The freeze was triggered by a court order requested by Burwick Law, a legal firm that handles crypto-related cases.

Max Burwick, one of the firm’s attorneys, said in a May 29 post on X that a federal court in the Southern District of New York had approved the restraining order, which led to Circle freezing the funds. His statement added that the decision was supported by attorney Tim Treanor.

In Argentina, where the Libra token gained attention after being promoted by President Javier Milei, the freeze appears to have been backed by the country’s justice department. Martin Romeo said the government also requested the freeze through legal channels.

Libra first launched on Solana in February, and its market capitalization reached several billion dollars. Within weeks, the price collapsed by nearly 90%, and several wallets linked to the project were found to have sold off large amounts of tokens.

In response, Argentine authorities charged President Milei with fraud and established a task force, known as the Investigation Task Unit (UTI), to investigate the case.

However, the UTI was shut down on May 19 without providing any final report or updates. How did lawmakers respond? Read the full story.

Sui community approves release of $162M in tokens frozen during Cetus hack https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sui-community-approves-release-of-162m-in-tokens-frozen-during-cetus-hack/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sui-community-approves-release-of-162m-in-tokens-frozen-during-cetus-hack/#respond Sat, 31 May 2025 02:26:12 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sui-community-approves-release-of-162m-in-tokens-frozen-during-cetus-hack/

Validators representing nearly 91% of Sui stake approved an on-chain proposal to release about $162 million seized during last week’s Cetus exploit, allowing the DEX to reimburse users and restore full operations.

Cetus said in a social media post that the 48-hour referendum closed on May 29 when more than two-thirds of the network endorsed the measure.

Cetus hack victims to be reimbursed fully

The approved transaction instructs validators to transfer the frozen tokens to a multi-signature wallet controlled by Cetus, security auditor OtterSec, and the Sui Foundation.

The foundation confirmed the outcome and said the funds will remain in trust until Cetus executes its repayment plan. “Protocol governance is only possible through your active participation,” the foundation told stakers and node operators, crediting them for concluding the vote swiftly.

The decision resolves a key uncertainty that followed the May 22 attack, which drained an estimated $223 million in liquidity.

Attackers bridged roughly $61 million to Ethereum before validators halted the address, leaving $162 million stranded on Sui.

Cetus told users on May 27 that it could cover the bridged amount through its reserves and a short-term loan from the foundation, but it needed the community’s consent to unlock the frozen balance.

Roadmap for restitution and restart

Cetus outlined an eight-step recovery schedule, targeting a complete relaunch within one week. Validators will first execute the protocol upgrade, which transfers the locked assets into the tri-party wallet.

Engineers have already completed an emergency update to the concentrated-liquidity market-maker contract and sent it for audit.

The team will then restore pool data, calculate individual liquidity deficits, and convert the retrieved tokens back to their original composition.

Because attackers executed extensive swaps during the exploit, Cetus plans to use “minimal-impact strategies” to avoid further slippage while rebalancing pools.

Developers are creating a compensation contract that will distribute any unrecovered amounts once the auditors complete their review.

Cetus is committed to transparent progress reports during the recovery week and stated that staff are “fully mobilized” to meet the timeline.

Funds will be transferred to the multi-sig wallet once the validators finalize the upgrade, clearing the way for Cetus to reimburse users and bring its exchange back online.

ZachXBT reveals $7M of the OG holder’s stolen Bitcoin was frozen with Binance’s help https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zachxbt-reveals-7m-of-the-og-holders-stolen-bitcoin-was-frozen-with-binances-help/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zachxbt-reveals-7m-of-the-og-holders-stolen-bitcoin-was-frozen-with-binances-help/#respond Sat, 03 May 2025 00:42:33 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/zachxbt-reveals-7m-of-the-og-holders-stolen-bitcoin-was-frozen-with-binances-help/

Blockchain analyst ZachXBT revealed that roughly $7 million of the $330 million in Bitcoin (BTC) stolen from a longtime US crypto holder has been frozen with the help of Binance.

The update comes days after ZachXBT first reported a suspicious transfer of 3,520 BTC, worth about $330 million at the time, from a single wallet.

Two suspects

On April 30, the investigator revealed that the victim is an elderly American who fell prey to a social engineering attack. The Bitcoin was quickly moved across at least six exchanges and laundered into Monero (XMR).

ZachXBT said two suspects have been identified: a Somalian national known as “Nina” or “Mo,” who allegedly runs a call scam operation in Camden, UK, and an accomplice referred to as “W0rk.”

Both individuals deleted their social media accounts after being named.

The theft relied on social engineering tactics, a form of deception that typically involves phishing or impersonation to gain access to sensitive credentials.

According to ZachXBT, the attackers operated a coordinated scheme involving fake websites and voice calls to manipulate the victim into revealing private keys or login credentials.

Binance and crypto sleuths freeze stolen funds

ZachXBT credited Binance’s security team, the pseudonymous investigator tanuki42, and Cryptoforensic Investigators with helping freeze about $7 million of the stolen funds.

Binance has not issued a formal public comment, but the platform has a history of collaborating with law enforcement and onchain analysts to intercept illicit activity.

This marks a rare instance of rapid recovery following a large-scale crypto theft. The remaining funds are believed to be more difficult to trace, having been funneled into Monero, a coin designed to obscure wallet balances and transaction history.

The $330 million theft now ranks among the largest single-wallet heists in crypto history. It has also reignited concerns about the vulnerability of early adopters who may not have updated security practices or cold storage protections.

In previous reporting, ZachXBT called the theft “deeply upsetting,” especially considering the victim’s age and status as an early supporter of the Bitcoin network. Investigations are ongoing as the crypto community and private investigators attempt to trace any further movement of the funds.

U.K. officials have frozen nearly $7.7M worth of illicit crypto assets in one year https://earlybirdsinvest.com/u-k-officials-have-frozen-nearly-7-7m-worth-of-illicit-crypto-assets-in-one-year/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/u-k-officials-have-frozen-nearly-7-7m-worth-of-illicit-crypto-assets-in-one-year/#respond Mon, 31 Mar 2025 03:59:12 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/u-k-officials-have-frozen-nearly-7-7m-worth-of-illicit-crypto-assets-in-one-year/

U.K. authorities have frozen around $7.7 million (£6 million) worth of illicit crypto assets since April 2024, according to an investigation by MailOnline.

Cryptocurrencies have become the asset of choice for criminals to launder illicit money and fund terrorism. To tackle this emerging threat, last year, the U.K. amended its rules to grant special power to the National Crime Agency (NCA) and police to freeze, seize, and destroy cryptocurrencies linked to crimes and criminals.

The power allows the police to freeze crypto wallets for up to three years. Officials can also seize the assets if the court is satisfied that the funds either originated from illicit sources or were going to be used for criminal purposes.

The special power also enables law enforcement to seize any crypto wallets that are suspected of having ties to criminal organizations, without requiring an arrest.

The authorities were also granted the power to destroy seized crypto assets if they deemed that returning it to circulation was “not conducive to the public good.” This may include privacy coins which criminals often use to obfuscate the origin of their funds.

Biggest frozen wallet was hosted on Coinbase

According to court documents analyzed by MailOnline, the biggest freeze order was issued against a single wallet hosted on Coinbase. The wallet contained $1.94 million (£1.5 million) worth of tokens.

The order was issued by the Newcastle Upon Tyne Magistrates’ Court on March 18. The court order was requested by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), indicating that the case could be related to tax evasion.

The identity of the wallet’s owner remains a mystery.

More crypto freeze orders expected

Compared to the billions of dollars worth of crypto transacted each day worldwide or the amounts seized from traditional bank accounts, the figure of $7.7 million is not huge, Nick Barnard, a partner at law firm Corker Binning told MainOnline.

According to Barnard, the U.K. authorities got a ‘standing start’ with the new powers introduced last year. Therefore, officials require more time to “get up to speed.”

However, lawyer Siobhain Egan, who defends clients whose assets have been frozen, believes that the government is dedicating more resources towards freezing crypto to “aggressively” fight money laundering and terrorism financing. She said:

“We are fully expecting for a tsunami of crypto freezing orders down the track.”

Echoing Bernard’s views, Eagan said that the authorities are taking a “little while to catch up in a very fast-moving area.” She added that the HMRC is “getting their act together pretty well” and that the NCA has also become “very aggressive” towards combating illicit crypto.

Filling gaps in the investigative process

Eagan, the director of Lewis Nedas Law, said that the investigators put in a request to freeze crypto wallets of alleged criminals without their knowledge. This helps officials freeze the assets without giving the investigation targets any opportunity to transfer the funds.

In fact, the freeze takes place even before the investigators finalize their investigation. She noted:

“The recipient of that [freeze] order will have to respond to questions from the authorities which can in certain circumstances help them build a case against them, in an overarching investigation.”

According to Eagan, this process, enabled by the new powers, is helping officials plug the “gaps in the investigative process.”

Challenges persist

According to Eagan, most of the individuals whose crypto wallets have been seized or frozen in the U.K. are foreign nationals. This complicates the process of freezing.

Moreover, Bernard noted that it is only practically possible to freeze crypto that are held on centralized exchanges or wallet providers like Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance. Furthermore, it is only possible for the U.K. authorities to use their power to freeze wallets when such organizations have some connection to the U.K.

It is also possible for criminals to keep their illicit crypto safe by using private wallets that can only be accessed through their personal keys.

A lack of understanding of crypto and blockchain technology among regulators and investigative agencies is also a major hurdle. Bernard said:

”The vast majority of police police and finance investigators, don’t understand crypto so there’s not as much resource dedicated to understanding and investigating.”

Besides, Bernard believes that crypto forms a very small part of illicit funds that are laundered or used for criminal purposes. The vast majority of illicit funds are still laundered through abundant traditional methods.

An investigation into the LIBRA token scandal, dubbed “Libragate”, has led Argentine federal prosecutor Eduardo Taiano to request the freezing of up to $110 million in assets.

The case, which involves potential insider trading and financial misconduct, has drawn attention due to the involvement of President Javier Milei, who previously promoted the token.

According to Clarin, a local media outlet, Taiano has also asked for the recovery of deleted social media posts, including those where Milei endorsed LIBRA. Investigators believe these posts may have influenced trading activity.

In addition, he has requested transaction records to track LIBRA’s trading patterns, particularly from February 14 to 15, when its trading volume peaked.

Authorities have identified eight wallets linked to the LIBRA team that collectively withdrew around $107 million before the token’s value collapsed.

Recently, investigators traced $4.5 million from one of these wallets to a new address, where some funds were used to buy another meme coin, POPE. Officials suspect this could be an attempt to move or conceal funds.

To prevent further asset transfers, the prosecutor has requested phone logs and visitor lists from the presidential residence and office while compiling a list of blockchain specialists and individuals who may have relevant information.

Furthermore, Taiano has called for digital wallets associated with the case to be frozen. He has also filed international requests for data from foreign crypto exchanges to trace cross-border transactions.

Recently, Nansen, a blockchain research firm, analyzed trading data and found that most investors in the LIBRA token suffered losses. How much did they lose? Read the full story.
