BiT Global, a crypto custody firm tied to entrepreneur Justin Sun, has voluntarily dismissed its lawsuit against Coinbase over the delisting of Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC).

The move ends a months-long legal dispute that spotlighted growing tensions between centralized exchanges and token custodians as control over key infrastructure becomes increasingly contested.

Filed on June 6 in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, the joint stipulation of dismissal closes the case with prejudice, which prevents it from being refiled.

Both parties agreed to cover their own legal fees and did not disclose settlement terms, if any.

Dispute over custody shift

BiT Global initially filed suit in December, weeks after Coinbase announced that WBTC would be delisted from its platform. The exchange said the token no longer met its listing standards, citing governance and risk concerns.

Days earlier, BitGo, the primary custodian for WBTC, had revealed a new partnership with BiT Global to diversify the token’s Bitcoin reserve holdings outside the US.

BiT Global was set to serve as a co-custodian, with reserves partially relocated to Hong Kong. The move sparked criticism in the crypto industry due to BiT Global’s known ties to Sun, who was facing regulatory probes in the US at the time.

Coinbase argued that allowing WBTC to fall under Sun-affiliated control posed an “unacceptable risk” to user security and market integrity.

BiT Global, in turn, alleged that Coinbase’s rationale masked a conflict of interest. The lawsuit accused the exchange of using the delisting to undermine a competing product, WBTC, in favor of its own wrapped Bitcoin token, cbBTC, which Coinbase launched shortly afterward.

The firm described the delisting as a “cash grab” designed to boost cbBTC’s market share by sidelining its main rival.

Legal setback preceded withdrawal

The case suffered a major blow in March when Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguín denied BiT Global’s motion for a preliminary injunction, ruling that the firm had not demonstrated imminent harm from the delisting.

By May, during a hearing, the judge signaled that she was inclined to grant Coinbase’s motion to dismiss the case entirely, citing a lack of legal grounds to proceed.

With the court leaning heavily in Coinbase’s favor, BiT Global opted to drop the case before a formal ruling was issued. The company has not provided a public explanation for the withdrawal and did not respond to media inquiries.

Coinbase, for its part, reaffirmed its stance following the dismissal. The exchange’s Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal said in a social media post on June 9:

“We have zero plans to relist WBTC.”

The case highlighted how custody decisions and token listing policies are becoming flashpoints in an industry still lacking unified regulatory oversight. While WBTC remains the dominant wrapped Bitcoin token by market cap, Coinbase’s cbBTC has grown rapidly in adoption since its launch.

Coinbase, BiT Global End Legal Fight Over WBTC Delisting https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-bit-global-end-legal-fight-over-wbtc-delisting/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-bit-global-end-legal-fight-over-wbtc-delisting/#respond Sun, 08 Jun 2025 03:32:02 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/coinbase-bit-global-end-legal-fight-over-wbtc-delisting/

BiT Global has ended its dispute over the delisting of BiT Global’s wrapped bitcoin (wBTC) token on Coinbase.

According to a joint court filing, BiT Global has agreed to dismiss its lawsuit against the crypto exchange with prejudice, meaning the case cannot be brought again in the future. The filing notes that both companies will cover their own legal expenses.

BiT Global had filed the lawsuit last year in the Northern District of California after Coinbase delisted the token over what it said was “unacceptable risk” that the tokenized BTC would “fall into the hands of Justin Sun.”

Sun became affiliated with wBTC in August last year through a partnership, prompting Coinbase to question BiT Global about his role. Sun, a Chinese-born crypto billionaire, has nevertheless been supporting the token, with World Liberty Financial dropping its cbBTC for wBTC after he joined as an advisor.

The suit alleged the exchange’s decision was unjustified and harmed the token’s liquidity and reputation while favoring Coinbase’s competing asset cbBTC. Coinbase launched cbBTC just two months before announcing it was delisting wBTC.

The dismissal does not disclose any terms beyond the cost arrangement.

UPDATE (June 7, 2025, 22:30 UTC): Clarifies the filing was not a settlement.

BSV Investors Seek to Revive 2019 Lawsuit Against Binance Over Delisting Impact https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bsv-investors-seek-to-revive-2019-lawsuit-against-binance-over-delisting-impact/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bsv-investors-seek-to-revive-2019-lawsuit-against-binance-over-delisting-impact/#respond Sun, 11 May 2025 23:13:22 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/bsv-investors-seek-to-revive-2019-lawsuit-against-binance-over-delisting-impact/

Investors in Bitcoin Satoshi’s Vision (BSV) are making a renewed push to revive a 2019 lawsuit against crypto exchange Binance, alleging the platform’s decision to delist the token severely impacted its long-term value.

BSV, which currently trades around $42, is a hard fork of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), which itself forked from the original Bitcoin (BTC) network.

According to Law360, the plaintiffs are asking for the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal to revisit a July 2024 ruling that dismissed their “loss of chance” claim.

BSV Backers Blame Binance Delisting for Altcoin’s Decline

They argue that Binance’s decision to delist BSV, along with similar actions by other major exchanges, effectively suppressed the altcoin’s market potential.

The original claim sought $9 billion in damages, but the investors now say they could pursue up to £10 billion (approximately $13 billion) if the case moves forward.

The legal team contends that BSV never recovered from the delistings and continues to underperform due to lack of visibility and trading access.

Despite a 15% price bump following news of the revived legal effort, BSV remains in a persistent downtrend and has failed to gain meaningful market share or network power relative to Bitcoin.

Binance removed BSV in April 2019, citing concerns over its listing standards.

The move followed repeated claims by BSV’s creator, Craig Wright, who has long asserted—without proof—that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s pseudonymous founder.

Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao had publicly warned that Wright’s behavior could result in delisting.

Since then, BSV has also been the target of several 51% attacks, undermining trust in its blockchain’s security and stability.

These setbacks have only deepened skepticism about the project’s viability, even as its backers press ahead with legal action.

CZ Confirms Pardon Request After Initial Denial

Last week, CZ confirmed that he has formally applied for a presidential pardon, weeks after initially denying reports of such a move.

Speaking on the Farokh Radio podcast aired May 6, Zhao said his legal team filed the request following widespread media speculation.

“I got lawyers applying,” Zhao said during the interview, saying that he ultimately decided to move forward after stories from Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal suggested he was pursuing a pardon from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“If they’re writing this article, I may as well just officially apply,” Zhao added.

The former crypto mogul pleaded guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act in November 2023 as part of a settlement with U.S. authorities.

The agreement led to Binance paying $4.3 billion in fines, with Zhao personally contributing $50 million.

He was sentenced to four months in prison and barred from holding any management position at Binance as a condition of the deal.

Zhao has since shifted focus to international advisory work, offering guidance to governments in Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan on crypto regulation and blockchain integration.

OFAC keeps developers in the crosshairs despite Tornado Cash delisting https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ofac-keeps-developers-in-the-crosshairs-despite-tornado-cash-delisting/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ofac-keeps-developers-in-the-crosshairs-despite-tornado-cash-delisting/#respond Wed, 16 Apr 2025 00:29:28 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/ofac-keeps-developers-in-the-crosshairs-despite-tornado-cash-delisting/

Developers and operators of decentralized privacy protocols remain exposed to potential US sanctions enforcement despite the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) removing Tornado Cash smart contracts from its sanctions in March.

According to an April 15 report published by the DeFi Education Fund, while the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Tornado Cash’s immutable smart contracts do not constitute property under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the Treasury continues to assert broad discretion over mutable protocols and developers associated with them.

The Treasury’s response to the Van Loon v. Department of Treasury ruling suggests that it does not view the court’s decision as limiting its authority to sanction decentralized technologies.

In its March filing, the agency argued that the Fifth Circuit’s judgment applied only to immutable smart contracts, leaving the possibility of future designations for mutable components or protocol developers.

Although OFAC subsequently removed Tornado Cash’s smart contracts from its Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list, it framed the move as a discretionary action rather than compliance with the court order. Currently, the ability to reimpose sanctions if conditions change is preserved.

Continued enforcement

According to the report, OFAC’s decision to retain sanctions on Roman Semenov, a Tornado Cash co-founder, highlights the Treasury’s broader enforcement strategy. While Semenov was removed from the Cyber-Related sanctions list, he remains designated under the North Korean Sanctions Program.

The agency claims that by helping develop a decentralized protocol used by North Korean-linked hackers, Semenov “materially assisted” the government of North Korea, even though it alleged no direct or intentional contact.

This interpretation extends liability to software developers based solely on the downstream use of their code by sanctioned parties.

The Department of Justice has also cited these designations in its criminal indictments of Semenov and fellow developer Roman Storm, raising additional questions about the legal boundaries for creating open-source privacy tools.

The Treasury has not provided detailed guidance on evaluating potential liability for those indirectly connected to sanctioned behavior.

The agency’s approach signals that developers of DeFi protocols and privacy applications may continue to face legal exposure if designated entities later use their tools. This includes potential scrutiny over token listings, protocol integrations, or user interactions that could be construed as indirect support under North Korea-related sanctions.

Unclear standards

According to the report, the Tornado Cash case has also shed light on the opacity of OFAC’s designation standards.

Under Executive Orders 13694 and 13722, which cover cyber-enabled threats and North Korea sanctions, the Treasury maintains expansive authority to designate persons or entities that support cybercrime or the North Korean regime. However, applying these frameworks to decentralized software and anonymous users has introduced legal ambiguity.

Cyber-related sanctions are broadly defined and can include any activity perceived as threatening to US national security. In contrast, North Korea-related sanctions require attribution but cover an extensive range of activities.

OFAC has not specified how it differentiates between these frameworks in practice or what technical thresholds must be met to constitute “support.” As a result, legal exposure for mixers and developers remains challenging to predict.

The decision to delist Tornado Cash’s smart contracts without acknowledging fault or affirming limits on regulatory authority reflects the Treasury’s preference to avoid setting a judicial precedent.

Rather than accept a broad ruling from the Fifth Circuit, the agency asked the District Court to issue a narrow judgment confined to immutable smart contracts. Then, it argued that its discretionary delisting rendered the case moot.

Court judgment still pending

Although OFAC has argued that its delisting resolved the matter, the US District Court is still responsible for issuing a final ruling. A full vacatur of the original designation could limit the agency’s authority to sanction other smart contracts or DeFi protocols in similar cases.

Conversely, if the court accepts the Treasury’s narrow interpretation, the ruling could establish a precedent that would allow OFAC to reassert sanctions under different rationales.

In the interim, privacy tool developers and decentralized protocol contributors operate in a regulatory gray zone, where the risk of being designated or criminally charged may depend more on their software’s perceived uses than on any demonstrable intent.

While delisting Tornado Cash’s contracts temporarily relieved the DeFi community, the government’s stance on enforcement suggests that sanctions-related exposure persists well beyond this single case.

Binance's Potential Zcash Delisting Met With Dismay From Industry Heavyweights https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binances-potential-zcash-delisting-met-with-dismay-from-industry-heavyweights/ https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binances-potential-zcash-delisting-met-with-dismay-from-industry-heavyweights/#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2025 15:44:37 +0000 https://earlybirdsinvest.com/binances-potential-zcash-delisting-met-with-dismay-from-industry-heavyweights/

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has been criticized this week for including privacy token Zcash (ZEC) among those cryptos up for a vote to be delisted from the exchange.

Zcash, which has a $500 million market cap, appeared on the ballot alongside FTX’s FTT token and data security platform JASMY.

Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox tagged Binance CEO Richard Teng in a tweet on Tuesday: “You’re considering delisting Zcash!? What kind of world are you creating? Do you want your children to grow up in peace and prosperity, or a Black Mirror episode?”

Digital Currency Group founder Barry Silbert also shared several posts lamenting Binance’s decision to include Zcash on the list.

The sentiment was also echoed by Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet and Cosmos co-foudner Ethan Buchman, both of whom highlighted the importance of privacy.

From Binance’s point of view, privacy tokens have long since been a topic of discussion among financial regulators. In 2022 a leaked EU document suggested that privacy tokens could be banned across the region.

Privacy protocol Tornado Cash was also sanctioned by the U.S. amid concerns of criminality, although these sanctions were removed last month.

ZEC is currently trading at $31.26 having dropped by 3.1% over the past 24 hours.

June Report

Node Updates

Regular updates to our nodes are essential to maintain security, improve efficiency, and incorporate the latest improvements from each cryptocurrency’s development team. These updates help ensure that our mining operations run smoothly and that our miners enjoy the best possible performance and reliability.

Zcash ZEC 5.9.1

This version of Zcash introduces significant security and usability enhancements. The addition of the z_converttex RPC method allows users to convert transparent p2pkh addresses to the ZIP 320 (TEX) format, streamlining transactions and enhancing privacy. Additionally, this update improves network security protocols by automatically disconnecting from peers that send malformed version messages and rejecting duplicate verack messages. These changes are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the robustness of the Zcash network against potential network-level attacks.

FIRO v0.14.13.3

The latest Firo release marks a critical step forward in wallet technology and transaction handling. With enhanced support for light wallets, this update facilitates better mobile interactions by allowing light wallet servers to effectively query the node for Spark state. This means that transactions are recognized more quickly, and balances are more accurately reported, improving the overall user experience. Additionally, the increase in the maximum transaction relay size from 100 kB to 250 kB is a response to community needs for higher transaction throughput, particularly for UTXO consolidation and Spark minting operations.

September 2Miners

FIRO Delisting

As of September 13, 2024, at 10:00 UTC, FIRO was officially delisted from our mining pool. This decision followed the FIRO project’s announcement to significantly reduce mining rewards by five times at block 958655, which occurred around September 16, 2024. The new reward distribution heavily favored Masternodes and markedly decreased miners’ shares, which did not align with our values of supporting the miner community. Consequently, we discontinued support for FIRO.

Firo Delisting
