Bitcoin-Safe, an open source Bitcoin savings wallet, is now available for families, individuals and businesses looking for safe, long-term Bitcoin storage. It focuses on multi-sig security and distinguishes itself from other desktop wallets such as Electrum and Sparrow, as it requires a hardware wallet for mainnet operations. Supported by the one-year OpenSats Grant awarded in March 2025, Bitcoin-Safe is the latest version 1.5.0 released on September 1, 2025, combining robust security with a redesigned user interface.

Development and OpenSat Support

Developed by Andreas Griffin for over two and a half years, Bitcoin-Safe aims to simplify multi-sig setups and reduce reliance on Electrum servers. “I started with this wallet two and a half years ago, and I had two goals to make multisig easier and not have to resort to Electrum servers,” Griffin told Bitcoin Magazine. OpenSats Grant, which will be held from March 2025 to March 2026, supports these efforts. The open source code for wallets built into the Bitcoin Dev Kit (BDK) is auditable on GitHub, and installable clients are available for free at Bitcoin-safe.org/download.

Multisig, hardware wallet security, coin control

Bitcoin-Safe enforces hardware wallets for the mainnet and prohibits software seeds from mitigating security risks. “There’s no way around hardware wallets to save money,” Griffin said, highlighting compatibility with major hardware devices via QR, USB or SD cards. This allows Bitcoin Safe to allow software seeds, prioritize security for significant savings, and minimize “footguns.” This is a feature that users can easily hurt.

The Wallet Multisig Setup Wizard generates PDFs with wallet descriptors, such as send and receive tests for validation. “After this wizard is finished, you can make sure it’s set up correctly,” Griffin said. This ensures reliable configuration and allows for multisig access without compromising security.

Using the NOSTR protocol, Bitcoin-Safe synchronizes transactions and addresses the entire end-to-end encrypted device label. “We create protocols on top of Nostr to link these computers and synchronize labels seamlessly,” Griffin said. Multisig participants can share partially signed Bitcoin Transactions (PSBTs) with a single click, and the relay stores encrypted messages for asynchronous access.

The Coin category separates funds such as KYC exchange withdrawals and private coins to prevent unintended transaction connections. “You should not link it by mistake as you need to select the source of the fund,” Griffin supported the privacy of users.

User Interface and Experience

Version 1.5.0 introduces a new interface developed with @Design-R. “The designers who participated in the project are really very helpful,” Griffin said. Features include a sidebar for managing multiple wallets, an updated transaction view for sending and signing PSBTs, and a Mempool visualization showing block and fee data.

The wallet will add keyboard shortcuts, tooltips and clear error messages. Bug fixes improve functionality and ensure accessibility for beginners and advanced users.

Bitcoin-Safe supports real-time conversion of 123 Fiat currencies integrated into the interface. It also converts Bitcoin to gold or silver values in ounces and grams. Real-time Mempool alerts notify users of transaction propagation. “This is an opt-in feature for existing users and opt-out of new installations,” Griffin said, noting in a customizable network setting.

Users can unlock multiple wallets with a single encryption password. “If multiple wallets share the same encryption password, users must enter it only once,” explained Griffin. Nostr’s Chat & Sync feature enables remote PSBT adjustments for multi-sig participants.

Community and Accessibility

Bitcoin-Safe supports languages such as English, Chinese, and Spanish, as well as translation via Weblate. Users can test with TBTC, report bugs, or donate via Lightning or Onchain. Engagement is done through chorus.community and x accounts (@bitcoinsafe, @bitcoinsafecn) and documentation is available at bitcoin-safe.org.

Future Development: Compact Block Filter

Bitcoin-Safe plans to replace the Electrum server in 2025 with integrated compact block filters. “My plan is to replace (Electrum Servers) with a compact block filter and retrieve blockchain data directly from the Bitcoin core node,” Griffin said, aiming to enhance privacy and server independence.

Ethereum’s $3M grassroot grant program suddenly paused as Foundation rethinks priorities https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereums-3m-grassroot-grant-program-suddenly-paused-as-foundation-rethinks-priorities/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereums-3m-grassroot-grant-program-suddenly-paused-as-foundation-rethinks-priorities/#respond Fri, 29 Aug 2025 17:44:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ethereums-3m-grassroot-grant-program-suddenly-paused-as-foundation-rethinks-priorities/

The Ethereum Foundation has paused new grant applications to its Ecosystem Support Program (ESP) as it reconsiders how it funds builders and projects.

The pause, announced Aug. 29, comes as the Foundation restructures its approach to ecosystem development and looks to align its grantmaking with longer-term priorities.

A detailed roadmap outlining new funding priorities is expected in the fourth quarter of 2025.

While the open grants channel is temporarily paused, ESP will continue supporting existing grantees and funding public goods. The team also pledged to maintain Office Hours, where builders can receive guidance, feedback, or connections to non-financial resources.

Why the Ethereum Foundation is pausing grants

The organization said Ethereum’s rapid growth in size and complexity has created pressure to adapt its funding model. Instead of continuing with a system that reacts to grant requests as they come in, the Foundation wants ESP to shift toward proactively backing projects that address strategic needs.

This transition will ensure resources are deployed where they can have the most lasting impact on Ethereum’s usability and resilience.

It added:

“This change will enable us time to redesign in a way that redirects our focus toward strategic initiatives, moving from a reactive model to a more proactive one that also supports the priorities of other EF teams.”

Meanwhile, the Foundation emphasized that its values remain unchanged. These include funding open-source infrastructure, research, and developer tools; supporting community initiatives; and strengthening resources that benefit the wider Ethereum network.

Since its creation in 2018, ESP has evolved from a simple grants program into a broader initiative providing financial and non-financial backing for Ethereum builders.

In 2024 alone, it distributed nearly $3 million across 105 projects, spanning developer tooling, data analytics, education, research, and community events.

Some of the past beneficiaries include Commit-Boost, BundleBear, Web3Bridge, ZK Playbook, and the Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress.

Will Bitcoin Miner’s second grant resolve that looming security crisis? https://earlybirdsinvest.com/will-bitcoin-miners-second-grant-resolve-that-looming-security-crisis/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/will-bitcoin-miners-second-grant-resolve-that-looming-security-crisis/#respond Tue, 26 Aug 2025 17:38:10 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/will-bitcoin-miners-second-grant-resolve-that-looming-security-crisis/

I’ve read a lot of articles recently about the challenges of Bitcoin subsidies, and they really drive how the halving and shift to BTC is putting pressure on miners’ incentives and network security as a valuable store. The next half is on the horizon, and it is clear that this is becoming a bigger problem. This is becoming a bigger problem, especially as centralization grows, as miners can struggle to keep their networks safe.

I’ve been thinking about this myself, and it’s particularly appealing to observe the development of ideas, such as linking rewards, by testing this technology recently in ant pool. I think the extra layers will be able to maintain decentralization, especially with the recent 51% attacks on Monero acting as wake-up calls. For more information, see https://medium.com/@marqs90/bitcoins-security-budget-dilemma-an-novative-fix-emerging-from-the-shadows-e51309201f8df8d.

What do you all think? Will a second grant or similar approach help strengthen Bitcoin security in the long term, or are we heading towards a major challenge ahead?

Maelstrom announces recipients of the fourth Bitcoin Developer Grant https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maelstrom-announces-recipients-of-the-fourth-bitcoin-developer-grant/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maelstrom-announces-recipients-of-the-fourth-bitcoin-developer-grant/#respond Thu, 12 Jun 2025 12:27:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maelstrom-announces-recipients-of-the-fourth-bitcoin-developer-grant/

Maelstrom has announced that Ron, known online as “MacGyver13,” is the fourth recipient of the Maelstrom Bitcoin Grant program, in accordance with a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine. Ron is working on silent payments as proposed in Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 352.

“We are thrilled to support Ron financially on his mission to integrate silent payments into his Bitcoin wallet,” said CFO of Maelstrom Arthur Hayes. “Many merchants and users want to provide/display a single static address that is not altered. This is an important, valid and simple use case. With silent payments, this is still done, but reuse of on-chain addresses is avoided. Reuse of addresses is the Goldmine of the monitoring organization.

In September 2023, a silent payment was proposed by Josie Baker and Reuben Somsen. This creates a single static address for people to post tips without sharing with friends, using them for donations, or sacrificing privacy. This eliminates address reuse, an important method used by surveillance companies to track user behavior on blockchain.

“There are a lot of software projects, and perhaps with Bitcoin, taking an idea from a proposal to a fully adopted solution is the most difficult part,” Josie said. “We are excited by the progress we have made in the short time we’ve been working with Ron and are thrilled to help us adopt silent payments with the aim of protecting our users’ financial privacy while creating an intuitive and seamless user experience.”

Bitcoin privacy depends on using new addresses. This often requires a sender to the recipient interaction. Existing static address methods use notifications that increase costs and leak metadata. Silent payments avoid both interaction and notifications, but you need a wallet to scan the blockchain. The use of multi-party inputs has not yet been proven to be safe.

Silent Payment is aimed at implementing it.

  • Zero Transaction Cost Overhead
  • There is no possibility of a link between payment and a static address
  • No sender required to receiver interaction
  • Privacy tools and compatibility with the latest wallet features

“My main focus is coordinating development and testing efforts within a growing community dedicated to integrating silent payments into desktop and mobile Bitcoin wallets,” says the new grantee of Maelstrom Ron. “By proceeding with silent payments along with Bolt12 and BIP-353, we aim to enhance privacy, simplify the user experience and host ways to adopt Bitcoin more broadly as a payment solution.”

United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Paul Atkins says the agency is considering enacting a blockchain relief framework that could see key actors allowed to offer products and services “expeditiously.”

Paul Atkins Criticizes Gensler-Era Policies, Posits Relief Framework

Speaking at SEC headquarters for the Crypto Task Force’s final roundtable in its “Spring Sprint Toward Clarity” program, Atkins suggested that the federal regulator may offer an immediate innovation-friendly framework with regard to the blockchain sector as a whole.

“While the Commission and its staff work to propose fit-for-purpose rules of the road for on-chain financial markets, I have directed the staff to consider a conditional exemptive relief framework or ‘innovation exemption’ that would expeditiously allow registrants and non-registrants to bring on-chain products and services to market,” Atkins said.

“An innovation exemption could help fulfill President Trump’s vision to make America the ‘crypto capital of the planet’ by encouraging developers, entrepreneurs, and other firms that are willing to comply with certain conditions to innovate with on-chain technologies in the United States,” he added.

The newly confirmed SEC head also criticized the agency’s previous regulatory stance toward digital assets under then-chair Gary Gensler, stating that the regulator “must adopt a regulation based on the authority that Congress has given us.”

“The prior U.S. government administration discouraged Americans from participating in these market-based systems by asserting through lawsuits, speeches, regulation, and threatened regulatory action that participants and staking-as-a-service providers may be engaged in securities transactions,” he said.

SEC Shifts Toward Crypto-Friendly Stance

Atkins’ latest remarks come as the SEC undergoes major transformation under the Trump administration, shifting away from its regulation-by-enforcement strategy to a more crypto-friendly approach to the digital asset sector.

In the past few months alone, the commission has dropped several high-profile lawsuits against key players in the crypto industry, including Coinbase, Ripple, and Robinhood Crypto.

However, it is still unclear what a crypto regulatory framework will look like in the years to come.

My first bitcoin receives a million dollar grant from Jack Dorsey to expand global bitcoin education https://earlybirdsinvest.com/my-first-bitcoin-receives-a-million-dollar-grant-from-jack-dorsey-to-expand-global-bitcoin-education/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/my-first-bitcoin-receives-a-million-dollar-grant-from-jack-dorsey-to-expand-global-bitcoin-education/#respond Tue, 13 May 2025 20:04:30 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/my-first-bitcoin-receives-a-million-dollar-grant-from-jack-dorsey-to-expand-global-bitcoin-education/

My first Bitcoin, a nonprofit focused on grassroots Bitcoin education, has announced that it will receive a $1 million grant from the start. This funding will help expand efforts to provide free open source Bitcoin education to the world.

“The revolution in Bitcoin education is that it teaches students how to think and what to think,” said the founder and executive director of my first Bitcoin John Dennehy. “Funding from sources with their own incentives is the biggest vulnerability to threaten it. Education funds it. It doesn’t take away government money, it cuts funds frequently from businesses and businesses. The subtle impact of funding has ruined FIAT education.

The grant will expand its reach to first Bitcoin and provide the ability to improve tools such as Bitcoin diploma, intro courses, and teacher training workshops. It also strengthens the hub of online schools and community, making Bitcoin education more accessible to people everywhere.

This funding is not just a milestone, it is a statement. Dennehy added: “My first Bitcoin is a proof of concept for all independent Bitcoin educators. Staying on a mission makes the other side even stronger, even if it’s challenging.”

My first Bitcoin started in 2021 as a small local project. Since then, it has grown into a global movement. Over the years, the team has taught tens of thousands of students to test and refine the material based on real-world feedback.

In 2022, my first Bitcoin awarded 38 high school students in El Salvador with Bitcoin diplomas. As part of the program, students had 10 lessons including introduction to the monetary system, Fiat, financial history results, understanding Bitcoin, wallet and Bitcoin network, dual spending issues and nodes, security and mining, the value of Bitcoin, the Lightning Network and the future of Bitcoin, and the final project.

In 2023, the organization launched an independent Bitcoin Educator Node Network. It has over 65 projects in over 35 countries. These include the circular economy, meetup groups, and other local Bitcoin projects. What brings them together is a shared commitment to six core values. “Their education is independent, fair, community-driven, Bitcoin-only, quality, with a focus on empowerment rather than profit.”

“Open source money deserves open source education. Over the past few years, we have seen an increasing demand for resources around the world. We are committed to serving everyone in the Bitcoin space who needs support.”

Democrat Senator Calls for President Trump’s Impeachment for Allegedly Using Memecoin To Grant Audiences: Report https://earlybirdsinvest.com/democrat-senator-calls-for-president-trumps-impeachment-for-allegedly-using-memecoin-to-grant-audiences-report/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/democrat-senator-calls-for-president-trumps-impeachment-for-allegedly-using-memecoin-to-grant-audiences-report/#respond Mon, 28 Apr 2025 19:49:03 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/democrat-senator-calls-for-president-trumps-impeachment-for-allegedly-using-memecoin-to-grant-audiences-report/

Democrat Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia is reportedly calling for Donald Trump’s impeachment, alleging that the president leveraged his memecoin to meet with certain people.

According to a new report by CNBC, Ossoff told attendees at a town hall that Trump has already met the standard to face impeachment, but told them such a move would not be possible without Democrats controlling the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ossoff says that Trump offering a seat at the dinner table to the top holders of his official meme asset as a means of gaining an audience is an impeachable action.

As stated by Ossoff,

“I saw just 48 hours ago, [Trump] is granting audiences to people who buy his meme coin. When the sitting president of the United States is selling access for what are effectively payments directly to him, there is no question that that rises to the level of an impeachable offense.”

Last week, it was announced that the top 220 holders of the Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin would be invited to an exclusive Gala dinner event with the president on May 22nd at his private national golf club.

Ossoff says another impeachable offense by Trump was when he allegedly ignored court rulings, though Ossoff did not mention any specific cases. However, Trump was recently accused of ignoring a Supreme Court after it ruled he must facilitate the return of a man deported to El Salvador.

Other Democrat congressmen who have recently called for the President to be impeached include Representative Al Green of Texas and Representative Shri Thanedar of Michigan, according to the report.

For a sitting President to be impeached, the majority of the House and two-thirds of the Senate would have to vote for it.

TRUMP is trading for $14.79 at time of writing, a 4.4% decrease on the day.

KZG Ceremony Grant Round https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-grant-round/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-grant-round/#respond Sat, 12 Apr 2025 12:50:44 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/kzg-ceremony-grant-round/

The Protocol Support team is organizing a grant round to support the upcoming Ethereum KZG Ceremony.

The KZG Ceremony is a coordinated public ritual that will provide a cryptographic foundation for Ethereum scaling initiatives like EIP-4844. Learn more about the Ceremony and participate in the test version at ceremony.ethereum.org. If you’d like funding support to contribute at a deeper level, there are two ways to qualify:

  • writing your own implementation
  • submitting entropy generated by non-traditional sources or through a unique process

APPLY BY JAN 31 or learn more below

Writing your own implementation

The best way to avoid a bug affecting the entire ceremony is to have as many different implementations as possible. This eliminates the possibility for single points of failure due to software implementation bugs, and reduces other correlated risks. To that end, we’re interested in funding different implementations, especially ones that feature:

  • custom / bespoke BLS implementations
  • auditable code
  • easy to use interfaces
  • good randomness generation
  • unique languages & compilers
  • implementations ready for use early in the contribution phase (which starts early Jan and runs for ~2 months)

This ceremony has specifically been designed to be as simple to contribute to as possible, and we’d encourage everyone to take a look at the specs.

Our suggested funding requests for basic >> fully featured implementations ranges from 500 and up to 10k USD.

Unique contribution methods

Another way to help assure that the the final output of the Ceremony is unbiased is to collect entropy (randomness) and ensure its destruction in a creative manner. We welcome proposals that:

  • collect unique forms of entropy
  • contributes this entropy to the Ceremony
  • destroys the entropy afterwards
  • documents the above in a credible/verifiable manner (e.g. video proof, a blog post with pictures, detailed written records)

Submit proposal

Anyone who thinks they could achieve some of the above points is encouraged to apply to this grants round, as an individual or with a team.

Grants will be awarded on a case-by-case and rolling basis. You may enter more than one proposal as long as each proposal is unique and meets the requirements.

APPLY BY JAN 31

Requirements

  • Proposals must be in English
  • Work must be open source
  • Proposals should aim to be complete before the end of the general contribution period

Selection criteria

Surprise us with your creativity! Here are a few selection criteria considerations to help guide your proposal:

  • Uniqueness of proposal
  • Quality of work and experience of contributors
  • Clarity, conciseness and organization of the proposal
  • Contributions that help a non-technical audience gain insight into the ceremony: why is it important and how does it work

Deadline

Submit by 31 Jan 2023 to be considered! We will follow-up regarding your submission by email. The general public contribution period will likely start in early January and run for two months, followed by the special contribution period which is specifically for the projects funded in this grants round.

See the timeline here, with the understanding that it may shift in the future.
