StarkWare, a company specializing in zero-knowledge (ZK) technology, a way of verifying information without revealing the specific contents of that information, said it created a ZK verification of the Bitcoin (BTC) blockchain that can run on mobile devices.

The proof contains all the Bitcoin block headers from the genesis block until the present, but not the full and detailed Bitcoin blockchain history, which is over 680 gigabytes in size. 

Each block header includes the version number of the Bitcoin software used to mine the block, a reference to the previous block in the chain, a timestamp, the block size and the nonce — the random number the miner has to find to add the block to the ledger.

StarkWare’s BTC ledger proof comes in at just 1 megabyte (MB) in size, to provide users with a way of verifying transactions in under 100 milliseconds, Abdelhamid Bakhta, head of ecosystem at StarkWare, told Cointelegraph.

The lightweight client builds on Simplified Payment Verification (SPV), a concept outlined in Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper, which allows smaller lightweight nodes a way of verifying payments without having to download the full ledger.

StarkWare’s announcement is significant in that it will allow any user to verify Bitcoin payments without setting up a full Bitcoin node, which can cost between $300 to $1,000, and may be too technically complex for the average user to properly install.

Node storage requirements and ledger size become points of contention in the BTC community

The requirements to run a Bitcoin node are relatively easier than those of other blockchain networks, which may require tens of thousands of dollars to run. 

Bitcoin nodes can run on retail personal computers due to the relative simplicity of the Bitcoin protocol, which has generated only 680 gigabytes of data since 2009.

This relative simplicity and accessible hardware requirements are key to preserving decentralization of the protocol and maintaining Bitcoin’s consensus mechanism, which is enforced by independent node runners.

If nodes become too expensive because of mounting hardware requirements, the network becomes centralized under large service providers with the resources to run the required hardware, going against Bitcoin’s core value proposition. 

Inscriptions, ordinals, and other forms of non-monetary data storage on the blockchain create this centralization risk by increasing the size of the ledger and requiring node operators to store significant amounts of non-monetary data, critics say.

In May, Bitcoin Core, the developers of the software used by about 80% of BTC node runners, announced that the upcoming Bitcoin Core 30 update, slated for release in October, will remove the OP_Return limit, which caps the amount of non-monetary data that can be embedded in Bitcoin transactions.

The OP_Return limit is currently 80 bytes, far too small to store the majority of images and multimedia content today, and the proposed change has prompted a historic surge in users running Bitcoin Knots nodes.

Bitcoin Knots is an alternative Bitcoin node software and features more customizable parameters, including options for the node runners to limit the amount of OP_Return data they will store in their memory pools and relay to other nodes. 

Knots nodes now account for nearly 20% of the network in 2025 — an almost vertical increase from the end of 2024, when Knots nodes accounted for about 1% of the total market share.

This is Part Two of our three-part post on how U.S. citizens and green-card holders can protect themselves at the border, in which we interviewed deputy director of ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, Nathan Freed Wessler.

In Part One, we covered the rights of U.S. citizens reentering the country, including advice on what to do if U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents decide to interrogate. In this second part, we dive into what border agents are legally allowed — and not allowed — do with your phone and laptop. We also discuss how to protect your data, and why a burner Chromebook might not be such a crazy idea after all.

“The fear is real,” Wessler warned us. But he said the risk is higher for some citizens over others. Read on to determine how far you, as an American or green-card holder, might want to go in protecting yourself and your digital privacy before your next international trip.

Let’s talk about your devices. If CBP [Customs and Border Protection] wants to search your phone or computer, and you’re a U.S. citizen, do they have the right to do so?

Wessler: They claim the right to do that. Of course, if you’re inside the country, the basic rule is that when the government wants to search your private things or private space, they need to go to a judge first, demonstrate probable cause, and get a warrant.

At the border, the government can search your stuff — no warrant requirement, not even a requirement of individualized suspicion. The government takes the position that cell phones and laptops are just like suitcases, and they should have exactly the same latitude to search them. They can do it to everybody. They can do it because it’s a Tuesday. They can do it because they’re picking all gray-haired travelers today, whatever it is.

What do they actually do when they search your phone or laptop?

Wessler: The government distinguishes between two different kinds of searches: what they call basic searches and what they call advanced searches.

The US Justice Department has closed its investigation into Kraken’s founder Jesse Powell, and returned dozens of laptops and mobile phones agents seized during an FBI raid two years ago, Fortune reported on July 22.

The federal case did not revolve around Kraken’s operations, but rather a bitter governance fight at the Verge Center for the Arts, a Sacramento nonprofit Powell founded in 2008.

News of the raid first surfaced in The New York Times, which reported that agents were probing allegations Powell had “hacked and cyber-stalked” the nonprofit.

Court filings since then depict something far less cinematic: a dispute over who controlled Slack and Google Workspace accounts after Powell was pushed off Verge’s board. 

Powell insisted he never cut off anyone’s access and argues instead that Verge insiders quietly created a new domain and parallel work accounts before moving to oust him. 

He is pursuing a civil lawsuit in state court, accusing former colleagues of defamation and wrongful removal.

Justice Department drops the case

Documents Powell filed this week include a so-called declination letter from prosecutors, confirming the Justice Department has walked away from the case.

His attorney said he requested the letter to counter the reputational damage caused by the raid and to reassure banks and regulators that Kraken’s leadership is not under federal scrutiny. 

Powell called the search “devastating” personally and professionally, maintaining that discovery in his lawsuit has already shown the accusations to be baseless.

The government’s exit does not resolve lingering questions. Neither the Justice Department nor the FBI would comment on how the Times obtained details of the investigation.

Powell’s latest filings also accuse two Verge board members, one of them attorney Phil Cunningham, of withholding key documents during discovery. 

Verge, meanwhile, continues to operate as a fixture of Sacramento’s arts scene, supported over the years by more than $1 million in donations and extensive tech assistance from Powell. 

Notably, Powell declined to say whether the returned devices held Bitcoin or other digital assets. When agents seized the hardware, Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $23,000. As of press time, BTC trades near $119,000.

When you hear the word “neurotechnology,” you may picture Black Mirror headsets prying open the last private place we have — our own skulls — or the cyber-samurai of William Gibson’s Neuromancer. That dread is natural, but it can blind us to the real potential being realized in neurotech to address the long intractable medical challenges found in our brains. In just the past 18 months, brain tech has cleared three hurdles at once: smarter algorithms, shrunken hardware, and — most important — proof that people can feel the difference in their bodies and their moods.

A pacemaker for the brain

Keith Krehbiel has battled Parkinson’s disease for nearly a quarter-century. By 2020, as Nature recently reported, the tremors were winning — until neurosurgeons slipped Medtronic’s Percept device into his head. Unlike older deep-brain stimulators that carpet-bomb movement control regions in the brain with steady current, the Percept listens first. It hunts the beta-wave “bursts” in the brain that mark a Parkinson’s flare and then fires back millisecond by millisecond, an adaptive approach that mimics the way a cardiac pacemaker paces an arrhythmic heart.

In the ADAPT-PD study, patients like Krehbiel moved more smoothly, took fewer pills, and overwhelmingly preferred the adaptive mode to the regular one. Regulators on both sides of the Atlantic agreed: The system now has US and EU clearance.

Because the electrodes spark only when symptoms do, total energy use is reduced, increasing battery life and delaying the next skull-opening surgery. Better yet, because every Percept shipped since 2020 already has the sensing chip, the adaptive mode can be activated with a simple firmware push, the way you’d update your iPhone.

Scientists applied the same listen-then-zap logic farther down the spinal cord this year. In a Nature Medicine pilot, researchers in Pittsburgh laid two slender electrode strips over the sensory roots of the lumbar spine in three adults with spinal muscular atrophy. Gentle pulses “reawakened” half-dormant motor neurons: Every participant walked farther, tired less, and — astonishingly — one person strode from home to the lab without resting.

Half a world away, surgeons at Nankai University threaded a 50-micron-thick “stent-electrode” through a patient’s jugular vein, fanned it against the motor cortex, and paired it with a sleeve that twitched his arm muscles. No craniotomy, no ICU — just a quick catheter procedure that let a stroke survivor lift objects and move a cursor. High-tech rehab is inching toward outpatient care.

Mental-health care on your couch

The brain isn’t only wires and muscles; mood lives there, too. In March, the Food and Drug Administration tagged a visor-like headset from Pulvinar Neuro as a Breakthrough Device for major-depressive disorder. The unit drips alternating and direct currents while an onboard algorithm reads brain rhythms on the fly, and clinicians can tweak the recipe over the cloud. The technology offers a ray of hope for patients whose depression has resisted conventional treatments like drugs.

Thought cursors and synthetic voices

Cochlear implants for people with hearing loss once sounded like sci-fi; today more than 1 million people hear through them. That proof-of-scale has emboldened a new wave of brain-computer interfaces, including from Elon Musk’s startup Neuralink. The company’s first user, 30-year-old quadriplegic Noland Arbaugh, told Wired last year he now “multitasks constantly” with a thought-controlled cursor, clawing back some of the independence lost to a 2016 spinal-cord injury. Neuralink isn’t as far along as Musk often claims — Arbaugh’s device experienced some problems, with some threads detaching from the brain — but the promise is there.

On the speech front, new systems are decoding neural signals into text on a computer screen, or even synthesized voice. In 2023 researchers from Stanford and the University of California San Francisco installed brain implants in two women who had lost the ability to speak, and managing to hit decoding times of 62 and 78 words per minute, far faster than previous brain tech interfaces. That’s still much slower than the 160 words per minute of natural English speech, but more recent advances are getting closer to that rate.

Guardrails for gray matter

Yes, neurotech has a shadow. Brain signals could reveal a person’s mood, maybe even a voting preference. Europe’s new AI Act now treats “neuro-biometric categorization” — technologies that can classify individuals by biometric information, including brain data — as high-risk, demanding transparency and opt-outs, while the US BRAIN Initiative 2.0 is paying for open-source toolkits so anyone can pop the hood on the algorithms.

And remember the other risk: doing nothing. Refusing a proven therapy because it feels futuristic is a little like turning down antibiotics in 1925 because a drug that came from mold seemed weird.

Twentieth-century medicine tamed the chemistry of the body; 21st-century medicine is learning to tune the electrical symphony inside the skull. When it works, neurotech acts less like a hammer than a tuning fork — nudging each section back on pitch, then stepping aside so the music can play.

Real patients are walking farther, talking faster, and, in some cases, simply feeling like themselves again. The challenge now is to keep our fears proportional to the risks — and our imaginations wide enough to see the gains already in hand.

A hacker group known as Librarian Ghouls, also known as Rare Werewolf, has taken control of hundreds of computers in Russia to secretly mine cryptocurrency, according to a Kaspersky report on June 9.

The group uses phishing emails containing malicious files to gain unauthorized access to systems. These emails look like regular messages from real companies and often contain what appear to be invoices or official documents.

Once opened, the file installs malware that gives hackers remote access. From there, they disable built-in protections, such as Windows Defender.

Kaspersky reported that the infected computers are programmed to turn on at 1 AM and shut down at 5 AM.

This quiet time window allows hackers to stay hidden while accessing the device, gathering passwords, and preparing it to mine cryptocurrency. The attackers also examine the system’s details, such as memory, processor speed, and graphics card, to configure the mining tool.

While mining is active, the device contacts the mining pool every minute to remain connected.

Kaspersky stated that the group also installs tools to stay connected to the machine long-term. Additionally, they often use fake websites to trick users into giving away their email account access.

The campaign began in December 2024 and is still ongoing. It has mostly affected Russian users, especially those at industrial companies and technical schools. A smaller number of victims have been found in Belarus and Kazakhstan.

OpenAI has announced the acquisition of io, a hardware company launched in 2024 by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.

The deal, worth $6.4 billion in stock, brings io’s team of about 55 engineers and product specialists into OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco.

The plan, according to the company’s announcement on May 21, is to build smaller, more personal devices that give users easier access to OpenAI’s tools.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, said, “Jony gave me one of the prototypes of the device for the first time to take home, and I’ve been able to live with it, and I think it is the coolest piece of technology that the world has ever seen”.

  • Xiaomi announces its Android 16 Developer Preview Program for those creating apps for its upcoming upgrade.
  • The preview will provide developers with the tools needed to develop their apps to sort of issues, but it’s only accepting the Xiaomi 15 and 14T Pro models.
  • Google recently achieved “Platform Stability” with Android 16, meaning its on track to deliver the next major OS in Q2.

Xiaomi is in the early stages of Android 16 development, and those creating apps can get a head start, too.

The Chinese OEM announced the start of its Android 16 Developer Preview Program for early app development (via Location Tracking Hub). Similar to Google, Xiaomi is encouraging interested developers to take part in its preview program, which provides all the tools they will need to “improve the compatibility” and develop their Android 16-supported apps. Interested parties are restricted to a pair of phones to start.

Xiaomi states its developer preview is accepting the Xiaomi 15 and the 14T Pro.

The announcement post states developers can get started in one of two ways: a local update or a fastboot update. For the former, devs must ensure their Xiaomi 15 is running OS2.0.109.0.VOCMIXM or higher. Owners of a 14T Pro need to have installed OS2.0.103.0.VNNMIXM or higher. The company has provided a complete guide on “how to” get started with the developer preview.

Xiaomi’s post didn’t tease any new features, so it’s unclear if developers can expect to see anything new before a more public beta for users drops.

An Early Android 16

We’re nearing the full release of a much earlier Android OS upgrade from Google as Android 16 reached “Platform Stability.” The update in late March marked a major milestone for the next software update as Google progresses with a rapid timeline for the future of Android. Platform Stability means all in-app behaviors have been finalized, and developers are given one last call for final changes to their apps.

April will hold any last-minute adjustments from Google and developers before it drops in users’ hands. Google said, “We’re putting additional energy into working with our device partners to bring the Q2 release to as many devices as possible.” Android 16 is expected to launch by the end of June.

So, it’s no surprise that Xiaomi is getting started on a developer preview of its own while it toils away at its HyperOS Android 16-skin.

Other OEMs have also started working on their Android 16 versions, like OnePlus and its flagship 13 model. Consumers with that device are getting their first glimpse of Android 16 as the company prepares for a rapid launch.

Android smartphones sold online at discounted prices are being shipped with hidden malware that can steal crypto and personal data, according to an April 1 report from the cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.

The malware, known as Triada, allows attackers to access nearly everything on the phone. It can read text messages, gather login details, and change cryptocurrency wallet addresses during transactions. This lets the attackers quietly move funds to their own accounts without the user noticing.

Kaspersky found that around $270,000 of digital assets had already been moved to wallets linked to the attackers. However, this number may be higher, especially since they also targeted Monero

What makes the threat harder to detect is that the malware is installed before the phone ever reaches the buyer. Some sellers may be unaware that the devices they offer are already compromised. Over 2,600 infections have been confirmed, mostly in Russia, and all reported within the first three months of 2025. Triada, which has been around since 2016, was initially used to target financial apps and messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Gmail, which often spread through fake apps or misleading links.

Neuralink, the brain tech company founded by Elon Musk, is inviting people from different countries to take part in trials of its brain implant.

The device is designed to let users control digital devices using only their thoughts.

The company is mainly looking for people with severe movement disabilities, including those who have lost control of their arms and legs due to spinal injuries or conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

According to a post shared on April 2 on X, Neuralink hopes to find more participants for its study, which it calls the PRIME trial.

This trial focuses on a chip implanted in the brain and reads signals linked to movement. The aim is to turn those signals into commands that can control a computer or smartphone.

Noland Arbaugh, the first person to get the implant, said in a March 28 post on X that there were “no negative side effects, neither physically nor psychologically” since he got the device. He uses the brain chip for various activities and estimates that he relies on it for over 10 hours daily.

He also mentioned that the implant has helped him find work as a travelling keynote speaker. The device makes it easier for him to write and communicate online.
