is-crumbling-analytics-firm-says-a-historically-bullish-signal-for-bitcoin-is-flashing/#respond Fri, 18 Apr 2025 13:31:18 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/the-bearish-structure-is-crumbling-analytics-firm-says-a-historically-bullish-signal-for-bitcoin-is-flashing/

Crypto analytics firm Swissblock is saying that the bearish trend for Bitcoin (BTC) could be over.

Swissblock says Bitcoin’s bearish structure is “crumbling” as the crypto king breaks out of a bearish compression pattern into a bullish quadrant – a price zone that signals likely upward price momentum.

“Historically, this signals more upside, even a brief dip won’t stop it.”

Source: Swissblock/X

Swissblock says the price of Bitcoin held relatively steady earlier this week as equities were declining in value. According to the analytics firm, a low-risk regime favorable to risk assets is approaching, and that will provide a “perfect setup” for the crypto king. Swissblock, however, says that before going up, Bitcoin could fall by around 5% from the current level to about $80,000.

Source: Swissblock/X

The analytics firm further says that long-term holders of Bitcoin are holding firm and are not selling out of “fear.” Citing data from Swissblock Technologies, the analytics firm says that the worst sell-off by long-term holders has ended and was not as severe as what occurred in July and August of 2024.

Source: Swissblock/X

With regard to Bitcoin whales, Swissblock says that the holdings of the large holders of BTC have reached a one-year high after resuming the accumulation process this month.

“Whales are back, nearing all-time high BTC holdings since the halving.

Strong hands are accumulating faster, holding price but, of course, waiting for the best bid.”

Source: Swissblock/X

The fourth Bitcoin halving occurred on April 19th of 2024. Bitcoin is trading at $84,490 at time of writing.

According to a recent X post by crypto analyst Ali Martinez, Ethereum (ETH) is inching closer to a critical demand zone that has historically marked market bottoms. Notably, ETH has declined by more than 21% over the past two weeks.

Ethereum About To See Trend Reversal?

Ethereum may soon witness a relief rally, as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap nears a key demand zone that has historically marked market bottoms and offered strong buying opportunities.

Related Reading

Sharing his analysis, Martinez posted the following chart, illustrating how ETH is likely approaching the -1 standard deviation pricing band based on Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) Extreme Deviation Pricing Bands.

ali
Source: ali_charts on X

According to the chart, the -1 standard deviation pricing band lies around $1,387, while ETH’s realized price hovers around $2,005. The last time ETH touched this band – back in July 2022 – it marked a local market bottom.

For the uninitiated, MVRV Extreme Deviation Pricing Bands are on-chain metrics that help identify potential market tops or bottoms by measuring how far ETH’s current market value deviates from its realized value. These bands highlight historically significant overvalued or undervalued zones, often aligning with periods of extreme investor sentiment or price reversals.

As ETH nears the -1 standard deviation pricing band, it suggests the asset may be significantly undervalued at its current price. Fellow crypto analyst TraderPA appears to support Martinez’s view.

In an X post, TraderPA shared a weekly Ethereum chart showing that ETH’s price decline aligns with a low Stochastic Relative Strength Index (RSI) value – indicating the cryptocurrency may be oversold following the recent sell-off.

traderPA
Source: TraderPA on X

The Stochastic RSI is a momentum indicator that applies the stochastic oscillator formula to RSI  values rather than price, making it more sensitive and responsive to short-term movements. Unlike the standard RSI – which ranges from 0 to 100 – the Stochastic RSI ranges between 0 and 1, helping traders identify overbought or oversold conditions.

Whales Losing Confidence In ETH

While Martinez and TraderPA’s analyses suggest ETH may be undervalued, recent whale activity points to a possible loss of confidence. A previously dormant ETH whale dumped 10,702 ETH after nearly two years of inactivity, signaling weakening conviction among large investors.

Related Reading

Interestingly, the whale had originally received ETH back in 2016, when it was valued at just $8. Despite holding through the 2021 peak near $4,000, the recent price drop seems to have triggered a significant sell-off.

Additionally, Martinez’s latest analysis suggests that ETH could drop to $1,200, as the asset continues to break below multiple key support levels. At press time, ETH trades at $1,553, up 5.5% in the past 24 hours.
