We are excited to announce the Devconnect Scholars Program, as part of Devconnect ARG 2025! The Scholars Program will welcome 100 leaders who are expanding Ethereum’s reach by connecting it to new communities, industries, and ideas. Scholars will co-learn and co-create, building bridges between Ethereum and other worlds. The 2025 cohort will include five categories: (1) Ethereum Community Organizers, (2) Legal & Public Sector Professionals, (3) Journalists, (4) Artists, and (5) Developers & Other Builders of any kind.

Applications are now open, until Monday, June 30th!

How the Scholars Program Works

The Program will begin in late August with online programming and conclude after Devconnect in late November. During the program scholars can expect:

(1) Financial support: Based on individual needs, Scholars are provided financial support for accommodation, flight, visa application, per diem, and/or ticket to Devconnect. (Note: Financial need doesn’t influence acceptance. Those who don’t require financial support also qualify.)

(2) Pre-Devconnect community & programming: The Scholars Program emphasizes building lasting relationships, mentorship, and a space for furthering existing skills and knowledge. There will be online sessions where Scholars meet each other, learn together, co-create, and prepare for their experience at Devconnect.

(3) Devconnect week: Spending an amazing Devconnect week in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

(4) Post-Devconnect: After the event, each Scholar will create a Learning Artifact – a free-format creation that expresses their learning and experience in the medium of their choice.

Who should apply?

To be eligible for the Devconnect Scholars Program, applicants must:

(1) Have never attended Devcon before,

(2) Have never attended Devconnect before, and

(3) Be able and willing to dedicate approximately three hours per week over the course of three months to attend online sessions, complete assignments, and actively engage in learning, collaboration, and shared creation

We’re selecting 100 Scholars across five categories, and candidates may apply to one or more categories:

Category Description Who should apply
Ethereum community organizers This category will bring together a diverse group of existing and potential future Ethereum contributors. (1) Ethereum community leaders and core contributors: This track focuses on people who are contributing to regional grassroots Ethereum communities

(2) Community leaders in adjacent fields: Including cryptography, open source, broader developer communities, etc.
Legal professionals & public sector professionals This category is designed to cultivate a new generation of legal professionals who are aligned with the values of the Ethereum ecosystem and who understand the importance of open source work for the betterment of the Ethereum public commons. The program offers community engagement, specialised legal sessions, and mentorship from the Ethereum Foundation’s legal team. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the technologies and law surrounding Ethereum and will be empowered to contribute meaningfully to its ecosystem. (1) Lawyers or policymakers with legal backgrounds interested in crypto

(2) In-house counsel in crypto or crypto-adjacent companies

Artists This cohort brings together artists working across disciplines to explore Ethereum’s culture, values, and the Infinite Garden philosophy through their creative work. Through learning sessions, studio practice, critique, and play, participants will engage deeply and expand this vision of the Infinite Garden—where growth emerges from openness and connection—the soul of the Ethereum. This is like an art school that pushes new perspectives through learnings and experimentations. The cohort will culminate in an exhibition and the beginning of an ongoing alumni community. Artists of any medium, including writers, musicians, performers, poets, and more who have a unique voice and believe in a future where technology and humanity mutually inspire one another
Developers & Other Builders of Any Kind This category is looking for a diverse, curious, and passionate group of individuals from all backgrounds; whether you’re a developer, researcher, scientist, writer, educator, creative, entrepreneur, or non-profit leader. Devconnect: 18-25 April 2022 in Amsterdam https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-18-25-april-2022-in-amsterdam/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-18-25-april-2022-in-amsterdam/#respond Wed, 21 May 2025 10:23:00 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-18-25-april-2022-in-amsterdam/

In our last post, we outlined Devconnect as a week-long gathering that will feature independent Ethereum events, which aim to bring the Ethereum community together in smaller groups to talk, learn about, or make serious progress on specific subjects. Learn more at Devconnect.org

Announcing Devconnect Dates

Save the date: Devconnect is scheduled to take place in Amsterdam between April 18-25 2022.

While we continue to closely monitor evolving COVID-measures in Amsterdam, things are progressing in the right direction, and we’re organizing quickly. With that, we wanted to share a lot more about what you’ll find in Amsterdam.

By (and for) everyone: Devconnect’s Evolving Schedule

Let’s talk about content. Each event during Devconnect week will be independently hosted and curated by experts in different domains, as innovators look to continue to improve Ethereum.

Keep in mind that we want Devconnect to be productive, which means smaller audiences for some events, as relevant experts in these specific domains get to work. Most of these pieces, including ticketing, are up to the organizers of each session (not the Devconnect team). And we’ll keep our schedule updated over at Devconnect.org so that you can see further additions as they come together.

Oh(!), and there will be space for everyone to collaborate, more on that in a moment!

Which types of summits are on the calendar as of now? Here are just a few — check out the Devconnect schedule for the full list!

Devconnect is back! See you this year in Istanbul. https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-is-back-see-you-this-year-in-istanbul/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-is-back-see-you-this-year-in-istanbul/#respond Tue, 01 Apr 2025 23:03:19 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-is-back-see-you-this-year-in-istanbul/

Dear Ethereum community, builders, and researchers,

At the first-ever Devconnect last year in Amsterdam in 2022, we came together for a week of in-depth workshops and discussions. Many that participated in the sessions and conversations told us they felt Devconnect had a significant impact on the ecosystem by driving progress in tangible ways.

Many expressed their wishes for Devconnect to happen again, and after we saw the impact, we strongly agreed. Today, we can finally share that Devconnect is coming back and is planned for November 13-19 this year in Istanbul! 🇹🇷

What is Devconnect?

Devconnect is a week-long gathering that features independent Ethereum events, each with a unique focus. The goal is to focus on in-depth sessions on specific topics and to bring the Ethereum community together in smaller groups to talk, learn about, and make serious progress in specific subjects. Events during Devconnect will be independent and hosted by experts in those domains — which could be you! Our team will help foster coordination so that hosts have logistical help, and assurance that there’s minimal overlap of similar domains to avoid pulling participants in different directions. Throughout the week we will also maintain a coworking space for collaboration for all who are interested.

Most events will target an audience of experts or enthusiasts in the specific domain of the event to enable thorough understanding and discussions. Unlike a usual conference, we want this week-long gathering to facilitate the deep discussions and conversations that are needed to continue to improve Ethereum.

Devconnect is a natural candidate to apply subtraction, and we’re looking forward to seeing the events, impact, and progress the community can create during this week. If you’d like to host an event, stay tuned for more resources and information.

Additionally, we would also like to emphasize that Devconnect ≠ Devcon, which will remain our principal event, and we’re excited to bring Devcon 7 to Southeast Asia in 2024.

Why Istanbul 🇹🇷

Over the past months, we saw one community of developers and students stand out: the Turkish Ethereum community has worked hard to promote Istanbul. Nonetheless, we thoroughly evaluated many options for the location of Devconnect 2023, visited several potential locations, toured venues, and checked for availability. We considered many options and evaluated each location before making our final decision.

We are excited to bring Devconnect to Istanbul, the vibrant metropolis of Türkiye, where two continents meet, and we look forward to hosting an incredible event for the global Ethereum developer community.

But while we want this to be a joyful message, we also recognize and have had on our minds the devastating earthquakes that so heavily impacted southeast Turkey and northwest Syria, and affected the lives of millions. Our hearts go out to all who lost loved ones or their homes.

The region will need support for a long time, and if you like to contribute to the donations, here is a list that some members of the community have put together. We hope the decision to bring Devconnect to Istanbul can show our support, and encourage others to support this region in different ways.

We understand that concerns about earthquake safety might be on your mind. While Istanbul was not physically impacted by the recent earthquake, we will keep monitoring the situation closely. We hope to meet you soon and together, let us create something meaningful and special in Istanbul during Devconnect this November.

In choosing Istanbul as the host city for Devconnect 2023, we aim to capitalize on its unique position as a bridge between East and West. Accessibility is a key priority, and obtaining visas for attendees from most countries will be relatively easy. Istanbul, being one of the world’s leading tourist hubs, is well-equipped with a major international airport to welcome visitors from around the globe. Istanbul’s efficient local metro, and abundance of suitable venues for community events make it the perfect location for Devconnect 2023.

The engaged local community and numerous student blockchain clubs in the region further strengthen our belief in the potential of this vibrant city. We are confident that Istanbul’s unique blend of history, culture, and modernity will provide an inspiring backdrop for the global Ethereum developer community to come together, collaborate with these passionate groups, and drive innovation for Ethereum.

TL;DR

Mark your calendars: Devconnect IST, November 13-19, 2023.

More updates, details, and a schedule of events coming soon on our website and on Twitter! In the meantime, see you at one of the many other community events happening this year.

The Devconnect Scholars Program will provide talented and values-aligned individuals from communities currently geographically and demographically underrepresented in Ethereum with financial support to attend Devconnect in Istanbul this November.

Apply to the program here by July 23rd, 2023.

Why The Program Exists & Program Details

For Ethereum to be a resilient and thriving protocol for human coordination – in the long term and for all humans – we believe there is a need for more diverse perspectives representing various geographies and demographics.

Scholars are expected to bring their unique viewpoints and experiences to conversations at Devconnect that help shape Ethereum’s future. After Devconnect, they will apply their learnings to their respective communities to push Ethereum’s boundaries.

Program Details

Devconnect Scholars will receive financial support for transportation, accommodation, per diem, and visa application. Additionally, there will be online and in-person meetings for Scholars to get to know each other, learn, and prepare for the best experience in Istanbul.

Selection Criteria

  • We are looking for individuals with experience and/or knowledge in protocol development, web3 development, privacy, security, cryptoeconomics, UX, and governance.
  • Applicants must be a member of a community that is currently underrepresented in Ethereum. We define underrepresented communities in two main categories:

    • Geographic: Applicants from countries that lack representation in Ethereum as well as applicants from Turkey and neighboring countries.
    • Demographic: Applicants that represent a minority gender, ethnicity, or other demographic identity that is currently underrepresented in Ethereum.

  • Individuals who are unable to attend Devconnect without financial support are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be able to attend Devconnect from November 13-19, 2023.
  • Applicants must be able to communicate in English.
  • The program requires a time commitment of approximately two hours per week from September to November 2023.

Devconnect Istanbul 2023 – A celebration of progress and the Ethereum community https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-istanbul-2023-a-celebration-of-progress-and-the-ethereum-community/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-istanbul-2023-a-celebration-of-progress-and-the-ethereum-community/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2025 08:58:30 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-istanbul-2023-a-celebration-of-progress-and-the-ethereum-community/

Devconnect, the week-long gathering of the Ethereum ecosystem and community, concluded its second edition in Istanbul. The week saw over 3,500 participants from diverse backgrounds come together from November 13-19 at the Devconnect Cowork in the Istanbul Congress Center, and many more join the 70+ deep-dive events organized by independent teams in the Ethereum community. Events took place at various locations across the city and beyond, celebrating the breadth and depth of the Ethereum ecosystem.

Thank you to everyone who was part of Devconnect! We are so happy that everyone that was able to join us for an intense week, brimming with conversations, talks, workshops, and real-life connections. A massive shoutout is owed to all the independent organizers, volunteers, and to all the attendees who participated, discussed, and contributed.

A week of learning, sharing, and progress

At the heart of Devconnect was its focus on progress for the Ethereum ecosystem. As a gathering built by and for the community, many teams in the ecosystem organized independent events focused on their respective Ethereum expertise. Key topics ranged from Layer-2 scaling solutions and programmable cryptography to real-world applications, showcasing the versatility within the Ethereum ecosystem and community. One notable technology used for Devconnect ticketing was Zupass – an open-source tool built by developers from the Devconnect and Zuzalu communities. Zupass enables the creation of ZK proofs to, for example, verify event attendance.

Devconnect IST brought together our global community in one place, sparking real-life connections that are so important for our decentralized ecosystem. The Cowork attendees’ backgrounds were varied, including developers (33.7%), founders (19.4%), researchers (11.6%), marketers (5.8%), designers (2.4%), and more. This mix of backgrounds and expertise fostered a unique environment for collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Local impact and global connections

A unique aspect of this year’s Devconnect was the remarkable involvement of the local Turkish Ethereum community. A plurality of all Devconnect Cowork attendees were locals from Türkiye, making them the largest group with 17.5% of the total attendees. Events like ETHGünü and notDEVCON by ITU Blockchain, the biggest blockchain club in Istanbul, emphasized the significance of local communities and sparked connections between local and global communities.

Looking Forward

As we reflect on the success of Devconnect IST 2023, it’s clear that this event is part of a larger evolving trend within our decentralized ecosystem. Devconnect’s unique format, similar to the format of Zuzalu and Zuconnect (which took place just before Devconnect in Istanbul), represents a new paradigm of our decentralized ecosystem – coming together for a week or longer, working collaboratively on the challenges we face, and making tangible progress.

Join us next year

We are excited that our next event will be Devcon 7, which will take place in Southeast Asia in November 2024. Stay up to date with the latest news on the Road to Devcon by subscribing to our newsletter.

Devconnect Scholars Program – Ethereum Stories from Istanbul and Beyond https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-scholars-program-ethereum-stories-from-istanbul-and-beyond/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-scholars-program-ethereum-stories-from-istanbul-and-beyond/#respond Fri, 07 Mar 2025 23:24:49 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/devconnect-scholars-program-ethereum-stories-from-istanbul-and-beyond/

Ethereum is growing, and diversity of human participation creates resilience throughout the ecosystem. The Devconnect Scholars Program is one small effort that aims to create resilience through community diversity. Better representation across human geography and demographics leads to diverse experiences and new perspectives that help the Ethereum protocol serve the coordination needs of all humans, not just a lucky few. Not only does better representation – leading to better geographical distribution of Ethereum nodes for example – help the security of the network, but we believe it is crucial in enriching our community and in making Ethereum stories tangible for more people.

The Scholars Program brought to Devconnect Istanbul 22 builders from communities that are currently underrepresented in Ethereum. This post highlights just a few of the Scholars and their stories.

Meet the Scholars

Meet Ovia, a blockchain researcher who studied Proof-of-Work blockchains as part of her PhD research. She is an active contributor to India’s Web3 community, in particular by giving technical workshops, and by helping to empower female and non-binary individuals at the Phoenix Guild. Ovia said she left Devconnect with ideas and potential collaborations that can contribute to her ongoing work besides having some “fan-girl” moments meeting some of her tech-heroes in real life. You can read her takeaways here: “Introduction to ZKVMs and Types of ZKVMs” and here: “Simplified moonmath behind ZKSNARKs.”

Meet Elnaz, a Java backend developer from Iran turned smart contract developer. After her centralized exchange banned her and people from certain countries, Elnaz read the Bitcoin and Ethereum whitepapers and found the decentralization innovation “mind-blowing.” Speaking about her community, where access to banking is limited and inflation is high, she said that educating people on the disadvantages of centralized networks and onboarding them to decentralized networks still needs work. You can find her reflection here: “Enabling Low-Cost, Decentralized Micropayments on Ethereum Through Layer 2 Rollups.”

Meet Alphonce, a software engineer from Kenya. He was initially drawn to crypto because of speculation, but his perspective changed when he started taking part in open-source projects in Ethereum and realized that it can be a “powerful platform for fostering financial inclusion and innovation.” He said he wants to contribute to the blockchain ecosystem in Africa by bringing back the collaborative spirit and knowledge exchange from Devconnect. Continue reading his findings here: “Reflections From DevConnect: Unveiling Opportunities for Financial Inclusivity with Ethereum.”

You can find stories, insights, and learnings from more Scholars here.

What’s next?

Together with efforts already taking place in our community for better representation, we hope that the Devcon and Devconnect Scholars help expand and enrich the Infinite Garden of Ethereum. For future Scholars Programs and more stories, follow @EFNextBillion.
