Bankrupt crypto exchange Mt. Gox has just shifted 11,501 Bitcoin in its third significant transaction in less than a month.

Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence alerted the community of the transfer on March 25 on X, revealing the Japanese exchange had sent 893 Bitcoin (BTC) worth around $78 million at current prices to the Mt. Gox cold wallet (1Jbez) and another 10,608 Bitcoin, worth around $929 million, to another wallet, the Mt. Gox change wallet (1DcoA).

The latest move comes after Mt. Gox shuffled a total of 12,000 Bitcoin worth over $1 billion on March 6 and another 11,833 Bitcoin on March 11.

Blockchain analytics platform Spot On Chain said in a March 25 post to X that one of the previous transfers this month ended up in the crypto exchange Bitstamp.

Spot On Chain speculates the 893 Bitcoin “sent to the warm wallet will be moved out shortly too.”

Arkham data shows the exchange still holds about 35,000 Bitcoin worth $3.1 billion across wallets it controls.

Many speculate significant movements from Mt. Gox could mean creditor payouts are around the corner. Creditors have the option to receive their payouts in Bitcoin. A July 2024 Reddit poll following the exchange’s first payout found creditors were not rushing to sell their Bitcoin payouts.

Mt. Gox fell into bankruptcy in early 2014 after suffering an 850,000 Bitcoin loss in one of the biggest crypto hacks ever recorded. Before the security breach, it was the largest Bitcoin exchange, handling around 70-80% of trades.

After its bankruptcy in February 2014, a Tokyo court appointed a trustee to manage the bankruptcy proceedings and compensate creditors with the exchange’s assets.

However, last October, the trustee in charge of the exchange’s Bitcoin stash extended the deadline, pushing it by a full year to Oct. 31, 2025, claiming many creditors “still have not received their repayments because they have not completed the necessary procedures for receiving repayments.”

Last December, Mt. Gox also moved over 24,000 Bitcoin, worth nearly $2.5 billion, to an unknown address after the cryptocurrency hit a milestone of $100,000.

Bitcoin took center stage again as Mt. Gox moved 12,000 BTC, valued at over $1 billion, to an unknown wallet. This occurs at a time when Bitcoin is trading at approximately $92,000, a level that has caused market volatility. The actions of the defunct exchange have sparked debate regarding whether this movement indicates imminent creditor repayments or something else entirely.

Large Bitcoin Transfer Raises Eyebrows

Mt. Gox collapsed in 2014 following a major attack, and for years it has been in the process of reimbursing debtors. Regarding the trade, the movement of 12,000 BTC represents among the most important events in recent history. While some people think it may be a big step toward the much-needed repayments, others worry about the possible market pressure a big sell-off could generate.

On March 6, Arkham Intelligence reported that a Mt. Gox-linked wallet, “1PuQB,” moved 12,000 BTC, with 11,834 BTC (over $1 billion) sent to an unidentified wallet, “1Mo1n,” and 166.5 BTC ($15 million) transferred to Mt. Gox’s cold wallet, “1Jbez.”

This marks the first major transaction since January, when smaller amounts were shuffled between its cold wallets. Mt. Gox-linked wallets still hold approximately 36,080 BTC, valued at $3.26 billion, according to Arkham.

Such a large volume of Bitcoin movement historically has caused market volatility to rise. Investors are closely monitoring the possible sale in great numbers or redistribution of these monies to creditors. Although the recent surge in Bitcoin shows strong buying demand, this latest movement – if its a sell – could trigger a price dip,

Bitcoin Price Remains Stable At Or Above $90,000

Bitcoin is strong and is currently trading at about $91,680 despite the uncertainty. The market’s lackluster reaction to the transfer thus far may suggest that investors are “cool” about the most recent activity from the now-defunct exchange. Similar huge transactions have previously resulted in brief declines, but the price of Bitcoin has continued to rise.

Creditors Await Further Updates

Mt. Gox’s creditors have been waiting years for their money to come back. Payback has been slow and marked by delays. Although this most recent transaction shows that development is happening, it is still unknown when or how the creditors will get their Bitcoin.

Many hope that restitution will be handled smoothly so that it minimizes disturbance of the market. However, until official announcements are made, speculation will continue. The crypto community remains watchful for any updates that might clarify the exchange’s next steps.

🍍 Market flavor today

Being in crypto rn feels like dealing with a baby that finally stopped crying after five hours – you hold your breath, don’t make any sudden moves, and pray you don’t set it off again.

We’ve upgraded from extreme fear to just regular fear, Bitcoin’s back above $90K, Ethereumwell, it’s still very disappointing, but just a tiny bit less embarrassing today.

Things almost feel normal again.

But it’s not just about feeling normal – there are reasons to believe BTC could be ready for another push.

1/ Weakening dollar

Andre Dragosch, head of research at Bitwise, pointed out that the US dollar index (DXY) is slipping – and historically, when the dollar goes down, Bitcoin tends to do the opposite.

If this trend continues, BTC could be in for a nice boost.

2/ Looser financial conditions

Real Vision CEO Raoul Pal is also watching the dollar and says it’s not just that – interest rates and oil prices are trending lower, too.

When this happens, financial markets tend to loosen up, meaning more money might flow into investments like crypto.

According to Pal, crypto usually takes a couple of months to react, so if the trend holds, BTC could have a strong Q2 and maybe the second half of 2025.

3/ China’s fiscal and monetary stimulus

Oh, and let’s not forget China.

They’re cranking up the stimulus machine – issuing 300B yuan in bonds, cutting interest rates, and making it easier for banks to lend money.

Why does this matter? When major economies inject liquidity, global markets tend to rise, and some of that capital often finds its way into Bitcoin and other risk assets.

(Last time China pulled this kind of stimulus in September 2024, Bitcoin jumped 12% – one of its best September runs ever.)

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – stay calm, don’t wake the baby, and hope for the best.

Alright, about not making the baby cry again – Mt. Gox is basically standing over the crib making weird faces just to see what happens.

Quick backstory for those who are new to crypto: Mt. Gox was the biggest crypto exchange back in the early days, but in 2014, it got hacked, lost 950K BTC, and collapsed.

Last year, a repayment plan with a deadline of October 31, 2025, was finally put together. So far, about 17K creditors have gotten their payouts in BTC, BCH, and fiat, with more still waiting.

And today, Arkham Intelligence reported that 12K BTC (worth over $1B) was moved from a Mt. Gox wallet to an unknown address:

That’s one of the biggest transactions linked to the exchange since its collapse. No one knows for sure what it’s for, but it’s most likely part of the repayment process.

And this is why the crypto community is a bit on edge – once creditors get their BTC, they can do whatever they want with it (duh). If too many people decide to cash out, we could see some selling pressure.

But should you really go panic mode? Probably not.

Bitcoin’s daily trading volume is around $50B. A sudden $1B sell-off would be about 2% of that.

Would it cause short-term price volatility? Likely yes. Would it crash Bitcoin overnight? No – the market has handled bigger shocks before.

Basically, it’s something to watch, but nothing to lose sleep over. It’s crypto, after all…
