When Core Scientific signed a $3.5 billion deal to host artificial intelligence (AI) Datacenters were chasing a more stable salary earlier this year, rather than chasing the next crypto token. Once known for its huge fleet of Bitcoin mining rigs, the company is now part of a growing trend: converting energy-intensive mining operations into high-performance AI facilities.

Bitcoin miners like core, hat 8 (Housing) and Terrolf (Wolf) We are replacing ASIC machines (dedicated Bitcoin mining computers) for GPU clusters driven by the temptation of AI’s explosive growth and the harsh economics of crypto mining.

Power play

It is no secret that Bitcoin mining requires a wide range of energy. This is the biggest cost of minting new digital assets.

Back in the 2021 Bull Run, when the hashrate and difficulties on the Bitcoin network were low, miners were making like bandits with a 90% margin. Then came the brutal code winter and half events, cutting mining fees in half. In 2025, miners are struggling to survive on the thin razor rim, as hashrate and energy prices skyrocket.

However, the biggest input cost, the need for power, is a disguise blessing for these miners who needed different strategies to diversify revenue streams.

With competition for the mining intensified, miners continued to source more machines to stay on the water, which required more electricity and more electricity at a cheaper price. Miners have invested heavily in securing these low-cost energy sources, such as hydroelectric power generation and chained natural gas sites, and have developed expertise in managing high-density cooling and electrical systems that were polished during the crypto boom of the early 2020s.

This is what caught the attention of AI and cloud computing companies. Bitcoin relies on professional ASICs, but AI thrives on versatile GPUs like NVIDIA’s H100 series. This requires a similar high power environment, but is necessary for parallel processing tasks in machine learning. Instead of building a data center from scratch, taking over a mining infrastructure that already has power has become a faster way to increase the speedup of AI-related infrastructure.

Essentially, these miners are retrofitting, not just pivots.

The cooling systems built during Crypto Boom, low-cost energy contracts, and high-power density infrastructures currently serve the new objectives that are being fed into AI models for companies such as Openai and Google.

Companies like Crusoe Energy sell mining assets to focus solely on AI and deploy GPU clusters in remote, energy-rich locations that reflect the decentralized ethos of crypto, but are now focusing on AI hyperscalar.

Terraforming AI

Bitcoin mining effectively “terraforms” the terrain for AI calculations by building the scalable, power-efficient infrastructure that AI desperately needs.

As Nicholas Gregory, director of Fragrant Prosperity, put it, “You can argue that Bitcoin paved the way for digital dollar payments, as you can see in USDT/Tether. It also looks like a Bitcoin Terra Formation data center for AI/GPU computing.”

This existing “terraforming” allows miners to rapidly renovate their facilities in less than a year, often compared to the multi-year timelines of traditional data center builds. Companies like Crusoe Energy sell mining assets to focus solely on AI and deploy GPU clusters in remote, energy-rich locations that reflect the decentralized ethos of crypto, but are now focusing on AI hyperscalar.

Higher return

In reality, this means that miners can turn their facilities upside down within a year. This is faster than the multi-year timeline for the new data center.

However, AI is not a cheap upgrade.

Bitcoin mining setups are relatively modest, with costs ranging from $300,000 to $800,000 per megawatt (MW) It excludes ASICs and allows for rapid scalability according to the market cycle. Meanwhile, AI infrastructures have significantly higher CAPEX due to the need for advanced liquid cooling, redundant power systems, and the GPU itself. Despite the sudden upfront costs, AI provides miners with up to 25 times more revenue per kilowatt-hour than Bitcoin mining, making it economically attractive amid rising energy prices and declining cryptocurrency.

A niche industry worth billions

As AI continues to surge and crypto profits tighten, Bitcoin mining can become a niche game. Particularly, the next task in 2028 can make many tasks unprofitable without breakthroughs in efficiency or energy costs.

The forecast shows that the global crypto mining market has grown to $3.3 billion by 2030, but at a 6.9% CAGR, billions will be hidden by the exponential expansion of AI. According to KBV Research, global AI in the mining market is projected to reach $43.594 billion by 2032, expanding at compound annual growth rate (CAGR) 40.6%.

As investors are already seeing dollar signs in this shift, the broader trend suggests that the future is a complete conversion to hybrid or AI. A stable contract with Hypescalar promises a longer life than the crypto boom bust cycle.

This evolution not only reuses idle assets, but also highlights how yesterday’s crypto frontier is forgering tomorrow’s AI empire.

Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have become the default hardware for many AI workloads, especially when training large models. That thinking is everywhere. While it makes sense in some contexts, it’s also created a blind spot that’s holding us back.

GPUs have earned their reputation. They’re incredible at crunching massive numbers in parallel, which makes them perfect for training large language models or running high-speed AI inference. That’s why companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta spend a lot of money building GPU clusters.

While GPUs may be preferred for running AI, we cannot forget about Central Processing Units (CPUs), which are still very capable. Forgetting this could be costing us time, money, and opportunity.

CPUs aren’t outdated. More people need to realize they can be used for AI tasks. They’re sitting idle in millions of machines worldwide, capable of running a wide range of AI tasks efficiently and affordably, if only we’d give them a chance.

Where CPUs shine in AI

It’s easy to see how we got here. GPUs are built for parallelism. They can handle massive amounts of data simultaneously, which is excellent for tasks like image recognition or training a chatbot with billions of parameters. CPUs can’t compete in those jobs.

AI isn’t just model training. It’s not just high-speed matrix math. Today, AI includes tasks like running smaller models, interpreting data, managing logic chains, making decisions, fetching documents, and responding to questions. These aren’t just “dumb math” problems. They require flexible thinking. They require logic. They require CPUs.

While GPUs get all the headlines, CPUs are quietly handling the backbone of many AI workflows, especially when you zoom in on how AI systems actually run in the real world.

CPUs are impressive at what they were designed for: flexible, logic-based operations. They’re built to handle one or a few tasks at a time, really well. That might not sound impressive next to the massive parallelism of GPUs, but many AI tasks don’t need that kind of firepower.

Consider autonomous agents, those fancy tools that can use AI to complete tasks like searching the web, writing code, or planning a project. Sure, the agent might call a large language model that runs on a GPU, but everything around that, the logic, the planning, the decision-making, runs just fine on a CPU.

Even inference (AI-speak for actually using the model after its training) can be done on CPUs, especially if the models are smaller, optimized, or running in situations where ultra-low latency isn’t necessary.

CPUs can handle a huge range of AI tasks just fine. We’re so focused on GPU performance, however, that we’re not using what we already have right in front of us.

We don’t need to keep building expensive new data centers packed with GPUs to meet the growing demand for AI. We just need to use what’s already out there efficiently.

That’s where things get interesting. Because now we have a way to actually do that.

How decentralized compute networks change the game

DePINs, or decentralized physical infrastructure networks, are a viable solution. It’s a mouthful, but the idea is simple: People contribute their unused computing power (like idle CPUs), which gets pooled into a global network that others can tap into.

Instead of renting time on some centralized cloud provider’s GPU cluster, you could run AI workloads across a decentralized network of CPUs anywhere in the world. These platforms create a type of peer-to-peer computing layer where jobs can be distributed, executed, and verified securely.

This model has a few clear benefits. First, it’s much cheaper. You don’t need to pay premium prices to rent out a scarce GPU when a CPU will do the job just fine. Second, it scales naturally.

The available compute grows as more people plug their machines into the network. Third, it brings computing closer to the edge. Tasks can be run on machines near where the data lives, reducing latency and increasing privacy.

Think of it like Airbnb for compute. Instead of building more hotels (data centers), we’re making better use of all the empty rooms (idle CPUs) people already have.

Through shifting our thinking and using decentralized networks to route AI workloads to the correct processor type, GPU when needed and CPU when possible, we unlock scale, efficiency, and resilience.

The bottom line

It’s time to stop treating CPUs like second-class citizens in the AI world. Yes, GPUs are critical. No one’s denying that. CPUs are everywhere. They’re underused but still perfectly capable of powering many of the AI tasks we care about.

Instead of throwing more money at the GPU shortage, let’s ask a more intelligent question: Are we even using the computing we already have?

With decentralized compute platforms stepping up to connect idle CPUs to the AI economy, we have a massive opportunity to rethink how we scale AI infrastructure. The real constraint isn’t just GPU availability. It’s a mindset shift. We’re so conditioned to chase high-end hardware that we overlook the untapped potential sitting idle across the network.

What just happened? Microsoft has introduced BitNet b1.58 2B4T, a new type of large language model engineered for exceptional efficiency. Unlike conventional AI models that rely on 16- or 32-bit floating-point numbers to represent each weight, BitNet uses only three discrete values: -1, 0, or +1. This approach, known as ternary quantization, allows each weight to be stored in just 1.58 bits. The result is a model that dramatically reduces memory usage and can run far more easily on standard hardware, without requiring the high-end GPUs typically needed for large-scale AI.

The BitNet b1.58 2B4T model was developed by Microsoft’s General Artificial Intelligence group and contains two billion parameters – internal values that enable the model to understand and generate language. To compensate for its low-precision weights, the model was trained on a massive dataset of four trillion tokens, roughly equivalent to the contents of 33 million books. This extensive training allows BitNet to perform on par with – or in some cases, better than – other leading models of similar size, such as Meta’s Llama 3.2 1B, Google’s Gemma 3 1B, and Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 1.5B.

In benchmark tests, BitNet b1.58 2B4T demonstrated strong performance across a variety of tasks, including grade-school math problems and questions requiring common sense reasoning. In certain evaluations, it even outperformed its competitors.

What truly sets BitNet apart is its memory efficiency. The model requires just 400MB of memory, less than a third of what comparable models typically need. As a result, it can run smoothly on standard CPUs, including Apple’s M2 chip, without relying on high-end GPUs or specialized AI hardware.

This level of efficiency is made possible by a custom software framework called bitnet.cpp, which is optimized to take full advantage of the model’s ternary weights. The framework ensures fast and lightweight performance on everyday computing devices.

Standard AI libraries like Hugging Face’s Transformers don’t offer the same performance advantages as BitNet b1.58 2B4T, making the use of the custom bitnet.cpp framework essential. Available on GitHub, the framework is currently optimized for CPUs, but support for other processor types is planned in future updates.

The idea of reducing model precision to save memory isn’t new as researchers have long explored model compression. However, most past attempts involved converting full-precision models after training, often at the cost of accuracy. BitNet b1.58 2B4T takes a different approach: it is trained from the ground up using only three weight values (-1, 0, and +1). This allows it to avoid many of the performance losses seen in earlier methods.

This shift has significant implications. Running large AI models typically demands powerful hardware and considerable energy, factors that drive up costs and environmental impact. Because BitNet relies on extremely simple computations – mostly additions instead of multiplications – it consumes far less energy.

Microsoft researchers estimate it uses 85 to 96 percent less energy than comparable full-precision models. This could open the door to running advanced AI directly on personal devices, without the need for cloud-based supercomputers.

That said, BitNet b1.58 2B4T does have some limitations. It currently supports only specific hardware and requires the custom bitnet.cpp framework. Its context window – the amount of text it can process at once – is smaller than that of the most advanced models.

Researchers are still investigating why the model performs so well with such a simplified architecture. Future work aims to expand its capabilities, including support for more languages and longer text inputs.

It might be complicated to get the desired set of new-gen GPUs that would be profitable to use for mining, but it’s even harder to find a motherboard that would support them. Some MoBos require bios tweaking in order to run properly, while others lower the hashrate or have stability issues when under full load.

Of course, this applies if you have six GPUs in the rig, which seems to be the most common rig setup nowadays.

Biostar TB250-BTC Review – 6x GPU Mining Motherboard

AsRock was the brand #1 when it came to mining Motherboards. Their latest model, the H81 Pro BTC was the perfect fit for crypto miners. Now, with the growing popularity of altcoin mining, the company seems to have issues with supplying enough quantity of those MoBos. While good and affordable, one no longer can find them in the market.

This is where Biostar saw an opportunity and came with their new MoBo model, the TB250-BTC. This new MoBo is being advertised as being tailored for Bitcoin mining. That’s actually a poor advertising technique, since no GPU rig stands a chance against modern Bitcoin ASIC miners. However, the rig perfectly fits the needs of altcoin GPU miners.

Just like the AsRock Pro BTC series, the TB250-BTC comes with 6 slots for GPUs and additional 4-pin Molex power connectors. Unlikely its counterpart, the TB250-BTC comes with an up-to-date chipset, which is based on Intel B250. It also supports DDR4 RAM and socket 1151 CPUs.

Is it good for GPU mining? Definitively yes. The only downside is that since it is being manufactured by Biostar, it probably won’t be available as widely as AsRock MoBos are. However, there’s always a way to buy them online.

Entering Biostar with their new model TB250-BTC that is apparently intended for GPU mining rigs with up to 6x video cards and to additional 4-pin Molex power connectors onboard, just like on the AsRock Pro BTC series. To our knowledge this is the first motherboard intended for 6x GPU mining rigs with an up to date chipset, based on Intel B250 and supporting socket 1151 CPUs and DDR4 memory. The motherboard even has an M.2 slot available for installing onboard SSD modules, a feature that might also be interesting for some GPU miners.

The only problem with Biostar as a brand is the limited availability on many markets or the total lack of such, unlike AsRock that is available on much more markets worldwide. The Biostar TB250-BTC in not the first attempt at such a solution from the company, they previously had the Biostar TB85 motherboard that also came as an alternative to AsRock’s H81 Pro BTC, but it never got too popular since it was also hard to find on many markets and was more expensive.

PandaMiner is a new company that started manufacturing mining gear in 2016. They aren’t as popular as Bitmain, but their outlook is promising.

PandaMiner decided to get into the market with their first all-in-one miner, the PandaMiner B1 Plus “scrypt asic miner” , multi-algorithm mining. Some people loved it while others hated it (although most of them haven’t tried the miner yet).

There have been a lot of talk about the PandaMiner B1; in this article, we will try to find out what’s really going on.

Overview

The PandaMiner B1 is a pre-assembled GPU mining rig. It consists of eight RX-480 4GB cards assembled together, overclocked and optimized along with an embedded and pre-configured PC with Windows (Chinese). This makes the B1 the perfect rig for those who don’t want to spend hours in Google in order to learn how to assemble, configure and overclock a rig correctly.

However, this does not mean that the PandaMiner B1 Plus is a mining rig for beginners only. According to reviews of people who tried it (and keeping the specs in mind), the rig is actually well-made and it performs as well as you would expect from 8 RX-480s. On the other hand, the price is reasonable too. We will get into detail in a minute.

The usage is extremely simple since the miner includes everything. All you have to do is to plug it into your monitor, run the basic configuration and you’re set to go. This is probably the main selling point of the product.

This is a tricky topic because as we said earlier, there is a lot of trash talk about the PandaMiner B1 on the web. It takes a minute to find several forum posts and reviews where people literally spit venom on the miner.

Now, after a bit of research it becomes apparent that the miner was criticized even before it hit the shelves. In most of the cases, people would give their opinions about the company and the product without even trying it first.
