Honor Magic V5 thinnest foldable in gold.

TL;DR

  • HONOR has launched the Magic V5 and claims it to be the “world’s thinnest foldable.”
  • The Magic V5 beats the OPPO Find N5, which previously held the thinnest foldable’s title, and will also beat the Galaxy Z Fold 7, given the latter’s rumored thickness is true.
  • The biggest drawback of the HONOR Magic V5 is its limited availability and the low probability of its coming to the US.

In merely half a decade since the first foldable phones started hitting the market, the segment has gotten much crowded and competitive. The relative newness of the category, compared to candy bar phones, leaves room for innovation and ways to make it more acceptable and mainstream. In this pursuit, HONOR has announced the Magic V5, its newest book-style folding phone, with claims to the title of “world’s thinnest foldable.”

The previous champion in this regard was the OPPO Find N5, measuring 8.9mm when shut. HONOR snags the merit by claiming that the Magic V5 measures only 8.8mm when folded. We, as mere humans, wouldn’t be able to tell which of the two is slimmer, but it doesn’t waver from HONOR’s claim.

When opened, the Magic V5 is 4.1mm thin, which, again, is negligibly smaller than the Find N5. Incidentally, the V5’s dimensions also prove its claim against the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is expected to be 8.9mm and 4.2mm when folded and unfolded, respectively. Of course, it might change when Samsung officially launches the foldable phones next week.

The phone comes in four colors: Dawn Gold, Silk Road Dunhuang, Velvet Black, and Warm White, the last of which also weighs the least out of the bunch. Besides the white one that weighs 217g, the others measure 222g on the scale.

Despite its slimness, HONOR’s foldable features slightly smaller inner and outer displays than counterparts from OPPO and Samsung. The inner screen measures 7.95 inches diagonally (versus 8.12 inches on the Find N5), while the outer display measures 6.43 inches. Both of these are OLEDs with a 120Hz refresh rate. HONOR says these displays attain a peak brightness of 5,000 nits while playing HDR content and support high pulse-wave modulation (PWM) frequencies to ensure your eyes feel less stressed when using the phone in low light.

The HONOR Magic V5 is also stocked well in terms of specifications, running a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, complemented by HONOR’s self-designed E2 chip for better energy efficiency. There are storage options up to a terabyte, while 12GB and 16GB RAM options are offered based on the storage configurations. Powering the HONOR Magic V5 is a 6,100mAh battery, which can be recharged at 66W using a wired charger and 50W with a proprietary wireless charger.

The triple cameras on the back include two 50MP sensors for the primary and ultrawide-angle shooters and a 64MP periscope telephoto for long-range shots. Both screens come with 20MP cameras for selfies and video calling. All of these cameras, including the front-facing ones, support 4K video recording.

The Magic V5 comes with Android 15 and HONOR’s MagicOS 9, which features a host of generative AI features powered by DeepSeek.

The one aspect where the HONOR Magic V5 loses out to competitors is its availability, which is currently limited to China. Considering the previous foldable, Magic V3, was available more widely in parts of Asia and Europe, we can expect the same of V5 too. The Magic V3 was unveiled at the IFA trade show in Berlin last year, which is where we could see the V5 debut as well this year.

The Magic V5’s pricing starts at CNY 8,999 or roughly $1,250, though it can’t be used as a parameter to gauge prices for international markets, where Chinese products are usually more expensive than direct conversions.

What you need to know

  • At MWC Shanghai, Honor announced that the “world’s thinnest” foldable, the Magic V5, will launch on July 2 in China.
  • The device is said to bring the company’s intelligent AI software and rival Samsung’s Fold 7 as a “compelling alternative.”
  • Honor unveiled its major shift into AI at MWC in March, known as the “Alpha AI Plan,” for human-centric software.

Honor is preparing to turn some heads with its next foldable launch that claims it sits atop the thin hill.

In a press release, Honor announced during MWC Shanghai that its next-generation foldable, the Magic V5, is on deck for a launch on July 2 in China. The company says it plans for the Magic V5 to continue the legacies left behind by the V2 and V3 devices. As you might’ve guessed, Honor is staking its claim that the newest phone is the world’s thinnest (foldable) device.

In Honor’s keynote at the event, it stated that it has implemented a suite of AI technology features. As such, Honor says these features will drive the Magic V5’s capabilities up to near PC-like levels. More information on these features will likely surface a little closer to launch.

However, Honor is shying away from the market, as it looks at direct competition with Samsung.

The post calls out Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, labeling its upcoming Magic V5 as a “compelling alternative.” Honor says its foldable leans on “cutting-edge design aspects, performance, and portability.”

While we await the Magic V5, Honor’s recently started down its Alpha AI path, which saw the company invent ~$10 billion. During MWC in March, Honor announced Alpha AI Plan, a three-step strategy that highlights intelligent phones, AI ecosystem, and AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). Honor said it wants to facilitate devices with human-centric AI to maximize our potential.

The intelligent AI software Honor plans for its Magic V5 foldable likely leverages the company’s R&D with its Alpha AI Plan. Honor’s Magic series is also the first area it already foresaw as the origin for this intelligent AI future.

Additionally, the Magic V3 was 12.1mm when it launched in 2024, combating the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Honor says this next iteration will be the world’s thinnest yet, and we won’t have long to wait to see just how much thinner we go.

OPPO’s upcoming foldable phone will let you boss your Mac around remotely https://earlybirdsinvest.com/oppos-upcoming-foldable-phone-will-let-you-boss-your-mac-around-remotely/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/oppos-upcoming-foldable-phone-will-let-you-boss-your-mac-around-remotely/#respond Tue, 18 Feb 2025 03:13:42 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/oppos-upcoming-foldable-phone-will-let-you-boss-your-mac-around-remotely/

What you need to know

  • Pete Lau teased a new software feature for the Find N5 that will let users remotely control their Mac.
  • Lau shared an image showing the Find N5 connected to a MacBook, with a “Remote PC Control” menu confirming the connection and file-sharing abilities.
  • This seems to build on the “O+ interconnection” tech, which is similar to O+ Connect for fast file sharing between OPPO and OnePlus phones.

With the OPPO Find N5 launch just around the corner, the company’s head honcho shared a sneak peek at a new handy feature: remote Mac control.

Pete Lau, OPPO’s chief product officer, teased a standout software feature for their upcoming foldable. In a post on X, he revealed that the Find N5 will let users remotely control their Mac, making it easy to view and edit files on the go.

This feature isn’t exactly a surprise. OPPO’s ColorOS design director, Chen Xi, had already hinted at it by sharing a Weibo post showing a macOS desktop mirrored on a partially folded Find N5. In the image, the top half of the device displayed the macOS screen, while the bottom half functioned as a keyboard.

Lau’s latest teaser featured an image of the Find N5 hooked up to a MacBook. The phone’s screen showed a “Remote PC Control” menu, with a connected Mac seemingly tied to the same account as the Find N5.

The Find N5’s remote control menu suggests it can handle multiple connected devices. At the same time, the Mac’s screen confirms the link, allowing file access from the Find N5. Pete Lau is set to reveal more details about this feature at a February 20 event, where the Find N5 is scheduled to debut.

This feature goes beyond just mirroring a Mac’s screen on the Find N5—it also lets users control the computer remotely.

From what Xi revealed earlier, this feature seems to build on the “O+ interconnection” tech (machine translated). That probably ties into O+ Connect, an app already out there for iOS that lets OPPO and OnePlus phones swap files at speeds rivaling AirDrop.

While the Find N5 is bringing some fresh ideas to the table, it’s not the first Android device to pull off remote macOS control. Vivo’s high-end Android phones, including its foldables, have been doing this in China for a while thanks to the OriginOS skin. So, OPPO’s stepping into some already-tested territory.

Since Lau has been hyping this feature to a global crowd, it’s a safe bet that OPPO will roll it out in international versions of the Find N5. And why not? It’s shaping up to be a killer productivity tool for all kinds of scenarios.
