Multiplayer game Sparkball will introduce blockchain-supported features through a new integration with Somnia—a Layer 1 network built for real-time applications.

The partnership gives Opti Games, the studio behind Sparkball, access to infrastructure designed for fast transaction processing and low fees—capabilities that will now support on-chain tournament rewards, wager-based matches, and AI simulations.

The announcement comes shortly before Sparkball’s scheduled appearance at Steam Next Fest, where the public will be able to test the game from June 9 to June 16. Sparkball has already been showcased in events featuring several major esports teams and is in active development for wider release.

What is Sparkball?

Sparkball is an online multiplayer game developed by Opti Games, structured around 4v4 team matches where players control different characters in a match format that combines goal-scoring mechanics with combat-style gameplay.

The development team includes staff with prior experience at companies such as Riot Games, Blizzard, and Electronic Arts. Sparkball has gained early attention through events featuring professional esports organisations including G2, Cloud9, and Fnatic.

Whilst the game is still in development, it will be publicly available during Steam Next Fest, allowing players to try a free demo and provide feedback.

What can we expect from this partnership?

The partnership enables Sparkball to introduce several blockchain-based systems, including:

  • Wager-based match formats: Allowing players to commit digital assets before matches.
  • AI-versus-AI battles: Simulated matches that can be run and resolved autonomously on-chain.
  • Tournament rewards: Issuance and tracking of competitive results using blockchain.

Players will also be able to access a cosmetic item—a skin themed after the Somnia network—though the item does not affect gameplay. Importantly, Sparkball remains available to players who are not using blockchain wallets or infrastructure.

Opti Games has not yet confirmed when Sparkball will exit its current testing phase or whether blockchain features will be mandatory in future builds. For now, the integration is being tested alongside traditional gameplay modes as part of the game’s gradual rollout.

Hackers target Steam users with fake game demo, for the second time in a month https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hackers-target-steam-users-with-fake-game-demo-for-the-second-time-in-a-month/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hackers-target-steam-users-with-fake-game-demo-for-the-second-time-in-a-month/#respond Wed, 19 Mar 2025 12:10:47 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/hackers-target-steam-users-with-fake-game-demo-for-the-second-time-in-a-month/

PSA: With over 40 million users, Steam is likely an attractive target for hackers, but very few cases of malware have occurred on the storefront over its two-decade history. Although a recent incident isn’t as severe as last month’s, it suggests that scammers are stepping up their efforts to bypass Valve’s security measures.

Users who downloaded a demo for the game Sniper: Phantom’s Resolution should immediately delete all associated files and change their passwords. The game was removed from Valve’s platform after users discovered its store page linked to an info-stealer.

Despite Steam’s relatively lenient content policies, users have rarely suspected the client itself of distributing malware. The fraudulent free-to-play game PirateFi, discovered last month, was possibly the first well-known case of its kind since Steam’s debut as the installer for Half-Life 2 in 2004. The latest example attempted to evade Valve’s security by hosting a free demo on a separate website.

Although it isn’t unheard of for Steam games to host downloads outside the client, users should take extreme caution when clicking links leading to external websites. Valve’s warnings regarding outward links may seem annoying, but they’re there for a reason.

Redditor “Feral_Wasp” first reported Phantom’s Resolution after noticing multiple red flags. Aside from the external free demo and generic production art, they had first heard about the game through an unsolicited direct message on Discord – an approach commonly used by scammers.

Further investigation revealed that the developer’s website was registered earlier this month, and the images associated with their accounts might have been stolen. They may also be linked to a crypto enterprise and appear to be promoting the game via Telegram, the same messaging service used in the PirateFi scam.

After testing the “demo” in a virtual machine, another user discovered files designed to evade Windows Defender, mimic the Unity engine, escalate privileges, and run Fiddler – a known network traffic interceptor. VirusTotal struggles to detect the malware, suggesting it is either new or custom-built. Windows Defender, however, flags it as a trojan.

Although the Steam page’s external link directed users to an independent website presumably run by the developer, the malicious payload actually originated from the group’s GitHub repository. Unlike the PirateFi incident, Valve has not yet issued warning emails to affected users. However, Steam has marked the game as unavailable, and GitHub appears to have taken down the developer’s page after users reported it.

Half-Life 2 RTX demo arrives March 18, RTX Remix modding suite leaves beta https://earlybirdsinvest.com/half-life-2-rtx-demo-arrives-march-18-rtx-remix-modding-suite-leaves-beta/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/half-life-2-rtx-demo-arrives-march-18-rtx-remix-modding-suite-leaves-beta/#respond Fri, 14 Mar 2025 03:23:41 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/half-life-2-rtx-demo-arrives-march-18-rtx-remix-modding-suite-leaves-beta/

Something to look forward to: Nvidia has spent years showcasing how its ray tracing technology can enhance classic games like Quake 2 and Portal. As development continues on a fan-made Half-Life 2 remaster, the company has released a free demo along with its ray-traced modding toolkit to highlight DLSS 4 and other new features.

Nvidia’s complete RTX Remix modding suite is now available through the Nvidia app and website. To demonstrate the technology, a free demo of the upcoming fully path-traced version of Half-Life 2 will launch on March 18.

Nvidia’s RTX Remix allows modders to add ray tracing, DLSS, new art assets, and other advanced features to PC games that utilize DirectX 8 and 9. The GPU giant previously used the toolset to create an ambitious remaster of Portal. Meanwhile, independent tinkerers have used early versions of the company’s code on early 2000s classics like Max Payne, Dark Messiah: Might and Magic, SWAT 4, and Need for Speed Underground 2.

A drag-and-drop interface makes it easy for users to add physical properties to old textures so they respond to new ray-traced lighting correctly. Modders can also create new textures or use machine learning to upscale the originals. The tool replaces a game’s original renderer with Vulkan to facilitate the insertion of new assets in real-time.

The full release adds new features to simplify modding and showcase Nvidia’s latest neural rendering techniques. The transformer ray reconstruction model for DLSS 4 and multi-frame generation are key highlights, but the Half-Life 2 RTX demo will also introduce additional tools.

Previous versions of RTX Remix enabled replacing textures and lights, but modders can now swap upgraded character models and quickly match them to their original animations. For example, characters in Half-Life 2 RTX will feature 30 times as many polygons as the original.

A new tool called RTX Skin combines ray tracing and subsurface scattering, allowing ray-traced light to penetrate semi-transparent materials like skin, wax, marble, or jade. Neural Radiance Cache trains a neural network on gameplay content to enhance indirect lighting detail while improving performance by up to 15 percent. The new RTX IO feature dynamically manages texture settings to maintain maximum texture detail without exceeding the GPU’s VRAM limit. Additionally, RTX volumetrics uses ray tracing to enhance fog and god rays more efficiently than traditional rasterization.

Clearly, Nvidia has packed a lot of power into this toolkit. The Half-Life 2 RTX demo should thoroughly showcase RTX Remix’s abilities in the Ravenholm and Nova Prospect chapters. The completed HL2 conversion still needs work and has no launch date yet. However, it will be free to Half-Life 2 owners upon its eventual release.
