Zak Cole, a developer on Ethereum

, has lost access to one of his crypto wallets after unknowingly installing a harmful browser extension.

Cole explained in an August 12 post on X that the issue began when he added an extension called “contractshark.solidity-lang” to his setup through Cursor AI.

This extension appeared safe, since it had a detailed description, a familiar icon, and had already been downloaded over 54,000 times.

However, after installation, the software quietly accessed Cole’s local environment file. Within minutes, his private key was copied and sent to someone else.

The extension then allowed the attacker to access Cole’s wallet for three days. On August 10, all the funds in that wallet were removed. Cole explained that he had been working to finalize a smart contract when he added the tool, which led to the oversight.

Despite the breach, Cole did not lose much money. He only stores small amounts in easily accessible wallets used for testing, while his main assets are protected with hardware devices.

His investigation led him to reports from cybersecurity sources like Kaspersky and BleepingComputer, which linked the same extension to a larger theft campaign that has taken more than $500,000 from different victims.

As of now, the extension is still available on Cursor AI’s marketplace, and the publisher remains listed as a trusted source.

Koi Security recently reported that a cybercrime group named GreedyBear has stolen more than $1 million in cryptocurrency. How? Read the full story.

Coinbase debuts developer wallet with automatic 4.1% USDC rewards, notes regulatory clarity https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-debuts-developer-wallet-with-automatic-4-1-usdc-rewards-notes-regulatory-clarity/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-debuts-developer-wallet-with-automatic-4-1-usdc-rewards-notes-regulatory-clarity/#respond Wed, 06 Aug 2025 02:50:02 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-debuts-developer-wallet-with-automatic-4-1-usdc-rewards-notes-regulatory-clarity/

Coinbase unveiled a developer-focused wallet that automatically activates 4.1% rewards on USDC balances.

Called Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP) Embedded Wallets, the product is part of and is aimed at giving builders the same secure, scalable infrastructure that powers millions of Coinbase accounts, according to an August 5 announcement.

CDP Embedded Wallets support Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible chains and Solana, pairing “web2-style” logins via email, SMS, and OAuth with self-custody.

Keys are secured in trusted execution environments (TEEs), while developers can define policies and plug into a unified toolkit for onramps, swaps, transfers, balances, staking, and rewards.

Coinbase says developers can create brandable wallets in under 200ms, then monetize idle balances via the native 4.1% USDC rewards.

Early use cases include remittances, payment links, DeFi marketplaces, B2B payroll, creator payouts, and gaming with on-chain assets and free USDC sends on Base.

As part of the beta, Coinbase Onramp customers can use Embedded Wallets at no cost through September 30.

US stablecoin clarity propels movement

Coinbase ties the launch to fresh US policy momentum on stablecoins. The GENIUS Act cleared the House on July 17. It was signed into law on July 18, establishing the first federal framework for dollar-backed stablecoins and signaling regulatory support for “faster, cheaper” payments.

The House also passed the CLARITY Act the same day, sending it to the Senate. The CLARITY Act would create a regulatory regime for digital assets other than stablecoins and give the CFTC sole authority over transactions in digital commodities.

With that backdrop, Coinbase says developers are moving quickly to build on stablecoin-native rails, and the wallet’s auto-rewarding USDC feature is positioned to ride that shift.

Coinbase frames CDP Embedded Wallets as a way to cut integration overhead, replacing stitched-together APIs with a single stack while keeping users in a non-custodial flow.

For builders, the proposition offers a faster path to market, complete with familiar logins, end-to-end onboarding, and built-in yield on idle USDC.

Introducing the new ethereum.org developer portal https://earlybirdsinvest.com/introducing-the-new-ethereum-org-developer-portal/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/introducing-the-new-ethereum-org-developer-portal/#respond Tue, 15 Jul 2025 00:41:09 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/introducing-the-new-ethereum-org-developer-portal/

Hey Ethereum community! We last spoke August 5 – how you been? We’re here to talk about something fresh we’ve shipped.

Maybe you’ve already noticed, but we’ve got a new Developers section. For a long time, this content was a wall of links to products you might find helpful when building a dapp. We provided very little context and left a lot of connecting the dots up to you. We thought we could do better.

The new ethereum.org developer portal on different devices

Technical information about Ethereum is often fragmented, which can be a barrier for new developers who are trying to get their bearings.

Getting to grips with Ethereum development can feel like running uphill against a tide of outdated Stack Exchange threads and Medium articles. Or like having to wade through murky depths as you scour crypto Twitter for something useful.

So we set out to create an updatable repository for developer content that helps you:

  • Learn about Ethereum under the hood
  • Experiment with code
  • Understand the tech stack of dapps

And perhaps more importantly, we wanted it to be a place for community collaboration. Anyone can submit PRs to improve and maintain the content. We’ve already seen a fantastic willingness from the community to dive in and help us improve the docs which is awesome.

The new ethereum.org developer documentation on mobile

In other words, we wanted to create MDN for Ethereum. And use our pool of fantastic translators to help educate on a global scale.

We on the ethereum.org team don’t have all the answers but as a community we’re amazing at sharing wisdom. Now, you’ve got the place to do it.

How you can get involved

Like ethereum.org in general, the portal is open source and there are ways to help whether you’re technical or not.

  • Share your wisdom: we need experts to contribute information, code examples and more.
  • Submit tutorials: if you’ve written a tutorial to help Ethereum devs, add it to ethereum.org to extend its reach
  • Review content and PRs: expert on a topic? Help us make sure our content is as accurate as possible.
  • Provide feedback: any feedback on your experiences are really helpful for our team. Hit us up on Twitter or Discord.
  • Send us your ideas: everyone can help us design the best learning experiences possible.
  • Send to your friends: Got aspiring dev friends? Send ethereum.org/en/developers their way.

Contributors get credited wherever possible.

Right, time for a quick tour…

So what’s new?

Check out the site and let us know what you think over Twitter or on our Discord. But here’s a breakdown of what’s new right now:

The new ethereum.org developer documentation

Ethereum documentation that gives you the background you need to understand how Ethereum works and how to build on the web3 stack.

The new ethereum.org developer tutorial

You can now access community tutorials and write tutorials for ethereum.org to reach an enormous audience – we’ll be translating them to increase their reach.

The new ethereum.org developer portal links to frameworks

There are links to dapp development frameworks and other developer tools to help you get from an idea to a deployed dApp. And to support the fantastic community efforts out there.

This project is very much in the MVP phase. We wanted to get a base level of documentation out the door as a priority. In the near term we’ll be working on a series of improvements that:

  • better categorise the projects we list and add more filtering options, to help make choosing the right tool easier.
  • create more guided learning experiences, specifically for absolute beginners.
  • enrich the docs with helpful diagrams and videos (Know of any that would be great on one of our pages? Open a PR!).
  • get more contributors to help make the docs as helpful as possible.

A lot of these ideas came from usability tests we ran with some amazing members and potential members of the Ethereum community – huge thanks to them!.

In the long term, we want to include more features that show (as well as tell), inject more web3 into the portal itself, and develop incentives/rewards for contributors. If you have any ideas – we’d love your input.

Help needed right away

If you’ve got a way with words and you know your way around the Ethereum stack or the EVM, here’s a few open content issues you could help out with:

Thanks!

Although it’s still early days, we wouldn’t have got this far without some folks who have provided their insight and feedback along the way. A big thanks to these fine people who have helped us ship this portal in some way or another:

Andrei Tonkikh, Artur Gontijo, Togzhan Barakbayeva, Felipe Farragi, Adrian Li, Paul Berg, Christian Reitwiessner, Franziska Heintel, Ryan Ghods, Hudson Jameson, Austin Griffiths, Jordan Lesich, Charles St Louis, David Murdoch, Kevin Bluer, Brian Gu, Marc Garreau, Markus Waas, Rob Stupay, Yann Levreau, Scott Bigelow, Santiago Palladino, Sina Goodfiotit, Charles St. Louis, Griffin Hotchkiss, Mario Havel, Edson Allyon, Franco Zeoli, Pato Palladino, Albert Ni, and Eric Shepherd

Core Developer Apprenticeship Program https://earlybirdsinvest.com/core-developer-apprenticeship-program/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/core-developer-apprenticeship-program/#respond Tue, 24 Jun 2025 03:03:40 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/core-developer-apprenticeship-program/

Have you have ever been interested in getting involved in the development of the core Ethereum protocols? If so, there is a new program to discuss that’s targeted at you. As part of an EF procotol-support initiative, I’m very excited to announce the “Core Developer Apprenticeship Program”.

What to expect

Hi 👋, I’m Piper Merriam. I’ve been part of the Ethereum ecosystem for while. It’s been a wild ride. I’m reasonably sure that this is the best job I’ll ever have. This program is my way of trying to help more people find their way into doing impactful and interesting engineering work. Every day, I get to work with incredibly smart and hard working people on a cutting edge protocol. With the support of the Ethereum Foundation, I’m excited to give more people the opportunity to find their place in this ecosystem.

A few details:

  • Applications open through May 31st: Apply here
  • Program from mid-June through mid-September
  • Participants will identify and define a project aimed at improving the core Ethereum protocols.
  • Participants will have direct access to the community of core developers across organizations and teams.

The program will provide participants with an opportunity to gain deep knowledge of the Ethereum protocols, as well as providing them with first hand experience of how protocol development works and how they can be a part of that process.

Impacting Ethereum

Core protocol development isn’t easy work, but it is interesting, challenging, and rewarding (at least it is for me). Unfortunately, this work also has a very large barrier to entry. It requires a high degree of fluency in the actual protocols themselves. It requires a deep understanding of many different engineering concepts. It requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. The intention of this program is to provide an easier onramp for getting past these barriers, and to provide you with the initial support and guidance that launches you into working side by side with myself and all of the other “core devs.”

My work with Ethereum is the biggest “lever” I have to move the world. We’ve got a lot of very interesting and hard problems waiting for you. Anyone else want to move the world with me?

For more information about the program, click here for details and more on how to apply. 🛠

Epic Games sues Fortnite cheat developer for selling wallhack and auto-aim tools https://earlybirdsinvest.com/epic-games-sues-fortnite-cheat-developer-for-selling-wallhack-and-auto-aim-tools/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/epic-games-sues-fortnite-cheat-developer-for-selling-wallhack-and-auto-aim-tools/#respond Fri, 13 Jun 2025 17:45:15 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/epic-games-sues-fortnite-cheat-developer-for-selling-wallhack-and-auto-aim-tools/

Editor’s take: Multiplayer gaming is about fair fights, not shortcuts. But cheaters keep buying their wins, ruining it for everyone else. Epic Games is cracking down hard because cheating isn’t just unfair – it’s a threat to the whole game. Sorry, losers. Cheating doesn’t pay.

Epic Games recently announced a new lawsuit targeting developers of Fortnite cheating tools. The company is going after an individual who created software that lets players see through walls and use auto-aim. Epic shared the update on its ongoing battle via X, emphasizing that creating and distributing cheats violates the game’s terms of service and must be stopped.

Epic filed the lawsuit in its home state of North Carolina against Ediz Atas. Known online as “Sincey Cheats” and “Vanta Cheats,” Atas has developed, maintained, and sold Fortnite cheating software since January 2023. Epic said his products gave players an unfair advantage and breached Fortnite’s end-user license agreement. Epic is seeking damages from Atas and his partners, along with attorney’s fees and other legal costs.

The company claims that the cheating software bypasses its anti-cheat system and undermines Fortnite’s long-term business. Honest players forced to compete against cheaters are more likely to stop playing and buying in-game content, causing damages and losses to the company.

Atas went to extreme lengths to profit from his cheating business. He even tried to block Epic’s efforts to remove videos promoting the software, posing as an Epic representative in emails to YouTube in an attempt to reverse DMCA takedown requests. According to the lawsuit, his actions forced Epic to issue tens of thousands of Fortnite bans since 2022 – over 15,000 of them in the US alone.

Atas didn’t act alone. According to the lawsuit, at least five partners helped manage the business, selling Sincey Cheats and Vanta Cheats software to Fortnite players through various websites and encrypted messaging platforms like Discord and Telegram.

Epic has recently intensified its legal fight against Fortnite cheaters, pursuing not just software developers but also esports players caught using cheats. The company has forced some players to publicly apologize and return prize money, sending a clear message: cheaters don’t get paid – at least not when Epic is involved.

Maelstrom announces recipients of the fourth Bitcoin Developer Grant https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maelstrom-announces-recipients-of-the-fourth-bitcoin-developer-grant/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maelstrom-announces-recipients-of-the-fourth-bitcoin-developer-grant/#respond Thu, 12 Jun 2025 12:27:51 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/maelstrom-announces-recipients-of-the-fourth-bitcoin-developer-grant/

Maelstrom has announced that Ron, known online as “MacGyver13,” is the fourth recipient of the Maelstrom Bitcoin Grant program, in accordance with a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine. Ron is working on silent payments as proposed in Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 352.

“We are thrilled to support Ron financially on his mission to integrate silent payments into his Bitcoin wallet,” said CFO of Maelstrom Arthur Hayes. “Many merchants and users want to provide/display a single static address that is not altered. This is an important, valid and simple use case. With silent payments, this is still done, but reuse of on-chain addresses is avoided. Reuse of addresses is the Goldmine of the monitoring organization.

In September 2023, a silent payment was proposed by Josie Baker and Reuben Somsen. This creates a single static address for people to post tips without sharing with friends, using them for donations, or sacrificing privacy. This eliminates address reuse, an important method used by surveillance companies to track user behavior on blockchain.

“There are a lot of software projects, and perhaps with Bitcoin, taking an idea from a proposal to a fully adopted solution is the most difficult part,” Josie said. “We are excited by the progress we have made in the short time we’ve been working with Ron and are thrilled to help us adopt silent payments with the aim of protecting our users’ financial privacy while creating an intuitive and seamless user experience.”

Bitcoin privacy depends on using new addresses. This often requires a sender to the recipient interaction. Existing static address methods use notifications that increase costs and leak metadata. Silent payments avoid both interaction and notifications, but you need a wallet to scan the blockchain. The use of multi-party inputs has not yet been proven to be safe.

Silent Payment is aimed at implementing it.

  • Zero Transaction Cost Overhead
  • There is no possibility of a link between payment and a static address
  • No sender required to receiver interaction
  • Privacy tools and compatibility with the latest wallet features

“My main focus is coordinating development and testing efforts within a growing community dedicated to integrating silent payments into desktop and mobile Bitcoin wallets,” says the new grantee of Maelstrom Ron. “By proceeding with silent payments along with Bolt12 and BIP-353, we aim to enhance privacy, simplify the user experience and host ways to adopt Bitcoin more broadly as a payment solution.”

Core Developer Apprenticeship Program: The Second Cohort https://earlybirdsinvest.com/core-developer-apprenticeship-program-the-second-cohort/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/core-developer-apprenticeship-program-the-second-cohort/#respond Thu, 12 Jun 2025 02:46:29 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/core-developer-apprenticeship-program-the-second-cohort/

Does development of the core protocols that power the Ethereum blockchain excite you? Are you interested in getting involved at the most fundemental and technical levels of the Ethereum protocol?

I am excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the second cohort of the Core Developer Apprenticeship Program (CDAP)!

What is CDAP

My name is Piper Merriam and I’m a core developer. That means that development and maintenance of the Ethereum protocol is part of my job. Lately, protocol development has been accelerating. The “merge” is getting closer every day, the road to achieving “Stateless Ethereum” continues to evolve, and we have plans for cleaning up long-standing “warts” in the EVM. There is no shortage of things to be done, but unfortunately, there is a shortage of people who have the knowledge and expertise to do the work. That is where you come in.

This EF protocol-support initiative is my way of helping people find their way into core protocol development. Here are a few details:

  • Applications accepted through September 13th
  • Program runs from late September 2021 through February 2022
  • Participants will have direct access to the core developer community
  • Participants will get the opportunity to work on real projects with real impact on the Ethereum protocols

The goal of the program is to provide you with first-hand experience of how core protocol development works, and with support as you learn about the protocols that Ethereum is built upon.

The First Cohort

We kicked off the first cohort, “cohort zero” of the Core Developer Apprenticeship Program (CDAP) two months ago. Since then around 15 developers have been exploring, learning, researching, and contributing. Many of these developers came in with little to no prior knowledge about the inner workings of Ethereum. Two months later and these same developers are doing things like:

  • Working on an alternate method of documenting and specifying the Ethereum protocol.
  • Researching how we can modify or remove the SELFDESTRUCT opcode
  • Helping build ZKSync
  • Building out new peer-to-peer networks for the portal network.
  • Writing their own implementation of the EVM

With the concept validated, we are now looking to kick off the second cohort.

Doing something worthwhile

Core protocol development is easily the most impactful thing I’ve done in my professional life. I get to use my expertise and knowledge to care for and improve a multi-billion dollar protocol; a protocol that I believe will play a key role in creating a more fair and equitable future for humanity. I simply cannot say the same thing about the various “rat-race” jobs that came before. Want to join us in building a future you can get excited about?

For more information about the program, click here for details and instructions on how to apply for “cohort one”.

Solana Could Soon Witness Its Largest Consensus Change as Developer Proposes 'Alpenglow' https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-could-soon-witness-its-largest-consensus-change-as-developer-proposes-alpenglow/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-could-soon-witness-its-largest-consensus-change-as-developer-proposes-alpenglow/#respond Wed, 21 May 2025 08:23:46 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/solana-could-soon-witness-its-largest-consensus-change-as-developer-proposes-alpenglow/

Solana developers are planning what could be the blockchain’s most ambitious core upgrade to date — one that replaces its current technology stack with a redesigned consensus protocol built for near-instant finality and responsiveness.

The new system, called Alpenglow, was unveiled on Monday by infrastructure firm Anza, a Solana Labs spinout.

It proposes replacing Proof of History — Solana’s famously unique “pre-recorded clock” system — and Tower BFT, its existing voting mechanism for reaching consensus.

BFT, or Byzantine Fault Tolerance, is a way for a group of network nodes to agree on a piece of information even if some were lying or broken.

Proof of History is one of Solana’s core features, a type of cryptographic “clock” so validators don’t have to argue over timing when recording data to the network — a shortcut that immensely speeds the network but adds complexity.

Why shift?

So why the proposed shift? Because both systems are relatively slow and complex under the hood. TowerBFT needs multiple rounds of voting, and Proof of History relies on a cryptographic clock that can cause coordination delays. Alpenglow simplifies this with faster, more direct communication and quicker consensus.

In their place comes a two-part solution:

1) Votor, which handles block finalization and can confirm transactions in as little as 100–150 milliseconds (based on current simulations).

2) Rotor, a data relay protocol that aims to transmit transaction data faster and more efficiently than Turbine, Solana’s current broadcast mechanism.

This isn’t just a tech flex, it directly impacts developer experience, user responsiveness, and the types of apps that can run natively on Solana, including real-time finance, gaming, and social tools.

These implementations could, in turn, increase on-chain activity, and by extension, SOL token demand.

Finality in under a second would mark a step-change for Layer 1 blockchains, most of which still operate on multi-second confirmation windows. Solana has already experimented with “optimistic confirmations” to reduce latency, but Alpenglow formalizes this into a provably fast protocol.

Finality means a transaction is fully confirmed and can’t be changed or reversed, making it a permanent part of the blockchain.

Per its whitepaper, Alpenglow’s Votor system could finalize blocks in a single voting round if 80% of the stake is online, or two rounds if only 60% is responsive, with both modes running concurrently to finalize on the faster path.

On the other hand, using Rotor would allow fewer “hops,” smarter relay node selection, and better bandwidth distribution to push data around the network quickly — critical for keeping block times fast without relying on a central bottleneck.

A hop is one step a piece of data takes as it moves from one computer (or node) to another across a network.

As of Tuesday, no launch date has been confirmed. But for Solana, this is more than just an upgrade — it’s a bet on speed as the chain’s identity. If it works, it could re-assert Solana’s position not just as the fastest L1, but as one of the only ones fast enough for real-time use cases.
