Chart Decoder Series: Average True Range – Volatility Tools to Help You Select Your Target and Get Profit

Welcome to Chart decoder seriesconvert professional trading tools into strategies you can use today.

So far, we’ve been working on:

Today we explore ATR (average true range). This is an indicator that solves one of the biggest puzzles in a transaction. What risk is there and where should the stops be placed?

What ATR really says to you

The ATR was developed by J. Welles Wilder Jr. in 1978 as part of a groundbreaking work on technical analysis. Unlike most metrics focusing on price direction, ATR measures only one thing. It’s volatility.

The ATR answers an important question: “How long does this market normally move?”

Calculation: The ATR examines the “true range” of each period. This is the largest.

  1. Current high – Low current
  2. |Current High – Previous Closed|
  3. |Current Low – Previous Closed|

Next, move the average of these true range values over the selected period (14 is the standard for Bitfinex, but you can adjust it to any time you like)

Absolute values ensure that the ATR always shows a positive number, regardless of whether the gap is up or down.

Why is ATR important:

ATR is beyond context. It forms the way traders manage risk, size locations and set exits. Rather than relying solely on intestinal sensation, it provides an objective measure of market behavior that directly informs all transactional decisions.

1. Smarter stop loss

Placement of stops without an ATR is basically guesswork. The ATR indicates what is considered “normal” movement and cannot be thrown away in your daily swing.

  • Scalping Stop (0.5 x ATR): Used by high frequency traders who want a quick ex with the first sign of trouble. Effective only during low volatility periods where market movements are predictable
  • Standard stop (1 x ATR): Provides ample space for normal price fluctuations while maintaining reasonable risk management
  • Stop position (2xATR): For traders who hold a position for several days that needs to survive the normal daily volatility cycle without a premature exit

2. Size your position appropriately

Professional risk management is the maintenance of consistent risk exposure regardless of market conditions. Instead of trading the same size in all conditions, adapt smaller positions when the volatility is high, and adapt larger positions when it’s mild.

3. Volatility breakout spots

Breakouts with expanded ATRs demonstrate institutional participation and true directional beliefs. If price breaks a critical level but the ATR remains flat, it often indicates weak follow-through and a high probability of inversion. The most powerful setup occurs when the price breaks a critical level with an ATR expansion, checking both direction and momentum.

4. Set profit targets

ATR multiple provides a reasonable framework for setting realistic profit targets and helps you move away from guessing towards consistency.

  • Conservatives: 1.5 x ATR
  • Standard: 2 x ATR
  • Aggressive: 3xATR

Actual example: BTC/USD analysis

price: $110,500
ATR (14): 3,033

This tells us:

Bitcoin’s recent average daily exercise is about $3,033. This gives traders a clear context.

  • The $3,000 move is no exception. Matches 1xATR
  • Approx. 3,000 (1 x ATR) stops losses about normal breathing patio
  • A profit target of $4,500-6,000 (1.5-2xATR) is realistic for swing trading
  • ATR at this level shows a moderately volatile market that requires careful position sizing and risk management.

ATR + Other Indicators:

When combined with other tools, the ATR becomes even more powerful.

ATR + Bollinger Band: This move is more certain when you hit the extreme Bollinger band with a high-priced ATR. A low ATR in the band may suggest that extremes are not retained.

ATR + RSI: Excessive conditions for RSI with elevated ATR often mark important bases. High volatility shows true sales pressure, and it sells too much and makes the reading more meaningful.

ATR + MACD: MACD crossovers with an ATR expansion are more reliable than those contracted by ATR. Volatility confirms that there is a conviction for a change in momentum.

ATR + Volume + obv: Triple combination: obv points to the direction of smart marten, volume points to immediate conviction, and ATR shows how much to expect. If there is all alignment, there is a high paraability setup.

Bonus Read: ATR + RSI Behavior

price: $110,600
ATR (14): 3,033
RSI (14): 39.12 (nearly excessive)

This tells us:

  • The RSI of 39 is below neutral (50), but has surpassed the 30 overselling threshold, still showing bearish momentum rather than extreme.
  • ATR of 3,033 indicates an increase in daily volatility. This means that the swing is big.

For traders:

  • Bearish rsi + high atr = Sales pressure is active and backed by volatility.
  • If RSI approaches 30 while the ATR is high, the market is not just going down, but is being sold by force. Overselling conditions will carry more weight.
  • If the RSI begins to climb while the ATR remains high, the bounce may have some strength behind it rather than simply a weak recovery.

ATR limitations to remember:

Delay indicator
The ATR is based on past price transfers. It tells us what volatility is, not necessarily what it is.

There is no direction bias
ATRs don’t tell you what direction the market will move. It’s just a typical amount of movement.

Smoothed data
Like all moving averages, ATRs can be slower to respond to sudden changes in volatility.

Market context is important
ATRs in trending markets behave differently than horizontal markets. Always consider the larger picture.

Pro tips for ATR:

1. Use multiple time frames

  • Daily ATR: For swing trading and position sizing
  • 4-hour ATR: For day trading setup
  • 1 hour ATR: For accurate input timing

2. Economic calendar integration

ATRs often spike major news events. Plan position sizing and stop placement accordingly.

3. Weekend benefits

Crypto Markets is open 24/7, but volatility patterns often change over the weekend. Consider individual ATR calculations for weekday and weekends.

Try it with Bitfinex:

  1. Log in to Bitfinex
  2. Choose your main trading pair
  3. Add an ATR indicator (starts with the standard 14 periods. The length can be adjusted within the ATR settings)
  4. Observe how ATR changes in different market conditions
  5. Practice using ATR for stop loss placement
  6. Note the correlation between ATR and key price movements

Chart decoder series: Volume + obv – Smart Money Tracking System

Welcome to the Chart Decoder series. Here we categorize tools that separate casual traders from the strengths of veterans.

In the final episode, I explained it.

Today we dive into volume and obv (balance-on volume). Read together, these two indicators reveal where institutional money is flowing before the crowd catches up.

What is On-Balance Volume (OBV)?

Obv is a cumulative indicator created by Joe Granville in the 1960s. It is built on one simple premise. Volume precedes price. Smart money moves first, and prices continue later.

The calculation is simple:

  • End of today > If the end of yesterday: The buyer won. Add today’s volume to obv
  • If the end of today The seller won. Subtract today’s volume from obv
  • If the end of today = the end of yesterday: It’s a draw. The obv remains the same

result? A tally of running purchases over time and pressure to sell.

Please note that OBVs only respond to closing prices. Daytime swings are irrelevant. You may see a deep red candle, but if prices rise more than the previous day, the OBV is still rising. In other words, the buyers had the final say.

How to read volume + obv:

volume It tells you how strong the movement today is.

obv Indicates whether purchasing or selling pressure is piling up over time.

Put them together, you get both short-term action and larger images.

1. Confirmed uptrends: OBV + large capacity + rising price

Everything is lined up: institutional accumulation (obv), strong participation (quantity), and upward movement (price). These are usually the most reliable trends. Momentum and smart money both support movement.

2. Accumulation zone: OBV + Low volume + Lateral price increase

Smart money accumulation stage. The institution is quietly building positions without dramatically moving prices. This often precedes a big breakout when retailers finally realize. Watch out for sudden volume spikes or price breakouts and check the movement.

3. Distribution phase: obv + large capacity drop + down price

Ongoing distribution. Smart Money is on sale (OBV) and currently has a panic sale (volume). These moves often need to go further as sales pressure is built up. If you have a long position, quickly reassess.

4. Divergent Pattern The most powerful signal occurs when the OBV and price disagree.

  • Bullish divergence: Prices appear to be weak or delayed, but they obviously rise quietly. This is a sign that a major player is purchasing it. This could be a setup for a breakout.
  • Bearish emancipation: Prices continue to climb, but OBV is slipping. This means that demand is fading downwards. Smart money may end early.

5. Breakout confirmation: OBV + Spying volume + Increased price destruction resistance

This is a dream setup. The institutions are already accumulating, retailers are jumping in, and there is real confidence in the breakout. Often this is a green light. Make sure you’re too late to chase.

Actual example: BTC/USDT analysis

  • price: $119,100
  • obv: Flat at 15,302k
  • volume: It’s low and stable

The BTC has consolidated just under $120,000 after a strong rally, but the OBV is no longer climbing. The lines are flattened and there is no offensive sales, but neither suggests that strong accumulation is ongoing. This pause in OBV could mean that Smart Money is waiting and not selling, not actively purchasing. The volume remains light, so breakouts from here require new beliefs to stick.

There is no clear divergence at the moment, but the market is stagnant. Look carefully at the obv: if it starts to rise again on a green day, it may have returned the early signalble.

Volume + obv + other indicators:

This combo works even better when combined with tools you already know.

  • Volume + obv + vwap: As OBV rises and prices approach VWAP in large numbers, they often show institutional support at fair value levels. There may be a bounce.
  • Volume + obv + rsi: Rising in RSI in excess territory often marks a significant bottom. Smart money is buying while sentiment is poor. This can be a turning point.
  • Volume + obv + magd: If obv rises and Macd is over bullish, it will strengthen the uptrend case. If the obv is falling and your Macd is bearished, the sales signal will increase the weight.
  • Volume + obv + Bollinger Band: Bollinger bands show extreme prices. The obv can tell if these extremes are supported by actual pressure.
If you hit a low price band but your OBV is rising, this can result in a quiet buildup during pullback. The possibility of rebounding could be brewing.
If the price hits the upper band but the OBV fails, this may signal distribution during the hype. Possible fixes may continue.

Bonus Lead: obv + volume + vwap – Triple Confirm Setup

  • price: $119,100
  • VWAP: 118,737
  • obv: Flat at 15,302k
  • volume: It’s low and stable

Here’s what this chart tells us:

  • The price is a little On vwapwhich suggests that BTC is slightly above fair value based on recent volumes. It’s neutral to mild bullish, but it’s not a strong signal in itself.
  • I have an obv It’s flattened It shows that cumulative purchase pressure has stagnated after a solid uptrend. Smart money may be taking a break, they don’t sell, but they don’t actively buy it either.
  • The volume remains Lighttherefore, there is no panic sales, but there is no surge in convictions from either side.

Conclusion: This is a neutral zone. Prices are stable just above VWAP, but OBV and Volume have not yet confirmed breakouts. If the obv starts to rise again with volume spikes, it could become your green light. Until then, stay patient.

Pro tips for volume + obv:

1. Use multiple time frames

  • Daily OBV: Shows long-term institutional flows
  • 4 hours obv: Suitable for swing trading setups
  • 1 hour obv: Helps with accurate input timing

2. Watch not only the obv value but also the trend changes

Don’t see if the obv is positive or negative. Beware of trends changing. To rise after a long decline is more meaningful than to flatten a few weeks.

3. Volume quality issues

Not all volumes are equal. Activities during London/New York sessions often reflect institutional participation, but weekend or early Asian volumes can be noise.

4. Combined with major price levels

OBV works best when Price is nearby Support or resistance. If OBV is rising and prices are pushing towards resistance, there could be a breakout. If the obv is falling and the price is approaching support, it can drop.

5. Bear the divergence

Differences between price and obv can last for days or weeks. Just because OBV is rising while prices remain flat (or fall) doesn’t mean there will be breakouts today or tomorrow. In many cases, major players slowly and quietly build positions. It may take some time for prices to catch up.

6. I know the limitations

Choppy Market: obv gives a mixed signal during extended lateral actions as money flows back and forth without a clear direction.
News Events: Major developments can distort OBV readings due to price gaps.
Do not use alone: Always combine price actions with other metrics for confirmation.

Try it with Bitfinex:

  1. Log in to Bitfinex
  2. Select the main trading pair (BTC/USD, ETH/USD works well)
  3. Add a volume histogram at the bottom
  4. Add OBV from the indicator menu
  5. Look for the patterns we discussed
  6. Practice finding divergence between price and obv

Chart Decoder Series: VWAP – Market Truth Detector

Welcome to the Chart Decoder series. Here we categorize tools that separate casual traders from professionals.

You have already mastered trend identification (SMA/EMA), momentum shift (MACD), excessive/sold out zones (RSI), extreme extreme extremes (bollinger bands), and inversion timing (probability).

Now it’s time for VWAP, an indicator that cuts Now and tells you one simple thing. Are you overpaying?

What is VWAP?

VWAP represents the volume weighted average price. It shows you the average price everyone paid today, but gives you more weight to the price where many transactions have happened.

Bitcoin spiked quickly to $110,000, but only a few people bought there, most people traded about $105,000 on a major buying and selling, while VWAP is way closer to $105,000.

The concept of calculation is simple.

  • Do all trades all day
  • Multiply the price x volume for each transaction
  • Add them all and split them by total amount

What you get is a “true” average price that reflects where most of the money actually changed hands.

How to read VWAP:

vwap above = pay more than most people. If the price exceeds VWAP, most people are paying more than what they paid today (weighted by the amount they bought). This means:

  • Many people are buying it now and are increasing the price
  • You may be purchasing when the price is temporarily high
  • Prices may return to where most people bought it

Below vwap = get better deals. If the price is below VWAP, most people get a better price than what they paid today. This often means:

  • More people sell it than they buy, pushing prices down
  • You may have gotten quite a deal compared to previous buyers
  • Prices may bounce back to where most people bought it

VWAP = Pay average. When a price is traded on VWAP, the average person pays exactly what he pays today, based on all the buy and sell that occurred.

Large traders use VWAP to benchmark trading. This is why VWAP often acts as support or resistance. Institutional algorithms are programmed to protect these levels.

Actual example: Bitfinex’s BTC/USD

  • price: $118,940
  • VWAP: $118,502

Bitcoin trades for around $438, beyond VWAP. Mild Premium region.

Transactions above VWAP typically show bullish momentum. This means that the average buyer for this session is profitable. This is a strong indicator that demand is currently outweighing supply. However, premiums are not over-excessive, suggesting that movement is still measured rather than euphoric. Several dynamics may be at work:

  • Buyers are in controlbut not aggressive. It is a sign of healthy and stable accumulation.
  • VWAP may act as dynamic support. If prices recede, the VWAP line could be around $118,502, at a level where buyers would recede.
  • There is no clear discount It exists at this point. Traders looking for bargain entries are advised to wait for a potential retest of VWAP.

in short, Bitcoin is currently in a balanced but bullish positionand traders may want to see how prices behave around VWAP and measure whether this move has more legs or is time for breath.

VWAP + Other Indicators: Power Combo

VWAP works even better when combined with other tools.

VWAP + RSI:If the price exceeds VWAP and The RSI shows what was forced to buy. This is a powerful signal you might buy at a temporary peak.

VWAP + Volume: As prices increase volume and approach VWAP, they often show significant levels. Large players may be defending or testing this “fair value” line.

VWAP + Support/Resistance: VWAP often acts as dynamic support for uptrends and resistance for downtrends. It’s like a moving floor or ceiling based on where the actual transaction took place.

Looking at the example of BTC, if the price below the VWAP is $111,080 vs. $111,321 and a strong purchase amount appears as BTC approaches VWAP from below, it could show institutional interest in defending the “fair value” line.

Bonus Read: VWAP + RSI Power Combo

  • price: $118,940
  • VWAP: $118,502
  • RSI: 66.11

This indicates that it contains bitcoin Bullish momentum However, they are approaching the territory they have acquired (RSIs above 70 are usually considered overbuying)

This setup is particularly interesting.

Although the technical indicators are clearly bullish, RSI’s proximity to acquired territory suggests that traders should pay attention to potential pullbacks or integration periods. A VWAP level of $118,502 could serve as a critical support zone if prices decide to retreat from the current level.

Overall, this combination of price action on VWAP and healthy RSI momentum creates a bullish environment for Bitcoin, but the over-conditions approaching suggest that upward movements need to be carefully monitored for signs of momentum fatigue.

Pro tips for using VWAP:

1. VWAP resets daily

Unlike moving averages, which look back on the set count period, VWAP is reset at the start of each trading day. This makes it ideal for day trading and short-term decisions.

2. Don’t fight strong VWAP trends

If prices consistently outperform VWAP with a strong volume, it is often a sign of authentic strength. The market says it is “willing to pay the premium price.”

3. VWAP Touch is golden

When prices drop and bounce to touch and VWAP, they are often a great entry point. The market is testing fair value and finding buyers.

4. Beware of VWAP breaks

If the price exceeds VWAP all day, if it suddenly breaks down with volume, it could indicate a change of emotion. The “fair value” line is violated.

5. Use multiple time frames

  • Daily VWAP: Shows Big Picture Fair Value
  • Hourly VWAP: Helps accurate entry/exit timing
  • Weekly VWAP: Provides a long-term institutional perspective

VWAP Limitations: Things you need to know

VWAP is a powerful tool, but it is important to understand its limitations.

Volume Dependencies: VWAP needs healthy trading volumes to be meaningful. In low-capacity markets or outside of business hours, true fair value may not be accurately reflected.

Keeping behind: During extreme volatility, VWAP can keep up with price movements and may provide outdated information when you need it most.

Short-term focus: VWAP is reset every day and is primarily useful for intraday trading rather than long-term investment decisions.

Not predictive: VWAP shows what happened, not what happened. Don’t assume that prices always return to VWAP. Sometimes the breakouts are genuine and lasting.

Try it with Bitfinex:

  • Log in to Bitfinex
  • Please select a chart
  • Add a VWAP from the indicator menu
  • See how prices interact with the VWAP line
  • Be aware of the relationship between volume and VWAP

Chart Decoder Series: Probabilistic Oscillator – Trader’s Radar for Reversal

Welcome to the Chart Decoder series, a guide to learning the essential tools to accurately read Bitfinex charts.

So far, I’ve learned how to spot trends (SMA/EMA), catch momentum shifts (MACD), and how to recognize excess/sold out zones (RSIs) and volatility extremes (bollinger bands).

So let’s talk about stochastic oscillators. This is an indicator of timing moments “too fast”;

What is a probabilistic oscillator?

Stochastic oscillators measure momentum by comparing the current closing price to the high and low ranges over a set period (usually 14 periods).

It consists of two rows.

  • %k (high speed line): The main line responds immediately
  • %D (slow line): Moving average %k that smooths noise

Typically, you get a reading between 0 and 100.

  • Over 80 (%k): Too much bought. The market may need a breather
  • Less than 20 (%k): Overselling. There may be a bounce
  • Between 20 and 80:neutral. Prices have moved within recent ranges

Signal Crossover

  • %k exceeds %d below 20: Bullish inverted signal
  • %k is less than %d above 80: Bearish inverted signal
  • If both lines are above 80 or below 20: It’s a strong trend, but it’s also a warning that you won’t get over the welcome. These zones often precede the shift.

Bitfinex BTC/USD example

  • price:$102,150.
  • Blue (k%):96.49
  • Orange (D%):96.47
  • There are both rows Excessive zone (Over 80). This often indicates the potential fatigue of current upward movements.

Pumps these days may be overdoing that. When a probabilistic measure makes this higher, it often shows it Buyers may be short of gasand it could be that the pullback is round the corner.

But here’s a twist. In particular, in crypto, excessive acquisitions do not mean “time to sell.” With strong trends, probabilistic momentum indicators may remain high for some time. So, you need more clues before you make a call.

What other metrics are useful?

Stochastic oscillators offer easy reading of extreme extremes, but work even better when paired with other tools.

Moving average of index (EMAS) It helps to zoom out, like 50 or 200. If the BTC is bouncing off, but still below 200 EMA, it could be a short-lived rescue rally, not a true reversal of the trend.

Macd It functions like a momentum compass. Although they say the probability theory is over-bought, if the MACD is gaining strength in the upward direction, that might mean there is room for more driving.

rsiOn the other hand, there are close probabilities. It also flags over and oversell zones, but has a smoother and slower approach. It’s perfect for checking if momentum is built or fading. When used together, RSI and probability theory give you both direction and timing. One shows where the market is tilting. The other one will tell you when you’re coming back.

RSI vs. Probability – What’s the difference?

Both indicate whether the coin is “over-acquired” or “over-selled”, but they work differently.

Features rsi Probabilistic
The best It measures how strong the price movement has been these days. Check out big trends and breakouts Indicates whether the price is at the top or bottom of the range. Catch a short-term reversal
Reading range 0-100 0-100
Too expensive (too much) Over 70 Over 80
Too low (too sold) Less than 30 Less than 20
Reaction speed React more slowly due to the strength of the trend Short ERM timing makes it faster and better

Bonus Read: When adding RSI to a mix

Layered to double check stochastic signals RSI (14) On the same BTC/USD chart. Here’s what we saw:

  • Probabilistic It was over-buyed at 96+.
  • rsi I sit comfortably 56.98to the right of the neutral zone.

This difference is interesting. Probability theory says “peak momentum,” but suggests that RSI is there There is still room for moving higher Before the trend is gone.

That discrepancy can often be shown Short-term indecisiveness Or even Opportunity to continueespecially when the volume starts.

So what’s moving? If the RSI breaks past 60 or 70 at a price-holding company, you may see this rally pushed further. However, if the RSI stalls and collapses probabilistically, it could be your early warning light.

Pro-use methods like probability theory:

  • Checking is important: Don’t rely solely on probabilistic simultaneousness. Wait for the crossover and check the RSI or MACD.
  • Don’t panic at every signal: It’s too much bought and can continue to be bought in a fierce bull market.
  • Look for divergence: If the price is new and high but not probabilistic, momentum can fade and a reversal could come.
  • Multiple time frames: A 15-minute chart signal makes little sense if every day is still trending.

Try it with Bitfinex:

  1. Log in to Bitfinex
  2. Please select a chart
  3. Add a probabilistic oscillator
  4. Beware of extreme crossovers

Chart Decoder Series: MACD – Momentum Signals to Find Early Entry

Welcome to Chart decoder seriesA step-by-step guide to mastering technical indicators and chart patterns like a professional.

In my previous post, I covered two important tools for understanding trend direction: SMA and EMA. So let’s talk about momentum. Specifically, the method Spot momentum shifts before it appears in the price.

input: MACD (Version of Moving Average Convergence).

What is MACD?

MACD represents the divergence of moving average convergence. Simply put, MACD is a momentum indicator. It shows whether the market is steaming in direction or losing its strength. In other words, “Is the market trying to move?”

Moving averages help you to see where The market is moving forward, MACD tells you how strong the movement is. It is one of the fastest ways to find early signs of a trend shift before prices react completely.

It is made up of three parts.

1. MACD Line (Blue)

Think of this with you Momentum Tracker.

It responds when the direction of the market is beginning to change, indicating whether it is gaining energy or slowing down.

2. Signal line (orange)

This line closely follows the MACD line.

  • When the blue line crosses the orange line, it often means that the momentum is moving up (buy the signal)
  • A blue line crosses below may mean that momentum is falling apart (sales signal)

3. Histogram bar (red or green bar)

These bars show The distance between the blue and orange lines.

Here’s how to read these:

  • Growing bar = more momentum
  • Reduced = momentum slows
  • Green bar = bullish energy (buyer is active)
  • Red bar = Bear pressure (seller is active)

Why use MACD?

MACD is ideal for identifying potential entry points and exit points. That tells you:

  • When momentum is picked up
  • If the trend is reversed
  • When I sit tight and wait

Examples of behavior:

MACD indicator (lower panel)

  • MACD Line (Blue): 326
  • Signal line (orange): –279
  • MACD lines crossed above signal lines: bullish crossover
  • Histogram bar is green and growing: momentum is building
  • This crossover occurred under the zero line: early signs of trend reversal

Moving Average (Main Chart)

  • 20 Days EMA (Blue Line): ~84,067
  • 50 Days MA (green line): ~84,170
  • Current BTC price: 87,269. BTC price is On top of that Both averages, buyers are controlled and the trend is likely to continue.

Pro tips:
Combine MACD with EMA or SMA for strong confirmation
Use MACD crossover near major support/resistance for higher accuracy
Avoid relying solely on MACD in the landscape market – it can cause false signals

Try it now with Bitfinex:

  • Log in to Bitfinex
  • Select a trading pair (e.g. BTC/USD)
  • From the (Indicator) tab, add “Macd”

Please note:

Bulling signal: MACD line crossing On top of that Signal line
Bearish signal: MACD line crossing Below Signal line
Growth of histogram bars: Trends are gaining momentum
Reducing histogram bar: Trends are slowing down

This practice builds intuition over time, allowing you to act with confidence rather than confusion.

MACD is a favorite among traders for reasons. It provides early insight into changes in momentum before price actions become clear.

Chart Decoder Series: Bollinger Bands – How to Replace Volatility Like a Pro

Welcome to the Chart Decoder series. Here we analyze the technical charting tools provided by Bitfinex.

So far, we’ve explained:

Next, let’s dive in Bollinger Banda flexible tool that helps traders read volatility and find extreme prices.

What is a Bollinger Band?

The Bollinger Band consists of three lines.

  • Middle band: Simple moving average (SMA) for 20 periods
  • Upper band:SMA + 2 standard deviation
  • The lower band:SMA – 2 standard deviations

They grow and contract based on market volatility.

When the band is far away: high volatility
When they get tight: low volatility (and often there’s a big move)

How to use:

  • Prices exceed the upper band
This often indicates the terms of purchase. Short-term pullbacks or inversions may continue, but strong momentum can further drive profits.
  • Prices fall below the lower band
This could indicate a sold out condition. Bounce is possible, but it is best to check with additional indicators such as RSI and volume.
  • Prices move closely along the upper band
Known as “Walking the Band,” this usually reflects a strong trend. It can last, but traders need to closely monitor momentum.
  • The band is signed largely
The pressure suggests that the market is in a low volatility stage. These periods often precede sharp breakouts in either direction.
  • The band begins to expand
Indicates an increase in volatility. The market may be moving into a more active phase due to larger price fluctuations.

Examples of behavior:

Break down what appears on Bitfinex’s 1 hour BTC/USD chart and use Bollinger Bands (BB 20, 2) as the main indicator.

  • Current price: 105100
  • Middle Bollinger Band (20 SMA): 104978
  • Upper band: 105619
  • Lower Band: 104337

In this example, the BTC sits just above the middle band, showing tentative signs of strength. This is often a neutral to fierce zone, with prices deciding whether you want to move for a while or hang out sideways.

What’s interesting is that there was a Bollinger band. Wideerreflecting some sharp movements (clearly visible in recent dips and spikes). But now they are Start a contractsuggests that there may be a market in it Integration phase.

What could happen next?

  1. A bullish scenario:
When you see the BTC can hold on top of the central band and some powerful candles push high, Upper band (~105619) It’s highly likely. A clean break above can indicate an incoming breakout (look at the volume). If prices rise without strong participation, it could just be a fake.
  2. Bearish scenario:
If BTC slides back under the central band and picks up a red candle with volume, you can revisit Lower Band (~104337) immediately. This keeps BTC on a short-term downtrend channel.
  3. Lateral drift:
Most likely scenario for now: integration. A slight tightening of the band suggests a reduced volatility. This means that while the trader is waiting for a macro catalyst, BTC can only extend between the middle/lower bands.

Bollinger Bands work best when used Confirmation indicator. If you’re serious about taking a more confident catching breakouts and reversals, try combining this as follows:

  • rsi Check for excessive purchases/overselling
  • volume For verification of strength
  • Candlestick pattern Near the band of the entry signal

BTC/USD update with RSI + Bollinger Band

Current RSI (14): 51.47

This makes us right Neutral Zone Between overbuying (70) and overselling (30). There’s no clear momentum yet…

  • The RSI has been slowly climbing from its recent lows and has broken over 50.
  • This can be seen sometimes Short-term momentum shiftthe bear has lost control and the bull is intervening carefully.

Now, the chart says: From neutral to hope. The BTC has been raging from recent lows, and the RSI has been fine-tuned towards bullish territory. A game that is still waiting.

Pro tips:

  • use Bollinger Band with RSI or MACD Check the signal
  • Do not assume all touch=inversion in the band. Context is important
  • Bollinger Band’s “Squeeze” followed by a powerful movement
  • Please be careful Price – Band divergence. This is when prices start to rise again, but the band is not expanding. This means that the trend may be losing strength and a reversal or slowing may be approaching.

Try Bollinger Bands with Bitfinex:

  1. Log in to Bitfinex
  2. Open the trading pair chart
  3. Add a Bollinger Band from the indicator menu
  4. Look for a price that will break the band, a tight squeeze, or a strong trend “walking band”

Chart Decoder Series: RSI – Tools to View Markets

Hello, I’ll go back to the Chart Decode series, turn dry numbers into simple signals and help you act in the right place!

In the previous article, we discovered how MACD helped us chase momentum. Today, find the most popular tools for traders to complete their market trend skills. RSI – an essential companion in all transactions.

What is RSI?

RSI (Relative Strength Index) – also known as the market psychological guidelines – is a simple but extremely powerful tool. It helps you know that the market is too excited (too buy) or depressed (too sell).

Unlike metrics that run prices, RSI measures purchase/sell pressure based on recent changes. This is like having a radar that discovers crowd psychology before the market flips!

Decode RSI in the easiest way to decode:

●RSIs above 70 = Too many → The market may be trying to cool down

●Less than RSI = 30 = Too → The market may be about to wake up

● RSI between 40-60 = Cold Status → No Hot Signals!

A simple example:

RSI (purple color board): “Too many” warning

  • In the chart above, the RSI of the last 14 candles exceeded the threshold 70status signal Too classic.
  • This indicates that BTC’s recent price rise may have lost momentum or are preparing to enter the adjustment phase.

Traders are currently observing:

  • RSI decreases Less than 70 As the first sign of inversion.
  • If BTC is still in place, the RSI can remain above purchase. This is a common feature of a strong increase trend (but at higher risk for slow buyers).

The RSI becomes even stronger when combined with other indicators. Pair it with your MACD with your average dynamic line to see the signal better!

MACD: Increased dynamics remains intact

  • MACD Line (Green): 4,142
  • Signal Line (CAM): 3,536
  • histogram: Yang, but the bar is shrinking It may be that your motivation is slower.

The MACD is still active on the comfortable green roads of Orange Street, but be aware of the histogram. If the bar starts to narrow, it may be a sign that the increased motivation is weakening.

Dynamic road movement: Is BTC too expanded?

●50-day EMA (Golden Road): 92,570

●200-day SMA (Green Road): 91,673

BTC prices trade higher than both major moving average lines, confirming a strong trend of growth.

However, this also causes problems. Is the market tight?

If the price is far from these roads, one batch Healthy adjustments In the area 50 EMA It’s completely possible.

Final conclusion: Should I act or wait immediately?

  • Current trends: It has increased significantly, but can be expanded.
  • RSI: Be careful in areas overlooking.
  • MACD: Still positive, but it shows the first sign of slowing down.
  • strategy:
    • If you have profits, this is a great opportunity to consider either making a profit or tightening your stop loss.
    • If you are waiting for the opportunity to enter a command, wait for the batch 50 Adjustment to EMA To get input with better risk/profit ratios.

Pro Tips for Using RSI as a Master

RSI is very simple, but the key is how you use it. Here are some tips from professional traders:

Understand the market context

RSI excels in a market where prices range between support and resistance.

However, with strong trends (such as price increases), RSI can maintain an area that is oversized/cell or more for weeks. So don’t rush to sell just because RSI touches 70 – look at the larger image.

● In combination with other indicators

RSI works best when you have friends. Make with:

○Check whether MACD motivation is a consensus with RSI.

○ Dynamic averages (e.g. 50 EMA) checks whether prices are pulled too much from the main support level.

Observe divergence

○If the price is new, RSI? In other words Reduces divergence – Motivation may be weaker.

○If the price is new, RSI? In other words Increased divergence – Bound depends on your future existence.

○Breaks don’t always happen immediately, but this is a clue that traders don’t seriously ignore.

●RSI is an early indicator, not an action call. Just because RSI signals via purchase/sales doesn’t mean you need to act immediately. Think of panic as an early warning, not a reason to buy and sell.

●Play in time frame to fine-tune your strategy

The RSI indicator changes depending on the time frame you are viewing.

○ If RSIs are too much to buy but indicate that an hour of RSI is cooled, this often indicates that the market is falling into short-term adjustments within a significant increase in trends.

○ Smart Trader uses this to wait for short-term RSI to reset before diving into a larger trend.

Chart Decoder Series: RSI – The easiest way to find overbuying and overselling markets

Welcome to the Chart Decoder series. Here we categorize the world of technical analysis into tools that use it in practice.

Previous entries featured movement averages and MACD. This is great for identifying trends and momentum. Now, let’s take a look rsia tool that many traders use to measure trades with better confidence.

What is RSI?

RSI represents the relative strength index. It will help you see if the coin has been oversold recently and may be ready to turn it around.

It is plotted as a line moving between 0 and 100. Most traders use it in the 14th term setting. Depending on the time frame of the chart, this could mean 14 days, 14 hours, or 14 minutes.

Unlike indicators that run for price, RSI doesn’t just track where prices are. That’s what I say to you How extreme is the recent trading pressure?. This way you can see if the market is about to turn over before you actually do it.

How to read it:

  • Over 70 RSIs =Overbuy → Market may need to be corrected
  • RSIs under 30 = Too Sold → Market may be paid for bounce
  • RSI between 40 and 60 =Neutral → No strong signal

Examples of behavior:

RSI (purple panel): Acquired alerts

  • RSI sits on top 70Signaling Classic Conditions for purchasing too much.
  • This suggests that Bitcoin’s recent bullish run is possible Lose steam Or you’re approaching a natural correction.

What Traders Are Seeing:

  • RSI is back Less than 70 This could mean that the pullback has begun.
  • If BTC remains strong, RSI could continue to buy too much. This is a powerful uptrend and common behavior, and a risky zone for late buyers.

To improve accuracy, use RSI along with MACD, move the average and make more informed decisions.

Macd: I’m bullish, but will the momentum slow down?

  • MACD Line (Blue): 4,142
  • Signal line (orange): 3,536
  • histogram: Positive, but it’s starting to flatten and hints at it The momentum is slowing down.

The MACD remains bullish with blue lines comfortable and comfortable above the orange, but be aware of its histogram. If these bars begin to shrink, it is often the first clue that bullish momentum is declining.

Moving Average: Is BTC overexpanded?

  • 50 Day EMA (Yellow Line): 92,570
  • 200 Day SMA (Blue Line): 91,673

BTC is well above both of these important moving averages, confirming the current uptrend strength.

But this also raises the flag: Is the market growing too much?

If the price is too far from these averages, Healthy correction It often continues and reverts the price 50 EMAthe level that many traders consider dynamic support in bull markets.

Final takeout: Do you need to act now or wait?

  • Current trends: It is strong and bullish, but potentially overexpanded.
  • RSI: In the area acquired, beware.
  • MACD: It’s still bullish, but it shows early signs of slowing momentum.
  • strategy:
    • If you already have profits, this is the perfect time to consider Secure profit Or tighten the stop loss.
    • If you’re waiting to enter, look at a 50 Pullback towards EMA For stronger, lower risk entry points.

Pro Tips for Using RSI Like a Pro

RSI is simple, but using it well is really important. Here’s how experienced traders can make the most of their RSI:

  • Understand the market context

RSI works beautifully Horizontal or range marketprice bounces between support and resistance. However, with a strong trend (like Bull Run), RSIs may have been overbuying and selling for weeks. So don’t press that cell button just because RSI hits 70. First look at the larger image.
  • Combine it with other indicators

RSI works best when it’s part of a conversation. Try pairing:
    • Macd Check if Momentum agrees to what RSI is telling you.
    • Moving average (like 50 EMA) Check if prices are growing from the main support levels.
  • Be careful of divergence

If the price is New highbut isn’t RSI? It’s called The elimination of bearishnessthe momentum may be slipping.
If the price is New Lowbut isn’t RSI? that’s right A strong dispersalthe bounce may be round the corner.
Divergence doesn’t necessarily exist anytime soon, but that’s one of the clues that serious traders don’t ignore

  • Play in time frames to narrow down your strategy

Your RSI measurements will change based on the time frame you are looking at. in the case of Everyday RSI shows what you’ve bought, but 1 hour of RSI is cooledwhich means that the market is often in short-term pullbacks within a larger uptrend. Smart traders use this to their advantage and are waiting for short-term RSI to reset before they return to larger trends. This approach helps avoid chasing tops and provide a lower risky entry point. Always check multiple time frames before moving.

Chart Decoder Series: SMA vs EMA – Trend Trading Fundamentals

Welcome to the Chart Decoder Series: A dedicated series from Bitfinex designed to help you understand and apply the most important chart indicators like Pro.

Even if you’re just starting out with technical analysis, you’ll understand whether a veteran trader is refined about your advantage Moving Average It is a basic skill that allows you to level up your trading decisions.

Let’s start with the basics: SMA vs EMA.

What is a moving average?

Price charts can be messy and complicated. Every second, the price is ticked up and down, creating a whirlwind of data that can overwhelm even experienced traders.

Moving averages can help you retreat from the confusion and find real trends.

Smoothing price data over a specific period makes it easier to identify whether the market is up, down, or simply integrated.

In their core, the moving average is used to:

  • Identify the market direction
  • Highlight potential entry/exit zones
  • Check the signal from other indicators
  • Avoid emotional transactions based on short-term volatility

There are two main types of moving averages that appear on any trading platform. Simple Moving Average (SMA) and Exponential Moving Average (EMA).

Let’s break them down.

Simple Moving Average (SMA): A gentle, long-term lens

In Bitfinex, this looks like this: Moving Average (MA)

The SMA gets the closing price over a period of set number (10, 50, or 200), add them together, split it by that number. All prices weigh equal. SMA does not respond to all wiggles. Average direction over time.

example: The 50-day SMA totals the closing prices of the past 50 and divides them by 50.

Common Use Cases:

  • Swing Trader In many cases, we use 50 and 200 days of SMA to assess long-term momentum.
  • Trend Followers Pay attention to the price intersections above or below SMA to show the possibility of a reversal.

Strong Points:

  • Smooth and stable
  • Perfect for eliminating short-term noise
  • Strong long-term trend checks

Cons:

  • Responds slowly to sudden price changes
  • You may miss early signals in fast moving markets

Exponential Moving Average (EMA): Agile Trend Tracker

The exponential moving average also calculates the average price, More weights due to recent pricesbecoming more sensitive to current market movements.

example: The 20-day EMA still includes 20-day prices, but today’s data has more impact than the data from two weeks ago.

Emma is preferred by day traders and mesters who need to respond quickly to changes in momentum.

Common Use Cases:

  • Short term traders Rely on Emma for 9, 12 or 20 days to catch the trends of fast movements.
  • Emma is often used Crossover strategyA short-term EMA crossing the long-term EMA can indicate an entry or exit signal.

Strong Points:

  • Quickly respond to recent price actions
  • Helps you to detect trend reversals early
  • Recommended for fast-paced trading environments

Cons:

  • In a choppy market, you can generate more false signals
  • It may be too responsive in the lateral market

SMA vs EMA – which one should I use?

There is no answer for all sizes. The best choice depends on you Trading style, time horizon, goals.

Used by most experienced traders both. for example:

  • Check trends 200-day SMA
  • Input signal 20-day EMA

Try this: Apply to Bitfinex Chart

Do you want to do this now?

  1. Log in to Bitfinex
  2. Select a chart (e.g. BTC/USD)
  3. Add from the (Indicator) tab.
  1. See how they behave during trends and crossovers.

You start to notice the pattern:

  • 20 EMA <50 MA: Short-term price decline compared to long-term trends
  • Price <50 MA: The market is still below the average of long-term trends, proceed with caution
  • Prices are slightly <20 ema: We are trying to regain momentum, but not completely yet

This simple exercise will improve your chart reading skills more than any theory.

SMA and EMA are the foundations of countless trading strategies. Whether you use them as standalone trend filters or combine them with other tools like MACD or RSI, mastering these indicators will give you a clearer, more gentle way of trading.

It will appear next in the series to master the charts. How to use Macd Shift before the crowd to find momentum.
