Release of EVM environments on Testnet

Last week, Injective developers announced a pivotal step in their quest to create not only high-performance products, but also products that can interoperate with the first smart contract platform.

In the post, they said they successfully tested Injective’s EVM environment to allow Ethereum-compatible smart contracts to run natively on that rail once deployed to the mainnet.

This deployment means that the injection eliminates the need for cross-chain bridges or roll-ups, and Defi protocols that are attempting to run on Ethereum take advantage of low cost and high scalability to work simultaneously with neglect.

An EVM environment aimed at integrating 320-800 TPS provided in a simulated environment in the mainnet during testing. However, it could potentially process up to 12,500 transactions per second, or up to four times faster than other EVM-based solutions.

This test and planned mainnet launch complement the ignored multi-vertle machine token standard (MTS), reducing duplication and improving complexity.

Injective leads RWA tokenized charge

Injective Protocol launched SBET stock on the mainnet after releasing its first Chain Digital Assets Treasury (DAT) last week.

Through DAT, Injective Protocol will tokenize the SBET stock and public company Sharplink will reflect MicroStrategy’s plans and launch Ethereum Treasury.

SBET Stock Tokenization converts Sharplink’s static ETH holdings into tradable assets 24/7, 7 days a year, generating yields; It will be used As collateral for Defi protocols supported via Injective Protocol Iassets.

Injective, Bondi Finance also introduced tokenized bonds as reject-centric platforms move more and more towards real-world assets.

According to an update from Ripple, the long-awaited XRPL EVM Sidechain is now live on mainnet.

A few highlights of what this entails include:

  • Full EVM compatibility with Solidity, MetaMask, Hardhat, and more
  • PoA consensus and more than 25 validators
  • 3.4 seconds block time and over 1,000 TPS
  • XRP as a native gas token
  • Smart contract support via the Ethereum Virtual Machine

Speaking on the matter was David Schwartz, CTO at Ripple and the co-creator of the XRP Ledger, who said:

“The XRPL EVM Sidechain introduces a flexible environment for developers to deploy EVM-based applications, while maintaining a connection to the XRPL’s efficiency. It extends the capabilities of the ecosystem without changing the fundamentals that make the XRPL reliable.”

What is the XRPL EVM Sidechain?

The XRPL EVM Sidechain brings forward a secure and fast side network that is connected to the main XRP Ledger through the Axelar bridge.

This provides greater optionality of users and even though it is technically its own separate network, it is directly compatible and native XRPL developers can benefit from its unique characteristics and broader institutional focus.

Some of the main features, besides the above, include:

XRP Ledger’s EVM Sidechain is Live on Testnet

Built using the evmOS software stack, the sidechain is currently live on testnet, with a mainnet launch expected later this quarter after further validator onboarding.

Unlike Ethereum-native blockchains, the XRP Ledger does not currently support the EVM environment that powers most decentralized applications.

The new sidechain aims to fill that gap while preserving XRP’s efficiency. A bridge will link the sidechain to the XRP Ledger mainnet, using Axelar as the sole provider for asset transfers.

Wrapped XRP will act as the gas token on the EVM sidechain, enabling smart contract execution without leaving the broader XRP ecosystem.

While the Flare Network already offers an EVM-compatible solution for XRP users, this move brings Ethereum integration directly under Ripple’s umbrella.

In May, the XRP Ledger expanded its stablecoin offerings with the launch of two new region-specific assets, including EURØP, a MiCA-compliant euro stablecoin from Schuman Financial, and USDB, a dollar-pegged token issued by Brazil’s Braza Group.

EURØP, backed by euros and safeguarded by major institutions like Societe Generale, marks the first fully MiCA-compliant euro stablecoin on XRPL.

Meanwhile, Braza Group’s USDB stablecoin, backed by U.S. and Brazilian bonds, offers Brazilian users a secure digital asset for payments and hedging.

XRP Faces Backlash as Ripple Aligns With Europe on Digital Euro Project

As reported, serial entrepreneur and investor Gary Cardone has launched a scathing attack on XRP, accusing the digital asset of aligning itself with centralized governments in a bid to stay relevant.

His remarks follow ongoing speculation that the European Central Bank (ECB) may integrate the XRP Ledger into its digital euro infrastructure.

While the ECB has not confirmed any formal partnership with Ripple or its XRP Ledger, rumors have circulated across crypto circles.

Cardone went further, likening XRP’s influence in finance to a new virus, calling it “COVID-19 Part Two in finance.”

He warned that continued support for the token amounts to voting for “European warmongers,” framing XRP’s ambitions as a threat to freedom rather than a step forward in financial innovation.

The comments drew immediate backlash from the XRP community, which labeled the remarks as inflammatory and unfounded.

Robert Doyle, known online as Crypto Sensei, countered Cardone’s statements by noting that “there is no official confirmation” that Ripple technology will be used for the digital euro.

MATTER LABS SUED FOR ALLEGED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY THEFT: Matter Labs, the company behind layer-2 blockchain ZKSync, has been sued by BANKEX, a defunct digital asset banking platform, for intellectual property theft. According to a complaint filed Mar. 19 with the New York State Supreme Court, former BANKEX employees Alexandr Vlasov and Petr Korolev allegedly stole the company’s technology to start Matter Labs, which received over $450 million in venture capital funding and has become a major player in the blockchain industry. Vitalik Buterin has proposed a long-term overhaul to Ethereum’s execution environment to replace the Ethereum Virtual Machine with RISC-V, a standardized and extensible instruction set architecture.

The proposal, shared in the Ethereum Magicians forum on April 20, outlines a multi-phase shift to improve proving efficiency and simplify the execution layer, without changing core abstractions like accounts, storage, or cross-contract calls.

Per Buterin, while writing contracts directly in Rust would be technically possible, readability concerns and developer familiarity with existing languages suggest that Rust will not replace Solidity at the application layer. Existing EVM contracts would continue to operate and interact fully with new RISC-V-based contracts, preserving backward compatibility.

Execution bottlenecks and long-term scaling

Buterin identified execution as one of Ethereum’s final long-term bottlenecks, after near-term issues are mitigated by EIPs such as delayed execution, block-level access lists, and distributed historical storage.

In particular, he pointed to proving costs in ZK-EVMs as the key constraint for future scalability. Analysis from Succinct’s ZK-EVM indicates that block execution alone accounts for nearly half of all prover cycles, while the remainder is consumed by witness data handling and state tree operations.

While state-related overhead can be reduced by shifting from Keccak-based Patricia trees to binary trees with prover-optimized hash functions such as Poseidon, block execution efficiency will remain limiting unless the EVM is addressed directly.

Buterin noted that ZK-EVMs already compile to RISC-V under the hood, suggesting that exposing RISC-V as the primary VM could eliminate a layer of abstraction and yield efficiency gains. Some test scenarios reportedly show 100x improvements in prover performance by bypassing EVM translation altogether.

Coexistence, migration, and simplification paths

Multiple implementation pathways are under consideration. The most conservative would allow dual support for both EVM and RISC-V contracts, maintaining interoperable calls and shared access to persistent state. EVM contracts would continue to function and could call into or be called by RISC-V contracts via system calls mapped to traditional opcodes such as CALL, SLOAD, and SSTORE.

A more aggressive approach involves transforming existing EVM contracts into wrappers that delegate execution to an EVM interpreter written in RISC-V. Under this model, a contract’s bytecode would be replaced with logic that routes calls and execution parameters to a designated RISC-V interpreter contract, receives the return value, and forwards it to the caller.

An intermediate strategy proposes protocol-level support for virtual machine interpreters, enshrining this delegation process and enabling multiple execution formats to coexist. While EVM would be the first VM supported under this model, others, including Move, could be added in the future.

Each approach seeks to balance compatibility with long-term simplification. According to Buterin, incremental simplifications to the EVM, such as removing SELFDESTRUCT, have proven difficult due to complex edge cases and legacy behaviors.

A complete transition to RISC-V could enable a more maintainable base layer with minimal execution logic, comparable in compactness to projects like Tinygrad that enforce strict codebase limits.

Broader design philosophy and alignment with Beam Chain

The proposal aligns with ongoing efforts like the beam chain initiative, which aims to simplify Ethereum’s consensus mechanism. The RISC-V plan would bring parallel improvements to the execution layer, enabling the network to pursue modularity and reduced complexity across both domains.

As posted on Ethereum Magicians, Buterin characterized the proposal as a radical but possibly necessary step toward realizing long-term L1 efficiency and simplicity. While active EIPs and statelessness frameworks address short- and medium-term scalability improvements, Ethereum’s future as a performant and sustainable protocol may hinge on architectural changes of this magnitude.

No timeline has been announced for any implementation phase. The Ethereum community is expected to engage in further discussion to evaluate trade-offs, tooling impact, and developer migration paths as part of a longer deliberation cycle.

The proposal remains exploratory and is intended to open a broader conversation about the direction of Ethereum’s execution environment over the coming years.

Community response

Some community members raised strategic and technical reservations in response to Buterin’s proposal. Adam Cochran questioned the prioritization of L1 efficiency at the potential expense of L2 enablement, suggesting that enshrining RISC-V could narrow Ethereum’s modular roadmap.

He highlighted alternative proposals such as recursive proof aggregation, stateless commitment roots, and BLS signature unification, which could potentially offer broader systemic gains with fewer implementation costs.

Others, including Ben A Adams, Co-founder and CTO of Illyriad Games, and levs57, a web3 developer, pointed to performance trade-offs, particularly around hardware compatibility and the persistent role of precompiles.

Concerns included the difficulty of optimizing low-level RISC-V instructions back into efficient 256-bit operations and doubts about whether current zk-RISC-V systems are sufficiently mature or auditable to justify a foundational shift.

Buterin responded by downplaying the extent to which the EVM’s 256-bit word size constrains execution, stating that most values in practice are smaller, typically u32, u64, or u128, which compilers can efficiently map to RISC-V instructions.

He reiterated that today’s ZK-EVMs already operate as RISC-V environments embedding an EVM interpreter, framing direct exposure of RISC-V as a way to remove redundant layers. While acknowledging stack management and jumps as potential friction points, he maintained that eliminating interpretive overhead remains a net gain.

Blockchain development firm Peersyst Technology has confirmed the live testnet launch of an Ethereum-compatible sidechain for the XRP Ledger. The project, known as the XRPL EVM sidechain, is being propelled by a collaboration that includes RippleX—the research and development arm of Ripple—as well as the Web3 interoperability platform Axelar Network and blockchain science firm Common Prefix.

Announcing the milestone on X, Peersyst Technology proclaimed: “The wait is over… Excited to share that the XRPL EVM Sidechain is now live on Testnet! In a great collaborative effort between RippleX, Axelar, Common Prefix and Peersyst teams, we’ve been able to complete this critical milestone in preparation for the Mainnet launch, which is now just around the corner. A new era of interoperability and programmability for XRP is upon us.”

The team has launched a new website, xrplevm.org, where developers can integrate the EVM Testnet into MetaMask. A faucet enables users to easily obtain tokens on the EVM testnet, while an additional faucet is accessible via the Discord community. Another highlight is the introduction of a new bridge, powered by Squid Router, that allows for cross-chain transfers between the XRPL and the EVM sidechain.

Peersyst also called on the developer community to begin migrating projects from Devnet to Testnet, noting in its announcement: “Calling all developers of the XRPL EVM sidechain. You can now migrate your projects from Devnet to Testnet to test them in a production environment. We’ve released new documentation with step-by-step support for users, developers, and validators. All information is updated and available at the new docs.xrplevm.org.”

Bringing Ethereum Smart Contracts To The XRP Ledger

According to the official documentation, the EVM is an extended environment built on the Cosmos SDK, designed to run Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) smart contracts. The sidechain utilizes a Proof-of-Authority (PoA) consensus model, emphasizing low latency and high performance while still retaining the security features of the XRPL.

Axelar Network enables asset and message transfer between the XRPL and other blockchains, with the token bridged from the main ledger serving as the native currency on the sidechain. The sidechain fully supports Solidity-based smart contracts, offering developers the chance to reuse popular Ethereum tools such as Remix, Truffle, and MetaMask.

Moreover, transaction finality is under four seconds, and fees are significantly lower compared to Ethereum, creating a cost-effective environment for dApp development. Axelar integration and a dedicated EVM bridge allow for seamless asset movement between XRPL, the EVM sidechain, and other networks, enabling advanced use cases in DeFi and NFTs.

Built using Cosmos SDK and powered by Evmos, the EVM is designed for modular scalability, supporting Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) through the CometBFT (Tendermint) protocol.

The EVM sidechain aims to merge XRPL’s well-known speed and affordability with Ethereum’s versatile smart contract ecosystem. This opens the door to a range of possibilities, from cost-efficient decentralized application (dApp) development to cross-chain DeFi protocols and NFT platforms.

By integrating the ledger’s global payments infrastructure with EVM-based programmability, developers gain the flexibility to automate settlement processes, manage assets across blockchains, and create new financial tools that leverage XRP’s liquidity and low transaction costs.

Peersyst, along with RippleX, Axelar Network, and Common Prefix, has hinted at further announcements in the coming days—ranging from new infrastructure integrations to additional validator partnerships. With the testnet phase already underway, developers are encouraged to begin porting their Ethereum-compatible projects to the EVM sidechain.

A mainnet launch is expected soon, marking another step toward fully combining the XRPL’s established payment capabilities with the rapid growth of Web3 technologies. Peersyt writes: “The Mainnet launch […] is now just around the corner. […] There’s still a lot more to announce, but we’re taking it step by step. In the coming days, we’ll be announcing new partners, infrastructure, validators, and much more.”

Longer term, we believe we can eliminate gas as a user-facing concern in nearly all interactions.

A new feature called batched transactions (ERC-5792) is also on the way. This will let users complete multiple transaction steps, such as approving and swapping tokens, with a single click.

Additionally, MetaMask is shifting from Externally Owned Accounts to smart contract-based accounts. This upgrade will introduce new ways to manage assets while improving security.

He said in a February 24 post on X, “People are misunderstanding critique of repeated EVM hacks, the latest and the largest Bybit $1.4 billion missing the point: EVM can go to zero, no one cares. The problem is the EVM dumpster fire hurts ecosystem credibility, which unfairly bleeds over to Bitcoin”.

However, not everyone agrees with this view. Some argue that the Bybit hack was not caused by EVM flaws but rather by poor security measures, especially in handling multi-signature wallets. They point out that strong operational security can prevent such breaches, regardless of the underlying technology.

Back countered that Ethereum’s transaction verification process is fundamentally flawed. He explained that hardware wallets are supposed to confirm transaction details on-screen before approval, but EVM’s complexity makes this difficult.
