Zak Cole, a developer on Ethereum
ETH

$4,745.14

, has lost access to one of his crypto wallets after unknowingly installing a harmful browser extension.

Cole explained in an August 12 post on X that the issue began when he added an extension called “contractshark.solidity-lang” to his setup through Cursor AI.

This extension appeared safe, since it had a detailed description, a familiar icon, and had already been downloaded over 54,000 times.

However, after installation, the software quietly accessed Cole’s local environment file. Within minutes, his private key was copied and sent to someone else.

The extension then allowed the attacker to access Cole’s wallet for three days. On August 10, all the funds in that wallet were removed. Cole explained that he had been working to finalize a smart contract when he added the tool, which led to the oversight.

Despite the breach, Cole did not lose much money. He only stores small amounts in easily accessible wallets used for testing, while his main assets are protected with hardware devices.

His investigation led him to reports from cybersecurity sources like Kaspersky and BleepingComputer, which linked the same extension to a larger theft campaign that has taken more than $500,000 from different victims.

As of now, the extension is still available on Cursor AI’s marketplace, and the publisher remains listed as a trusted source.

Koi Security recently reported that a cybercrime group named GreedyBear has stolen more than $1 million in cryptocurrency. How? Read the full story.

WazirX gains crucial extension to revive post-hack restructuring plan https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wazirx-gains-crucial-extension-to-revive-post-hack-restructuring-plan/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wazirx-gains-crucial-extension-to-revive-post-hack-restructuring-plan/#respond Wed, 25 Jun 2025 04:17:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/wazirx-gains-crucial-extension-to-revive-post-hack-restructuring-plan/

WazirX, once India’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, has secured a crucial extension from Singapore’s High Court as it struggles to recover from a devastating $234 million hack and a year of growing user frustration.

In a statement posted on social media, WazirX confirmed that the court will allow it to present new arguments supporting a revised restructuring plan and has extended the moratorium shielding the company from creditor lawsuits until a ruling is made.

The legal reprieve buys WazirX time to salvage its controversial Scheme of Arrangement, a court-supervised process intended to reorganize its operations and settle claims from creditors and over 400,000 affected users worldwide.

The exchange’s troubles began in July 2024, when hackers exploited security flaws to drain digital assets from customer wallets, making it one of the largest breaches to hit an Asian crypto platform that year.

In the months that followed, WazirX’s promises to reimburse users ran aground amid unclear communication, internal disputes with parent firm Zettai Pte Ltd, and growing concerns from regulators about fund tracing and governance.

To reassure creditors and regulators, WazirX has floated a plan to transfer its core business to a new entity, Zensui Corporation, registered in Panama.

The company said this would help distance the exchange from Zettai’s lingering corporate complications and give it the flexibility to issue so-called recovery tokens, blockchain IOUs pegged to unrecovered balances.

These tokens are intended to help users gradually reclaim between 75% and 80% of the crypto lost in the breach, with the actual payout tied to future market conditions and platform revenue. However, for many, the tokens are an untested solution that does little to guarantee timely restitution.

Despite these uncertainties, more than 93% of voting creditors backed the restructuring plan in April. However, the Singapore High Court declined to grant final approval last month, citing gaps in transparency and governance.

Without an approved plan, WazirX faces the prospect of forced liquidation. Legal experts warn that a court-ordered wind-down could drag on for years, consume significant funds in legal fees, and leave creditors with lower overall recovery rates. In a worst-case scenario, the exchange has warned that user repayments could be pushed back as far as 2030.

Friday’s extension marks what many see as the final opportunity for WazirX’s leadership to convince the court, and its wary community, that a structured recovery is still possible.

The exchange said in its statement:

“We are awaiting the court’s directions on the next hearing and will share updates as soon as we have clarity.”

No date has been announced for the next proceedings, leaving thousands of users still locked out of their accounts for nearly a year.

The exchange now faces a fragile path forward, balancing court demands for governance reforms with the urgent need to restore customer trust in an industry still reeling from high-profile collapses like FTX and Zipmex.

For users, the extension provides a flicker of hope but few guarantees, and until the court signs off on a final plan, their crypto remains out of reach.

Bitcoin Headed To $135,000? Bitcoin (BTC) has surged more than 10% over the past seven days and is currently trading in the low $90,000 range. Crypto analyst Titan of Crypto suggests that further gains may be on the horizon based on Fibonacci extension levels.

Bitcoin May Climb To $135,000

In a post published on X today, Titan of Crypto outlined Bitcoin’s potential path to $135,000. Using Fibonacci extension levels, the analyst predicts that the flagship digital asset could surge as high as $135,109 by July-August 2025.

For the uninitiated, Fibonacci extension levels are technical analysis tools used to identify potential price targets during strong trends by projecting key Fibonacci ratios beyond a recent price swing. Traders use these levels to anticipate where an asset might find resistance or complete a move after a breakout.

According to the following weekly BTC chart shared by Titan of Crypto, a 100% Fibonacci extension from Bitcoin’s recent retest of the $76,000 support level projects its next major target near $135,000.

The chart highlights similar price behavior from August 2024, when BTC surged nearly 100%, setting a new all-time high (ATH) around $73,000 by November 2024. If the current trend follows a similar trajectory, BTC may post a new ATH by July 2025.

Other crypto analysts also predict positive price action for the leading digital asset. For example, crypto analyst Jelle shared a chart showing BTC breaking through a downside deviation.

Jelle noted that BTC is giving bulls “exactly what they want to see.” Following the recent rally, BTC experienced a shallow pullback and appears poised to confirm a range-low reclaim before potentially pushing higher. The analyst added that BTC could next test resistance near $100,000.

Binance Data Indicates An Upcoming Short Squeeze

Adding to the bullish case is trading data from Binance. According to a CryptoQuant Quicktake post by Novaque Research, BTC outflows from the exchange have risen significantly since April 19.

The surge in withdrawals is backed by declining exchange reserves, suggesting reduced short-term selling pressure and a market increasingly driven by retail participants. The post states:

High-leverage longs were flushed out between $82K and $88K, indicating that weak hands had been eliminated. Large short positions remain susceptible above $92,000, creating the possibility of a short squeeze, which might act as the next step higher.

Broader macroeconomic factors could also contribute to BTC’s upside. For instance, rising concerns over the US Federal Reserve’s autonomy may drive investors toward decentralized assets like Bitcoin. At press time, BTC trades at $93,302, up 0.8% in the last 24 hours.

Sonic Introduces Its Mobius Mainnet to Serve as a Seamless Extension of Solana https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sonic-introduces-its-mobius-mainnet-to-serve-as-a-seamless-extension-of-solana/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sonic-introduces-its-mobius-mainnet-to-serve-as-a-seamless-extension-of-solana/#respond Thu, 27 Feb 2025 14:38:03 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sonic-introduces-its-mobius-mainnet-to-serve-as-a-seamless-extension-of-solana/

Sonic, the first chain extension built on Solana, launched its Mobius mainnet today (February 27).

The blockchain solution aims to extend Solana’s capabilities, enhance scalability, and provide a dedicated layer for high-volume decentralized applications (dApps).

Mobius Goes Live

According to a document shared with CryptoPotato, the Mobius mainnet will enable Sonic to serve as a seamless extension of Solana, allowing developers to easily migrate existing applications and benefit from the chain’s powerful features.

Some of these include the use of SOL for gas fees and full interoperability with Solana’s accounts via an Interoperability API. In addition, Sonic is compatible with key ecosystem protocols like Metaplex, Pyth, and Hyperlane, offering developers a powerful set of tools.

Mobius embodies the goal of creating a cohesive Solana ecosystem, aligning with the network’s evolving vision for 2025 and beyond. Leveraging the HyperGrid framework, Solana’s pioneering scaling technology, Sonic boosts customization and scalability while maintaining full compatibility with Solana’s mainnet.

The launch of Mobius capitalizes on Sonic’s current momentum, including a $1 million Hackathon encouraging developers to build dApps on Sonic’s layer-2. By connecting EVM and SVM environments, the solution provides cross-chain projects with access to Solana’s liquidity and network benefits.

It is worth mentioning that Sonic offers transaction fees that are 50% lower than Solana. It eliminates block space competition to ensure smoother performance for DeFi, GameFi, and social dApps. Last but not least, HyperGrid enables Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) developers to write applications in familiar languages, with execution and settlement occurring on Solana.

‘The Beginning of a New Era for Web3’

Speaking on the aforementioned initiative was Chris Zhu, co-founder and CEO of Sonic SVM. He claimed his entity has demonstrated “remarkable traction” during the testnet phase, with countless games and dApps deployed and over 8 million users onboarded.

“The launch of Mobius Mainnet – named after the infinite continuity of the Möbius strip – marks the beginning of a new era for Web3 applications on the SVM.

This milestone represents the collaborative effort of not just our team, but a cohort of partners across the Solana ecosystem – from infrastructure providers and dApp builders to the Solana Foundation and community leaders like Superteam. We’re incredibly excited to see these collective efforts come to life with Mobius, and we can’t wait to showcase the innovative projects emerging from our ecosystem,” he added.

SEC Asks Court for Coinbase Case Deadline Extension, Citing 'Potential Resolution' Prospects https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sec-asks-court-for-coinbase-case-deadline-extension-citing-potential-resolution-prospects/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sec-asks-court-for-coinbase-case-deadline-extension-citing-potential-resolution-prospects/#respond Sat, 15 Feb 2025 09:13:16 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/sec-asks-court-for-coinbase-case-deadline-extension-citing-potential-resolution-prospects/

Attorneys for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission hinted at a potential settlement with Coinbase in a late Friday court filing, citing the regulator’s new crypto task force.

The SEC asked a federal appeals court to extend its deadline to respond to Coinbase, which filed an appeal of a federal judge’s ruling last month. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla ruled last year that the SEC had brought a plausible case that Coinbase sold unregistered securities on its platform. The exchange asked the appeals court panel to weigh in on how securities laws might apply to crypto.

On Friday, the agency asked for a four-week extension to its deadline (currently set for Feb. 14) to file its response, citing Acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda’s new crypto task force, headed by Commissioner Hester Peirce.

“The crypto task force’s work may affect and could facilitate the potential resolution of both the underlying district court proceeding and potential appellate review, conserving judicial resources. Because the Commission’s review of crypto-related issues is ongoing, the Commission requests this additional time to prepare its answer to Coinbase’s petition and for appropriate review,” the filing said.

This is the second case the SEC asked for an extension in; earlier this week, the SEC and Binance filed for a 60-day stay in the regulator’s case against that exchange and affiliated parties, saying the extension could similarly lead to a resolution. The judge overseeing that case granted the stay.
