A firm that specializes in allowing people to compare insurance quotes is preparing to hand $19 million to Americans in a new settlement.

QuoteWizard is accused of violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) by sending text message solicitations to people on the National Do Not Call Registry.

According to the settlement, QuoteWizard is preparing to pay the $19 million without admitting guilt, and the deadline for people to exclude and object to their share is August 5th.

The case was filed by lead plaintiff Joseph Mantha back in 2019, and the final settlement approval hearing is set for September 29th.

No claim form is required for payments, and class members will automatically be paid as long as they don’t exclude themselves.

Class members are expected to receive a minimum of $76 per person, and a dedicated website and toll-free number will be launched with additional details.

Victims of a bank data breach are set to receive up to $3,000 each after a settlement was reached in a class action lawsuit.

According to the settlement administration portal, impacted customers at Arizona-based Evolve Bank & Trust who file a claim and provide documentary evidence of losses resulting from the data breach stand to receive up to $3,000.

A flat cash payment of $20 will also be available but claimants can only choose one or the other, not both.

“In addition to selection one of the Cash Payment options, Settlement Class Members may elect one (1) year of monitoring that will provide the following benefits: Credit Monitoring, real-time alerts, and insurance coverage for up to $1,000,000 for identity theft.”

Claims must be filed by October 30th. A final approval hearing of the settlement will be held on November 14th.

The lawsuit against Evolve Bank & Trust was filed in January and alleges that cybercriminals infiltrated the billion-dollar lender’s information systems and gained access to sensitive and confidential information.

In a notice to customers in July of 2024, Evolve Bank said the data breach had occurred between February and May of 2024.

“…it appears the criminals downloaded information from our databases and a file share that included names, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, and contact information for most of our personal banking customers, as well as customers of our Open Banking partners. We have also learned that personal information relating to our employees was also likely affected.”

Evolve Bank & Trust, which started as First State Bank in 1925, is headquartered in West Memphis, Arizona. It boasts of around $1.6 billion in total assets and has five branches in the US.

US City Handing $12,000 To Families in No Strings Attached Guaranteed Income Project https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-city-handing-12000-to-families-in-no-strings-attached-guaranteed-income-project/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-city-handing-12000-to-families-in-no-strings-attached-guaranteed-income-project/#respond Thu, 29 May 2025 10:50:15 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/us-city-handing-12000-to-families-in-no-strings-attached-guaranteed-income-project/

A US city will be distributing a total of $12,000 in financial assistance to qualified residents as part of a local guaranteed basic income program.

The city of Richmond in Virginia says that starting May 27th, residents can apply for the fourth cohort of the Richmond Resilience Initiative (RRI) Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) program.

For this batch, the RRI will focus on supporting single parents, including guardians with custody, step parents, foster parents and other primary household caregivers. The city says eligible beneficiaries will receive $500 per month for 24 months with no strings attached.

The RRI aims to improve financial stability among working families. The city says the program is part of a growing national movement that seeks to demonstrate the power of direct, unrestricted cash assistance in helping families attain greater financial independence and reduce stress.

According to Richmond’s Office of Community Wealth Building (OCWB), those who participated in the RRI program used their monthly payments to meet essential needs, pay debts, invest in education and create stability for their families.

Says Richmond Mayor Danny Avula,

“The Richmond Resilience Initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to creating a city where families have the stability and support they need to build a better future. This is about trust, dignity, and ensuring our residents have the resources to move forward with confidence.”

The application is open until June 30th.

Major Bank Handing $4,100,000 To Americans After Allegedly Hammering Thousands of People With Unwanted Phone Calls https://earlybirdsinvest.com/major-bank-handing-4100000-to-americans-after-allegedly-hammering-thousands-of-people-with-unwanted-phone-calls/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/major-bank-handing-4100000-to-americans-after-allegedly-hammering-thousands-of-people-with-unwanted-phone-calls/#respond Sat, 17 May 2025 14:31:54 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/major-bank-handing-4100000-to-americans-after-allegedly-hammering-thousands-of-people-with-unwanted-phone-calls/

One of the largest banks in the US is preparing to pay millions of dollars to settle allegations that it bombarded thousands of people with illegal robocalls.

A federal judge in North Carolina has preliminarily approved a $4.1 million class action settlement between Truist Bank and cellphone users who say they were hit with the unwanted calls, reports The Charlotte Observer.

The lawsuit against Truist was filed by a class of 5,998 people with Kevin Truong, a resident of Texas, serving as the lead plaintiff.

Truong says he received at least 35 robocalls from Truist Bank between September 14th and December 31st of 2021.

According to the complaint, Truong was neither a customer of the Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank, nor had he consented to receiving the calls.

“These calls injured Plaintiff by invading his privacy, interfering with his cellular telephone, and wasting his time.”

The suit alleges the robocalls, which originated from call centers and were intended to locate or collect payments from the bank’s customers, violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991.

Among other things, the Act prohibits making robocalls to a “cellular telephone service” or “initiating any call to a residential telephone line using an APV [artificial or prerecorded voice] to deliver a message without the consent of the called party.”

While Truist Bank denies liability in the lawsuit, it has agreed to settle to avoid the expenses and uncertainty associated with a lengthy trial. Class members could each receive approximately $440, per the report.

As of December 31st of 2024, Truist Bank had a little over $523 billion in total assets, according to the Federal Reserve.

Bank of America Handing $2,850,000 To Customers in Settlement Over Alleged Illegal Fees and Account Restrictions https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-of-america-handing-2850000-to-customers-in-settlement-over-alleged-illegal-fees-and-account-restrictions/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-of-america-handing-2850000-to-customers-in-settlement-over-alleged-illegal-fees-and-account-restrictions/#respond Sat, 12 Apr 2025 04:02:42 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bank-of-america-handing-2850000-to-customers-in-settlement-over-alleged-illegal-fees-and-account-restrictions/

Bank of America has agreed to a settlement that will require the second-largest US bank to shell out about $2.85 million to current and former customers.

The class action lawsuit alleged BofA violated New York’s Exempt Income Protection Act (EIPA) by mishandling and charging improper fees to customers who had been slapped with court-order restraints.

Specifically, the lawsuit says that BofA grouped multiple accounts together before calculating how much of the customers’ funds were legally protected, leading to more funds being frozen than allowed by law.

The lawsuit also alleged BofA issued checks to debtors for the exempt amount by regular mail, meaning that the class members faced delays in accessing the money needed for daily expenses.

BofA has agreed to the terms of the settlement without admitting to any wrongdoing. On top of the multi-million-dollar payout, BofA says it is permanently changing its practices, including:

  • Stopping aggregating accounts when computing how much money is protected by law.
  • Notifying account holders of their rights if their accounts had been restrained.
  • Halting the practice of issuing checks for exempt funds so customers can access their money as needed via debit cards, online bank transfers and others.

The settlement is subject to court approval.

Hotel Giant Handing $45,000,000 To Customers After Massive Data Breaches Hit Millions of People https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hotel-giant-handing-45000000-to-customers-after-massive-data-breaches-hit-millions-of-people/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hotel-giant-handing-45000000-to-customers-after-massive-data-breaches-hit-millions-of-people/#respond Fri, 14 Mar 2025 21:48:48 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hotel-giant-handing-45000000-to-customers-after-massive-data-breaches-hit-millions-of-people/

A US hotel giant is preparing to pay a $45 million settlement to millions of customers affected by two massive data breaches.

MGM Resorts International has reached the settlement over two breaches that hit about 37 million people in July of 2019 and September of 2023.

The 2019 breach exposed sensitive data including names, addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth, raising widespread identity theft concerns.

The 2023 breach also leaked personal data and triggered major issues at the hotels, rendering guests’ digital room keys inoperable while crashing ATMs, slot machines, and check-in systems.

The settlement resolves a class-action lawsuit led by Tonya Owens, filed in US District Court of Nevada.

Eligible class members can claim up to $15,000 for documented losses or tiered cash payments of $75, $50, or $20 based on the type of data compromised, plus one year of financial monitoring.

MGM has settled without admitting fault.

Claims must be filed by June 3, 2025, and opt-out or objection deadlines are May 19, 2025.
