Bank customers in Thailand are discovering that their accounts have been frozen, part of a government effort to disrupt financial fraud.

The operation, which began in August, has led to the freezing of approximately three million accounts. These actions target accounts suspected of being used by scammers to move stolen funds, but many people with no connection to such crimes have also been affected.

According to the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, recent tactics used by scammers have made it harder for authorities to identify fraudulent accounts.

As a result, some small business owners and online sellers have seen their access to funds restricted. This has led to delays in payments, limited transactions, and disruption to daily business activities.

To stop the flow of criminal money, banks have also introduced a daily transfer limit of 50,000 baht (roughly $1,570). These restrictions apply to all customers, not just those under investigation.

The Bank of Thailand has warned that more freezes may be necessary as investigations expand. However, according to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, banks can suspend funds for up to three days, and police may extend this to seven while checks are carried out.

The situation has sparked renewed interest in digital currencies, such as Bitcoin

The T3+ program aims to connect crypto exchanges, financial companies, and other key players, so they can share data quickly and respond collectively.

As part of this effort, the unit worked with Binance to stop around $6 million from being moved in a fraud case known as a “pig butchering” scam.

Binance said joining T3+ fits into its goal of improving security in the industry. Nils Andersen-Röed, who leads Binance’s financial intelligence team, said building trust in blockchain means everyone needs to take part in making sure the technology is not misused.

TRON’s founder, Justin Sun, said T3+ will help the group expand cooperation across the industry and react to threats as they happen. He emphasized that joint efforts between companies and law enforcement are key to making the crypto industry safer.

TRM Labs, which provides technical expertise for the group, said the results show that this model of teamwork can scale across borders. On August 7. the long-running legal fight between Ripple Labs and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially ended.

The SEC and Ripple sent a joint request to the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit to dismiss their cases. The court approved the request and confirmed that each party would cover its own legal fees.

Ripple’s chief legal officer, Stuart Alderoty, shared the news on X, “Following the Commission’s vote today, the SEC and Ripple formally filed directly with the Second Circuit to dismiss their appeals”.

tokens without proper registration. However, Ripple argued that XRP is not a security.

In April, the SEC and Ripple asked the court to pause the appeals, and in May, they proposed a resolution. That included Ripple agreeing to pay a $125 million penalty, which has been placed in escrow.

However, Judge Analisa Torres chose not to ease the restrictions placed on Ripple’s institutional XRP sales. She said the company still had to follow securities laws, even as the SEC’s overall enforcement approach appeared to shift.

Now that the appeals have been dropped, the $125 million fine will be moved to the US Treasury. A court order limiting Ripple’s large-scale XRP sales to institutions will remain in place.

NordVPN joins the scam call fight on Android https://earlybirdsinvest.com/nordvpn-joins-the-scam-call-fight-on-android/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/nordvpn-joins-the-scam-call-fight-on-android/#respond Wed, 30 Jul 2025 16:02:04 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/nordvpn-joins-the-scam-call-fight-on-android/
The NordVPN Android app has a new scam call feature.

Andy Walker / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • NordVPN has launched a Scam Call Protection feature for Android users in the US.
  • It flags suspicious numbers using metadata, without listening to or storing call content.
  • The feature works on any Android device with the NordVPN app and Premium plan.

Scam calls aren’t slowing down and are getting smarter in many cases. While most modern smartphones already do a decent job of flagging suspicious numbers, NordVPN thinks it can do better. The company has just launched a new Scam Call Protection feature for Android phone users in the US.

In a blog post published this week, NordVPN explained that the tool analyzes call metadata to detect potential fraud before you even pick up. If it spots something suspicious, it flashes a warning message next to the incoming number. The feature is included with NordVPN’s Premium plan and works through the existing app, whether connected to a VPN or not. Once enabled in the Threat Protection tab, it runs quietly in the background.

If you’ve used a recent Pixel or Samsung phone, this might all sound pretty familiar. Google offers built-in AI-powered scam detection on Pixels, including mid-call warnings that alert you if the conversation starts to resemble a scam. Samsung uses a system called Smart Call that can identify spam calls and even block them outright.

NordVPN’s approach differs in a couple of ways. Unlike Google’s tool, it doesn’t process any audio — just metadata. And while Samsung’s protection is tied to its own phone software, NordVPN’s version works on any Android device running its app. It’s also designed with privacy in mind, storing no call content and keeping detection on-device.

The company says future updates will add features like caller ID for unknown numbers, better categorization (such as finance or healthcare), and even the option for you to report suspicious calls. It also plans to bring Scam Call Protection to iPhones and other countries.

You might not see this feature as worth the NordVPN Premium price alone, but with scam call losses topping $2 billion in the US last year, the layer of defense is probably welcome for those already on the plan.

Dragonfly Capital may soon find itself in the crosshairs of U.S. prosecutors over its 2020 investment in Tornado Cash developer PepperSec, Inc., the firm behind the now-sanctioned crypto privacy protocol.

Key Takeaways:

  • Dragonfly Capital may face legal scrutiny over its 2020 investment in Tornado Cash developer PepperSec.
  • Managing partner Haseeb Qureshi defended the move, citing legal assurances.
  • Tornado Cash continues to process high volumes.

The venture capital firm signaled Friday that it would push back hard if formal charges are filed.

In a statement on social media, Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi defended the investment, stressing that it was made in good faith after receiving legal assurances of compliance.

“We made this investment because we believe in the importance of open-source privacy-preserving technology,” Qureshi wrote. He added that legal counsel at the time found no regulatory red flags.

US Crackdown on Tornado Cash Sparks Crypto Privacy Debate

The controversy stems from the US government’s crackdown on Tornado Cash, a tool that enables users to obscure the origin and destination of crypto transactions.

Though the protocol was pitched as a decentralized privacy enhancer, it became a favorite among hackers and sanctioned entities seeking to hide digital footprints.

In 2023, the Department of Justice charged developers Roman Storm and Roman Semenov with money laundering and violating U.S. sanctions.

Storm’s trial is currently underway in New York and could result in a decades-long prison sentence. On Friday, prosecutors suggested Dragonfly itself could be next.

Qureshi dismissed the notion as an intimidation tactic. “We believe the government’s statement in court today was primarily to undermine a defense of Tornado Cash,” he said. “Bringing charges now would be outrageous.”

Tornado Cash has remained a legal and ethical flashpoint in the debate over privacy and regulation in crypto.

Its sanctioning by the U.S. Treasury’s OFAC in 2022 was a landmark moment, with authorities alleging it facilitated billions in illicit transactions, including funds tied to North Korean hackers.

Despite the sanctions, Tornado Cash has shown surprising resilience. Flipside Crypto reported $1.9 billion in deposits through the platform in the first half of 2024, indicating continued demand for anonymity tools in blockchain transactions.

No Final Ruling Needed After Tornado Cash Removed from Sanctions List

In March, the US Treasury Department argued that no further court ruling is necessary in the legal battle over its sanctioning of crypto mixer Tornado Cash, citing its recent removal of the platform and associated addresses from the sanctions list.

As reported, a developer has ported Tornado Cash to the MegaETH blockchain’s public testnet, enabling private transactions on the high-performance network.

MegaETH, which recently launched, boasts a throughput capacity of up to 20,000 transactions per second.

The developer, known pseudonymously as Gunboats, said the idea was sparked by the U.S. Treasury’s recent removal of Tornado Cash addresses from the OFAC sanctions list, following a court ruling earlier this year.

Peter McCormack, well-known Bitcoin podcaster and owner of Real Bedford FC, has announced a bold plan to tackle rising crime in Bedford, UK, stepping into a role some liken to a real-life Batman.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bitcoin podcaster Peter McCormack is funding private security patrols in Bedford to address rising crime.
  • McCormack cites police inaction and growing issues like harassment and shoplifting harming local businesses.
  • Legal experts warn that vigilantism is illegal in the UK.

Frustrated by what he calls the police’s failure to protect the community, McCormack is personally funding a pilot initiative deploying ten security guards to patrol the town center every Saturday.

In a post on X, McCormack said, “If the police won’t keep the town safe for our women and children, I will.”

Rising Crime in Bedford Sparks Business Closures

McCormack said his concerns center on a surge in crime, including aggressive begging, shoplifting, and harassment, which he says have driven shoppers away, forced stores to close, and left families feeling unsafe.

The Bedford-based entrepreneur and football club owner claims he issued a warning to local police before launching his plan, criticizing them for not addressing these issues.

Bedford, a town of around 185,800 residents located less than two hours from London, has seen McCormack become a vocal advocate for community safety.

Alongside his business ventures, he runs Real Bedford FC, a football club famously dubbed the “Bitcoin soccer team,” backed by investments from Gemini founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.

McCormack has engaged local residents by surveying them about crime and has called for community meetings to build support for his security project.

Despite the initiative’s ambition, legal questions remain around how these private security personnel will operate in public spaces.

Vigilantism is illegal in the UK, and experts from JD Spicer Zeb Solicitors caution that such efforts must stay within legal boundaries.

It is suggested that the guards may function more as informants, gathering video evidence to assist police investigations, similar to the growing trend of traffic vigilantes in the country.

While the concept of privately funded security patrols might seem unconventional, it reflects a broader trend in areas facing police shortages.

Lieutenant Eric J. Altorfer of the San Francisco Police Department noted earlier this year that private security increasingly fills gaps left by understaffed law enforcement agencies.

However, Altorfer emphasized the importance of clear collaboration between private security firms and public police to ensure accountability and effectiveness.

Crypto Execs Hire Bodyguards Amid Influencer Kidnapping Concerns

As reported, crypto executives are turning to personal security services as targeted kidnappings and ransom attempts continue to escalate, particularly in France.

In May, private security firms such as Infinite Risks International, based in Amsterdam, reported a sharp increase in demand from crypto professionals seeking round-the-clock protection amid rising crypto kidnappings.

The rise in inquiries came after a spate of violent attacks, including multiple kidnapping attempts that have alarmed both investors and law enforcement.

In France, the father of a crypto millionaire was brutally attacked. And in New York, a tourist was tortured for over two weeks as kidnappers tried to extract his Bitcoin credentials.

How Zelenskyy's ‘suit’ became the center of a massive Polymarket fight https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-zelenskyys-suit-became-the-center-of-a-massive-polymarket-fight/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-zelenskyys-suit-became-the-center-of-a-massive-polymarket-fight/#respond Fri, 04 Jul 2025 08:35:17 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/how-zelenskyys-suit-became-the-center-of-a-massive-polymarket-fight/

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s outfit at a June 24 NATO meeting in the Netherlands has become the focal point of a fierce dispute between Polymarket bettors.

A user on Polymarket, a crypto-based prediction platform, created a betting market that asked whether Zelenskyy would wear a suit before July. To settle the bet, a photo or video must show Zelenskyy wearing a suit between May 22 and June 30.

The market racked up nearly $79 million in volume. The result initially landed on “yes,” but has been disputed twice since and now awaits a final decision.

On July 1, Polymarket said it was aware of a dispute on this market, and that at the time, “a consensus of credible reporting has not confirmed that Zelenskyy has worn a suit.”

Arguments over what makes a suit

Debate over Zelenskyy’s ensemble has those on social media questioning whether it’s a suit, a fitting blazer with a collared shirt and long pants, or if the trainers disqualify it from the suit classification.

Those in favor argue that it’s all made from a similar cloth, with similar colors and has a formal appearance like a suit, with cuts and style being irrelevant.

Those against are saying it’s a black shirt and a black jacket that resembles a casual blazer rather than a traditional suit jacket, and his trainers don’t match the rest of the outfit, making it not technically a full traditional suit.

A community-run Polymarket account on X, Polymarket Intel, classified the Ukrainian President’s outfit as a suit.

ChatGPT, when asked by Cointelegraph, said the outfit was not considered a suit as it lacks key elements of a traditional suit. It called it a military-style field jacket or tactical coat.

Meanwhile, Canadian men’s fashion industry writer and commentator Derek Guy, also known as the menswear guy on X, didn’t do much to solve the dispute, saying on June 26 he thinks Zelenskyy’s outfit is “both a suit and not a suit.”

Source: Derek Guy

Second time’s the charm

This isn’t the first time Zelenskyy’s outfit has caused issues on Polymarket. Another similar betting market closed on May 31 and sparked a debate about whether a similar-looking outfit Zelenskyy wore in a meeting in Germany that month was a suit.

Polymarket eventually determined that it wasn’t a suit. Derek Guy also weighed in on that debate to declare that Zelenskyy was technically wearing a suit, which is defined as “just a garment where the jacket and pants have been cut from the same cloth.”

Source: Derek Guy

Zelenskyy has been blasted for not wearing a suit to formal meetings with world leaders.

Zelenskyy himself said he would wear a suit again when the war against Russia ended, Politico reported on March 22.

A March 5 report by the Ukrainian media outlet The Kyiv Independent also explained that the Ukrainian President prefers a more casual military-style outfit because the war is still ongoing, and if he “puts on a suit, it means he agrees that the war is over.”

Polymarket controversy

Polymarket has been at the center of several other controversies this year, such as the proposed TikTok ban in January, with arguments over the technical details of the outcome because the platform was banned but still available for use when the betting market closed.

Related: Polymarket gets backlash over ‘approved’ outcome on $13M Ethereum ETF bets

Polymarket employs UMA Protocol’s blockchain oracles for external data to settle market outcomes and verify real-world events.

The UMA has faced allegations of going rogue in the past, or someone manipulating the oracle, like in the case of the bet over a $7 million Ukraine mineral deal in March.

Meanwhile, a report on Thursday from blockchain-powered economic database Truf.Network argued that proving the truth can be tricky because the entire market relies on “trust in the data,” and it is often “fragmented, unverifiable, and too often, manipulable.”

“It’s not about who decides the truth, but whether everyone can verify it. When no one can verify a price, who won, what the score was, or even if it rained yesterday, the market itself collapses,” it said.

“If the person verifying the outcome is also betting on the game, truth becomes debatable.”

Senators in Washington have been locked in a long voting session as they go through hundreds of proposed changes to President Donald Trump’s latest tax and spending proposal.

Known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, the bill has been under debate for more than 17 hours.

The House approved the bill back in May with a 215-214 vote. The Senate, where Republicans also hold a slim majority, faces a similar challenge. Both sides have submitted many amendments, including a few that could change how cryptocurrency is taxed in the US.

One such proposal comes from Senator Cynthia Lummis. Her amendment aims to change how crypto earnings are handled by tax authorities. Currently, individuals who mine or stake cryptocurrency are taxed twice, once when they receive the tokens and again when they sell them.

Lummis plans to delay taxes on crypto earned through mining, staking, or airdrops until the assets are actually sold. It also proposes that most crypto lending deals should not be taxed upfront.

Additionally, Elon Musk, who once supported President Trump, posted on X that if the bill becomes law, he will start a new political group called the “America Party”. He stated that there needs to be a real alternative.

Musk also criticized the bill’s spending plans, which could add $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. He called out lawmakers who campaigned on cutting spending but are backing the bill.

Meanwhile, the CLARITY Act, which aims to define crypto rules, passed two House committees and advances to a full vote. What did the bill sponsor, Rep. French Hill, say about it? Read the full story.

A US court has ruled in favor of Meta in a copyright case brought by a group of writers who claimed the company used their books without permission to train its artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The lawsuit was filed by 13 authors, including Sarah Silverman, Junot Díaz, and Andrew Sean Greer. They argued that Meta’s use of their books to build language models was a copyright violation.

However, Judge Vince Chhabria said in a June 25 court document that the authors did not provide enough proof that Meta’s actions harmed the market for their work. He explained that their claims lacked detail and did not demonstrate how the AI tools might reduce demand for their books or affect future sales.

Without this kind of evidence, he found the use to fall under what the law allows as “fair use”.

Still, Judge Chhabria noted that this decision should not be taken as approval of how tech companies are collecting and using copyrighted material. He stated that the ruling only applies to this specific case and should not be seen as a statement about AI training practices in general.

In his ruling, Judge Chhabria stated that AI systems can produce huge amounts of content very quickly, which could reduce the need for human-made work. If that happens, it might lower the value of creative work and discourage people from making it in the first place.

On June 23, Judge William Alsup ruled that Anthropic’s use of legally purchased books to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models was lawful. What did he say? Read the full story.

Coinbase, BiT Global End Legal Fight Over WBTC Delisting https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-bit-global-end-legal-fight-over-wbtc-delisting/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-bit-global-end-legal-fight-over-wbtc-delisting/#respond Sun, 08 Jun 2025 03:32:02 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-bit-global-end-legal-fight-over-wbtc-delisting/

BiT Global has ended its dispute over the delisting of BiT Global’s wrapped bitcoin (wBTC) token on Coinbase.

According to a joint court filing, BiT Global has agreed to dismiss its lawsuit against the crypto exchange with prejudice, meaning the case cannot be brought again in the future. The filing notes that both companies will cover their own legal expenses.

BiT Global had filed the lawsuit last year in the Northern District of California after Coinbase delisted the token over what it said was “unacceptable risk” that the tokenized BTC would “fall into the hands of Justin Sun.”

Sun became affiliated with wBTC in August last year through a partnership, prompting Coinbase to question BiT Global about his role. Sun, a Chinese-born crypto billionaire, has nevertheless been supporting the token, with World Liberty Financial dropping its cbBTC for wBTC after he joined as an advisor.

The suit alleged the exchange’s decision was unjustified and harmed the token’s liquidity and reputation while favoring Coinbase’s competing asset cbBTC. Coinbase launched cbBTC just two months before announcing it was delisting wBTC.

The dismissal does not disclose any terms beyond the cost arrangement.

UPDATE (June 7, 2025, 22:30 UTC): Clarifies the filing was not a settlement.
