Remy St Felix, the man who led a group responsible for violent break-ins targeting crypto owners, is facing an extra seven years in prison after attacking someone who testified against him.

St Felix had already been sentenced to 47 years for organizing multiple home robberies where victims were tied up and threatened for access to their digital assets.

According to a press release from federal authorities, the assault took place at a detention center in North Carolina on October 8, 2024.

Despite the witness being restrained with handcuffs and leg chains, St Felix repeatedly punched him in the head, face, and body. During the attack, he blamed the man for the long sentence he had received and called him a “rat”.

Officials also reported that St Felix later bragged about the incident in phone calls with his girlfriend and mother.

On May 6, 2025, St Felix admitted guilt to one charge of retaliating against a witness. Of the new seven-year sentence, three years will run at the same time as his earlier term. This means his time in prison has been extended by nearly four years.

St Felix had initially been found guilty of nine offenses, including kidnapping and using a gun while committing violent crimes. He and thirteen others were accused of targeting people they believed held valuable cryptocurrency. Together, the group stole roughly $3.5 million worth of crypto assets.

The court also ordered St Felix to repay $524,000 to account for the value of the stolen funds linked to his actions.

$91M in Bitcoin Vanishes in Social Engineering Heist: Funds Already on the Move https://earlybirdsinvest.com/91m-in-bitcoin-vanishes-in-social-engineering-heist-funds-already-on-the-move/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/91m-in-bitcoin-vanishes-in-social-engineering-heist-funds-already-on-the-move/#respond Sat, 23 Aug 2025 23:01:09 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/91m-in-bitcoin-vanishes-in-social-engineering-heist-funds-already-on-the-move/

Social engineering scams have proved to be one of the damaging attack vectors in crypto, which are capable of bypassing technical defenses and draining platforms or users of staggering sums.

In the latest development, a victim lost 783 Bitcoin, worth approximately $91 million, in such an attack.

Hackers Impersonate Wallet Support

Prominent on-chain investigator ZachXBT reported that the attackers impersonated both exchange and hardware wallet customer support. Blockchain data shows the thief has already laundered the stolen funds through the privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet Wasabi.

The incident coincidentally occurred on the one-year anniversary of the $243 million Genesis Creditor theft.

ZachXBT explained that large-scale breaches have left massive amounts of personal information exposed online, which makes it easier for threat actors to exploit victims. By leveraging these data leaks, attackers can convincingly impersonate exchange or wallet support, gain trust, and ultimately carry out such scams.

When asked by a community member how one can avoid falling victim to social engineering, ZachXBT offered a blunt but practical piece of advice: treat every call or email as a potential scam by default.

Social Engineering: A Dominant Attack Vector

TRM Labs recently highlighted the growing dominance of social engineering in crypto-related thefts. The firm found that the first half of 2025 witnessed a record $2.1 billion stolen through hacks and exploits. Over 80% of losses were tied to infrastructure intrusions such as compromised private keys and seed phrases, which were often made possible through social engineering tactics or insider threats.

The average hack size also doubled compared to 2024, as it hit $30 million during the same period. TRM noted that the Bybit incident in February, attributed to North Korean state-sponsored actors, was the largest crypto hack in history, as it accounted for nearly 70% of total losses. Beyond that mega theft, dozens of other attacks occurred in January, April, and May, with several exceeding $100 million each.

A cybercrime group named GreedyBear has stolen more than $1 million in cryptocurrency by combining several types of scams, according to an August 7 report from Koi Security.

Researcher Tuval Admoni stated that the group has moved beyond typical scams and is operating at a much larger scale.

While many attackers focus on one method, such as phishing websites or fake browser add-ons, GreedyBear spreads fake browser extensions, builds convincing scam websites, and uses harmful software to steal information from crypto users.

Koi Security found more than 150 of these fake add-ons on the Firefox extension store. They copied the appearance of crypto wallets like MetaMask, TronLink, Exodus, and Rabby Wallet.

To avoid getting caught, GreedyBear first uploads a harmless version of the extension to pass store checks. After it is approved and gets good reviews, they update it to include code that can steal users’ wallet details.

Admoni said, “These fake tools collect login details from users by pretending to be real wallet interfaces”.

The report also explained that GreedyBear has built over 650 separate tools that target people who use crypto wallets. Additionally, the group runs fake websites that look like exchanges or customer support pages. They also use malware to change wallet addresses or steal copied data during transactions.

Admoni stated in the report:

Most groups pick a lane, maybe they do browser extensions, or they focus on ransomware, or they run scam phishing sites. GreedyBear said, ‘Why not all three?’ And it worked. Spectacularly.

Recently, cybersecurity firm CTM360 reported that scammers are running a campaign called “ClickTok”. What is it? Read the full story.

Sumit Gupta, CEO of Indian crypto exchange CoinDCX, has publicly denied reports suggesting the company is in acquisition talks with US-based crypto platform Coinbase.

The speculation emerged after a Livemint report claimed that negotiations were underway between the two crypto trading platforms.

However, Gupta quickly dismissed the claims in a July 29 post on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“Ignore the rumours! CoinDCX is ‘super focused’ on building for India’s crypto story and not up for sale!”

Mridul Gupta, a co-founder and senior executive at CoinDCX, also shared this view and labeled the report “false.” He noted that rather than planning an exit, the company is actively expanding and recruiting talent across various departments.

Coinbase is the largest US-based crypto trading platform. The firm halted its Indian operations in 2022 under regulatory pressure. re-entered India in March after it secured a key regulatory nod from India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

Since then, the exchange has made no further announcements about its plan for the Asian country.

CoinDCX security breach

The rumors surfaced after a $44 million security breach on CoinDCX, allegedly orchestrated by North Korea’s Lazarus Group.

Blockchain analytics firm Cyvers identified attack patterns consistent with previous Lazarus operations, including cross-chain bridges and Tornado Cash to obscure fund flows.

According to Cyvers, the attackers likely exploited exposed API keys or misconfigured backend systems, allowing them to transfer assets from the Solana blockchain to Ethereum and launder them anonymously.

In response to the exploit, CoinDCX introduced an $11 million bounty initiative offering up to 25% of recovered assets. The program aims to engage ethical hackers, researchers, and blockchain firms in asset recovery efforts.

Despite this attack, CoinDCX remains one of India’s largest digital asset platforms, managing over $161 million in customer assets and processing around $14 million in daily trading volume, according to CoinMarketCap data

Hackers counting crypto

The Taiwanese cryptocurrency exchange BitoPro claims the North Korean hacking group Lazarus is behind a cyberattack that led to the theft of $11,000,000 worth of cryptocurrency on May 8, 2025.

The company has attributed the attack to Lazarus based on the evidence recovered from its internal investigations. It notes that the attack patterns and methodology closely resemble those used in past cyberattacks.

“The attack methodology bears resemblance to patterns observed in multiple past international major incidents, including illicit transfers from global bank SWIFT systems and asset theft incidents from major international cryptocurrency exchanges,” reads the announcement.

“These attacks are attributed to the North Korean hacking organization Lazarus Group.”

BitoPro is a cryptocurrency exchange that caters primarily to Taiwanese users, supporting fiat deposits and withdrawals in TWD and a selection of crypto assets.

It has over 800,000 registered users and a daily trading volume of roughly $30 million.

On May 8, 2025, during a hot wallet system update, hackers performed unauthorized withdrawals from an old hot wallet across multiple blockchains, including Ethereum, Tron, Solana, and Polygon.

After the theft, stolen funds were laundered through DEXs and mixers like Tornado Cash, ThorChain, and Wasabi Wallet.

BitoPro was slow in admitting the incident, only confirming it publicly on June 2, noting that all operations were unaffected and impacted hot wallets were replenished by available reserves.

The investigation into the hack now confirmed that there was no internal involvement, even though the attackers launched a social engineering attack and implanted malware on the device of an employee managing cloud operations.

Through this infection, the attackers hijacked AWS session tokens to bypass multi-factor authentication (MFA) and gain control over BitPro’s cloud infrastructure.

Next, the command-and-control (C2) server delivered commands to the implant that injected scripts into the hot wallet host as the attack was being prepared.

When the wallet was upgraded and assets transferred, the attackers stole crypto while simulating normal operational behavior to evade immediate detection.

Once BitoPro detected the compromise, they shut down the hot wallet system and rotated the cryptographic keys. However, roughly $11 million worth of cryptocurrency had already been stolen.

The company informed the applicable authorities and engaged with an external cybersecurity expert to investigate the incident, a process completed on June 11.

The North Korean Lazarus group is notorious for targeting cryptocurrency and decentralized finance entities. The hacking group is believed to be responsible for record-breaking digital asset heists, most recently, the $1.5 billion theft from Bybit.

A short visit to London ended in major losses for a US tourist who unknowingly gave a fake Uber driver access to his crypto accounts, according to a May 21 report by MyLondon.

Jacob Irwin-Cline, from Portland, Oregon, had just finished a night out at The Roxy nightclub in Soho on May 9. After leaving around 1:30 AM, he called an Uber to get back.

Footage later showed he had entered the wrong vehicle. Irwin-Cline also noted that he accepted a cigarette when offered by the driver.

By the time Irwin-Cline was left alone in an unfamiliar part of London, the attacker had already transferred large amounts of digital currency from his accounts.

Irwin-Cline mentioned that he attempted to obtain toxicology results from the hospital and the police, but was told that no tests had been conducted.

According to police, the person did not hack into any systems. They used the unlocked phone and direct access to get into the wallets. About $123,000 worth of cryptocurrency was taken, including $50,000 in Bitcoin

Paraguay law enforcement thwarts crypto miner heist, deports arrested suspects https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paraguay-law-enforcement-thwarts-crypto-miner-heist-deports-arrested-suspects/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paraguay-law-enforcement-thwarts-crypto-miner-heist-deports-arrested-suspects/#respond Sat, 17 May 2025 14:37:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/paraguay-law-enforcement-thwarts-crypto-miner-heist-deports-arrested-suspects/

Authorities in Paraguay deported three individuals and arrested another in connection with a May 15 attempted robbery at a crypto mining operation in Coronel Bogado, a town and district in Paraguay.

According to statements by prosecutor Irene Rolón made during a May 15 interview on local news outlet Monumental TV, the group allegedly targeted computer servers used in crypto mining and gained unauthorized access to a locked section of the facility.

The incident was discovered after local authorities received a local tip about a secured room within the mining site. Upon opening the door, they encountered four Chinese nationals inside.

Rolón stated that the individuals did not speak Spanish, but authorities could confirm through digital translation tools and documentation that they were from mainland China.

Investigators requested access to the individuals’ passports and discovered that three had entered the country without legal authorization.

Paraguayan authorities summoned Interpol agents and confirmed that the individuals lacked records of legal entry into Paraguay. The group had reportedly entered through Bolivia and Brazil.

Motive and criminal investigation

Authorities suspect the attempted robbery was part of a broader pattern involving a group that regularly targets high-value electronic equipment.

The arrested individual was initially hospitalized in critical condition but later transferred to a general ward. Authorities did not reveal the reason behind his hospitalization.

Investigators have not yet been able to conduct a full interview with him to determine the group’s precise objective. Based on preliminary findings, law enforcement officials believe the group aimed to steal the facility’s servers and other computing hardware.

Authorities are working to identify and locate additional individuals linked to the attempted theft. Rolón said the authorities possess preliminary data that may assist in tracking down the remaining suspects.

The criminal investigation remains active, and the Public Ministry is coordinating efforts with Interpol and immigration authorities.

Unauthorized labor and administrative action

The four individuals told investigators they had been working as programmers for the company operating the mining facility. However, without proper documentation, their employment status remains under investigation.

Rolón also stated that the employer had not yet presented any documentation substantiating the employment relationship. The company’s owner committed to providing the relevant paperwork by May 16.

The prosecutor noted that the expulsion process for the undocumented individuals began immediately after the arrest.

The outcome of ongoing interviews and document review will determine the legal status of the Chinese nationals’ employment and any further charges related to the attempted theft.

Members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are accused of quietly taking over $21 million worth of cryptocurrencies while looking into wrongdoing at Cryptoland, a now-closed crypto exchange.

The situation began when Sina Estavi, Cryptoland’s CEO, was arrested in 2021 on charges of harming Iran’s financial system. This led to the shutdown of the exchange and left over 51,000 users without access to their funds.

Later, agents from the IRGC’s intelligence and economic crimes units were given control of the seized assets. But instead of protecting the funds, several of them allegedly moved tokens to wallets under their control and sold them.

Iran International, a Persian-language satellite television channel, named Mehdi Hajipour and Mehdi Badi as central figures in the scheme. Hajipour was found to have moved millions in BRG tokens, the platform’s native coin. Reports say his personal wealth jumped from around $40,000 to over $14 million within four months.

The situation became more serious when Hajipour was caught taking a $10,000 payment from Estavi. Estavi thought he was buying back some of the stolen tokens through a third party, but the buyer was Hajipour using a fake identity.

Two more IRGC members, Majid Jahan Parto and Majid Tabatabaei, were linked to the scheme. Four others are accused of creating fake documents to cover up the transactions. Badi, one of the main suspects, is also related to a former high-ranking IRGC official.
