The US Department of Justice has recovered $40,300 in cryptocurrency that was stolen in a scam involving a fake Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee email.

On December 24, 2024, a donor received an email that appeared to come from Steve Witkoff, the committee’s co-chair, according to the Department of Justice’s press release on July 2.

The message used a nearly identical domain name to the real one, which swapped the letter “i” for a lowercase “l” in “t47lnaugural.com”.

The victim transferred $250,300 in USDT, and the scammers immediately moved the funds through multiple crypto wallets to make it harder to trace.

Investigators at the FBI’s Washington Field Office used blockchain analysis to follow the trail of transactions. They were able to locate and recover $40,300 of the stolen funds. Prosecutors have filed a civil forfeiture case to return the recovered amount to the victim.

Steven Jensen of the FBI stated, “Impersonation scams take many forms and cost Americans billions in losses each year”. He advised the public to carefully verify email addresses and never send money or crypto to individuals they do not know personally.

He added that scammers often rely on small details, including minor changes in email addresses or domains, to trick victims into believing fraudulent messages are legitimate.

Grammarly, a grammar checking platform, has acquired the artificial intelligence (AI) email app Superhuman.

According to a July 1 report by Reuters, the two companies, both based in San Francisco, did not share how much the deal was worth.

Superhuman, created by Rahul Vohra, Vivek Sodera, and Conrad Irwin, has raised over $114 million from major investors, including a16z, IVP, and Tiger Global. The company currently earns about $35 million each year.

An accountant and adjunct business instructor from Scranton, Pennsylvania, is sentenced to federal prison for her involvement in a multi-state business email compromise scheme.

In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa says that 63-year-old Margo Ann Williams laundered $800,000 of proceeds from a scheme that was carried out between December 2022 and July 2023.

According to evidence presented at the trial, the email accounts of the five victims – a Cedar Rapids church, two businesses, a non-profit and an individual – were hacked while they were in the process of making large wire and automatic clearinghouse (ACH) transfers. 

The victims received spoofed emails containing instructions to change the routing information for the wire and ACH transfers. Believing that the emails were from legitimate and trusted sources, the victims instructed their banks to wire the funds according to the supposed new payment instructions.

The funds were rerouted to bank accounts that Williams controlled.

She subsequently relocated the funds to other bank accounts under her control before transferring the money to two crypto exchanges and another person in Florida. 

The banks discovered William’s fraudulent activities and closed her accounts, but she kept opening new ones at other banks in an effort to keep the scheme alive. She earned approximately $25,000 from the operation and spent the funds on many personal purchases, including an Apple watch and a luxury bag.

Williams, who claimed that she perpetrated the scheme at the direction of a famous British actor with whom she became romantically involved, was sentenced to four years in prison. She’s also ordered to pay $594,037 in restitution to her victims and must also serve a three-year term of supervised release following her imprisonment.

Decentralized private messaging platform Dmail has deepened its stance in the NFT realm by launching a non-fungible marketplace for email addresses. This latest development enables users to trade their email-themed collectibles, maximizing the utility of their digital assets.

Launched in 2021, Dmail aims to revolutionize how people interact by integrating email with blockchain technology, birthing a decentralized identifier (DID). Instead of submitting their personal information to an email company, Dmail allows users to create an account using their existing Web3 wallet addresses.

Helmed by artificial intelligence (AI), Dmail enables cross-chain email communication between users without disclosing personal data. The messaging platform also allows those with Web2 email addresses to send encrypted messages viewable only by the intended recipient.

Dmail introduced the NFT Domain to serve as an identifier that users can customize in their own way. They also serve as a bridge between holders and other products within the Dmail ecosystem. These non-fungible domains come in digits ranging from 4 to more than 12. The fewer the digits, the pricier the NFT domain. These digital collectibles can be transferred from one user to another. According to the platform’s website, over 3.16 million NFT domains have been minted. With the newly launched NFT marketplace, Dmail users and collectors can trade their domains at a 1% platform fee. Proceeds from the revenue will aid the development of the platform’s native cryptocurrency, $DMAIL. The crypto asset will also serve as the primary payment option on the BNB Chain.

The platform stated in its announcement that default wallet addresses are not tradeable. Instead, it supports trading for unique domains.

To incentivize its community to partake in the marketplace, Dmail NFT domain holders receive 300 points whenever they list their domains on the platform. Acquiring a domain on the market allows holders to receive 20x the purchase amount of the collectible. Various NFT platforms, such as OpenSea and Nifty Island, have adopted point systems to encourage users to utilize their products.

Cybercriminals are attempting to extort education workers after a hack left their sensitive personal data at risk.

Early this year, an investigation from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike determined that PowerSchool – which operates a widely-used Student Information System (SIS) – witnessed a data breach affecting millions of US school kids.

PowerSchool’s SIS software helps schools track students’ attendance, grades, addresses and oftentimes very specific personal information like Social Security numbers or health history.

PowerSchool disclosed that “current and former students and educators” had their names, contact details, dates of birth, limited medical alert information, Social Security numbers and “other related information” compromised.

Months later, state school leaders and employees from at least 20 North Carolina school systems have reported that hackers have attempted to extort them via threatening emails.

The NBC-affiliated WRAL News reports that the extortion attempt asks for a payment in cryptocurrency in exchange for keeping the victims’ data secret.

While PowerSchool says that the threat has been contained, cybersecurity expert Doug Levin said to “take that with a grain of salt.”

Says Levin,

“We also always encourage literally everyone, whether you’ve been caught up in this incident or not, to just freeze their credit records at the credit reporting agencies… It is a simple step that you can take to provide some measure of protection against financial fraud against yourself, should your information ever get exposed in a data breach like this one…

Incidents have been happening more frequently. They’ve been more sophisticated. They have also been more significant in terms of their impact, whether you’re talking about money or amounts, or the sensitivity of data that has been released.

And one of the things that school systems are doing now is also looking and asking questions of all of their vendors and third parties they do business with, like PowerSchool. There is certainly a trend right now that school systems are beginning to ask many more questions of their vendors and partners to ensure that they have strong cybersecurity in place, while school systems as well are shoring up their cybersecurity practices.”

Microsoft says it partially mitigated a week-long Exchange Online outage causing delays or failures when sending or receiving email messages.

While the company didn’t publicly share information on this incident, it tagged it as a critical service issue tracked under EX1027675 on the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

Microsoft has yet to share more information on what regions were affected by this outage, but it said the incident impacted “any user serviced by the impacted portion of infrastructure.”

Customers worldwide also reported experiencing email delivery failures over the last week, with those impacted saying they were receiving a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) with a “554 5.6.0 Corrupt message content” error.

The company first acknowledged the Exchange Online email delivery issues on March 10, 11:14 AM, but the admin center incident report says the outage started on March 7, 12:30 PM UTC.

“A recent service update, intended to improve our message transport services, introduced a code issue that resulted in impact for a portion of service infrastructure,” Redmond said in the final update regarding this incident on Thursday.

“Additionally, users may be unable to send email messages with attached files in any connection method of Exchange Online. Sending attachments as ZIP files allows the email messages to be delivered as expected, serving as a method by which to bypass the issue while we continue to investigate.”

Similar issue still causing email delivery failures

Microsoft continues to track a separate incident with a nearly identical impact under EX1030895 after successfully mitigating EX1027675 with a fix that rolled out Wednesday morning.

This second incident is still ongoing, with the company saying it’s “limited to a small subset of messages” that trigger NDR failures and intermittent plain text calendar invite emails with winmail.dat attachments.

Although it is still working on finding the root cause of these email delivery failures, Redmond says it’s testing a potential fix deployed on an isolated section of its infrastructure.

“We’re conducting multiple targeted restarts of machines containing the fix to ensure the expected relief is achieved,” Microsoft said earlier today. “Additionally, we’re closely monitoring our diagnostic telemetry data to isolate the root cause of the issue, and we’re reviewing the overall service health during this process.”

Two weeks ago, the company linked a weekend Microsoft 365 outage affecting Outlook and Exchange Online authentication to another “code issue.” A subsequent advisory revealed that Exchange Online users still had issues accessing calendars and email messages using the iOS native mail app.

Days later, it mitigated one more Microsoft 365 outage affecting Teams customers and causing call failures.
