Senator Elizabeth Warren has voiced concern that new crypto-related laws may give an unfair financial advantage to President Donald Trump.

She claimed the recent legislation could help Trump’s family business, which is active in the crypto industry and reportedly backed by large amounts of foreign funding.

In an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Warren argued that the crypto industry has had too much influence in shaping its own rules.

She stated:

We need regulation that limits the corruption and the ability of elected officials to trade in it, that also limits the ability to blow up the economy with crypto.

Warren pointed to the GENIUS Act, which has already passed, and the CLARITY Act, which is still under review. She said they reflect the growing pressure from crypto lobbyists and lack strong protections against misuse.

Her main concern centers on the Trump family’s financial involvement through World Liberty Financial. Warren noted that without stronger oversight, there is a risk that personal business interests could influence national policy.

She argued that the connection between public power and private gain must be addressed before it undermines public trust.

According to Warren, the current system of crypto oversight is not strong enough. She described the rules as “weak, weak restrictions” because they leave room for misuse by criminals, including those involved in terrorism or drug trafficking.

Recently, US senators, including Warren, called on the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to address potential conflicts of interest involving President Trump’s cryptocurrency activities. What did they say? Read the full story.

Firing Jerome Powell will crash financial markets — Sen. Elizabeth Warren https://earlybirdsinvest.com/firing-jerome-powell-will-crash-financial-markets-sen-elizabeth-warren/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/firing-jerome-powell-will-crash-financial-markets-sen-elizabeth-warren/#respond Fri, 18 Apr 2025 22:46:03 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/firing-jerome-powell-will-crash-financial-markets-sen-elizabeth-warren/

US Senator Elizabeth Warren warned that if President Donald Trump eventually moves to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, it could undermine investor confidence in the integrity of US capital markets and trigger a financial crash.

During an appearance on CNBC, the Massachusetts Senator said the President does not have the legal authority to remove Powell from his position. Moreover, removing Powell would weaken the financial infrastructure of the US, Warren added:

“If Chairman Powell can be fired by the President of the United States, it will crash the markets. The infrastructure that keeps this stock market strong and, therefore, a big part of our economy strong, and a big part of the world economy strong, is the idea that the big pieces move independently of politics.”

“If interest rates in the United States are subject to a president who just wants to wave his magic wand, this doesn’t distinguish us from any other two-bit dictatorship,” Warren continued.

President Trump has repeatedly called for Powell’s termination, citing the chairman’s hesitancy to lower interest rates. Lower interest rates are usually considered a positive catalyst for risk-on asset prices, including cryptocurrencies, and could reverse the market downturn brought on by the trade war and current macroeconomic pressures.

Trump’s feud with the Federal Reserve chairman

Trump criticized Powell for not cutting interest rates and called for his termination again in an April 17 Truth Social post, which inflamed speculation that he would follow through on threats and find a way to remove the chairman.

Senator Rick Scott echoed Trump’s calls to remove Powell. “It’s time to clean house of everyone working at the Federal Reserve who isn’t on board with helping the American people and fighting for their best interests,” Scott wrote in an opinion piece published on Fox News.

The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that lowering interest rates is a top priority. Market analyst and investor Anthony Pompliano recently speculated that Trump deliberately crashed financial markets to force lower interest rates.

At the time, Pompliano cited a reduction in the yield of the 10-year US Treasury Bond to just 4%. The 10-year bond yield has climbed back up to 4.3% since then.

A coalition of US lawmakers led by Senator Elizabeth Warren has introduced a new ethics reform bill targeting Special Government Employees (SGEs) like Elon Musk and White House crypto advisor David Sacks.

The proposal, titled the Special Government Employee Ethics Enforcement and Reform (SEER) Act, seeks to apply stricter transparency and accountability standards to individuals serving in advisory roles while maintaining private sector ties.

SGEs are part-time federal workers allowed to serve up to 130 days a year. Unlike full-time officials, they are not always required to disclose their financial interests unless they surpass a specific pay grade.

This structure has raised concerns about conflicts of interest, especially in cases involving high-profile figures like Elon Musk, who serves in advisory capacities while holding leadership roles in private companies with federal contracts.

Senator Warren argued that individuals like Musk, who benefit from major government deals, should not be allowed to operate in such ethical gray zones. According to her, Musk earns millions from government contracts yet avoids the disclosure requirements expected of senior officials.

The SEER Act has received support from a broad coalition of advocacy and watchdog groups. These include Public Citizen, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the Project On Government Oversight (POGO), State Democracy Defenders, Campaign Legal Center, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), and the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU).

SEER’s key provisions

The SEER Act would expand existing ethics rules to cover SGEs starting from their 61st day in office. After 130 days, SGEs would be prohibited from receiving outside compensation related to their non-government roles.

The bill also introduces stricter conflict-of-interest rules. SGEs who lead companies with federal contracts or monopolistic power would be barred from engaging with agencies that regulate or contract with those companies.

Meanwhile, the legislation requires the Office of Government Ethics to approve all conflict-of-interest waivers for SGEs to increase public oversight. It also mandates public access to these waivers and financial disclosures.

Additionally, the Office of Personnel Management would create a public database listing all SGEs, including the number of days served and the reason for their classification.

If passed, the SEER Act would raise the ethical bar for part-time government advisors and limit the influence of corporate leaders in shaping federal policy behind closed doors.

Senator Elizabeth Warren Warns Stablecoins Could ‘Blow Up Our Entire Financial System’ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/senator-elizabeth-warren-warns-stablecoins-could-blow-up-our-entire-financial-system/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/senator-elizabeth-warren-warns-stablecoins-could-blow-up-our-entire-financial-system/#respond Wed, 26 Mar 2025 13:27:27 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/senator-elizabeth-warren-warns-stablecoins-could-blow-up-our-entire-financial-system/

Senator Elizabeth Warren is worried a bipartisan stablecoin bill working its way through Congress doesn’t do enough to address the systemic risks she thinks the dollar-pegged assets pose.

Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) introduced the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins (GENIUS) Act in February.

The legislation, which aims to establish regulatory clarity for stablecoins, passed out of the Senate Banking Committee on March 13th by a bipartisan 18-6 vote.

In a speech to the committee earlier this month, Warren (D-Massachusetts) said the bill doesn’t protect consumers, national security or financial stability.

“The bill lacks basic safeguards necessary to ensure that stablecoins don’t blow up our entire financial system. Under this bill, stablecoin issuers can invest in risky assets, including the very assets that were bailed out in 2008 and again in 2020. And anyone who thinks the US taxpayer won’t be called on, directly or indirectly, to bail out these guys out is kidding themselves. Circle, one of the largest stablecoin companies in the world, would have blown up in 2023 if regulators hadn’t bailed out its $3.3 billion of deposits at Silicon Valley Bank. This bill begs for more bailouts.”

The potential legislation would require stablecoin issuers to maintain backing for their assets on a 1:1 ratio.

The bill states that stablecoin issuer reserves can be made up of US currency; funds held as demand deposits or insured shares at an insured depository institution; and Treasury bills, notes or bonds.
